I Bought a Chinese HO Steam Locomotive - QJ 2-10-2 Unboxing

- After reading up on the history of RJ Corman, I've been interested in getting a Chinese QJ class 2-10-2 steam locomotive. The QJ was one of the last steam locomotives to be developed and production continued into the late 1980s.
In 2006 RJ Corman purchased QJ No. 7040 and had it rebuild before shipping it to the United States. The locomotive was remodelled to give it a more "American" look. This included removing the deflectors and adding red skirts along the boiler.
The HO scale model I ordered seems to ironically be made in Germany by a company called "K-First". There isn't anything online about it however the product seems to be of good quality.
Hello everyone, I am one of the founders of KFiRST and the designer of this QJ steam locomotive HO scale model.
Do you have plans to make LV-class locomotive, which was the prototipe for QJ?
I would like to see all metal G scale modern locomotives and rail cars . No plastic . Wouldn't that be cool
Does Kfirst have a website I would love to look at all the products you offer but I can’t seem to find a website
*Is this really steam locomotive, or battery operated ??* 🤔🙄🤨🤥
看到了你的TH-cam寫了sandtable覺得你應該是中國大陸人(台灣人把 layout翻譯成場景)。我只知道IOMON和百萬城的HO型QJ。可以問一下這台 是哪一個工廠生產的?
I am a member of Kentucky Steam and we now own RJ Corman 2008. It was donated to us along with the glass building.
Has the locomotive been moved yet and are there plans to run it again? I’m guessing the boiler certification has long expired?
@@SMTMainlineI’ve been told that there are plans to restore it and run it, but the engine has yet to leave its current location at the RJ Corman engine facility in Lexington, Kentucky.
@@SMTMainline Thank you for responding to my comment.
Wish Kentucky Steam would take over The Kentucky Railway Museum.
@@SMTMainline it is still sitting in RJ Corman’s yard in Lexington because we currently do not have enough space to store it. We are currently working on getting all three of our shop tracks open so we can store it.
Mr corman is an absolute legend here in central Kentucky
2008 was bought as a “collectors item” and was operated from 2008 - 2013 when Rick died hasnt run since and has been sitting at they’re Lexington Kentucky yard
It was donated to Kentucky steam heritage corp in 2020 and while it hasn’t moved yet a return to operation is possible depending on its condition
I was amazed by Rick Corman’s story, its a true American dream. I hope they succeed at getting No. 2008 operational. It looks rough at the moment and I suspect the boiler certification has expired.
@@SMTMainline if I remember right the engine ceased operation before it’s 1472 expired, but sitting for a decade might be a good idea to look it over
I saw a video about this man and his company.. He was one of the best! such a giving man, who definitely remembered where he came from . his workers loved him, and he did alot for preservation of rail history..God Bless!
There are some German companies constructing and engineering in Germany and then manufacturing in China, but the label is 99% fake. And also it is nonsense to claim that these type has ever been in service in Germany. The model itself seems to be rather good, especially the steam (Märklin, ESU, Roco and Piko offer models with that feature called dynamic steam for a few years). Sound and traction seem to be proper as well. Nice Video, greetings from Germany!
That label is probably just for marketing, as if they are trying to compete with the larger German companies like Märklin, Arnold, Trix, Fleischmann, and Piko.
@@BAKU2K2 Arnold offers only for scale N 160:0, so does Fleischmann after the takeover from Roco, they should be mentioned as the 3rd major H0 Brand. Trix belonges to Märklin (H0 AC, Z 220:1, 1 32:1), offers H0 DC and N.
@@frankboneberger I am well aware of that, my point was that the "Deutsche Qualität" seal is purely for marketing purposes.
These locomotives were never in service in Germany but one is on display at the Technik Museum Speyer. I'm more surprised that the instruction sheet also says there is a QJ in a museum in Japan as Japanese railroads other than the Shinkansen are all meter gauge.
@@danielstickney2400 Technikmuseum Speyer have also a Buran Shuttle from the Soviet Era . They are not only focused on German Technologies
Iowa Interstate also owns 2 QJs as well (they were acquired in 2006 and didn't change much aside from having US modifications like a bell and handrails; also Kentucky Steam now owns RJCC 2008
Kinda also symbolic of Iowa's past relationship with China.
As someone that has lived in this state for a long time, didn’t even realized we still owned one of these things
QJ 6988
Hello SMT, really love the video.
The brand Kfirst is a fairly new Chinese brand(I think) they are not owned by ChangMing, I really look forward to the conversion to RJ corman 2008 but I believe 2008 have a 6 axle tender and the model you got have the 4 axle tender(Kfirst also makes 6 tender axle version too).
Very nice looking locomotive! I always thought the black and red was a nice combo for the locomotive!
Then you'll love German steam locomotives for sure
Ya that’s why I’m such a fan of German locos
The 52's, L's of Russia, and QJ's all seem to share some design history, and ended up being the final notes in steam production and regular service. Does this make them what steam was finally perfected to?
I grew up in Iowa in the 80s, I remember when they got the steamer from China. I think we went to see it on a school field trip or it might have been with the scouts... I am sure it affected my love for trains but maybe not much since I mostly have diesels.
I like trains. I even made a video on my Chanel about train crossings and trains.. but I only made it in Indonesia.. I hope it can be useful too ❤❤
Chinese steam locomotives just look insanely good, especially with the styling.
They look really nice and industrial if they have less of the gaudy decoration.
Maybe due to the compact design adapting the axis-load limit and clearance limit, and the proportionally large firebox for better steam generation and being compatible with low quality coal.
I am from mainland China. In the 1990s, in front of my house, QJ-type steam locomotives passed by more than a dozen times every day. The appearance design of Chinese steam locomotives was inspired by the Soviet Union and Germany, predominantly black and red, with minimal decoration. However, there were many specially designated locomotives with unique markings.
Your channel is my favorite for model trains. I especially enjoy the repair videos. Kitty says we have a runner! Meow.
German high-end steam engines in H0 sometimes not only have pulsed steam but also steam out of the cylinders.
I have a couple of old Hornby locomotives dating from the early 1970s that have pulsed steam. The smoke generator incorporates is a little gear driven piston to crate the puff.
I’ve a couple of Marklin locos with pulsed steam
Very Nice locomotive SMT! I'm planning on getting a Bachmann China JS Class 2-8-2 steam locomotive to resemble the one on the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad in Boone, Iowa.
Hey! Was literally talking to my dad about the QJ Corman owned-he used to work on a QJ when he lived in Guangzhou, China. He was 16-17(?) at the time and I LOVE to talk to him about it.
What a connivence. What was his role working with the QJs. Driver, conductor, maintenance?
@@SMTMainlineHe said he was the boiler boy-made sure boiler pressure was at the right level. He also did clean up when they arrived at their final destination, but other than that, he worked with a couple other engineers to keep the engine afloat.
Wow. That’s where I’m from
i love how you know everthing but keep up the work and i feel left out because i dont have a ho train or any train
Everyone has to start somewhere. No one starts anything as an expert.
I'm glad you were able to find an HO scale QJ. Bachmann made them at one point, but never offered them in America like the SY 2-8-2.
I've seen some before. I heard the quality wasn't great.
That model is badass
Where did you find that Harrison?
This was a great video Harrison, maybe one day you should look at getting some Australian HO locos specifically from Queensland 🚞
I've begun to like American steam engines, or rather love them. In my collection of British steam engines and rolling stock, one American 0-6-0 tender engine is now resident on my new Snowball Steam Railway, and she has an Ore Car, caboose and a pair of Disneyland carriages. I've named the engine Frisky the Disneyland Engine. Frisky is more suited to the Snowball Steam Railway, because I've added my own version of Disney World Magic Kingdom to it. Who says we can't be kids?
RJ Corman actually either sold or donated their QJ locomotive to the Kentucky Steam Heritage foundation from what I heard. I understand that after they finish restoring C&O 2716 it will be restored sometime afterwards. They seem to be building up a line of steam engines to restore as I think they're supposed to work on a Nickle Plate Road steam engine as well as L&N 152, which is owned by the Kentucky Railroad Museum just like C&O 2716.
RJ Corman 2008 was donated to Kentucky Steam. 152 is being restored by next gen rail solutions, which is a company started by KSHC chief mechanical Officer, Jason.
2008 was donated 2716 is on a long term lease 152 will be sent back to krm after some work is done and 587 is just being stored for a private owner
I hope that’s successful. I believe it was donated in 2020 and there’s a video of it from the same year where it looks pretty rusty.
@@SMTMainline other engines have sat longer and still been fine, I’m not too worried
Very nice. Seen videos of Iowa Interstate's QJ working freight.
Boone & Scenic Valley in Iowa has a Chinese 282 JS class that they imported about the same time. New York Susquehanna & Western had also ordered a JS but either it and the ship it was on or just the locomotive is somewhere on the bottom of the Pacific.
Air horns were surprisingly common on steam locomotives towards the end of steam. Heard a story about one of the more famous railfan photographers as a young man had borrowed the family car and set off to the other side of the state to photograph the last of the NYC Niagra 484s. Sat trackside the better part of the day photographing nothing but diesels and with time to be home by his promised time running short he was starting to consider packing up and heading for home. As he was about to start packing up CTC lit the eastbound track up green so he figured to risk fatherly ire to wait for one more train. After a bit he hears an air horn blow for a couple of crossings up the line so at that point it's another diesel powered train as far as he knows and packs his gear and as he gets a couple blocks away looks in his rear view just in time to see the Niagara roll by.
I could see how it would be easy to mistake it. I've heard the GS4's horn before and even though its stock, it still doesn't match in my mind.
A strong influence of the Soviet railway industry is noticeable, especially in its wheels.
The 4-8-4 class P36, oh man, what a machine!
From what I understand, the United States was exporting ether 2-10-0s or 2-10-2s to the east until WW1. After then the Soviets made their own design based off the American models, later handing the designs over to China.
@@SMTMainline Chinese QJ very close to Soviet LV class

Interesting!
The R.J. Corman RR sometimes runs through my town every now and then and I love their red and white scheme
Mine too! I’m in North Carolina just outside of raleigh
Bro’s social credit is going up after this banger
Yeah I'm sure the CCP will love the bit where I talk about turning it into an American loco 😂
I’m Chinese, and my grandfather used to work on the railroad with these steam monsters. Really happy to see people abroad interested in these locos. Also a fun fact: the last steam locomotive in service in China retired early this year. It’s a JS 2-8-2 working in a mine in Xinjiang Province. So you can see that Chinese railway replaced steam locomotives quite fast and the high speed rail do has seriously high speed.
Was the last one part of the Sandaoling operation? I've seen videos of that place. It must have been something to work with these locomotives. Hopefully they bring RJ 2008 back to operation
@@SMTMainline Yes it is Sandaoling! So sad steam locos retired there. It is also hard to bring RJ2008 into service or operate a heritage railway because Sandaoling is like a deserted coal mine so not much people visit there. Most of the visitors are film crews or photographers. But as I know in Tieling, Liaoning Province a special train tour is held and pulled by their local steam locomotive (forgot what number it is). You know, special steam train tours.
The horn is literally a nyc subway horn sound
Very very nice! I had the Bachmann version of a QJ but they are very notorious for having zinc impurities causing the frames to rot. But now that this company makes this one you shared, I might take an interest in finding one!
If you want the QJ model of KFiRST, you can contact me.
The B&SVRR here in Boone, Iowa, brought over a Chinese steam locomotive in the late 1980s. It's still running, it just completed its 1472 day inspection late summer last year. I got to see it run several times last year.
I read that was a replacement for one that was spilled in to the ocean, but someone else had already imported it and it was available.
Edit: I built the drag strip lol
Great looking locos love them!
Great looking and sounding locomotive. What brand of decoder does it use? Or is it a Chinese brand we don’t see here?
I believe it uses a Chinese decoder. I can’t remember what kind
This is a beautiful engine, i definitely need to find an ho scale foreign locomotive at some point after i finish building my canadian steam fleet lol.
I love your videos, keep it up
I can watch and listen to your new steamer "work" your layout all night!!!!!!!!!!
Hey, I was just looking at these on ebay... Great minds think alike.
I searched on ebay for one of these... yikes... 830 dollars (USD) for the dcc and sound varient... gorgeous model regardless.
They certainly aren't giving them away. With die-cast construction, sound and smoke it's not too surprising however the Bachmann ones weren't much cheaper and from what I've heard are junk.
I see, this is a premium museum quality model. Im sure this engine is your prized gem! Mine is a BLI NYC Niagara.
You know it’s a good day when smt uploads
I’m the first comment on this comment
No your not who cares...
I saw a number of QJs running over Jinpeng pass and other places in December 2000. the ones I saw didn't have enclosed cabs with doors even though the temperature was minus 24 degrees celsius. The only one I travelled on certainly didn't have a glazed roof, and I don't recall seeing them on the rare occasions I was looking down on them. They were very powerful and sure footed I never saw one slip even with a 7,000 ton coal train. Very often they ran double headed. The 2-8-2s were still made to order in October 2000, but by then they had stopped mass producing them on a continuous production line.
I feel sorry for the crew having to drive one of those when it was -24c. Hopefully being near the boiler helped. It must have been something to see these things live in person.
The tractive effort of QJ is worth like 320 kN. Many main lines in China can regularly have up to 20‰ slopes, and sometimes up to 25‰, while the axis-load limit is usally 20 ton or 25 ton. So locomotives are to designed with maximised tractive efforts using a limited axis-weight.
These seem very nice. I have heard mixed feelings about the Bachmann version of these engines. They are a nightmare to take apart if you need to. They poor pulling engines. And If something breaks good luck on parts, they seem non-existent. Hopefully this is better then Bachmann's trash
I’ve heard those rumours as well. This strikes me as a high quality model but as I mentioned it’s difficult to find anything about the manufacturer.
I've had four from bachmann, unfortunately they were all from the first batch where the loco chassis all suffered from bad metal fatigue. Unfortunately I lost some serious money and bachmann said as I wasn't the original owner of them, they couldn't do anything.
Detail is good, but majority of the loco and tender is plastic so really rather light weight. Am absolute nightmare to take apart but not as bad as the js and sy.
Mr smt I love Chinese steam 🇨🇳
Oddly enough im eat Chinese food while watching😅🍜🚂🇨🇦👍cool piece Harrison. Little jelly😋
That is a beautiful steam locomotive, I've got to get one one of those!

Smoke rings. That was cool.😁❤️🇺🇸
Can’t wait to see the modifications to this, really nice locomotive
I remember back in 2005 I was granted permission to come to RJ Corman's Rupp Yard in Lexington, KY because a family friend knew an engineer who worked for Corman at the time & I got to ride in the cab of GP38-2 #3801 & drive it across the yard after we filled out paperwork to come onto the property. I was only about 5-6 years old at the time, it was such a fun time. About a year later, I saw a NS & Conrail diesel pulling a steam locomotive across the local crossing of our hometown & I yelled for my parents to come look. Sure enough, it had the Corman banner on the side of it & we knew it had to be Old Smokey on it's way to Rupp Yard. It was the only time I have ever gotten to see Old Smokey in reality, & I am so glad it's slowly getting the recognition the locomotive desperately deserves. I look forward to seeing what comes from this project!
Thanks for sharing this story. I really hope the locomotive can be brought back to working order
Really nice model, and surprisingly has decent sound. So many trains toys/models out of China have the same repeating generic sound that gets really annoying that I half suspected that this loco would have that too.
Do you have a link to where you bought the locomotive?
Same thoughts here
I found it on eBay
Could you show us how all your engines work pls it would be cool
I will eventually :)
R. J. Corman RR is in the next city from me. They several locos on display including some F3s.
Have you ever replaced any of the lights on your MRC 9500? I have 2 of them, but only 1 of the meter lights work, just bought the second one.. $50.00. thank you.
My controller never had working tack lights. I'm not sure if they quit adding them at some point or if mine were both defective from the factory. I have an older model and both ironically work on that one. I suspect it wouldn't be too tricky to replace them.
Wow there is one locomotive I've been wanting to get similar to this but different. Then I want to modify it to look like a loco in CT . When you mentioned about these locos There is also 2 mikados in the US that are from China steam loco works . One is in Essex CT numbered 3025 and the other is in ny at a scenic railroad. There was a 3rd that was lost in the ocean on the way here.
There are actually 3 Chinese Mikes in the U. S. The two SYs, one owned by the Valley Railroad in CT, styled to look like a New Haven engine, and the New York, Susquehanna and Western one, #142. The third Mike is the last JS Mike built by Datong in 1988, #8419, at the Boone and Scenic in Boone, IA.
Engine sounds good from here not bad
Where did you purchase this model? I’d be interested in checking it out
I found it on eBay.
One of my buddies bought a Bachmann QJ which he was going to turn into Iowa Interstate for me, but it disintegrated on him because the thing was dry rotted. Is the K-1st version available or is it a discontinued item?
That's a shame. This one is a new release so its available.
Bachmann makes Chinese locomotives, and I wish they sold them at regular retail instead of needing very expensive hoops
I heard they aren’t well made ether.
Question: How are you going do without Canadian national 6060? (aka nose bullet)
I still have mine. The one shown in the giveaway promotion was purchased for specific for it.

@@DaylightMainline4449 I’ve started fixing it up. It doesn’t run perfect but I’ve improved it.
@@SMTMainline alright then Update I have own Kato n scale DCC sound Big boy 4014 also with Kato Auxiliary Union Pacific water tender on my n scale layout
A massive amount of us can agree that this is a very beautiful steam locomotive
My question is how much you paid for the loco. Serenity, we have a runner! Cheers from eastern TN
He said $800
Yep. They certainly aren't giving them away with die-cast, sound, lights and smoke.
That is a really cool locomotive, would it be too taboo to use one on my layout project lol
Interesting, I might be interested in getting one of those. I visited China in 1987 to photograph steam. Our tour saw and or photographed somewhere around 600 steam locomotives in three weeks. At that point there were numerous standard and narrow gauge examples still operating in the country, and Datong and Tang Shen were still building steam. However, by then Datong was only building JS Class Mikados, QJ production having ended in 1986, and all steam production ended in 1988. Operationally, the crews were as likely to use the air horn (yes they did sound like the one you have) as the whistle (which were air-actuated, so no twilling), and the Chinese do not use bells. The top headlights were Mercury Vapor, like street lights, and headlights were pretty much only used after dark.
What I would really like to find a model of, and I don't think anyone makes a model of one, is a Polish OL49 Class 2-6-2, which is what I ran on the Wolsztyn Experience 15 years ago. If anyone knows of such a model please reply to this comment.
Thanks for sharing your experience from when they still used these. I found this one on eBay. Apparently K-First is a new manufacturer.
@@SMTMainlinewould you have a link please? I can't seem to find one with that short 8 wheel tender in DC / DCC only AC 3 rail sadly.
What's your plan with the tender by the way? (The R.J.C. has the larger 12 wheel)
China was producing steam engines all the way in to the 21st century, the newest known Chinese steam locomotive is a C2 class narrow gauge built in 2015, crazy to think there are steam locomotives in regular service that are less than 10 years old. There's been an attempt to get a C2 class built in 1988 working on the Ffestiniog railway in Britain as well.
Ffestiniog are still making steam locomotives...
@@RacingAnt And others in the UK like the A1 trust.
i just watched something about iowa interstate with their Qj
That model would be based on a pre 1980 built QJ because after 1980 all newly built QJs were equipped with six axle tenders.
This specific one was made in 1972. I wish I could have found a 1980 or later however this was the closest one I could find to No. 7040.
@@SMTMainline Nice man! Also here is my video of the 2001 Canadian Pacific Holiday Train with 2 AC4400s in Toronto at night.
Don't let the German flag confuse you. This model is guaranteed not to have been produced in Germany. This is most likely the same manufacturer from Hong Kong that produces for the American market under the name "Bachman". This model was probably only produced for the Chinese domestic market. But as long as the price and quality are okay, there's nothing wrong with it.
The manufacturer reached out to me. I they confirmed the model was made in China but I don't believe it has anything to do with Bachmann. The mechanics were specially designed to hide the worm gear hence the weird gearing on the bottom.
@@SMTMainline That's just a suspicion. Almost 25 years ago you could also buy a QJ from Liliput (Bachmann) in Germany. It is possible that the old locomotive with the old gearbox was produced again for the Chinese market. That would also explain why a German flag was printed on the packaging to deceive Chinese buyers.
How much for the layout controllers and trains 😂
I have no clue
i live 2 and half hours from where they started RJ Corman and i have seen the QJ sitting at RJ Cormans yard in Lexington Kentucky.
Hopefully they move it soon. I saw a video of it from 2020 and it didn’t look great.
Yeah. But the Kentucky steam heritage own it now and have plans at some point to move and get it back running
I've actually gotten to ride on a the Iowa Interstate locomotive, pretty fun experience honestly!
I’d love to see it in person one day. I heard they plan to rebuild it.
I have seen the synchronized smoke before. MTH HO locomotives use it. I have their Union Pacific 4-12-2, and it has that on it. A model I can recommend.
Makes sense that MTH would do it. Synchronized smoke like that is fairly common in O scale which is MTH's bread and butter.
So has Broadway Limited since their Paragon 2 days.
@@OriginalBongoliath I can't speak for Paragon 4 units, but the smoke units in the Paragon 3 engines aren't great
That model is in such nice condition that I would just keep that one as is and try to find a model of RJ Corman 2008.
Very nice locomotive Harrison! The pulsing smoke feature has been on BLI and MTH steamers for awhile. It's pretty much a given that Scaletrains will carry on that feature after purchasing the tooling from MTH back in 2021. Fyi: Scaletrains has announced the first of those locomotives to be released will be N&W 611 as well as the matching passenger cars, with the official unveiling sometime during the first part of this year.
The motor module integrates the motor leads and two Hall elements for detecting the motor speed. The two Hall elements are arranged on the base board at a 45° angle. On the flywheel of the motor there are two symmetrically arranged magnets, which scan through the Hall elements, and the Hall elements send off a signal to the main board, at an interval of 0.25 turns between two signals. Since the transmission ratio of the locomotive model is 1/25, when the motor rotates 25 turns, the driving wheel rotates 1 turn. To make the sound effects four times at one turn of the driving wheel, it needs to detect the motor running by 6.25 turns. There is a counter on the main board that records the signals from the Hall elements; each signal is 0.25 turns, and when 25 signals are counted, the counter sends off a signal to the decoder. In this way, precise synchronization between the driving wheel and the sound effects is thus achieved. The sound and smoke synchronization technology is unique from KFiRST.
For something that’s not Broadway Limited, that’s impressive.
what a beauty, amazing addition to the collection SMT!
Iais 6988 is literally one of my personal favorite steam locomotives as I have seen it myself. And my youtube profile picture is of iais 6988 on the oxford, Iowa to Iowa City, Iowa Excursions. Sadly IAIS 6988 is now down for her 1472, so she won't be running for awhile

The name KFiRST originates from a legendary steam locomotive - KF1, which was China’s only main line steam locomotive with axle arrangement 2-4-2 back then. The KF1 steam locomotive was designed in China and built in Britain.
KFiRST is committed to developing Chinese train models conforming to NEM standards, to the promotion and popularization of DCC technologies.
The N-scale Shaoshan 7C electric locomotive model is now on the market, which is the first N-scale Chinese locomotive model, with a digital sound version simultaneously on sale.
We have put another HO-scale Qianjin (QJ) steam locomotive model on the market, which is the first steam locomotive model equipped with synchronous sound and smoke effects in China. What is worth noting is that this product, by accurately detecting the motor speed, truly simulates the smoke and steam in four puffs at one cycle of the driving wheel.
The main components of the locomotive, such as boiler, chassis, tender body and so on, are made through zinc alloy die casting process. Pipelines and most of the details are made from separate moulds, and so the model is full of rich details.
The unique design of the transmission mechanism makes it possible to get rid of the gearbox between the boiler and the chassis.
This model boasts rich lighting and sound effects, and delivers excellent running performance so that it can easily travel through complex tracks and points.
KFiRST will focus on the development of more high-quality Chinese train models in the future.
