    Be sure to inoculate logs soon after they are felled; if you cannot inoculate immediately, try to store them off of the ground and inoculate within no more than a month for best results. Thank you for the detailed explanation of silvopasture. I heard you and your father discuss on an early episode of the PIMPCast, but the visual is worth 1,000 words!

    Another characteristic to choose in selecting trees to keep is the tree trunk root flare. This is the base of the tree where it flares out at ground level. Every tree base should be pyramid shaped, like a traffic cone. This is the area of the tree where the roots start to radiate away from the tree to establish a strong root base. The tree William referenced at the 15:00+/- mark is an excellent example of a proper root flare. These trees are healthier and longer lived. You can notice this in trees that grow in a natural area that hasn't been disturbed by man. Most all trees planted by man, look like power/telephone poles or fence posts. Look at any area that's been "landscaped" and you will see this. This is one reason there are so many unhealthy, short-lived trees in today's society. Howard Garrett (the dirt doctor) in the Dallas area has many references regarding the root flares of trees.

      @@ThePermacultureConsultantI agree, they looked like sapsucker holes, if all in a straight horizontal line. They make holes to trap insects in and come back later to eat and also drink sap. Not necessarily a sign of a tree disease. As a birder I advocate for keeping habitat for as many birds as you can. If you have a dead standing tree or two you can leave it for the woodpeckers owls bats and squirrels etc. I like your thinking though with forest health and thanks for the video. Its fun to manage a forest and sounds like you are thinking about a lot of variables. I hope the project goes well!

    I think in Maine they have an upper and lower size limit on lobster so the big ones are thrown back as well as the little ones. They also mark a notch in the tail of females with eggs and throw those back. If they are caught again without eggs they know by the notch that they are able to produce eggs and throw those back also. Seems like a good idea.

    • @YoooItsRex
      @YoooItsRex 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Jack Spirko said he didn’t notice a very significant improvement with the use of biochar. According to him, you’d be better off mulching and improving the soil life, with maybe the addition of SOME biochar, instead of a BUNCH of biochar. If your soil is already great, do the biochar, but personally I would get a massive pile of woodchips off to the side and use it for mulch when needed.

    • @ThePermacultureConsultant
      @ThePermacultureConsultant  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The power lines are up to the power company. They get an allotted space on either side of the line to keep clear. The fence is a case by case basis. In my case, I would like to be able to use the west side of the property to expand to the back half, in the future. I guess that's a long way to say, "It depends." 😂

  • @peterellis4262
    @peterellis4262 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I am pretty sure you are doing the space calculation incorrectly. It's not the circumference in inches turned to feet as the radius around the tree. That gives the full diameter of the circle around the tree. Half of that is your radius to measure out from the tree to produce the clearing needed.

    • @ThePermacultureConsultant
      @ThePermacultureConsultant  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think that calculation would open up enough canopy to allow grass to grow. I'll have to double check. If I'm wrong, I'll be sure to let everyone know. Thank you!

      Grassfed beef, or any ruminant, are part of the carbon cycle and build the soil ecosystem. Dr Allen Williams has measured their emissions and they are lower as well. Adaptive grazing in a silvopasture setting is regenerative, ie beyond sustainable, it self regenerates abundance with positive cascading effects.
      Unfortunately big ag has captured academia on these topics, but I do think that is starting to turn around because soil life is the new frontier.
      Cheers and blessings!

      Perhaps, one day you will discover that ruminants managed in a properly GRAZED, 100% GRASS-FED way that mimics the way herds were moved by the predators (lions, wolves, ...) will capture more carbon, water, other nutrients, and regenerate soil. See Allen Williams, Gabe Brown, Ray Archuleta, Richard Perkins, Steve Kenyon (see the graph he shows in his videos of when farms were no longer profitable and BIG AG grew its profits off the backs of farmers), Greg Judy, Joel Salatin, Jim Gerrish, Understanding Ag, Allen Savory, Will Harris (see 100,000 Beating Hearts- a potion of it is a cartoon how fertilizers were sold to farmers in 1940's).
