Without exception, I love your channel the best of all the homesteading channels I watch. You are genuine, personable, industrious, knowledgeable, intelligent, entertaining, and overall just beautiful people…raising a beautiful family, and living a beautiful life. I love your honesty about everything…what you do, how you do it, the good, the bad, the ups and downs, the successes and failures. I love that you don’t just show the highlight reel…but that you demonstrate the beauty in the dirt and sweat and work, and that in every mundane task there can be joy if we choose to look for it. I love that you give yourself grace. Grace to be tired, or annoyed, or weary. I teared up when you mentioned the paper plates. I know it’s silly. But I feel extremely guilty when I take shortcuts from the “perfect” life I’ve envisioned. Your example of balance, intentionality, industry and love…for God, each other, your family, and your farm…are encouraging and empowering. Thank you for sharing with the world. You are a light. ❤

I have been waiting for you to posto hoping you will see this: You always show very clear plans of what you will do every day, and you fulfill those plans even if it means working into the dark. It would be very interesting for all of us to know how you go about plannnina: day by day? Weekly? Do you plan together or each in his/her own domain (kitchen, garden, animals etc. )I am sure this would be a video useful to all of us! (I think you haven´t talked about this yet- I have watched practically all your episodes and don´t remember seeing planning as a mains subject...)
Seeing your beautiful bread & talking about creating holiday memories brought me back to my childhood. My mother was not a very good cook or baker, BUT she made delicious homemade bread. She would only bake a few loaves from Thanksgiving to Christmas, then I would have to wait a whole year to have it again. The memories of the warm bread & butter, surrounded by the Christmas decorations are very fond memories. It's been 50 years, and it still makes me smile. Good for you on taking control of the holiday chaos & making beautiful memories with your children.
I am so with you on slowing down this December enjoying the things of Christmas, movies, music, baking. I have 5 kids for Christmas morning and the other 3 have families I am done with shopping and wrapping. Now on to baking and all the fun!
I absolutely admire your "Sunday resets" in meal prep. It would be really cool to see how you meal prep and plan out meals for each week so that you don't just have the same thing every week!
When we raised cattle in Kentucky we had livestock tank heaters. They were life savers when it was really cold. We had them in the pasture as well as the barn.
Love, love, love this channel! The chicken coop looks great, so much progress was made. Enjoyed watching all of the chores one needs to do when returning home
I've been trying butternut squash in my pumpkin pies, thanks to your videos. I also substituted the condensed milk with coconut milk, and it works wonderfully.
I read recently about beet juice in water to lower the freezing temperature? I haven’t tried it yet, but that could be super helpful with animal water!
Wow, beef sticks in the stocking for the win! What a terrific idea. I’m always looking for things to put in my grandkids stockings that are not candy. Heck, my kids would’ve loved this when they were little lol
Loved this video! Very dynamic and we could see you were happy getting back home and back to daily living. Charging our batteries is so essential. Looking forward to the Christmas videos! It might have been cold but we only felt the warmth of all the preparations. TY
You buy apples in plastic bags and put them in plastic bags? Here in germany you nomally buy apples without any package or in cardstock boxes. And you have to bring your own reusable bag or buy a paperbag. You can not even buy plastic bags anymore.
Hi from MN, have you considered a stock tank heater. We can get them for $40-50. For calves we like the one that sinks. They like to play with the floating type. So much easier than breaking ice every morning.
We use tank heaters too for our chickens. They are a lifesaver because my husband and I work other jobs too. We just have a bucket that is bungeed to the chicken coop so it doesn't tip over and fill it every day with new water. Tank heater keeps it thawed even below zero.
Have you tried the birdbath de-overs? I have my chickens on a nipple water bucket and use the de-icer in the bucket to keep it from freezing. The water stays clean too!
Good video. Cody, I would suggest a floating tank heater or a sinking one. I live very north west of you where it also gets very cold and I use them with success. A 1500 W heater will use about 20.00 of power but its worth it....better than hauling or chopping ice ( I have done my share and still do pail water)....and cheaper than a waterer. Winter and water, so much fun. Was surprised the pellet stove does not have a thermostat on it....I thought they all did.
I've only just started following you guys in the last couple of months so you might have shared in a previous video, but from one curly girl to another, can you please share what products you use in your hair Michelle? Your curls always look stunning!!
Just cut the crust off for the kids, and compost etc. -OR- Random idea is freeze the crusts, collect over time, and toast and cut for croutons for salads or soups.
Coconut milk or cream will separate when heated with something acidic like tea, coffee or cocoa leaving you with something oily rather than creamy. The only milk that will work is soy. Any other plant milks need to be specially processed or have additives to use in hot beverages. I suggest getting a good organic soy milk. It's nutritious and delicious. The nuttiness of it goes really well with chocolate.
Reccomendation regarding dairy-free hot chocolates: I really enjoyed using homemade cashew milk from the blender (after the nuts had a good soak). Homemade cashew milk thickens as it cooks, so not only was the hot chocolate creamy, but thickened. Obviously if you don't like it thick you could add more water to the cashew milk. Maybe give it a try and see what you think? Best wishes!
I do appreciate you describing what you do with the store bought groceries. It helps the rest of us justify some of our not-so-perfect purchases, too. haha
Michelle, I have been dairy free myself since 2016. I noticed you shop at Walmart too. The So Delicious brand of coconut milk is good. Enjoy life brands for baking chocolate chips are really good, no dairy, and they are good for just snacking on. So Delicious has a good number of dairy free products. I especially like the Carmel pecan ice cream however its expensive, and I just buy it as a special desert treat. The So Delicious cool whip toping is like having ice cream on a warm apple pie. I really don't miss dairy products.
We also got that Arctic air and lots of snow here in Michigan. But as if today high of 48 with light rain our snow will be gone. But we have cold again Wednesday with high of 21 and a low of 15. Snow. The vision was amazing. I wBt to make sourdough cookies. Thank you for sharing till next time God Bless.
Maybe you already have but can you share how you are able to get away from your homestead for more than a day? Do you have someone nearby who comes over every day or someone who can stay in your home to take care of your animals and whatever else needs taken care of? We live in Michigan but none of either side of our families live in this state so to visit them means two days of just travel time. My husband wasn’t able to come with us when we visited family this past summer for 6 days so he could care for our animals and garden. We’re hoping to get to know more of the locals and put aside money to pay someone to take care of our homestead so we can visit family together next time.
My dad lives nearby and is able to take care of the chores for us. I hope you’re able to find someone reliable to help out so travel is possible for you!
I was severely lactose intolerant for 15 years. Scarlet Johnson (Alpha Omega Wellness) in Utica, Ohio helped me. She guided me on a protocol to clear the mucus from the villi in my stomach. I went from 14 lactaid pills to try to enjoy any dairy to drinking raw milk by the glass and having pasteurized icecream and cheese. Hope that helps! Yay Ohio.
I am very happy to hear you like South African Rooibos tea. It is great for colicky babies and we have a fantastic range of soaps, etc made from Rooibos. ❤
This may be a dumb question but how come you guys don’t use a greenhouse to help grow some things in the wintertime? I know the goal is to feed the family for the year but wouldn’t that give a nice boost for the upcoming spring?
I am starting my baking journey and I have watched one of your videos and commented about the recipe but I unfortunately I still haven’t got your sourdough bread recipe😢 I’d be very happy to get a copy of your recipe while I wait on my starter🥰
The instant pot...😂... I wanted so badly to love mine. I was getting ready to donate the thing bc I prefer the crock pot...on a whim I tried two things; rice and hardboiled eggs. It now lives in my house purely for those uses and those uses alone. 😂 It broke my appliance rule of it needs to regularly used and serve multiple purposes just purely because peeling hard-boiled fresh farm eggs is not a pain and I dont have to babysit the pot for rice while caring for three kids three and under because it never fails and my rice is perfect every.single.time. 😁 Merry Christmas from southeastern Ohio.
I mentioned your problem with cow's milk and she suggested cashew milk, which has a creamy consistency, may work for hot chocolate. I didn't know if you had tried it.
Have you or your daughter been tested for Celiac Disease? Don’t answer that but you keep mentioning digestive issues and doctors don’t test often. Just wanted to put it out there. FYI celiac can cause a lactose intolerance too.
If you are celuac you may try A2 milk, it's new but if you have an autoinmune you need to go gluten free and Cow dairy free, change to A2 milk (sheep, goat or buffala). The problem is the protein (Caseine) not de sugar (lactose). Cow dairy is type 1 Caseine while A2 is type 2. You may be not intolerante to lactose but to A1.milk. Just try! ❤
I have silent celiac - no real symptoms until dairy became an issue. Diagnosed, went gluten free, internal damage healed, now I can eat/drink dairy to my hearts content! Miss real bread and pasta but being able to have cheese and ice cream again is a win in my book!🎉
HeyMichelle, does your oven have a “bread proof“ button? I’ve had my oven for years and for whatever reason I never noticed the button before, but it is the perfect setting for bread to rise in! 😊
If you want another fun thing with the kids, you can keep the wood ash to make a glaze on local clay/pottery products, etc. Thanks for keeping it real!
Kroger sells Organic Almond Malk- I did not mispell that. That is its name it is awesome! It comes unsweetened and vanilla. My kids love it with cereal and the unsweetened is wonderful in baking. Its in the refrigerator aisle.

When we raised cattle in Kentucky we had livestock tank heaters. They were life savers when it was really cold. We had them in the pasture as well as the barn.
I love the efficiency from both of you! You guys got so much done in one day it is very inspiring!! 🙌🏼

Love watching you guys! Inspiring. Happy holidays!
I love my chopper, just like yours. Also love the instapot for bone broth and beens
Recommending Thrive Market too. No hour one way drive, no hauling in/out of car & sales are great..😊
Cody what about a fish tank heater for cows water.
I was going to suggest old crockpots to heat the water for the ducks and chickens
Pray for every situation!!😊🙏🙏
love that chopper! Granted I don't usually have time to cook, but helps motivate me to cook more.
Wow, beef sticks in the stocking for the win! What a terrific idea. I’m always looking for things to put in my grandkids stockings that are not candy. Heck, my kids would’ve loved this when they were little lol

Guys, you should have a schedule that should be followed every year to prepare for the future season
If your pellet stove vent pipe gets hot with use, you can change it out to duravent double wall vent pipe. Never gets hot.
I love my base board heaters lol.
That bread looked so beautiful at 20:00

Thanks for the recommendation!
