Great question, Peg! Many people (and industries) use these terms interchangeably. When it comes to gemstones, a synthetic is usually created to emulate the original properties and ‘chemical makeup of the stone as closely as possible. ‘Faux’ is an imitation made to resemble the original, but the composition is generally very different. It’s definitely a subtlety in terminology; an example would be a blue glass stone made to look like a sapphire (a ‘faux’ sapphire), compared to a synthetic lab created sapphire which retains the same makeup and hardness of a natural sapphire.
