They had done their own stuff before joining together in 2005. They brought variety to SNL bringing really great sounding beats and musical element with them. There have some great classic sounding hip hop beats from them on like "Lazy Sunday - SNL Digital Short", "Natalie Raps - SNL Digital Short" ,"Natalie’s Rap 2 - SNL" there are many great ones. That is the reason why there are people like Nicki Minaj, T-Pain and many other big names in these well made music sketches.

This doesn't explain their other laundry list of celebrity cameos, but what does is that for a stint they were all also writers on SNL, and a lot of their big hits had videos that debuted on SNL because of that - this also worked out since the hosts would often get in on the songs.
