Set in the 31st century no less. Even if you try and bring cold hard logic into the equation you're left with a scenario where you're assuming the effects of 21st century medicine on parasitic worms from the 31st century who may or may not be extra terrestrial.
Lol Dr. Mike going to Spanish when the worm says "Yo".... rather than clocking that it's more like "Yo, its me, your boy worm guy, making special sauce special"
Even if it was in Spanish, you would actually say "Yo" in that scenario and not "mi". Yes, the direct translation of "yo" is "I", but Spanish grammar works differently. But we're here because he's a doctor, not a linguist.
I got roundworm once! I was in Cambodia with the Peace Corps and the medical officer caught it during my exit physical (via a stool sample). She gave me one big pill and told me to see my PCP when I got home. The PCP was so fascinated when I told him why I was there, I felt like I was the most interesting patient he'd seen all day lol (I was totally fine, so I suspect I hadn't had the worm for very long).
This worm episode is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen on television. I believe it won an Emmy. I cry every single time I see it. And I'm grossed out by the eggs and worms LOL.
"What about the worms in the other parts of his body?" Listen, this is going yo be one hell of a bowel movement. We'll be lucky if he keeps his skeleton."
One of my jokes from this episode. Behind: Professor: be very quiet, we’re in the ear. Amy (whispering): Okay Professor Professor: WHAT? Fry (to Leela): What about what? And when their in the circulatory system and pass some cholesterol and Zoidberg spreads a bit on some bread saying it spreads like good cholesterol but tastes like bad cholesterol
The "pipe though the body" actually happened in real life. Two guys on a motorcycle were trying to avoid an accident only to get impaled by a pipe that was hanging out of the back of a truck. The doctors were shocked that they were still alive and fully conscious. With some careful surgery, they made a full recovery.
It just seems to be a symbiotic relationship. They're just really good tenants, and they see the advantage in improving his health as it would lead to benefits to themselves. Smarter Fry would likely live longer and healthier. The king was oddly ominous at the end though, making it seem like maybe the end-game is less pleasant somehow.
One of my more horrifying childhood memories is that period when I looked in the toilet and noticed I had tiny white worms and never told anybody about it. I remember it was a thing for a while and I guess they went away on their own because when I remembered in my late teens they weren't there anymore. But yeah, I was more fascinated than concerned by it.
One of Futurama's finest. They actually do use a de-wormer in the sequel episode to this that came out last year! One guess what de-wormer it was that made a funny punchline
The moral of this episode: If you're lonely, unloved and incapable of doing the things you want to do, never change, because in order to change you'll have to encounter phenomena existing outside of your own body and mind, and therefore you'll feel you yourself haven't "earned" the better things and relationships that become available to you, and they'll feel hollow. Things get weird sometimes when TV shows always have to reestablish their status quo by the end of the episode, but this one is spectacular.
In the immortal words of Sheldon Cooper, "Whenever you use a hand dryer in a public restroom Just remember “It'd be more hygienic to let disease ridden gibbons sneeze your hands dry”"
The worms to me definitely appear to mostly just be your garden-variety earthworms. They have clitellum and segments. They would be Annelids (segmented worms) which is a separate Phylum from round worms (Nematodes) or flat worms (platyhelminthes). I am sure they just made them look like that because it’s easily recognizable, but I love that of all the parasitic worms, they ended up picking one of the few non-parasitic species.
It's sci fi, these parasitic worms could be working in some symbiotic or mutualistic fashion, though there's an episode in the recent season from last summer that also featured parasitic worms, possibly of a similar variety, but they're doing the reverse of what they did to Fry. Episode is even called Parasites Regained
“Watching Dr. Mike react to ‘Futurama’ medical scenes is like having a backstage pass to the ER. His knowledge and humor make learning about medicine entertaining!❤
There was an incident a few years back where a kid was shot in the face. The bullet was still lodged in his head for hours afterward. The police arrested him and questioned him (there were two other dead people in the house and yet somehow, this one dude survived).... anyway, the police questioned him for hours and the kid was very disoriented and confused and answered the same question wrong three times and then didn't remember being asked the question. Finally, the cop got fed up and called somebody in to look at this kid and when they had discovered he'd been shot - rushed him to the ER. He did survive but was handicapped afterwards and did eventually pass away from complications from being shot in the head.
Crazy to see this reaction video! Just learned about RFK Jr's brain worm last night and it made me think of this Futurama episode. One of the best episodes of the series by far too!
12:18 it could be that of a symbiotic relationship between him and the worms, he gives them nutrients and they’ll just remake them to their original desgin
Tapeworms have the protective mechanism from the GI system. Some treatments disrupt their protection against the GI system where the host metabolizes them.
Doctor Mike: "Why is there a penny in the stomach?" Fry: "I can explain. See, I found a penny in the street but it wasn't enough for another egg salad sandwich."
"Why don't they give medicine from this era to futuristic parasites from the space that rebuild human tissue in seconds?" Yes Doctor Mike, I wonder why...
One of my-hell, *it is* my favorite _Futurama_ episode. For anyone wondering why the jai alai scoops at 5:49-it was covered by a deleted scene: someone had stolen all the silverware from the kitchenette.

Every time I watch one of your videos after I go to the doctor and I have a bad experience, I just wish I could find a doctor like you because the gods know I don't want to go to the doctor and have a traumatic experience that only helps to reinforce a phobia
Thank you Dr Mike for letting me know that the worms I had for years as a child were pin worms (if anyone is wondering why I had them for years, tldr chronic medical neglect, to the point where I learned very young that there was no point in bothering to tell them when something was wrong, because they were just going to tease me and do nothing. This is to the point where my parents didn't realize until I was about 15 or 16 that my toes are all deformed from being forced to wear shoes that were too small when I was little, despite the fact that I (understandably, in my opinion) hate wearing shoes and usually wear sandals or walked around the house barefoot. So yeah, if you're a parent, actually listen to your kids when they tell you something is wrong, and don't make fun of them for it.
“What kind of elevator exists in the colon that gets you to the brain?” If I were to venture a guess I would wager that it is Futurama’s abstract representation of the vagus nerve.
As a proud parent of an 16 mo old baby who just got over HFM they contracted from their daycare, I did not need to worry about them also getting worms. Going to have nightmares now.
Don't let them play in any sandboxes outside either, especially if they are uncovered, as animals can go to the bathroom in them (the sandboxes) and various parasites and bacteria can be transferred that way... (I work in animal hospital)
The Penny in the stomach is probably a double joke. Both that Fry is so dumb, he ate a penny at some point, and it's a sly reference to the giant coin in the Batcave.
I always look forward to the outro of Dr. Mike's videos because in the background, you could see him awkwardly doing everything except looking into the camera 😂
Half the time I don't know what you're talking about cause you're talking doctor but for some reason I LOVE watching your videos even when I don't know what's going on I will sit here and watch you for hours and feel like I'm learning smt
Hey Mike, I think the elevator is supposed to be the Vagal nerve. It makes sense being the only cranial nerve to extend below the head. Just an LPN student's thought for your question regarding the colon to brain elevator.
Dr. Mike mentioned the penny, but he never expressed surprise at how regularly Fry appears to eat his silverware. Also, something Dr. Varshavsky never mentioned: when Fry cuts his own brain, he shouldn't say "Ow". The brain has no sensory neurons. In fact, people experiencing brain surgery can stay awake through the whole procedure. It's wild.

@@karloswald407 youre watching the wrong animated show if you want or are looking for ethical
They might work on regular worms, but good luck against worms with swords and lasers and jazzercise.
Set in the 31st century no less. Even if you try and bring cold hard logic into the equation you're left with a scenario where you're assuming the effects of 21st century medicine on parasitic worms from the 31st century who may or may not be extra terrestrial.
that's why i like his videos. because seeing him trying to rationalize things is entertaining.
But we're here because he's a doctor, not a linguist.
he also got his grammar wrong too 😭
Also he's wrong, "yo" is also "me" depending on context
@@GastNdorf So did the 50 shades of brown take that and run with it to create yo whassup?
dr mike takes everything so literally and grasps so little slang that sometimes i wonder if he's the same species as drax the destroyer
Gosh I LIVE for these cartoon medical accuracy vids!! They're the best
"What about the worms in the other parts of his body?"
Listen, this is going yo be one hell of a bowel movement. We'll be lucky if he keeps his skeleton."
One of my jokes from this episode. Behind:
Professor: be very quiet, we’re in the ear.
Amy (whispering): Okay Professor
Professor: WHAT?
Fry (to Leela): What about what?
And when their in the circulatory system and pass some cholesterol and Zoidberg spreads a bit on some bread saying it spreads like good cholesterol but tastes like bad cholesterol
@1Legofilms
I love the, "what about what" line! I use it every time i hear someone say, "what?" It's such a great line and a great show!!!
"I like to think of it as Caribbean Drano."
I remember that one...
10:12 “Why is there a penny in the stomach?”
… it’s Fry, Doc.
I think that was either the entrance or exit point of the tiny ship in _Fantastic Voyage_ or _Inner Space._
I love Easter Eggs. 😁
One of Futurama's finest. They actually do use a de-wormer in the sequel episode to this that came out last year! One guess what de-wormer it was that made a funny punchline
6:14 if you look hard enough, you can see their ship without the magnifying glass.
I mean you are not wrong, also, only using a magnifying glass would not make something microscopic suddenly appear to the "naked eye".
😂😂😂 You remembered that perfectly. I think we just watched that one, too.
@@jodil1209 Google helped nail it down precisely.
😂😂😂😂😂
Today was my first day shadowing a doctor, and so watching this video I can now understand a lot more of the terms that were mentioned in here!
Parasite Lost is one of my favorite epsiodes!
The worms to me definitely appear to mostly just be your garden-variety earthworms. They have clitellum and segments. They would be Annelids (segmented worms) which is a separate Phylum from round worms (Nematodes) or flat worms (platyhelminthes).
I am sure they just made them look like that because it’s easily recognizable, but I love that of all the parasitic worms, they ended up picking one of the few non-parasitic species.
if i remember correctly Futurama has some of if not the most over qualified writers in terms of scientific and academic achievements.
A bunch had PHDs in applied mathematics. The body swapping episode has a published proof on how it would work
So many fun tech references
It's sci fi, these parasitic worms could be working in some symbiotic or mutualistic fashion, though there's an episode in the recent season from last summer that also featured parasitic worms, possibly of a similar variety, but they're doing the reverse of what they did to Fry. Episode is even called Parasites Regained
“Watching Dr. Mike react to ‘Futurama’ medical scenes is like having a backstage pass to the ER. His knowledge and humor make learning about medicine entertaining!❤
0:16 i love that put ´fresh’ in quotation marks
13:36 it's actually a beneficial relationship for fry. They make him stronger smarter and gave him a healing factor
12:18 it could be that of a symbiotic relationship between him and the worms, he gives them nutrients and they’ll just remake them to their original desgin
I mean think about it, would you burn down your house to stay warm?
Tapeworms have the protective mechanism from the GI system. Some treatments disrupt their protection against the GI system where the host metabolizes them.
Doctor Mike: "Why is there a penny in the stomach?"
Fry: "I can explain. See, I found a penny in the street but it wasn't enough for another egg salad sandwich."
"Why don't they give medicine from this era to futuristic parasites from the space that rebuild human tissue in seconds?"
Yes Doctor Mike, I wonder why...
That 'OBLUNGATTA' got me really bad😂😂😂
The Elevator could be the Vagus Nerve?? 😂
Hahaha "The Myelin Sheaths"! NO! NOT THE MEDULLA OBLONGATA😮😂
One of my fav episodes of Futurama..Fav line? It's like there's a party in my mouth and everyone's throwing up😆😆😆
8:10 I like to get rid of my earwax, because it's itchy, and makes it harder for me to hear. I tend to wait till it starts itching to remove it.
i never knew that earwax was supposed to be protective! thanks for bringing that up :D
One of my-hell, *it is* my favorite _Futurama_ episode.
For anyone wondering why the jai alai scoops at 5:49-it was covered by a deleted scene: someone had stolen all the silverware from the kitchenette.
"Why is there a penny in the stomach?"
Because it is *Fry!*
😂🎉😂😂😂
yeah, there was one episode where he had a nickel up his nose.
I love how Chill he is. Dr Mike ain’t picking at Everything and more so having fun with it.
Does a reaction to an entire episode of Futurama, doesn't react to one of my all-time favorite lines. "Listen, this is gonna be one hell of a bowel movement. Afterwards he'll be lucky if he has any bones left!"
Personally, I'm fond of the Caribbean Drain-O bit.
I literally was watching your other cartoon videos last night and thought, "I wish he would do a Futurama video." Lo and behold, here it is. It's like I manifested it into existence. 😂
Every time I watch one of your videos after I go to the doctor and I have a bad experience, I just wish I could find a doctor like you because the gods know I don't want to go to the doctor and have a traumatic experience that only helps to reinforce a phobia
Watching Doctor Mike is a great way to end the day
This is awesome. Watching some futurama AND learning haha
“Why is there a penny in his stomach”
Fry was being Fry 🤣
"there are actually some worms that can make their way to the brain"
*checks news*
I came here for the JFK references
Woah pill camera?? That's super cool and I had not heard of those before!
Doctor Mike: *Looks like a normal person*
Also Doctor Mike: *”My head is too small!”*
Ikr, every time he says that I'm like "no its not" 😂
Thank you Dr Mike for letting me know that the worms I had for years as a child were pin worms (if anyone is wondering why I had them for years, tldr chronic medical neglect, to the point where I learned very young that there was no point in bothering to tell them when something was wrong, because they were just going to tease me and do nothing.
Oh f*ck yes!! I love Futurama & I love Doctor Mike. Perfect combo, chefs kiss!
"When I look into a patient's GI tract". ME: "Nice flex there doc! Does it work as a pickup line as well?". Lol 😂
Ugh no that's gross!
15:40 As a Spanish speaker let me tell you that "yo" is fine. "Me" doesn't work the same in both languages.
As a proud parent of an 16 mo old baby who just got over HFM they contracted from their daycare, I did not need to worry about them also getting worms. Going to have nightmares now.
Yes, pinworms, and kids tend to spread them around to others bc children's hygiene sucks...
“Your fine” is the response every doctor’s kid gets.
Worm:"He's bluffing! No creature would knowingly make an ass out of itself!"
Fry:"Obviously you've never been in love."
LOVE that exchange
Half the time I don't know what you're talking about cause you're talking doctor but for some reason I LOVE watching your videos even when I don't know what's going on I will sit here and watch you for hours and feel like I'm learning smt
Dr Mike: worms can get to the brain
RFK Jr.: hold my worm
It's wild.
There was a cut scene that explained what was up with that. The worms needed the metal for their civilization I suppose.
I have IBS and I can confirm that this is literally what it feels like is happening inside you.
I remember the Untold Stories of the ER episode where a driver and rear passenger of a car accident had a metal pipe from a chain link fence go through both.
If I remember correctly the biggest issue was rapid separation because one was thoracic and one was abdominal.
0:58 "what's the worst that could happen?" "A lot"
The intro got me laughing so hard😂
0:18: Notice the quotation marks...
You could get so much mileage out of videos featuring Dr. John Zoidberg and his medically questionable shenanigans 😂
Nothing beats watching Dr Mike before bed 🩷
P.S u should get a dog and call it Panda.
Then you will have Panda and Bear
Eating chocolate chip cookies does.
How about calling it Teddy.

I love your reaction videos, mostly because I'm learning new medical stuff whenever you analyse the conditions in the scenes
The way the worms fix fry without going through the normal stages of healing makes me think huh there must quadrillions of these things.
10:12 you clearly don't know Fry very well
