  • Hiking the Ruby Mountains? Forget the Ruby Crest Trail. This 19 mile off-trail high route hike connecting upper Lamoille Canyon to Seitz Canyon via Echo Lake highlights some of the best scenery and solitude the Ruby Wilderness has to offer.
We started our Ruby Mountains hike at the Road's end trailhead in upper Lamoille Canyon, and we'll finish in lower Lamoille canyon at the Powerhouse Trailhead. The hike begins by climbing an unnamed pass between Lamoille Canyon and Thomas Canyon, below Snow Lake Peak. The route then skirts around the upper basins of Thomas Canyon and Right Fork Lamoille Creek, below Mt Fitzgerald. The route then ascends a ridgeline between Right Fork Lamoille Creek and Echo Lake, bagging No Echo Knob along the way.
From No Echo Knob, the route drops down to Echo Lake. The route stays high above Echo Lake itself, skirting the mountainside above the eastern side of the lake. Now the route climbs to an unnamed pass below Mt Silliman, connecting Echo Lake to Seitz Canyon. A long (1400') descent down steep and narrow, snow-filled couloir brings us down to Seitz Lake. Seitz Canyon is a bushwhack
, leading to the lower reaches of the canyon. Here, we skirt the hillside above private property to connect to the Powerhouse Trailhead.

My hat is off to u 3 crazy rugged men. What a hike! Use it or lose it. Born & raised in Elko. Dad bought a beautiful acre in the town of Lamoille when I was 3 yrs old. Creek runs through it. Gorgeous 2-story "cabin" now stands on it. Best childhood & memories anyone could experience. Love my Lamoille!

Did you meet them on the SHR last year? I was going to join them but had plans to hike the Winds already with a friend, so I had a good excuse :)

2:15 ‘Pizza Hut enema’ - Not familiar with that but I am with the subway enema - takes affect within an hour of consuming a subway containing their lettuce mixture.

I haven’t been that high up in Lamoille sense The fire but it seems like all of the carbon went right back into the soil and it’s better than ever

I'm 2012, I hiked down Seitz Canyon by mistake (I was trying to come back down the Ruby Dome/Griswold Trail). Hardest hike I've ever done! I've watched all the BRT sections and loved every one!

Sounds like you got a great story out of it though! Did you go through the private ranch at the end of seitz canyon? Sure is hard to reach, but that's what keeps it so remote

@@SeekingLost It was getting dark when I got to the bottom of the canyon and my car was parked at the top of the trailhead for Griswold Lake, several miles away. So, I just slipped through and under all the fences along the base of the mountains to get back to my car! As a Native Nevadan, former hunter and retired biologist, all these incredible mountain ranges are places of the heart to me. I hope you keep going!

That didn’t look to bad,(compared to the other sections ). Should’ve camped by that lake and had a real nice experience.
All in all, a good hike.

Not terribly bad, no. The worst bushwhacking stuff was in Seitz Canyon at the end, for sure. Trust me I wish we did camp at that lake! We had it in our minds to knock it out in a day though and didn't bring overnight gear (obviously). Camping at Echo Lake would be my suggestion too!

Just as in the photo of the parking lot at the start of the trailhead, social media has done no favors to nature. The parking lot for this mountain range 3 years ago was 8-12 cars per day, and yes I know for a a fact. But thanks to folks like you the mountains are now cities of folk that just come and leave an extensive trace of their existence. At some point you need to think, is this a place that everyone, and social media is everyone, needs to know about. I am amazed at the lack of thought that goes into the placement of “look at me and like me” videos. And yes you did most likely displace the wild sheep and rams that make this there sliver of home. Please, just go, experience, and keep it personal. There are enough humans in the cities, we don’t need to give directions to the mountains.
