Now go back to “Motherlover” and watch the opening clip of the video where they threw the “gifts” away sir, you’ll see the connection. These videos have been awesome!
_This_ was the thing that made me take Justin Timberlake seriously as a comedy actor and an actor in general. Prior to this, I wrote him off as a generic pop star trying his hand at acting. This made me see him as a genuinely _hilarious_ person, not afraid to poke fun at himself. It made me see him in a whole new light, I am a big JT fan now, both his music and acting.
I think I started respecting him when I saw him in the NBA all-star game. Well kinda. I still thought he was a generic pop star but his play on the court actually made me pay attn to his music and then I realized it was actually pretty good
This was one of the first skits/digital shorts Lonely island wrote for Saturday night live and it came about from them discussing their love for 90s R&B. I guess Justin Timberlake read it and was like yes this is the one lmao
Justin actually tells the story of how the song came about during his Hot Ones interview- wing 7, question starts around the 15:45 mark th-cam.com/video/VJeC0ChCuao/w-d-xo.html
Ig you remember, “Motherlover” takes place 5 months or so later in these characters’ lives, and it opens with the duo throwing out two boxes. They also refer to the mother lover idea as the “second best idea that we ever had.” (The best idea being the d*** in a box, obviously)
Haha yes I was thinking of Natalies rap when he asked how’d they get those famous actresses in another video, I was like he has to hear what they got Natalie Portman to do
The woman at the start was also one of the lead roles in the movie "Idiocracy". If you haven't seen it yet, it is well worth the watch. Described in one word, this movie is uncanny
Narrator: As the 21st century began, human evolution was at a turning point. Natural selection, the process by which the strongest, the smartest, the fastest, reproduced in greater numbers than the rest, a process which had once favored the noblest traits of man, now began to favor different traits. Most science fiction of the day predicted a future that was more civilized and more intelligent. But as time went on, things seemed to be heading in the opposite direction. A dumbing down. How did this happen? Evolution does not necessarily reward intelligence. With no natural predators to thin the herd, it began to simply reward those who reproduced the most, and left the intelligent to become an endangered species. 😉😁🤣🤣🤣
Every year SNL airs their "best of Christmas skits" compilation video/episode. It has some of the best and most popular Christmas themed skits throughout the years, like all the way back to their early years. Its my mom and my guilty pleasure every Christmas. This song is always one of the clips. XD
Not musical, but It’d be interesting to see the reaction of year end SNL Colin Jost versus Michael Che jokes they write for each other, Che is brutal on that and you can just see Colin die inside having to read them out live, love how they’re the absolute best of friends, but Che always throws him under the bus every time regardless - so massively inappropriate, but Colin’s reaction to ‘God do I really have to say this out loud, there goes my career’ thought process alone just gets me every time.
This was a great skit from SNL!! I remember dressing up with a friend for Halloween when this was released!! It was hilariously amazing walking around while people recognized the outfits!!
The amazing thing about this song is that this was on SNL, on broadcast TV, where FCC rules. They were pitching the idea and the FCC said, as long as they bleep it, there's really nothing wrong.
When Sandburg went into the office of Lorn Michaels and said I have a song with Justin Timberlake He said just do it . He tried to tell him about the song and Lorn said if you have Justin Timberlake in it just do it,
Pleeeeeeeease watch "The Shooting (AKA Dear Sister)" by The Lonely Island. That short changed comedy entirely. Also, those boxes that their genitals were in? Those were the gift boxes they threw away at the very beginning of "Motherlover".
I think it would really help to know Lonely Island started life with SNL skits - that's why the early videos are so random and have so many famous folks right from the start (and a live audience laughing)
What made this so funny when it came out is that no one knew what the song was called when it aired on SNL...and it was during Christmas...and I personally never expected this on SNL at the time. It was great 😂 "Oh no, where's the button at?" In a box, sir.
You're right that it feels like a 90's song. Both Adam Samberg and Justin Timberlake are big fans of 90's R&B music, so this was their take on an absurd parody of it.
if I am correct, you are correct that this is one of their earliest songs, I think this was the second song they released after, "It's gonna be a great day" which was shown on SNL, it jump started their career
The fact that Timberlake and Samburg made these inconic characters cracks me up. Even had them appear on a Dating Game skit on SNL 40th anniversary show.
You need to watch their very first SNL Digital Short, "Lazy Sunday." That was the world's introduction to The Loney Island. And I would describe The Lonely Island with only two words: absurdity personified
This is the first in a classic trilogy-gotta do 3 Way with Lady Gaga The production value is different because this first one was an SNL sketch and the others were actual videos they made.
I've never done this myself, but I do remember seeing several people dressing up like this for any costume party/Halloween for the next year or two after this song came out.
😆I downloaded this album when it came out and I haven’t listened to it in years and I’m laughing at this reaction!! I knew you’d make it hilarious 🤟🏼🫶🏼
This is from Saturday Night Live. The woman is Maya Rudolf. Maya'"s mother is Minnie Ripperton. Remember the song Loving You (is easy cuz you're beautiful)? If you listen closely to the end, Ripperton says, "I love you Maya"
This definitely ‘popped up’ at Mardi Gras as a costume a few years running😂😂 Fun fact: that pooping bride is the daughter of the late, great Minnie Ripperton!!! ‘Loving You’ was recorded in a little house in Gainesville FL. If you play the track alllll the way to the end & crank your volume, you can hear Minnie singing to her baby girl: Maya Maya, Maya Maya… the label felt it was too personal to leave so pronounced. But it’s still there & so heartwarming as Minnie passed only a few years later when Maya was still a very young girl. It must be really cool for her to have❤️ Someone’s already mentioned the ‘backstage at the CMAs’ refers to a then just-happened incident when Tim McGraw & Kenny Chesney ummm ‘borrowed’ 2 NYPD horses & were arrested. Ahhhh… to be young again😂😂😂 Stay safe & love much!💖
Also there’s a couple references to this song in motherlover, like the boxes they they throw away at the start and the line “this is the 2nd best idea we’ve ever had” lol
Lonely Island were still fairly new to SNL at this time. Andy was a cast-member and the other two were writers. TH-cam was also new at this time and they helped popularize the site.
I think the shabby production value was on purpose - you were right, it's a 90s R&B homage of two dude dudes in a downtown baseball court. It's a naughty Boyz II Men re-make but the other two didn't make it. These II have a special bond as we all know too well!
Years ago, I dated a man that woke me up Christmas morning in a suit and tie and gift box strapped to the front. He was also playing this song. He put a lot of effort into pulling that off. To date, it’s the funniest thing I have ever experienced.
I can't believe no one has commented that this is a rip of the look of Color Me Badd....they acknowledged it and it smacked me in the face the first time I saw it.
I remember me and my brother switching channel and stumbling into it without the name The first time we heard it we looked at each other to make sure we understood Best way to discover a song
The spoof about this whole thing is that back in the 90’s with “Artists” like Kieth Sweat, Genuine, and R. Kelly, the lyrics in SNL’s “$&ck in a Box” we’re not too far from the garbage lyrics of mid to late 90’s R&B…sad to say tho…the lyrics back then seem tame to the “R&B” & Hip Hop horror listened to by young people today…
In the 70's early eighties, there was a movie, (Maybe the movie 'Diner' or 'Porky's) where the guy is at the movies with his girl and he cuts a hole in the popcorn and sticks his thing in it. The girl keeps eating popcorn until she gets down to the real nitty-gritty, so to speak. Since then I have seen many variations of this comic gag. This song is the funniest of all of them.
I'm pretty sure this was the first "Lonely Island" style SNL Digital short. I know the story is he approached Justin Timberlake ( that weeks Host/Musical Artist ) and pitched a rough idea and Justin loved the idea so much he helped write it and flesh out all the cliche music video bits. It was of course a major hit, then fiollowed by Motherlover, then Lady Ga Ga joined them for a threeway.
The Golden Rule(3-Way) is the 3rd and final chapter to the trilogy. As for the production values, Dick in a Box came out while Andy was writing/acting on SNL, so they had a tiny skit budget. Mother Lover came out on Lonely Island's second album, so they definitely had far more to spend. The Golden Rule is off their third album, and, again, has higher production values as well.
The title does give the plot of the song away. But imagine what it was like, watching the Christmas special for Saturday Night Live. Then this comes on with no warning of what you were about to see 😳
This was so big when it came out that a car dealership from I believe Kentucky remade it to be keys in a box. It was taken down from TH-cam over what I’m sure was a copyright claim but it was fantastic lol. If I’m not mistaken it was a Cadillac dealer. I’m sure it exists somewhere on the internet but I’ve not been able to fine it for years. Maybe someone else watching this has also seen it.
You gotta understand when this was originally aired for the first time, we knew nothing about the song, the video or what it was about. So the first time hearing and seeing “dick in a box” was shocking and funny as hell.
I recently saw Seth Meyer interview magician David Copperfield, and they talked about how Andy Samberg's bachelor party went to a DC performance and afterward, David did a custom Phallus-in-a-box illusion!
Just imagine. You've got Justin Timberlake coming on your show and you have to pitch him sketches to be in for the show. This is your idea and you've gotta make that pitch 🤣🤣 It was great when it came out because it showed Justin is a real dude.
At the time...This was pure hotness. Everybody was talking about it and Justin had already been a household name. The Lonely Island album didn't even come out till months later...Which that song was big. That song was just as absurd. The name was Jizz in my Pants!
In Motherlover when they say, "this is the second best idea that we've ever had"... This was the best idea they ever had.
This is eternal
Also that’s why they were walking out of jail at the beginning of mother lover
@@BucBoy63 With the dick boxes
Their golden rule is another great idea they have had
Nothing gets passed you.
Now go back to “Motherlover” and watch the opening clip of the video where they threw the “gifts” away sir, you’ll see the connection. These videos have been awesome!
he will never go back to motherlover lmfao
I already told bhim that when he watched mother lover
It also says “5 months later,” and they’re getting out of jail.
And then "the golden rule" pick off after "Motherlover" Should have gone for a marathon.
"The Golden Rule" is the next song after "Mother Lover" hope you watch that one next lol.
she knows her shit
i second her order of requests ♥️
Franchise killer.
and after that would be nice to hear akon i just had sex
With a honey in the middle there's some leeway.

His hand at acting. Good one.
I think I started respecting him when I saw him in the NBA all-star game. Well kinda. I still thought he was a generic pop star but his play on the court actually made me pay attn to his music and then I realized it was actually pretty good
Aww cmon, he was hilarious in The Love Guru.. “I make for you a Canadian pizza… Eets the pop tart with the ketchup”!!!!😂😂😂😂
Let's not forget that this song WON AN EMMY!
Wait what?
This was one of the first skits/digital shorts Lonely island wrote for Saturday night live and it came about from them discussing their love for 90s R&B. I guess Justin Timberlake read it and was like yes this is the one lmao

1990s r Kelly I don't see nothing wrong with a little bump and grind was contemporaneous
When it came on SNL, I didn't know the title of the song. So it was one of the best surprises ever.
"Finest Girl (Bin Laden Song)" by lonely island!! You think the title is crazy? You have no idea😂😂😂
Just scrolled through the comments and saw this after posting pretty much the same thing a minute ago… that ‘terrorise’ line had me in stitches….
"I just had sex" is still in my opinion their best song.
Idk, 'Jizzed In My Pants" is up there too.
@@jeremiahkivi4256 Very true. But I can play 'I just had sex' in family gatherings without anyone thinking it strange lol

Not enough love for Kristin Wiig and Maya Rudolph here. Their reactions in the video are perfect and really sell the 90s R&B vibe.

"I just had sex" by Lonely Island. You will enjoy it.
I thought it was ultimate song but "Finest Girl" in a few comments below is also a good choise.
@@GrandeMilito22 no he hasn’t, I just checked
90's R&B song, exactly! JT and lonely island/andy samberg literally connected over their shared love of that specific genre! lmfao
Color Me Bad was a huge influence on these characters and song style
I am so glad you caught on to the 90's R&B vibe. An often overlooked part of this great parody.
Seriously. Bullseye on the fashion, dance moves, music production, and 90s R&B video tropes :D

Always reminds me of Brian McKnight's back to one from the 90s.
There's a clip of JT performing this live at the tail end of a concert he did, for the audience members that didn't clear out immediately.
