    Ha yes building big, recently got back to working on ships after 2-3 years of not playing the game much and playing almost exclusively AOTE and it is a royal pain, especially since I have not build a ship in so long, but what I found recently is that building the ship front to back really helps, starting off by putting a turret and then adjusting from there, and then starting work to the back building the stern and bow last, getting dead set on measures before even starting can cause a lot of problems, in my last ship had to raise the area for the turrets by 1 because it was a block short, which meant raising the deck and everything above it 1 block, the space I ended having to make a bridge and so on was also less than desirable, so test fit at least the main guns before going ham on building the hull.
    Also helps doing the same height wise, so starting on the top and finishing on the bottom in case if you build like me and do "layered" ships.
    Edit: The biggest tip I would give now a days is the advantage of building big is also that you can have so many different weapons systems, so actually make use of them, don't just slap 1 AI down and call it a day, make sure your different weapons are prioritizing the vehicles they are meant to hit, the prioritization card is not great but it can still offer some more effectiveness, and if you have a bunch of high powered weapons, then organize them into groups the same way, it's hard to justify shooting 20 railgun APHE shells into the same spot in any vehicle, it will also make them more effective against multiple vehicles.

    I remember making a "cruiser" size ship and out of lazyness I just added two LAMS rather then a large massive one piped all over and it was SO MUCH BETTER.. like.. I just do that going forward. Ship getting really big? Welp, time for quad LAMS.

    Good advice! But I wouldn't be me if I didn't add something more so around 11:00 you start putting spaced lines of propellers. You could make much better use of the empty space if you placed back to back strips of propellers with reversed ones because that way you're essentially getting twice the propellers for the same amount of dead space. Also, you need to make a video about being able to keep doing this for several years :P
    EDIT: by "this" I meant playing FtD and making videos for it

  • @GodofWeird
    @GodofWeird 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I got my friend into FtD a few months ago, I told him to start small and stuff.
    Two ships down the line and he already got past 200 meters length. Unfortunately he plays on a potato so he can’t really play.
    I don’t follow any of these rules but currently I just know what works and doesn’t work so usually the things I build are quite successful though recently I don’t find the need to build big, just build for long range.

    Great, informative vid again Mr. BorderWise. Quick question for anyone reading, how do I help a ship manuever better? This moreso concerns AI than big ships, but it's a problem I have more consistently with bigger boats. I keep getting the "AI cannot manuever properly" alert and my ship really struggles to hone in on a point. It often turning past it, recharting, and turning past it again. When i use the AI manuever view, i can see that when the ship gets close to a point, let's say within ~400m, and the ship is already mostly pointed towards the goal, for some reason the AI sets another point like 50m to the right/left and tries to turn into the point, causing it to overshoot/undershoot.

    I use prefabs to a moderate degree, but am a huge fan of sub objects and the flood function on large builds. Also the test often bit got a chuckle from me, I can’t count how many times I’ve thrown a half-built battleship in to battle to see what happens! Also, I at least like to have at least the main armament designed and at least partly tested before building a ship. My gunboats are always build around the main turrets to ensure they fit nicely.

  • @J7Handle
    @J7Handle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I don’t plan ahead at all. Instead, I build my main weapons systems first, maybe secondaries too, then build hull and armor around those as necessary. Also, to save time, I prefab chunks of the hull to repeat along the length of the ship.

    How did it take me this long to realize how similar my builds are to your canoes? Allow me to go over my process.
    I start my builds by designing the armour layout. I build a full "slice" using 4m beams. A buncha layers of metal and alloy and an open square in the middle to put... schtuff. This is the first prefab.
    Second step, make a wedge that fits onto the slice. This will be the bow and stern.
    Third, design gun turrets or other weaponry to fit inside the inner measurements of the slice.
    Fourth, Put a number of slices together and put the turrets inside. Also add engines (usually pre-prefabbed) and ammo/AI compartments
    Fifth, once you are pleased with the length of the citadel, add a wedge to the front and back
    Sixth, add propulsion.
    The great thing about this modular approach is that it's flexible. A one-turret monitor can be extended into a multi-turret battleship. A turret can be ripped out to mount a vertical launch missile battery. This creates an entire series of vehicles, which I name after the serial number of the original slice.

    Loved the video @Borderwise! Sorry if I haven't been around for a while man! I was just looking at the Yamato, Littorio and the Planned but Cancelled Montana-class Battleships and I just got an Idea. Now, Call me an Absolute Mad Hatter, but what if there was a Design for a Class of American Battleships that were armed with....
    • 4 Triple Turrets with 18"/45 or 50 Caliber Guns (A, B, X, Y Configuration)
    • 4 Triple Turrets with the 8"/55 Caliber guns normally used on Heavy Cruisers
    • 8 Twin 5"/54 Caliber Guns (1 Forward, 1 Aft, 2 Port and 2 Starboard; Like the twin 5"/38's on the Baltimore-class Heavy and Cleveland-class Light Cruisers)
    • 64 40 millimeter Anti-Aircraft guns (10 Quad and 12 Twin Mounts)
    • 32-48 20 millimeter Anti-Aircraft guns (All in Single Mounts)
    This design was Inspired mostly by the Design of the Italian Littorio-class Battleships and the Main Battery of the Japanese Yamato-class Battleships and the Secondary Battery of the Planned but Cancelled American Montana-class Battleships. The Littorio's had 15 inch Guns for their Main Battery with the normal 8"/55's on their Heavy Cruisers as the Secondary Battery while the Yamato's had 18.1 inch Guns and the Montana's were supposed to have the 5"/54's as their Secondary Battery. The Barrel Lengths of each gun are as Follows..
    • 18 inches × 45 Calibers = 810 inches ÷ 39 Inches (1 Meter) = 20.769 meters
    or 18 inches × 50 Calibers = 900 inches ÷ 39 Inches = 23.076 Meters
    • 8 × 55 = 440 ÷ 39 = 11.282 Meters
    • 5 × 54 = 270 ÷ 39 = 6.923 Meters
    • 20 mm ÷ 25.4 mm = 0.787401574 inches × 70 Caliber = 55.11811024 inches ÷ 39 Inches = 1.413284878 Meters
    • 40 mm ÷ 25.4 mm = 1.57480315 inches × 60 Caliber = 94.48818898 inches ÷ 39 Inches = 2.422774076 Meters
    Just as a side note, 25.4 millimeters is 1 inch *Even*. So for the 20's and 40's I had to get the amount of Inches in order to determine the Barrel Length.
    For Camouflage, I was thinking about using Standard Measure 32/D Which is actually a Destroyer Pattern (/D) in Standard Measure 32's Colors and actually was painted on the Larger Warships that were operating close to the Japanese Home Islands near the end of the Pacific War. I'll try to get the RGB Values of the Colors as the Ones I do have are for Measures 11, 12, 12 (Modified), 16, 21 and 22 as well as the Carrier Deck Colors.

    While this video is good, I'm surprised that you haven't thrown in the main advantage of building big, redundancy.
    If you make something over 400k materials, unless you are burning mats armor spamming, you should be able to make 2 of any key systems, that basic redundancy means you should be able to keep fighting until 40-60% usually.
    Above a million, you can have 3 instances of most stuff and keep fighting to sometimes 30% health.
    It's also the main way for broadsiders ships to handle high pen frontsiders, when you get penetrated, it can go straight through without taking you down when you keep your systems redundant.
    The larger a system is, the less overhead space/materials-wise redundancy has.
    the best part is that your armor is less wasted too, if the enemy has to penetrate it many times to disable any specific system instead of partially reducing output.

      Ejectors don't work on belt-feeders, but yes. That combined with safety fuses makes APS much less volatile.

    What's the reason for using metal poles for armour? I'm a bit out of loop on FTD recently

    • @BorderWise12
      @BorderWise12  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a way of reducing kinetic damage and chemical AP shells at the same time. Poles are like slopes and wedges in that they take reduced damage from kinetics at the right angle, but poles have an even and reliable 360 degrees of reduced KD, as opposed to the greater reduction of slopes/wedges that can only occur from the front.
      Poles also function as improvised airgaps for dealing with HEAT and HESH, although there is apparently a chance that HEAT charges can still pass through them.
      Hope that clears things up!

    ~15000 blocks at ~1mio. materials with ~700 firepower are quite medium for me.
    There are many beautiful ships with stunning decorations on the workshops designed after real warships with terrible firepower/material values (like 2000-3000) put on rather ineffective weapon systems with no active defence. Like ships with a single "realistic" 76mm guns that can barely penetrate a meter of alloy block. For my play style it's a pity to take down such ships with a 300k material corvette of mine
