  • The 3 row SUV market is getting shaken up by the all-new 2020 Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade. Kia brought their A game with the new Telluride, especially this Telluride SX Prestige trim. With so much hype surrounding the 2020 Telluride..is it truly worth all of the praise? Watch this full review with lots of detail and find out. Honestly, I believe it's worth a look and could certainly sway people away from the new redesigned 2020 Highlander and 2020 Explorer.

      I was about to come complain. But for everyone who doesn't read the comments they're not going to know. I wish reviews went into details. There are like 100 videos with the fluff that anyone can see without a review.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dorian Lust details on what specifically? You just did complain, not about. Reading an article or specs and seeing a picture is nowhere near as visceral or immersive as a video. Especially a 39 minute video showing just about anything. What you need is a 3 hour video of someone touching the trim pieces with each finger 20 times, taking the engine apart and putting it back together, detailing the country of origin for the carpet in the cargo area, how many watts the interior light bulbs are, the angle in which the headrest meets the seatback, and what it smells like from 20 peoples opinions. Or you can go to a Kia dealership and experience one for yourself.

    • @DorianLust
      @DorianLust 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@PrimeAutotainment well I was responding to the front vents. The suggestion about more details was a general comment about most videos. You certainly put more time into details than most. What I never seem to find are the more technical details.
      Good examples are showing how well the cruise works in stop and go traffic. That's a main feature I'm waiting for on 2020 vehicles. How effective is lane centering? How well can it hold a curve? Do the side cameras actually show the blind spot? Does the heads up display work, what options does it have, is it visible? I'd like to know more about AWD hardware, how it works, how it compares to other vehicles, videos of it starting in ECO, sport, Snow, and with the dif lock engaged in slow motion in sand or gravel. How well does it corner, especially compared to something like a Passport that has torque vectoring and over driving a tire instead of just breaking? It seems to have some nice service screens, but no one seems to show it or talk about them. What do you think of the app and remote features? How well do voice commands work?
      I think most reviews say it has these things, but the Kia and Hyundai websites list all that already. I think you should make the 5 minute overview, and 30 minute detailed review, but then you could make all sorts of detailed functional test videos of all the different features. People would find those interesting and something most reviewers don't do. I could be wrong. But after watching 4 hours of videos and knowing more than the sales person at the dealer, if other people are like me they are looking for something different than just the same thing that every other review is saying for like that 20th time.
      You did good by the way, if I had only watched your video it would have covered most things, but in the case of nerds like me I'd seen it all already and I'm still searching for more. Actually, you should probably ignore me and just keep up the good work, but there are some idea if you want them.

    You guys!
    I got a grey Telluride SX in April 2019, and took a cross-country road trip with wife and two young kids in June; our main draw was the panoramic moon roof for the kiddos to be able to see as much as possible while we were on the road, especially the stars at night;
    This was around the time a lot of the reviews were coming out and the hype was beginning, but I don't think they'd sold many just yet..
    Just about everywhere we stopped, as soon as we stepped out people would ask "what is THAT"
    Given this is the nicest thing I've ever owned, it was kind of cool to be turning heads for the right reasons (compared to my 1992 Honda Civic with a tendency to blow oil with any acceleration -RIP)
    The most common mistaken identities / comparisons for the Telluride were either a Range Rover or a BMW - not too shabby!
    As far as the performance and day-to-day usability and practicality, this thing is amazing. Gas mileage on the highway at speed, we were able to crack 28mpg for some stretches. Around town with lots of stop and go, it hovers around 18-20, but for a truck of its size and weight, I think this is still pretty darn good.
    The only oddity I've noticed now having driven around for ~8 months and 11k miles: the normal LED headlights (due to both their brightness and ride height) often get mistaken for high beams at night - so oncoming drivers frequently flash me as if to tell me to turn off the beams.. then I show them the actual beams! and they get the idea :-)
    Overall, this beauty 100% lives up to the hype, and by now has won SUV of the year in a competitive field - in addition to the old guard, my friend got a Hyundai Palisade which is also a first model year and pretty impressive truck - in my opinion were it not for the Telluride, the Palisade would have been up there for the top prize.. Subaru ascent not bad either.
    Great review! many thanks

    I have owned the Telluride SX Ebony Black with Butterscotch interior for over 2 months now. There are not many SX models on the road and they are extremely hard to find. The vehicle is packed with technology and lives up to the hype of the reviews. It is by far the best bang for the buck. I recommend purchasing any type of extended warranty that covers the electronics in this vehicle. I haven't had any issues but there are so many things that could potentially go wrong. The only gripe out of anything with this vehicle is the aggressiveness of the lane assist on city roads. When lanes merge, it can pull a bit. Honestly the lane assist is more of a highway function. Overall, I highly recommend this SUV. (non sponsored opinion)

    I’ve had my black SX with butterscotch interior for about 5 weeks and this is the nicest car I’ve ever had! Super comfy and spacious, fantastic on gas, and well worth the money for all the features. I was sooooo happy to trade my 2016 Explorer Sport for this! Never thought I’d be glad to drive a Kia but they did a damn good job on this.
    UPDATE 4-4-20: I’ve had this car for almost 10 months now and I still love it. I’ve got 15k miles on it and haven’t had any issues, just regular maintenance. I get all service done at my local Kia dealer and their customer service is fantastic. I haven’t had to deal with recalls either, which is nice because it seemed like my old Explorer had a new recall every other month.

    I also find the Telluride awesome, and after driving it, I find that even if it is heavy, handling around corners or when doing a U-turn is rather reassuring. I confirm that in Canada, we have mud, snow and sand modes. But on top of the wheel, there is no diff lock button but a "Drive/Terrain" inscription. Not sure what it does. That apart, I don't regret regarding this video because of the outro music alone. I love it!

    • @stephenhendricks103

      The Highlander was definitely long in the tooth and desperately in need of an upgrade. I suspect, though, unless you're interested in the hybrid version you may be disappointed. For 2020 it has 2.5" inches in length but it still offers a less accommodating third row than the KIA Sorento that's 7" shorter. In fact it has less passenger room than any of its rivals. The 2020 Highlander has a significantly updated interior but that's about it. If you're looking for a 3 row crossover, the Highlander still trails virtually all of the competition in terms of cargo and passenger accommodations. And if you don't need/want a third row there are numerous other choices with more room vehicles that range from 188" to 192" in length.

Love the suspension it adjusts to your drive. So comfy, love the front part of the driver seat it raises to adjust your comfort and takes fatigue from your legs, almost like a recliner. Huge step up from the evoque dynamic I traded in. I can tow and have more cargo space. Looking forward for the accessories such as the rear trunk cover. A couple of points about the Telluride and Palisade drawn from the excellent review and others' comments.
    () Styling. It's obvious that the Telluride and Palisade are nearly identical vehicles. The differences to the extent they exist is that the Palisade is closer to a pure "near luxury" vehicle while the Telluride, though just as fully featured in terms of almost all "luxury" features, projects a more "rugged" image.
    The reason for that difference is the markets for which each is designed. The Telluride is aimed exclusively at the North American market. It's built in West Point, Georgia and isn't even for sale in Asia (not even Korea) or Europe. Americans find "rugged" looks very appealing in the mainstream midsize 3 row category and the Telluride is designed to take advantage of that appeal. The Palisade is built in South Korea and aimed at a variety of international markets, specifically in Asia and Europe where pure "luxury" trumps "ruggedness" even if it's combined with luxury touches. That's not to say that the North American market isn't important to Hyundai but of equal or even greater importance is selling the Palisade in the Korean home market, in other Asian countries (especially in China), and in Europe where vehicles from BMW, Audi, MB, and Volvo are significant competitors. None of these markets has been a target of the Telluride's design.
    Personally, like many Americans, I find I prefer the boxy styling of the Telluride more appealing than the curvy and (to my eye) "fussier" styling of the Palisade. And while Hyundai seems to believe that diamond quilted upholstery is a sign of luxury, it reminds me of the sofa in my grandmother's living room of 50 years ago. The Telluride may feel less "luxurious," but to me it feels more modern. Further one of the minor but telling differences between the vehicles is the power folding third row seats in the Palisade compared to manual "push/pull" system in the Telluride. The Palisade's approach is clearly designed to convey a feeling of luxury. But it adds weight and takes up space compared to the Telluride. And it means the cargo space behind the third row is three cubic feet less in the Palisade than in the Telluride. It's a very small detail but it illustrates the Telluride's emphasis on functionality over a minor luxury feature.
    Of course, these are largely a matter of individual taste and many customers in North America will prefer the Palisade. Hyundai and KIA are masters at building different vehicles that share a wealth of similarities while appealing to somewhat different market sub-segments. The Telluride vs Palisade designs are only the most recent and most obvious examples.
    () Price. The two vehicles are for all practical purposes the same price. In view of the differences in standard equipment on various trim levels it's possible to configure either the Palisade or the Telluride with a higher/lower MSRP by adding or deleting features from one or the other. But if the top trims of each is configured to make the vehicles comparable with one another the MSRP of a Telluride is $47,330 versus that of a Palisade at $47,445. (According to each vehicle's "build and price" website tools.)That's a paltry difference of $115. MSRP's are often very rough guides to real world prices and I'm sure any Hyundai dealer would knock $115 off the price of a Palisade if it meant meeting the price of a Telluride so the real question is how popular each model is and how willing/unwilling a dealer is to make a deal. The jury is out on that question.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Stephen! I agree with you and your thoughts and observations of the differences between the two. I’ve been paying attention to whether people prefer one or the other. I also like the look and functional aspect of the Telluride compared to Palisade. Thanks again for stopping by!

    • @hhova29
      @hhova29 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice review. I noticed the 3rd row difference between the two one being power and the other manual. I like both very much and appeal towards the telluride because of its sportier appeal.
      I think due to its popularity and sale spikes to come, I don’t think dealerships will be making deals with perspective buying, and in fact probably try to rip them off. Or at least how they are in my regain, lol.

      weijun zhang Thanks for the info. I actually ordered an SX Telluride w the prestige package 3 months ago any my dealer to this day can’t give me any update whatsoever. It’s become so disheartening that I started to look at the new Explorer. I have driven the ST but have not driven the Telluride. The biggest and probably only complaint I’ve heard about the Telluride is that all the engine choices...well, there aren’t any and the engine lacks power.

    Looking at this just makes me miss my 2012 Honda Pilot even more. It got hit from the side few years ago 😢. I do like all of the interior features in the Telluride. You look good in it Nolan. Makes a good vehicle for a new addition 😉. You had lots of room on the third row. I’m just not to fond about the mimicking of the Bentley exterior look. But as always I learned everything by watching your videos. Outstanding review Nolan 👍

    The whole brand loyalty thing is ridiculously funny. A lot of people are gonna seriously lose out by buying inferior vehicles simply because this is a Kia. Last time I checked Kia has proven itself to be very reliable. If most people have had problems it's because they don't know how to take care of a vehicle. Putting cheap quality oil in your vehicle will damage it, getting low quality fuel will damage it, not doing the proper maintenance will damage it. It would seem like the problems are because of the user and not the equipment. My wife had a Kia for 8 years and not one serious issue out of it other than the standard problems which were easy to fix.

      I totally agree with you. We have 2013 Korean Hyundai Sonata for me and 2012 Japanese Honda Accord for my wife. I never had a problem on Sonata, but so many problem on Accord (front disk replaced, brakes repaired, CD/radio broken, ceiling cloth tore down, shift gear button broken, etc..). Japanese electronics such as Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba were the best in 1990's but now Korean Samsung, LG are the the best. So I think that the Korean automobile industry will do the same soon.

    As you found, the Telluride is a very impressive vehicle, especially at its price point. I was surprised to see that the Telluride lacks the "automatic bending headlights" on all trim levels. KIA like any manufacturer occasionally deletes a minor or less popular feature even when rivals offer it to meet a particular price point. But considering that my KIA 2018 Sorento has the "ABH" feature I was surprised to see it missing on the Telluride.
    The reason, I think, is that the Telluride's headlight protector lamps are stacked vertically rather than arranged horizontally as they are on the Sorento. Only the outside projector lamp swivels on my Sorento with almost no noticeable effect on forward illumination. I suspect that KIA felt that having one of the two projector lamps swivel when the steering wheel turns would be disconcerting if it noticeably reduced the illumination straight ahead.
    As far as driving dynamics is concerned, I think the CX-9 still tops the class in terms of handling. On the other hand it sacrifices so much in terms of passenger and cargo space (among other features) compared to the slightly shorter Telluride it's difficult to imagine that many consumers will care. Especially given that if canyon carving is a high priority there are many vehicles that are far better suited to that mission than either one. And the differences aren't small. The CX-9 has 134 cubic ft of passenger space in its 3 rows; the Telluride has 178 cubic ft. The Telluride has a total of 87 cubic ft of cargo space; the CX-9 has about 71 cubic ft. That's less than a Subaru Forester. My Sorento has more cargo and passenger space than a CX-9 and it's 10" shorter.
    Currently, there are only two glaring weaknesses in the Telluride. The top SX trim does not offer a bench seat second row option. I suspect that will be rectified in the next model year or even as a mid-year update. Time will tell. Secondly, there's simply the limited availability of the Telluride, especially the top trim SX version. KIA and their dealers seriously underestimated the huge demand for the top trim Telluride leading to a situation in which some dealers are marking up the vehicles on their lots or consumers face waiting lists of at least several months for delivery. Apparently, KIA customers are no longer simply budget shoppers. KIA dealers need to keep up.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Always great to hear from you Stephen! All excellent points too. It’s amazing how much space is wasted in the CX-9 and how well managed it is for the Sorento. I think a lot of other people forget about the Sorentos amber lights too. Love those and they bending light.
      No joke about Kia underestimating the Telluride. One person I work with was planning on getting one but just like you said they are asking over MSRP 😂.
      Thanks again for stopping by and taking the time, have a great weekend sir!

      Wow never have I read a very detailed and informative reply on TH-cam before. I think all of the points you said are absolutely right. One thing though regarding the ABH feature I think is that car manufacturer have to meet up the sale value and since Telluride provides so many other features for its price range, it had to make some sacrifices.
      For your information, funny thing is that Kia and Mazda have a very close relation in the history. Kia, when it first started selling cars, have been buying licenses from Mazda. They just named it differently but the car was exactly same as Mazda. Kia wished to keep buying licenses from Mazda but Mazda feared Kia invading their market and refused to give it to them. So instead, Kia bought a license from the Lotus (UK); which failed miserably leading to bankruptcy and Hyundai buying them. The license that Mazda refused to give to Kia was Miata (wonder what would've happened if Kia was able to buy Miata instead of Lotus). Anyhow, that is why Kia today still have pretty good handling, as they have learned from the Mazda's European sportiness settings.

    I wanted a Kia Telluride all wheel drive. They are super hard to find. One dealer bragged than he was charging 8K over MSRP. I almost bought it from a dealer who wanted to charge me only 3K over MSRP. Then I bought a Hyundai Palisade in Tracy and got WAY more options (fully loaded) at 500.00 UNDER MSRP. It is all wheel drive as well. It’s almost exactly the same, but a much better color. Got it all and saved a lot. My dealer probably could have easily sold my Palisade for thousands over MSRP as it was the only AWD within 100 miles of the Bay Area, but he chose to give me a great deal instead. I couldn’t find a KIA dealer who didn’t want more than MSRP on the AWD version. I will never buy a Kia.

    Great review, looking to buy Telluride vs Hyundai on looks alone. Some questions to you or owners..
    1) Depreciation on Kia vs Toyota 4 runner TRD badge best -1 ? comments ? $42,000 SX preferred but worried on Economy Brand residual worth after 3 years with 30,000 miles >? estimate?
    2) Like Paddles to kick it when needed , Telluride n/a but coming ? Hyundai has paddles ? but real difference ? comparison numbers 30-50 mph, 50-70 mph between the two ? Have a Grand Cherokee V8 with paddles , power on tap but eats gas, 14-16 mpg ave on 10% Methanol TX 85 fuel.
    The prices on Explorer / Tahoe etc have gone nuts as have Pickups, and I feel driving people away from USA brands. Owned a Certified X5 dealer 2 year old , a disaster, much garage time fixing Mexican parts failures not covered. Bought a Porsche, superb car, no issues, but expensive to service. Looking at value for money reliability and comfort for 6 .
    Saw the Telluride on ads, then the Philly car show in Feb, looks a little like an LR4 Land Rover (boxy). Just watched your two vids, well done. I think the tide has turned and the Germans and USA should worry ! Suggest you really complete your vids with a) Service intervals and estimated cost vs others b) Residuals at 3 years. (Kia USA should be able to compare estimates )?

      I don’t see the Telluride holding value better than a 4runner at all...those are legendary at holding value and their reliability. The Telluride offers many more features though if that’s important.
      As for the paddles...I’m not sure about future plans for those..
      I think the Telluride is an awesome value for what it offers but I’d wait a little bit until the supply/demand evens out. I’ve heard people paying over MSRP so far.

    Definitely looking forward to getting an SX with the Prestige package. Dealers in my area are also charging up to 5k or more OVER MSRP, but you can find MSRP or less deals by simply telling them no and going through a car buying service. I am just hoping Kia doesn't get a big head and charge 57k for the same car next year. If they stay at 47K they will sell a ton of these for years to come.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keep in mind that manufacturers don't sell vehicles to consumers. Their "customers" are their dealer networks. Once a dealer "buys" a vehicle a manufacturer is finished with the transaction. That doesn't mean that MSRP's and invoice prices won't creep up a bit from year to year but absent major feature changes those prices will reflect little if any more than inflation (or misguided tariff policies). KIA has a strong incentive to keep their dealers satisfied and significant price increases to those dealers undermine that.
      As to whether dealer pricing to consumers will rise unexpectedly, that depends on demand and availability. Many KIA dealers are putting "second stickers" on their vehicles, a common practice whenever an especially popular new model is introduced, but that's not a universal practice and it's not likely to be common as production of the Telluride catches up with the massive demand for the model.

    Great review! I was fully ready to go test drive one since my lease is up on my Mazda CX-9. However, the Kia Dealerships are marking up their Tellurides about $10,000 above MSRP, so that takes it out of the running for me. It's too bad, because it seems like the price is partly why the Tellurides have ranked so high.

      Debbie Meier dang that’s such a shame. I’ve heard about the price hikes which is terrible. Eventually the supply should catch up to the demand and get that price down. They’re impressive vehicles. Have you thought about the Palisade? I don’t believe they’ve got quite as much of a mark up

    I had my heart set on a Mazda because I loved the test drive. But Mazda is really proud of their prices. I am tired of bs car dealerships with bad salesmen that lied about having the vehicle in stock. After I find out they lied it killed the deal one dealership called and said hey we have the only AWD in Southern California. I was like really wow cool I want it. Made a special trip to go see if unbeknownst to the salespeople. I had cash in my pocket. But when I felt they said well let’s run your paperwork then we can dig it out of storage. I said well no I want to actually lay my hands on it to look at what you want to run my credit for. I asked like 3 times they was doing the double teaming me for my paperwork. Then I told them ok well I want the best price you can do out the door. Well they asked what my prices were, I said it doesn’t matter but I have them in writing. Give me yours and then I will show you. I showed them he said let me go talk to my manager. The final nail in the tire was the sales person was pulling up the car dealership name where I had got my price insinuating I was not telling the truth. Bye bye Felicia. But after all the calling. I was ready To go back to another salesman that was super nice to me. I wanted roof racks 400.00 for rails. Ok get pissy with me and I ask hey I got better prices and was told again I don’t see how. I said ok. Bye again so I just got so much guff. Now my new vehicle will be a 2020 that’s out instead of buying the 2019 because I just couldn’t see the vehicle I wanted.
