Torturing kites in a very strong wind

- My 2,076th kite video. Sometimes the urge to fly kites is stronger than the desire to avoid getting blown away by over-strong winds. The kites might not be so happy, however! We have a lot of days when conditions are like this, but I am usually more kind to my kites and avoid forcing them to fly.
Anyone wanting to check out all my "How to..." videos on various aspects of kite-flying can now find them all easily on my Playlist at / jimskitesnz .
Launching kites with one hand in such strong winds while filming with the other hand requires skill. What a challenging day. You did well in trying to beat the strong winds. An interesting day for armchair kit flyers like me.
I've got quite used to flying with one hand and filming with the other, but it's not easy when the wind is so strong. Conditions were not good, but it was better than staying at home all day!
Wow nice video Jim. That was some wind. Too much for us amateurs. Good luck with the tail. Thanks Jim!
We're all amateurs, Dewey - there's no money in flying kites, or rather there is, but it's all going out, not coming in.
A dedicated kite flier indeed! Love the high wind stuff. I have had similar experiences with my Bora Bora 7. Two other high wind kites.... PFK Nighthawk and the small Stowaway delta (with a very long tail) also perform well in winds over 40 mph.
Yes, Jim, the Bora 7 is a dependable kite in high winds, one of very few kites from Prism that I like. The Stowaway Delta needs a good tail in any wind, I find. The Nighthawk is built for kite-fishing, of course, and built tough to suit, but I've never added one to my collection. I hope your snow has gone and you can resume flying.
@@JimNichollsthe delta needs no tail and is pretty stable.
This panflute kite will be in my recommendations for sure!
Unfortunately it's not currently in production.
Gee, that looked blustery! Surprised that some flew alright
Small parafoils can be great in such winds, Evan, but not all of them are as good as the ones that I flew.
The drogue on the parafoil 10 looks goofy but I've found it stabilizes the kite better than a fuzzy tail.
I didn't have good results with mine, and as you say, it looks goofy so I changed it anyway. It's a well-made kite, of course, and has quite a pull in a wind like this.
Probably a parafoil with a larger flowtail providing more drag would be really stable in those sort of conditions! :)
No kite is going to be totally stable in a gusty wind, that's not possible, but I was quite pleased with the way the parafoils behaved. The Trilobite and Frog have previously flown well in wind at least as strong as that, maybe more, but that was steadier and the kites were actually used as lifters for some sizeable line laundry. Their behaviour this time was quite different.
Great flying in those strong winds Jim. The panflute will fly in even stronger breezes. It stays steady as well. Great design!
Nigel, I only ever acquired the Pan Flute because I was making videos for Into The Wind a few years ago and they sent it to me for filming. I kept it for very occasional flying, usually in light winds, but it has certainly joined my high-wind stable now - it's a great little kite for sure. I hope all's well with you.
Sorry you had a day with wind like that. However, it’s great to see that I’m not the only one who has them!
We have many days like that, but I don't usually fly then. Unfortunately, our weather has become a lot less kite-friendly in the last couple of years.
Is there a word for a wind that is perfect for kite flying, perfectly steady but with reasonable strength? Plenty of words for the wrong types of wind that seem to haunt the days I manage to get out. Hopefully 2024 will be kind to us…
I certainly hope that this year will be better than the last one, but I'm not betting on it!
It looks as though the aft shroud lines on the ITW P-10 need an adjustment or a tiny bit shortening up!
Yes. As I think you know, Dano, there is an adjustable bridle on that kite, and I think I remember that I did adjust it after I'd finished filming, and there was some improvement.. The Parafoil 10 is a good kite. I hope all's well with you.
Not a good day for kites for sure...but thank you for your hard efforts...
You're welcome, Craig. I probably won't make a habit of it!
Hello Jim. In my native town (Boulogne sur mer) we often have this sort of wind ....😫
We often have these conditions too, Laetitia, but I'm not usually tempted to fly in them. On this occasion I just felt the need to get out.
WOW Jim 40 MPH is very high for you guys isn't it. The kites did pretty good for that but bet it is going to be hard to clean out your car. Ron
My car is always full of stuff, Ron, so I had to clear everything out and then vacuum the sand out. I'll be more careful next time!
Hope this is not a sign of winds to come. I will have a look for my Multi pocket sled just incase.
The forecast is not looking great at the moment, Carl, but it's the weather that counts, not the forecast, so we'll keep hoping for good conditions for your visit.
Today; your kites were more like jumping jacks. When they weren't; they were all over the place. The kites were letting you know; they have a mind of their own. ha,ha (you just thought it was the wind.)
Kites certainly have their own personalities, Jim, and I think some of them were rather unhappy on that day.
Hello sir, the wind is strong, the kite is flying sir
Yes, very strong wind, Vikram. It is often like that here.
Very strange wind
Yes, it was, Jiang. Enjoy your day off!
@@JimNichollsJust got txt from relif driver. He can work Thursday for me this week.
Kamikitezy kites.
You'll be pleased to know that, apart from a little fraying, no kites were harmed in this video, Glenn.
@@JimNicholls Reminds me of the Kamikaze pilot who flew 25 missions. LOL.
And got a medal for bravery, I assume, Glenn?
that poor trilobite😥
but also this is hilarious 🤣
No Trilobite was harmed in the making of this video, and who knows, it may even have enjoyed the exercise!
phew😌
Yikes!
It was fun, Tim, they enjoyed it, honestly!
