Ozark has several character spin offs from the movie 'Winters Bone': Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery) and Merab (Dale Dickey); Rachel (Jordana Spiro) and April (Sheryl Lee); Cade (Trevor Long) and Teardrop (John Hawkes); Sheriff Nix (Robert Treveiler) and Sheriff Baskin (Garret Dillahunt); and one loose association spin off involving Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner) and Ree Dolly (Jennifer Lawrence).

I always thought Cade was overly self-righteous and super annoying with every one of his opinions on everything. I just started loving Jacob Snell this season. He's a man who knows how to get shit done, but the scene where he went hunting with Jonah humanized him so much in my opinion. He even stuffed the deer for Jonah. He was portrayed as a far more rational character than Darlene. He knew when he needed to perform, but he also knew when he needed to step down. Much respect to his character. I love how in his dying moments, he wasn't even mad at Darlene because he was going to try to kill her too. She was just one step ahead.

There are many things that I liked this season, like Marty's reaction to his first kill, or his relationship with Rachel, or finding out that Petty did get involve emotionally to Russ, or the inevitable comparison between Darlene and Wendy and how that might end for Marty looking at how it turned out for Jacob, and countless other moments. I think big things will be coming from Jonah. Very smart. Very quiet. A loner. The look on his face in the picture at the end of season 2 tells it all. An evil little smirk just like his mother’s. He understands the business as well as his dad, his mother has already employed his services to wire $1.8 million to a charity using an offshore account without Marty’s knowledge, when Darlene tries to scalp him he doesn’t seem shaken at all and tells his parents it was “just a message”, he knew exactly how to manipulate the system to set up all his own accounts, he spent a great deal of time with his best friend Buddy who no doubt taught him the ways of the unions and how the mob works, he knows all of Buddy’s old mob contacts by name and even has their info in a Roladex and just like Walter White, the moment he shaved his head......everything changed! Jonah is the new Heisenberg!

That's what the show wanted you to believe initially back in season 1 but in reality it was more curiosity than anything else, he was just studying vulture's behaviour and most importantly he didn't killed the animals but he understood more the value of life on season 2 after killing the deer and after Buddy's death so not a sociopath in my opinion, he also felt deeply disturbed for pulling the trigger on the Mexican guy. That doesn't mean he couldn't become a criminal in the future though.

People always say stuff like that when the show is good, but it's usually because of the limited number of episodes that the show actually can be as good as it is. Nevermind the budgetary reasons, but just purely on a storytelling level. If they tried to stretch the story out across more episodes, then it wouldn't be as tense and well-paced, and risks becoming boring and feeling stretched out. Conversely, if they tried to add more story points and events and whatnot, just for the sake of making more episodes, then it can easily start to become an unfocused mess, with filler episodes that feel unnecessary or the story would start to be convoluted. There's a delicate balance to be struck in storytelling, and especially with ongoing television series, there has to be a plan in just how much story you're going to squeeze out of a certain premise. IMO, a show like the Walking Dead has had WAY too many episodes and gone on for too long. I lost interest in it, and many people complain that it's gone off the deep end because it's been extended past the lifespan of its premise, and the story no longer makes sense because they're just making up shit as they go to fill in episodes. Compare that to Breaking Bad, which did 5 seasons with a relatively limited number of episodes, and then stopped when the story was over. Maybe the best written show ever. Because they had a plan, they constructed it to be as concise and on-point as possible with just enough room to breath and develop the characters and the world, without sacrificing the urgency and tension of properly pacing things over a set number of episodes. That's how you control the narrative and keep it to what it needs to be. Doing more just to do more is not good for art. Restriction is much better for art.

    • @damien1869

Any more than 10 would ruin the show and start making it dragged out/boring. Things would become tedious and redundant. @AWSVids 6 ปีที่แล้ว +49

Skylar was exactly what she needed to be. Just because people wanted her to be something other than she was doesn't mean she should have been. If Skylar-haters ever actually tried to watching that show with Skylar's perspective in mind, rather than only caring about their love for how badass Walt is and only viewing Skylar as an obstacle to that... they might realize how unfair their hatred of her is. I never understood the backlash against her and I still don't understand it. There's things to dislike about her, sure, but it doesn't make her a bad person, or a bad character. Wendy is obviously a different kind of character, and Skylar even tried to be that type of partner to Walt in season 3/4, but Walt was the one who had gotten too deep and ultimately screwed everything up. I bet you that Wendy will probably end up doing the same thing.

It feels like the showrunners are trying too hard to make her bad ass so they can say they have strong women on the show when she was always a bad ass and a competent character. It's dumb and will possibly ruin her character. It also could ruin the dynamic between her and Marty which is the main charcter relationship of the show.

Phenomenal analysis! I finished Season 2 about a week ago and while I enjoyed it, the finale left me feeling a bit empty since I was viewing the season as a lot of killing (mainly to those who were too stubborn to adapt to their current situation) and going behind each other's backs (as you explained in your video). However, the way you explained Wendy's motives and the parallels to the Byrd's marriage to the Snell's marriage, I get a better idea of what the show's writers were thinking when putting Season 2 together. This definitely sets things up beautifully for Season 3 and now I have to wait a full year for it! In the meantime, I will eagerly wait some of my other shows to start up again (can't wait for last season of House of Cards!)! Thank you again for a great video! You have a great knack for breaking down TV shows and movies!

Also, that’s a GREAT parallel you drew between the present-day Snells’ marital, umm, discord and the path Marty and Wendy are on. Makes Jacob’s bride-who-takes-your-breath-away line all the more chilling. Pour one out for Ozark’s loss of Peter Mullan. I’ll just have to hope for more Westworld flashbacks now...

Great recap/analysis! The lines from Helen about "Once you tell me. . . " was what clinched the mystery for me. Saying Wendy won't look at her own reflection the same, smell the same, react the same when her husband touches her. . . . it was all about the big reveal having to do with Marty, i.e., the escape.

Because this is a "Netflix" show, it won't get the acclaim it deserves. From screenplay to writing, to acting, to casting, to the music, to the cinematography... This season is up there with the "season 3 of the Soprano's" type of company. Beautiful work.
