What is a VIRTUAL credit/debit card? (2021)

  • Credit cards are a notoriously insecure means of payment and credit card fraud is one of the most common types of identity theft in the US. We give out our credit card number constantly without even thinking about it, and with it our name and home address.
Enter Virtual Credit Cards: they're like a VPN for your credit card. No more revealing private information to every stranger from whom you want to make a purchase. No more handing out the keys to the kingdom that allow anyone to draw money from your account.
Crypto is my preferred means of payment because you retain sovereignty over your money, you can have much better financial privacy, and you can save a bunch of money if you use services like Purse.io, Bitrefill, and Dash Direct.
    BUT...
Some people are not yet ready to take the plunge completely into crypto. So if you enjoy the world of recurring payments and credit card purchases but are looking for a more private option, VIRTUAL credit cards may be for you!
In this video, Josh Summers from “All Things Secured” explains how virtual credit cards work and why they're great for giving back some privacy and control over your money.

NO! if you cancel a virtual card because you cannot efficiently cancel a subscription then SOME providers will build up a debt for you to pay - even if you don't USE the service. Then a year later you get a HUGE menacing bill for your debt AND the services of a debt collection agency. That is where it is handy that the provider does not have your real details.

A long time ago a door to door salesman questioned why I was reluctant to give his "company" my credit card details over the phone. He said nobody can misuse the information. Oh really, I said. Should I put out all my savings on the front doorstep before bedtime and just hope it will be there the next day? He claimed it was not like that, but he couldn't explain why not. I still maintain that it is. I once went abroad and a checkout operator asked for my card. She said I didn't need to enter my PIN and they didn't even give a receipt. So they only needed the card number which they then had on record. Should that make me feel secure?

I never understood/never going to understand the creditcard obsession in US. I wasn't aware of it when I visited the states more than ten years ago. Those two month were quite a journey without creditcard.
The only reason for me getting one a year ago was for buying things outside my country online. Therefore, I am glad for having such possibilities like online prepaid creditcards. Still not as good as cash, but it hides my information and does brake the surveillance chain of my bank. Creating onetime cards is also a neat feature.

    • @NaomiBrockwellTV
      @NaomiBrockwellTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

If you use a credit card, the bank and the government already have an overview of all your transactions, and you're also spreading your personal information across countless websites. If you use a virtual credit card, you limit that risk. This is not a tool for anonymity from the government, if you want that then privacy coins and cash are the only options.

Great video, very informative about what virtual CC is. I was thinking about setting up virtual CC, but is it is link to bank accounts with MY MONEY. This is the same reason I don't use debit cards. Its ALWAYS better to gamble with OTHER PPL's MONEY...which is what credit cards does. All my cards are Zero liability for frauds and I have always notice the CC company within a few days of any fraudulent charges. 12yrs in and I have never had to pay CC interest. I might have to open a free chequing account with the bare minimum balance solely for Virtual CC.

All these terms are new to me but so memorable and poetic that I'll bet I remember a few: to hash, to salt, rainbow table attack (I'm assuming that's not something that happens at Pride parade). 100k iterations I can probably figure out. Split key encryption, data isolation, and what's not to love about, was it: three physical locations? I'm diggin the cloak and dagger. And I have to say the ethical ramifications are important to me. Anyone, anyone at all, who is mining me for data is a creep. I have to say that all these peeping Toms everywhere remind me of the Bible's "seeing that we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses." Hebrews chapter 11, if memory serves.

This is a great video Naomi! All the way up to crypto in the last minute or so. OK now you have me thinking that your supporting crypto because you've got a lot of eggs in that basket. China just dropped crypto, the leader of world manufacturing. Pigs get fat, hogs go to the slaughter. I mean crypto is still riding the drip from Elon Musk. Just know when to get out. Great video tho I really liked the virtual credit card protections. 💳

Decentralized permissionless money is the future. The fact that an authoritarian regime doesn’t want people to have it shows how powerful it is. I believe in giving people tools that will give them back more privacy and control over their lives.

Rubbish. I spent ten minutes watching what is basically an advert for one card, only to find that, when I tried to register for it, it's only available in one country.

This video is bullshit, these aren't "virtual credit cards" they are prepaid debit cards.

Actually how the cards are funded depends completely on the company. Some link to your credit card, some link to your bank account.

I have recently applied to Klutch. I have not yet used it because I'm not sure of the best way to pay it off. I chose Klutch because it's a regular credit card. But I failed learn that they want the same access to my accounts as the others in order to pay the bill. My initial, but incorrect assumption (and yes, I know what that means...) was that I'd have a bill to pay just like my regular credit card. But it appears they don't bill you. They want online access to your accounts. It seems they want the same access as all the others, (Privacy, IronVest, etc) ... Instant which is Direct Access to my bank account via Plaid, Manual which is Routing/Account# to my bank account or pay via Wire Transfer. I am still new at this, but none of these options strike me as safe.
I have looked on TH-cam but can' t seem to find a video on how to securely fund these services. Between Privacy, Klutch & IronVest, all of whom would really like my bank login creds, is there some kind of documentation or video out there that could guide someone on the best secure funding practices to these companies? I mean, the whole purpose behind virtual credit cards is security. But they all seem to want direct access to your bank which kinda defeats the purpose.
I love the idea of virtual credit cards but I'm not yet comfortable giving these particular entities my bank info. Maybe I'm already doing this in other ways and just haven't connected the thoughts yet. But I would sure like some kind of info or best practices on the best way to fund these services.
    Thank you!

I thought this as with others from NB was informative and I built a privacy plan around a number of points that did include the privacy.com service as related here. While this video says they do not SELL my information, sadly when you read their privacy policy, there are an quite a few ways they share the various multitude of bits of private information they collect. HUGE non fan of the codicils carving out/requiring I share my location, though that is by no means even the meat of the list. This did not reinforce my standing high opinion of NB's advice. I abandoned the plan... the thing I need/want appears no more than bait that is not really the thing that is actually available. The appearance to me is that they aren't just funding this by related fees in the process but by selling "us".

Can you give me an example of how they might be making money including the type of data you believe they're sharing? Interested to learn more about your concerns.

@@NaomiBrockwellTV The open-minded tone of your reply is atypical for the web and appreciated. Thanks.
I derive no advantage of me going deeper on the matter in a public setting. I'm just describing my personal decision vs commenting on any third party's sincerity or providing any advice. The language is squishy and ambiguous to me enough that I'm out. And the thing about privacy is.. be perfect or don't waste your time.
You covered the topic so I am assuming you're interested. My intent was to prompt you for your thoughts. I'm not the well-known internet figure here so permit me to equivalently turn your question around.. can you convincingly say those privacy policy terms are safe and solid bet beyond any reasonable concern?
You do a great job.. I remain subscribed (elsewhere) and look forward to learning more from your work.
