But it wasn't long before CGI caught up and live-action was too expensive to justify. Now we have CGI with voice-only actors. That works too, since CGI can create a wider range of "alien" forms while still having human-like voices.

My brother showed me this game, back when all I had was a 286 with a PC speaker and a floppy drive. My mind was blown even before the "intel inside" chime finished playing, prior to the game launching. And then seeing Mark Hamill, Tom Wilson, Malcolm McDowell - all huge stars - the was a dream come true. I wish I could convey the level of magic this game was. To have something like this was unbelievable. There were no games like it. I got so invested in Blair's story, after completing WC3, 4 and 5, I cried when his character died. It felt like losing a real friend I've known for years.

I beat this game in the barracks at Fort Hood on my 486DX4 100 I had just built. I mean, what else is a private in the Army going to spend their money on?!?!

I played on a WANG 386 but I built my own system. It had a 586 chip, accelerated & I could write DOS. It was a different life.

Flying the Excalibur in those last few missions were quite possibly my finest hour in a spaceship fighting game. Might say more about the controls of the other ships than the Excalibur, but still. :) it was a dream to fly. :)

Thx. The next version will have 30fps, because the source material has 15 and WC3 was originally shot on video at 30fps

I think the Mass Effect series has a lot to owe to this franchise, even with that series being more about boots on the ground combat, the kernel of the theme of humans having to fight in the galaxy and interacting with you crew mates so much more of a story rather than just a simple coin op game where the objective is to kill the player fast enough they have to spend a bunch of quarters to get through the game fighting. When the 3D0 home video game system was no long the hot tech and PlayStation 1 took over the market, I purchased a used 3D0 for that I only saw a little bit about but was heavily intrigued by. I found a few other gems for that system also but while buying a high tech computer was beyond my ability with no job, justifying the used system is something I never regretted, I still own it!

really like the movie this made into. I've played every wing commander except prophecy. really liked that they had some stars play major roles in 3 - 5.
