In the months leading up to summer, an underwater sandbar slowly forms.
A small gap in the sandbar is created by the waves and gradually gets bigger. The tide then forms a pool, creating a trough.
Troughs can be very large and deep and no two are alike. They usually face south and are more marked in Landes than in the north coast of Gironde.
Along the sandy coast in the Aquitaine region, there’s one trough every 400 meters on average. That’s about 600 in all. The pools of water have hardly any waves. The natural pools look very enticing to swimmers. But those are the most dangerous areas.
