I too feel sorry for the Nostalgia Critic. Here was a man who was wildly successful in the early stages of his career, and when he simply tried to take what he thought would be the next logical step in his creative career, he was mercilessly crushed by reality, leaving him unable to become anything more than the Nostalgia Critic.
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. TeamFourStar was doing great until they started doing reviews, gaming, lets plays, etc then stopped doing DBZA as a result. If you have a talent for doing something effing do it…

They are amazing character to laugh and enjoy watching their videos alot even their epic battle crossover.
I stopped really liking him when he made an ass of himself about Ghostbusters (that at least WAS a Ghostbusters film and not a glorified Stranger Things ripoff).
That said, I’ll at least give him credit that he respected that it’s not a terrible thing to have a Star Wars trilogy for the youth of today, that’s WAY more than I can say about Doug!

As someone who still watches the Nostalgia Critic (and even then, I'm starting to get sick of his reviews too), this overview of Doug Walker and his website is very well articulated. It's primarily factual with only minor instances of subjective criticism from Mat here. Also, I have to appreciate him keeping the video as short as he did, it could not have been easy. But he pulled it off.

I watched him until this year, the dickishness of both him bashing Dark Knight Rises for the bajillionth time (sorry, that was the last film to get Batman’s heroic nature right) and The Star Wars sequels as “bad fan fiction” in his Batman vs. the Ninja Turtles review really angered me, because I have little tolerance for gatekeeping fanboys, and that showed how willing his is to cater to toxic fandoms.

I still watch his content to this very day. They're not as impactful as his past videos, but they do have moments of brilliance.

And the 'timeless' message, that you claim to fight so hard for, becomes just another passing trend to forget about."*
-And in his _Ghostbusters 2016_ review, he accurately satirizes both sides of the fandom, and makes a bold statement by saying , *"You can still believe in equal rights, and think this movie sucks; you can still be a fan of the original **_Ghostbusters_** , and think this one is great. By God, you can have such a wide variety that you might even consider yourself to be A UNIQUE HUMAN BEING!"*
I do wish him all the best despite what happened.
Whilst I only really watch him once in a while (mostly out of nostalgia ironically enough) I must admit those moments did make me smile. It shows that Doug does some have some modicum of passion and knowledge. Either that or it’s evidence of “a broken clock is still right twice a day.” Either way, I think Doug has that potential of being a good critic and give a good argument for his views. Whether or not he succeeds is entirely up to the viewer. I’m just saying. I’m glad I still have those memories of being a fan when I was younger.
I just hope he learns his lesson and actually improves himself.
(He probably won't, but I have a microscopic bit of hope in him.)

Doug Walker's vlogs for Avatar, Adventure Time, and other shows and films served as the model for my Powerpuff Girls and Hey Arnold! Vlogs. I enjoyed making them and getting to these shows for the first time.
I can see why he doesn't do them though as they are rather time-consuming.

Honestly, that was one of the main reasons I stuck by the dude for so long. You can tell that he wants to be open to the changes in the world of entertainment, and that includes animation. So it's cool to see him check out cartoons that were after his time. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that his "Are Kid Shows Better Now Than Ever" video was one of many to stop being so closed minded about animation, and start appreciating the shows we have now. And he's still doing it! He created a series about looking at dark episodes of cartoons including shows he didn't grow up with like Courage the Cowardly Dog. He's doing TV shows for Disneycember now (and I can't tell you how happy I was about him loving Phineas and Ferb). And he even had a video dedicated to Toonami where he has his younger colleagues do a retrospective on the shows THEY grew up with, even poking fun at his misguided Sailor Moon review:

@@kylemorello4787 In that video, he only mentioned the Looney Tunes shorts and the animated shows from the 80's and 90's he grew up with like Animaniacs, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Batman animated series from 1992 and Transformers compared to Adventure Time, Steven Universe and Gravity Falls. I'm shocked he never mentioned Hanna-Barbera in that video because that was the company that made actual classic animated tv shows before since Looney Tunes was just a series of short animated movies known as the Warner Bros. Cartoons because they/we didn't have television yet until the 50's. Classic animated shows they made like The Flintstones, Yogi Bear, Scooby-Doo and The Jetsons. I would know he wasn't a Hanna-Barbera fan and called their cartoons boring and cheap which is not even true. They are simple and straightforward and let's not forget Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera who owned the studio made Tom and Jerry already for MGM before shutting down the cartoon studio in the 50's. As someone like Doug who loves Tom and Jerry, this is coming out as harsh since he grew up in the 80's and 90's and wasn't a Cartoon Network kid. They made Tom and Jerry first and it was for a major Hollywood studio with big money. He would know Hanna-Barbera's shows made it huge. Same with Fat Albert and Rocky and Bullwinkle before Animaniacs, TMNT and Ren and Stimpy. He bashed the live-action movie of The Flintstones and even bashed the tv show itself the movie was based on while reviewing it. Well Doug u love The Simpsons more so that's why u hated it. U weren't even a Cartoon Network kid like me so if u don't like it, leave now. Also him mentioning cartoons based on a toyline made to sell more toys. Seriously Doug? Ninja Turtles is what u love and that show was selling toys too. Even though Ninja Turtles started out as a freaking comic book in 1984, not a toyline.

@@kylemorello4787 He was in college when Courage came around. I watched Courage when I was a kid. I can review it better than him. And he reviewed The Powerpuff Girls movie and compared the show 2 Ren and Stimpy when it is not. It felt like Rocky and Bullwinkle and Hanna-Barbera just like Dexter's Lab and both shows were Hanna-Barbera already.

Even ignoring the politics, Mr. Enter is just a poor reviewer. In the majority of his videos, his criticisms boil down to taking the target out of context and generally not doing enough research, resulting in a lot of misinformation being delivered to the viewer. In addition, he rambles on for too long about a subject or two here and there, and the amount of repetition is unbearable.
Even in his reviews, he'll go on political tangents more frequently than necessary. Not only does it serve little to no purpose within the reviews, it also makes them come off as unfocused. In short, his content is disjointed at best, and unsalvageable at worst. D Minus.

I personally don't see how he's a failure. Yea sure he's not as successful but he made a career for himself and at one point was a decent reviewer. Just like everything life changes
@@ChrisControversial His content and criticism aren’t as good as they used to be hence reviews like the wall and his content is stagnant and just awful and dull to watch. he’s still getting by but honestly there’s no reason for him to keep on reviewing.
He also used to be less of an asshole fanboy and more supportive of progressive media, his pivot away from that to a “lol, everyone sucks” mentality is why I stopped watching him.
He has his moments unfortunately nowadays but he isn't a evil or horrible person tho.
Ditto, man. And yet, I have to feel a little sorry for him. Despite everything, he wasn't some criminal mastermind; just a relatively normal guy who wanted to be as good with comedy as any classic Looney Tunes short. Back in his prime, he was a champion of that format; but today, he's both a hack and a laughingstock.
Personally, I pin much of this on Doug and Rob being influenced by those like Michaud, Antwiler and that one guy whose handle was JewWario.
Yeah, the latter may not have been mentioned in this retrospective look into Doug's past, but he and Antwiler weren't angels either. From what I gathered, they were part of that sexual harassments charge.
One of the few good things to come out of it was that many of his former partners did get bigger and better without being so misguided. Lovhaug in particular has lately been on a roll, even getting a movie of his own that ain't half bad.
Well done. I still like Doug and the Nostalgia Critic but yeah some of the backlash I can understand and trust me as a long-time fan of the series, I know his strengths and weaknesses and when it came to the #changethechannel era and the "review" that was The Wall, it goes to show that the Nostalgia Critic must remember it so we don't have to.

Well, truth be told, the Nostalgia Critic's videos left a very helpful impact on me. His videos helped teach me about what makes a story good and what makes a story bad. He taught me how to make a story and how not to make a story. He even taught me about how to criticize my story writing as well through his Nostalgia Critic videos. Doug Walker helped me become a fantasy novelist and I've even got 2 of 5 of my fantasy novels published and the second book of my series even got a 4/4 star review from a professional book reviewer. Currently, I'm working on Book 4 of 5, while I'm still waiting for Book 3 to get professionally edited before I publish it (it may take a while still though). My fantasy novels are about a girl with autism that gets kidnapped into a magical fantasy dimension where she becomes the heroine of the foreign world in order for her to be let back into her universe again. The first book is titled 'Reflection: The Uishanole' and the second one is called 'Reflection: The Vinston Scepter'. My goal is to have my fantasy novels turned into the greatest animated Disney movies ever (preferably in traditional 2D hand-drawn animation). Also, if these get made into Disney movies, then the main character named Phoebe, the girl with autism, will be the very first Disney princess with autism and her nationality is Canada. Nice. Doug's given me inspiration on what I could do as well. Although I take more influence from people like Linkara and Tony Goldmark out of better trust and more credibility (Even inspired me to write my own comic script).

As I’m still a fan of the Nostalgia Critic, I found this video to be informative of what a internet celebrity can go through during their careers with their ups and downs.

Reviewing content based on anger just doesn't sell anymore, it used to when the videos had to be short and there wasn't much of an audience, but times have changed and Doug Walker absolutely knows that, the Demo Reel and the reviews past that were his attempts to spice up this dying genre in a way where it could also be his outlet for creativity, problem is Doug didn't internalize any film-making techniques and he can't write outside of a Yakko Warner/Groucho Marx-type of character in a equally wacky world, the former crew moved on, Doug was left behind.
True. In the early days of TH-cam in the late 00s, the videos were mostly done by amateurs, and since internet entertainment was still a rather new thing in general, people were more easily entertained by it. So back then you could be successful with video that were cheaply produced and simple, but had good content. But times have changed, and today, a whole professional industry has become of what once started as small amateur productions, and many TH-cam series have budgets that aren't much below the budgets of better TV shows, and it shows in increasingly good production values. But Doug has so much failed at making his shows look more professional, the green screen effects in his videos still look cheap and lazy and haven't evolved since around 2009.
The thing is, while you can say something similar with James rolfe, he's still doing very well doing that.
I half agree, half disagree, well, actually I agree, but with a big exception. Generally I completely agree because I believe that even a bad movie deserves respect for the people that made it, specially when there's effort and passion behind it, and being "bad" is just lack of experience by the filmmakers or just taste of the reviewer. I've seen some TH-camrs that are dead serious with their hate and contempt for the movies, to the point that they are annoying, rude and whenever they say "this sucks" it can't be taken seriously. Some of them are Your Movie Sucks, I Hate Everything, Krystoff Raczinski and to a lesser degree, Schaffrillas Productions.
However I've never found Doug to be on that league, since he's a comedian, and as that I never felt that his jokes on the films are to be taken seriously. He makes fun even of his favorite movies and I think that's very valid. At the end of every NC, he tells a summary where I think the real review stands in, which he's usually a more tame and objective, no matter how "angry" he seemed in the review. In other of his shows like DIsnyecember, he is not in character and thus you can see a more serious reviewer. I think that's the main reason between those I mentioned and DW.
And the same applies to Cinema Sins, as I've never felt they're even real reviewers, they just purposely nitpick movies for jokes, but if they say "Action hero defies gravity *DING*" I mean, that's just a joke on movie magic ilogic, but doesn't mean they think the movie is bad just for tiny things like that, and yet, there's always someone in the comments taking those seriously.
id like to argue Doug doesnt do much of the whole Yelling and screaming at the camera shit like he use to back in the day.
It shows that he has evolved. He's not exactly doing the same content he did way back in the day. He's a lot more informative and even pokes fun at more movies he legit likes or at least finds them good.
Personally, I'm glad that I still watch his videos despite some of the hiccups he had along the way. As for the "Change the Channel" stuff, I found much of the accusations to be hypocritical considering some of the shady and/or disingenuous things some of the accusers have done, themselves. I do not wish to dwell on that any further, however.

I've sort of grown tired of watching Doug do the whole "angry reviewer" phase since everyone does it nowadays and he's just not as funny. I find that I like his reviews of films he actually enjoys more because they come from a place of sincerity and excitement, not annoyance and disappointment.
The only "angry reviewer" I watch anymore is James Rolfe. I like to think he was actually the first of the angry reviewers, at least for games, and still does other stuff like Monster Madness and Board James where he's more mellow.
His Dark Toons segments are pretty fun as he goes into the nuts and bolts of animation and how it works

It was hard for me to forsake him and Rob, because I’ve met them a couple of times at cons and they were very courteous to me and enjoyed my cosplays, but I can’t condone the type of fandom they ended up representing in recent years.

I can’t easily forgive stuff like them stating that the only people who still like the Star Wars sequels “aren’t real fans” or them backtracking on criticizing the MCU’s handling of Black Widow, because the former series was comforting to me and the latter just aggravated my chronic battles with depression.
I feel for him. He experienced hard grief when his Mother passed away in 2016. His stress from it caused him to go bald, and the 2018 ChangeTheChannel controversy seemed like a petty disgruntled employee revolt against him even though he was the WRONG target. Doug is a very humble man and down to earth. He does NC now as his way of making a living. I wish him well.

Now yes you had the piggybackers who came out of the woodwork who always wanted Channel Awesome to die and saw a chance to kill the beast but well The Simple truth is anybody who had moved on was getting their revenue from elsewhere. Essentially Channel Awesome finally reflected the truth The only ones that matter are Doug and Co... Even with Three contributors Doug dominates the site.

animat, i watched your stuff all the time growing up, as well as doug’s. i was obsessed with your content, as well as his content, for a good period of time while i was in late elementary school and throughout middle school because i’ve always had a particular passion for film and film criticism.
years have passed, and i’m 17 now - almost 18. i’m planning to minor in film and i write reviews often, and i hope to expand more with film as a whole. doug’s legacy took a heavy toll on me - while i hadn’t watched the nostalgia critic in years, it was absolutely shattering to see someone i grew up with become something of a modern, internet greek tragedy.
but, as for you, i need to thank you for how much your work has inspired me ever since i was a kid. this was the first video of your’s that i’ve seen in YEARS, and i couldn’t help but have the biggest smile on my face, mainly because i realized that you’ve just always been great. your content is just phenomenal, and it’s nice to see that you’re still making amazing videos - and i’m really excited to tune into more in the future.
you’re definitely one of the inspirations and motivators as to why i’ve always been so passionate about pursuing film, and - once more - thank you for everything. :)
Doug did actually talked about the controversy with Double Toasted. While he didn't say much, he said that the site had gotten too big which resulted in the poor communications. But nowadays they're trying their best to keep things simple, under control, and enjoyable for the crew.
It got overcrowded, definitely, and showed how much of a house of cards it really was, but I’m glad he’s got a few others working with him that can see things he doesn’t.
Mr. Enter's PSA video made me realize how politically, sociologically, and medically illiterate he is. His arguments on masks are just assertions.
I thought he was just frustrated that some governments may not have considered the negative impact such regulations can have on people, specifically children. He does make a few fair points that many don't talk about.

In the end, Doug Walker really did turn into Daffy Duck. People started getting tired of his schtick and barely anything can go right for him.
Yeah, I stopped watching Mr. Enter. At first he was funny, but then after a while, his ranting got old.

I'm in the exact same boat as you. I was a big fan of the Nostalgia Critic for years, even if I did notice a considerable decline in quality later on. Then in 2018 the Change The Channel controversy happened and I jumped off. To this day I haven't watched a single Nostalgia Critic video at all, and may never go back period.

Very interesting video! I never realised how much of a disaster Demo Reel was, i just thought it wasn't very good.
I'm still a fan of NC and enjoy his stuff. I like the creativity and the cast of characters. His Cats review was very good.
People can complain about him still just doing reviews, but so do most CA alumni. He seems to enjoy doing them, which comes across in the videos and, if someone enjoys what they do then fair enough.
Wow, this hit in the feels by the end. I started watching the Nostalgia Critic when I was in high school, I'm 30 now. How I was introduced was during the sleepovers I'd have with my friends during high school, my dad set it up so that I could view things on his laptop on the TV which I thought was the coolest thing at the time, watching youtube on TV? Wow! So whenever I was host, we'd take turns pulling up various videos from youtube to watch & this one friend always wanted to play Aladdin & the Cave of Cheeseburgers but we saw it enough times so she changed to playing different Nostalgia Critic videos. Watching this reminded me of everything from over the years, experiencing all of this from a fan's viewpoint in real time. I'm still friends with that group to this day, we were tight in high school, not so much now as adults but we still try our best to stay in contact & whenever we're not catching up on what's been going on in our lives, we'd talk about the Nostalgia Critic's latest episodes but it's been so long since we've talked about it because obvious reasons. Actually, the friend who introduced us all to NC is fighting cancer, sounds like she's doing a lot better but we were very scared for her. Makes anything relating to NC more heavy, when I think of a lot of his older work, I'm reminded of when that friend brought up certain videos during the sleepovers. Life sucks & it's sad that Doug Walker got trapped having to be the Nostalgia Critic but if he played a negative role in everything then maybe it's a form of hell he must endure.
In my opinion I don't think it's just the Nostalgia Critic that's not the same anymore, it's also the internet itself.
The internet has become a much different place since the first Nostalgia Critic videos were ever made. His style of reviews just don't hold up like what they use to in this modern era of the internet.
Even people like James Rolfe (A.K.A The Angry Video Game Nerd) have tried newer styles of reviewing to fit in with what most of the modern reviewers are doing.

I remember that back in 2015, his Jurassic World review already pissed off a large number of people, do to giving idiotic critizisms that are blatantly false, and overall just being obnoxious. That was the first time I Saw a large number of people not liking the Nostalgia Critic

I definitely have mixed feelings about Doug, Channel Awesome, and what happened to the reviewers, and although I don't agree with what happened, I still enjoy Doug's content, so I don't know how all to feel about it. With that said, I feel like "The Review Must Go On" was one of Doug's strongest pieces of content and felt the most genuine.

I grew up on Nostalgia Critic. I still remember the first video I watched of it, “Old vs New: Spider Man”. Since then, Nostalgia Critic was a major part of my life. Even though I was born in 2001, I grew up watching mostly kids movies from the 80s and 90s, so seeing his reviews still helped me feel nostalgic. I watched his videos every Wednesday. I wanted so badly to visit the office that the videos were shot in. Many of the review channels that I watch and are subscribed to were originally recommended to me because of how much I watched his videos. I remember how giddy I was when he mentioned My Little Pony (my favorite show at the time) in one of his videos (the one about how good kids cartoons are nowadays). My standards for what make good movies were largely thanks to his reviews, and my interest in filmmaking at least partially is thanks to his videos. Learning about what all he did just filled me with so much dread.
Also, with your comment about Mr Enter, there was a time I would’ve defended him, but I can’t in good conscience. His videos about politics are so heavily misinformed, and it’s clear that he doesn’t understand politics at all.
Usually I would watch the nostalgia critic if he does an editorial (like 2d vs 3D animation), reviews something bad, or reviews something that I’m familiar with or have seen before.
I’m still watching him to this day. He is very important to me as an aspiring Actor/Filmmaker and I will defend to the day I’ll die

I never really got the whole “change the channel” thing. While the drama was interesting to watch unfold I couldn’t really make myself care. Both sides had some seriously unsavory characters and call me a cynic but even as a kid the idea that Channel Awesome was just “a bunch of friends who made videos together” seemed pretty unrealistic. So when the whole CTC thing came out I was pretty unfazed and didn’t really get why people freaked out.
You know now that you've done Doug Walker, you've got to do James Rolfe because if your gonna do a history of the Critic you got to do the nerd.
The Not So Awesome document kind of reminds me of the Disney War book by James B Stewart. Like the document, it reveals a history of Michael Eisner's leadership and how it went down in flames in the early and mid-2000s and revealing the dark truth of the management of the Disney Company from Michael Eisner's leadership, to Jeffery Katzenberg being in charge of Disney Animation, to Roy E Disney resigning the company in late 2003, and Roy calling out Eisner for destroying the company in the 2000s. The book shattered the reputation of the Walt Disney Company even further.

Lindsay Ellis has always been funnier and a much better critic than Doug Walker could ever hope to be, and now an acclaimed author. I heavily disagree with her politically when it comes to racism, feminism, etc, but she's honestly the best critic on the internet by her analysis talents alone. She graduated from 2 of the best film schools in the world. That should give you an understanding on why she's so damn good.

They were romantically involved the first 3 years of CA, she often wouldn't upload content for weeks on in, often breaching her contract intentionally middle fingering Mike Michaud. Ellis and Doug would often see each other whenever she was in Chicago. They split in Early 2011 because Michaud kept complaining about her and was TERRIFIED of Fraternization. Ellis and Walker STILL Remained friends, and Lindsay STAYED with Channel Awesome ALL the Way until March 2015 leaving on HER own terms. Keep it mind, Lupa and her Lackey's didn't leave CA until Blip TV shut down in August of 2014. They were ALL let go from their contracts and fired by Michaud.

Lindsay is also STILL Friends with the Walkers and STILL talks to Brad Jones and his Family. She flew to Chicago in September 2016 to console Doug and attend his Mother's Funeral.
I still watch the NC despite all the controversy that went on. He's still got some decent content, he has evolved as he doesn't do one long synopsis of movies while pointing out it's flaws for comedy anymore. He still reviews movies, but does more analyzing of them rather than tearing them apart while screaming profanity at the screen.... His style nowadays is similar to what Lindsey Ellis used to do in her reviews. I do notice that he doesn't do a whole lot of skits anymore, but that may have something to do with current events. I'll admit it is refreshing to see him analyze the movies he reviews rather than nitpick them. He has improved slightly, and I hope he continues to improve his art as time goes by.

@David Foerster First of, Animatt is way better at reviewing animated movies good or bad, Doug on the other hand is not really that good and intelligent to research the film deeply (hints: Lion King 1994 and there was nothing wrong with Hakuna Matata and I never like him when I first watched him review Space Jam) and he repeats what he already talked about before. The AVGN is way better than him and that guy I can laugh too much at, more then that narcissist Nostaglia Critic who abused his workers and staffs.

Honestly, even though I still subscribe and watch the Nostalgia Critic, I don't know what to say about all this. Nostalgia Critic, Mr. Enter, PieGuyRulz and of course, You Animat, are some of my biggest inspirations to help me write better stories for my animations and try to do some experimentations for me works. Before, I just like to do random types of animations, regardless if the stories made sense or not just for the sake of random fun. And while I still tend to lean towards randomous and comedy, I do try add in some structure to them. They may not always land the way I wanted them to be but at least I try and the results often come with varying results.
I'm just wonder whether or not Animat will do a similar video to either Mr Enter or Cosmodore. Compared to those two, Doug is actually a lot nicer. His angry reviews in the past were mainly just for the sake of comedy and I'm actually glad that he doesn't always rely on negative reviews and does occasionally do something positive like his Dark Toons series. Mr. Enter use to do the same with Admirable Animations (which was one of the reasons why I subscribed to him in the first place) but later, he decided to make Soul his finale for Admiral Animations and decided to focus more on Atrocities, his Growing Around Project (either as an animation or as a graphic novel) and occasionally top 10s. Doug at the very least tries to think about not just himself but everyone else involved in Channel Awesome. Mr Enter kinda treated some of his employees badly. One of his former editors, StarGiantProductions said she was treated badly when working for Enter, especially on his Nick-o-Rama reviews. While I still have fond memories of watching Mr. Enter's older works and often revisit them, I rarely revisit his new ones because I just don't know what to say about him with his political views, his way on reviewing some animations, his treatment to some of his empolyees, etc. In fact, I often revisit Doug's new stuff more. Nevertheless, I still subscribe to Enter only to hear what stupid thing he has to say, regardless if his reviews are good or not.
Do I even have to say about what happened with Cosmodore? It was bad enough when Animat at one point gave him a guest appearance in Animat's Crazy Cartoon Cast.

I feel mr enter wants to move on from his involvement with cosmodore, and he’s often mentioned Mr. Enter in his “crazy cartoon cast”.
He’ll probably do an editorial on Enter, but there’s something to be said for waiting ‘til the storm clears.
Not to mention there’s other things like Mr. Coat and all that came with it that he could do.
Although maybe some things are best left in the past.

This was not quite fair take on Cinematic Venom.
But aside from that, the video was better than I expected. Mat has finally acknowledged that Change the Channel movement isn't "going strong" - it collapsed in infighting long ago and lost its impact way before that, because people took it as just another recent trend and moved on after two weeks to never give it a thought again. I guess Mat really does do an extensive research for each of his documentaries. Great, that gives his channel a bigger long-term value.
All this is and will be a sad story though...

I'm actually kind of amazed that so many of the better known Channel Awesome contributors are still going & that there are still more people getting into the same sort of video reviews. I would do it myself, if I had the energy to deal with TH-cam. That being said, at this point, there isn't a lot left to be said which hasn't already been said about most movies people have heard of. And I'd need to invest in, at least, a much better capture card.

I’ve heard about the situation of Channel Awesome but I didn’t get the full story. Watching this video made it easy to understand the full story and situation of Channel Awesome.
I kid you knot when I say this during times where I felt like literally shit and was depressed on and felt like an outcast in life when I was beginning high school I first found NC cause of the food fight trend and ever since his videos always got me through rough times and I even met him back in 2018 at a convention and told him that dude was also chill and I’m glad I got to talk to him, I never cared about the controversy and all the pointless crud that people say he’s still grinding for his art and even tho people may not see him a success he’s still busting ass for his art and I deeply respect it
It’s ironic. He’s the embodiment of the tragedy of the line “Stick to what you’re good at.” Yes, he does make a comfortable living, but he’s essentially frozen in time, trapped as the Nostalgia Critic. There’s no climbing the ranks, no eventual big break. A man who dreamed to create denied the chance to ever do so, cursed to review the works of others. A living fossil in the current era of TH-cam.
Funny enough I've been watching Animat for about 10 years now, even longer than Nostalgia Critic! I think something you and Doug have in common (in a good way) y'all are both great at writing video essays! I feel like I've learned so much from both of you! (Despite Channel Awesome's fall from grace)

I didn't follow Nostalgia Critic videos until more recent years. I would just watch a few here and there when I wanted some laughs. I wasn't around for all the changes and controversy. It seems to me that most people have moved on one way or the other. Since I'm not a part of the that community, I don't have strong feelings about it. I respect that Doug's an adult and should be treated the way I'd want to be treated if I were in his situation. I look at Doug and his family/cohorts as seemingly nice, talented people. I still watch Nostalgia Critic every week. I've seen a good chunk of his body of work. He's a real movie buff and knows some stuff about film. Sometimes I learn something about film from his reviews of recent years. Sometimes the humor is hit or miss. I can tell when he's having a good week and when he's struggling to find those knee slappers. I disagree with the video's conclusion that Doug's situation is kind of a sad one. He's still making content and seems content and grateful to be doing it. As for losing influence, that comes and goes with the times. Times have changed, Doug's evolved and Nostalgia Critic still pulls in a crowd on TH-cam with its billions of videos. That's no small feat.
I started following him I think in 2020 when I came across his GI Joe Movie review and I just watch his videos and more recently Disneycember but I do feel he has somewhat changed since the upload of this video. For one he now reviewing more mainstream stuff like Diary Of A Wimpy Kid and Spiderman No Way Home. He also gives positives about the films which was lacking in his older reviews which I have watched some of them.

I know Doug isn't what he used to be, but I'd say he still has a lot of potential. His Dark Toons series has a lot of educational and artistic value to it, and I'd say his reviews have improved a bit from the Wall travesty (at least from what I can tell).

Walter Banaziak, a part of the main team, has done some great work, from what I’ve heard.
I've been watching NC since about 2015 when i was like 12. And honestly doug has greatly shaped and inspired me, as stupid as that sounds. Even after all these years i keep coming back to his videos every single week even though growing up has made me realise some of his reviews and decicions really do suck. it's a strange mix of genuine and ironic enjoyment but even after all these years i still consider myself a Nostalgia Critic fan.
Feel free to keep watching, but I don’t really like him anymore.

I’ve been resentful of online reviews lately, mainly for their use of profanity directed at their audience, whether for jokes or not.
To sum up how I (or we all) feel about nostalgia critic, the entirety of Rät by Penelope Scott is the perfect song.
If you want my perspective, I think Doug has done some pretty goofy and embarrassing things over the years that deserve ridicule, but the claim that his colleagues went on to greater pastures is BS. With a few exceptions, Doug actually turned out to be miles better than the other contributors. Spoony went nuts and stopped caring about his audience and his content. LordKat had an insane ego, as well as a complete meltdown over Spoony. Lindsay, while yes, went on to become a best selling author, also became anti-free speech and pro cancel culture, which ended up getting her cancelled by the audience she cultivated. MarzGurl became probably one of the most hated people in the anime community, hell just the commentary community in general, with her false-flagging content making fun of her. And perhaps most of all, Linkara is pretty much a lol cow, all the way down to having an awful web comic, complaining about ad block, doing smash the tax livestreams, and having a messed up past when it comes porn. He also can’t take criticism or a joke. Honestly, a multi-part video series could be dedicated to Linkara and his antics. Let’s not forget that when Brad Jones got SWATTed, or at least attempted to be SWATTed, Linkara pretty much laughed and mocked him and didn’t make it out to be a big deal, because he didn’t like Brad.
The Change the Channel document is also all over the place. There are some serious claims like literal sexual misconduct allegations, to stupid and pointless claims, like Doug being dumbass and not knowing how a Skype call works, or the company not taking a stance against GamerGate, which is funny. 😂
That intro stuck with me, I almost instantly left the video, thank you for doing this, I'm a big AVN and NC fan and I getcha :)

This was a masterfully edited and scripted video. Succinct without leaving out any critical information, objective enough to avoid the bias for/against specific critics usually present in people's responses to Doug's work, and touched upon Mr. Enter, the other major disappoint in the animation critique community.
I still don't get how his videos were loved back then, but they're laughed at now (a bad creator can still have good content).
Internet. Not being a prick, only the internet believes that people should be bashed and hated no matter what...until it's something they love or even themselves, then they will acknowledge that having that behaviour is dumb
I think it was cause of AVGN. Let's keep in mind that James Rolfe's character has been around since the mid-2000s. He became a role model for some on how to do reviews at the time. However i think the problem is that people forgot to realize that AVGN was a character played by a guy that had passion for monster movies. AVGN's whole persona is meant to be a satirical view on taking the flaws in video games seriously, but some people have viewed it as a real way to review things. That's why reviews from the 2010s in some cases are seen as someone trying to imitate that review style.
Because people were younger, and he tended to resort to a lot of shock humor in his early reviews that hasn't aged well.
Honestly, I still enjoy watching older Nostalgia Critic videos from time to time and still find the nostalgic commercials episodes funny. Also, while his "The Wall" review itself has become infamous I actually really like Sam Fennah's contribution to it, specifically the "The Trial" portion. I've become a fan of Fennah's Satellite City/August Few creatures and videos and am glad that review didn't seem to have negatively affected him. I appreciate your video here about the Nostalgia Critic and not being harsh like others.
Both Doug and James are great in their own ways and I still love both of them. I still love the Nostalgia Critic and it makes me sad how many people hate him now just because of his current videos being different with the skits and the #ChangetheChannel controversy. I still think his current reviews are great and really enjoyable. I appreciate you for making this video, Mat and not being one of those kinds of people who "expose" him or make videos on why he's terrible. I personally think you should watch some of his recent videos. You'll probably like them. Totally up to you. Just a suggestion.

In 2002, Blue Sky made a movie debut with Ice Age, it about Manny, a no-nonsense woolly mammoth; Sid, a loudmouthed ground sloth; and Diego, a sardonic saber-tooth tiger, who come across a human baby and work together to return it to its tribe. it was originally a traditionally animated movie with an action-oriented comedy-drama tone that was intended to be developed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman's Fox Animation Studios, but them Fox Animation head Chris Meledandri(who them became former and CEO of Illumination) and executive producer Steve Bannerman approached Forte with the proposition of developing the film as a computer-animated movie. Story development began in spring of 1999, and official production on the film began in June 2000, one week after the closure of Fox Animation Studios. For research, the film's development team took several trips to the Museum of Natural History early on in production in order to make sure that the film authentically felt like the Ice Age. Ultimately, the team translated the information that they had compiled in their research by stylizing it in order to fit with the film's story. A team of 32 animators went out and did research to figure out the movements of different animals; for instance, for the movement of Scrat, animators visited a park and observed local squirrels, taking note of their "twitchy" way of moving. originally, Diego died near the end of the film. However, it was reported that kids in the test audience burst into tears when his death was shown. Leary himself warned the producers that something like this would happen. When it was proven true, the scene was re-written to ensure Diego survived. The characters and environments in Ice Age were modeled and animated using WaveFront's Maya animation software. Rendering was completed using CGI Studio, an in-house ray tracing program being developed since Blue Sky's formation in 1987 and previously used for Wedge's 1998 short film, Bunny. James Earl Jones and Ving Rhames were considered for Manny, but they sounded too obvious and Wedge wanted more comedy, so Instead, the role was given to Ray Romano because they thought his voice sounded very elephant-like. Wedge described Romano's voice as deep and slow in delivery, but also with a "sarcastic wit behind it." when it came out in March 15, 2002, the critics praise the film for its story, animation, characters, humor, voice cast performances (especially those of Leguizamo and Leary) and heart, it was nominated at a Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature, but lose to Spirited Away and at the box-office it was a big success with over $383 million, and one more fact: Did you know that the Ice Age baby is called Roshan.
In 2005, they release Robots. It about a robot named Rodney Copperbottom who seeks out his idol at his company in Robot City, only to discover a plot by its new owner to cheat older robots into buying expensive upgrades. Initially, Chris Wedge and William Joyce had decided to make a film adaptation of Joyce's book, Santa Calls. After a failed animation test in 2000, Wedge and Joyce decided to develop an original story about a world of robots instead. In 2001, the duo pitched the concept to Chris Meledandri, as a visual idea. While not initially impressed, Meledandri agreed to greenlight the film, and served as the executive producer. The film began production in 2002, shortly after Ice Age was released. Wedge reunited with the crew from his first film, including Carlos Saldanha as the co-director. In June 2003, the film was announced by Fox at the Museum of Natural History’s IMAX theater. This announcement confirmed the entire cast(Like Ewan McGregor, Halle Berry, Greg Kinnear, Mel Brooks, Amanda Bynes, Drew Carey and Yes, Robin Williams, whem it came out in March 11, 2005, It grossed $260.7 million worldwide against a $75 million budget and received praise for its animation, humor and voice performances.
In 2011, Blue Sky was thinking of Making Musical, and that's why Rio was release. It about Blu, a domesticated male Spix's macaw who is taken to Rio de Janeiro to mate with a free-spirited female Spix's macaw, Jewel. The two eventually fall in love, and together they have to escape from being smuggled by Nigel, a cockatoo. Saldanha first had the idea for the film in 1995, involving a penguin being washed up on the beaches of Ipanema; it was changed to the current story after he learned of Happy Feet and Surf's Up (two other films involving penguins) being produced. He pitched the idea to Chris Wedge at Blue Sky in 2006. Saldanha showed the animators maps and books with geographic landmarks and measurements, from which they built a digital version of Rio. Later, a group of artists from the company visited Rio to see the various story locations. The animators also met with an expert on macaws at the Bronx Zoo to gain insight into their movement and personalities. Saldanha himself is a Brazilian from Rio de Janeiro; such elements of Brazilian culture and landmarks were also influenced from Saldanha growing up in Brazil. The lead voice actors were approached in 2009. Jemaine Clement was approached to do the film after seeing test shots of his character Nigel doing a speech from Flight of the Conchords, which was done prior to a script being finalized. Neil Patrick Harris was supposed to voice Blu, but had other commitments outside production; he was later replaced by Jesse Eisenberg. Eisenberg was asked during the filming of The Social Network if he would do his voice recording on the weekends, and he agreed after reading the script, saying: "It was the perfect antidote to get out of the mindset of my character in Social Network who was so severe, and in some ways so joyless." For music, they brought on board Sérgio Mendes to act as music guru and online living library. He in turn was able to reach out to artists such as will.i.am and Carlinhos Brown to provide music for the film. Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway, who voiced Jewel, had acted together before when both were still teenagers, when they played siblings in the short-lived 1999 TV show Get Real. Hathaway stated in an interview that she didn't see Eisenberg during production of Rio except "socially throughout the process," but that she was "very happy for all of his success." Rio premiered on March 22, 2011 in Lagoa, Rio de Janeiro, followed by its general release on April 15, 2011. The film received generally positive reviews from film critics, who praised the visuals, voice acting and music. The film was also a box office success, grossing over $143 million in the United States and $484 million worldwide. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song for the song "Real in Rio", but lost to the other nominee, "Man or Muppet" from The Muppets. the same year the movie came out, there was a game, starring the Angry Birds, called Angry Birds Rio, and was released in March 2011 for various mobile and desktop systems.
A year later, they release Ice Age: Continental Drift. The plot focuses on Scrat accidentally sending Manny, Sid, and Diego adrift on an iceberg with Sid's Granny and causing them to face a gang of pirates led by Captain Gutt. The first details of the sequel were announced on January 10, 2010, when The New York Times reported that Blue Sky was working on a fourth film and was in negotiations with the voice cast. Fox later confirmed on May 5, 2010, that Ice Age: Continental Drift would be released on July 13, 2012. As a promotion for Ice Age: Continental Drift, Fox released two 3-minute short segments from the film, titled Scrat's Continental Crack-up and Scrat's Continental Crack-up: Part 2. The first part premiered as a theatrical release attached to Gulliver's Travels in 2010, and later with Rio. It was also released on-line on January 6, 2011, on iTunes Movie Trailers. The second part was released on November 16, 2011, on iTunes, and debuted in theatres with Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. The first part shows how Scrat's actions lead to split of the continents, while in the second part, Scrat's underwater pursuit of acorns leads him to a pirate ship. it came out on July 13, 2012, as the first Ice Age film to be presented in the 2.40:1 aspect ratio. The film received mixed reviews and grossed $877 million worldwide, marking it the fifth highest-grossing film of 2012 and the highest-grossing animated film of 2012.
I used to watch som nostalgia critic back around 2014 with his foodfight review, but I still watch some of his content today, but they are not as good as they used to be since it feels a little more corporate this time due to the TH-cam sponsors. I feel very sorry for the channel awesome staff that were mistreated and harassed. The former staff hopefully would improve their videos into becoming big. Also one thing to mention, after the controversy he would be made fun of, and it got even more big thanks to Chris O’Neal Aka OneyNG.
Please make an AVGN video please. Your channel and this video is awesome. Damm what makes this more sad is the Doug doesn't see anything other life as an option. I guess the bitter sweet side of it all, is that he was never destined to be a big filmmaker as he thought he would. I not saying he doesn't have the talent, but Doug really needs some skills of modern filmmaking to make it big again.
