1.Bobby created the group 2.Ricky held down the lead vocals on competitions before they got a recording deal 3.Ralph turned down a solo deal so they can all get signed 4.Ronnie held the dancing and was the peacemaker 5.Johnny brought much needed second vocals to support Ralph and brought a more mature sound 6.Mike found out how business works and has since help the group sign better deals and better management till this day. In the end, they all did something for the group that helped the group to stand the test of time. They are very lucky to smell the fllowers of their sacrifices.
sonikku956 naw even In 90s and late 9os . still had that mj vocals high pitch sound to him.. . of course ur voice was high as kid but he kept it just like MJ

+Tavieus Williams Obviously not to the point of Candy Girl, but I see what you mean. Sensitivity sounds more like a Michael Jackson type song to be honest.
He told them AFTER he went in to the studio and recorded some songs. Michael Bivins was right not to tell him before because he would have thrown a fit. It should have been the label to tell him that they wanted a 5th member to round out the group and they were going with Johnny Gill. Granted it was Mike who set the entire thing up.
Ralph came to them about going sole, he didn't say he did. He played his song for them and wanted there opinion. They should have came to him about bringing Johnny Gill to the group before they took it to the label. He put his sole career on hold for them and didn't backstab them like they did him.
The other group members were good but Ralph's voice was New Editions sound. When he sang lead on that many songs his voice is the identity. Also a humble guy as a front man in a group is almost unheard of. I can imagine how man solo offers he turned down just out of loyalty.
Just like Diana Ross….folks always saying how Flo was a better singer (ok, that may be)….but it’s Diana’s voice on those songs and makes up the sound of the Supremes!
I'm not even mad at Mike for that. Ralph was always loyal to NE but at times you have to let Cats know; especially if it appears they think they're too big. Sadly though, it was all from a misunderstanding. I'm glad they grew past it & all are here to tell the story AND iron things out.
You need to watch the BBD story Behind the Music, I think it was called. Maybe it was on TV one. You can find here on TH-cam. Ralph wasn't honest. He was not showing up for booked events. They would be going to do television appearances where they had to perform and he wouldn't tell them he wasn't coming. And then he disrespected Mike's mom. Mike said that's when things changed between he and Ralph.
yea thats a fact Ralph just retaliated sometimes because of how they switched up on him at times basically if yall wanna act funny style so can i type of thing but Ralph never did anything to jepordize the Groups well being
Long story short, Ralph buried his own career by shelving his solo album. He should have went on his own after Bobby dipped. Only a complete fool would have turned down a Six Million Dollar solo deal. Remember, Maurice wanted him only at the beginning.
In a way, I kind of feel bad for Ralph! Personally I feel like he really cared about the group, but the labels and executives wanted him out in front because they had their own agenda so he was kind of in a tough spot! I believe Johnny was the best thing that ever happened to NE! He was just as talented as Ralph and Bobby, but he had no ego!
China yeah you trippin b cause bobby is a triple threat very good singer an amazing dancer has a phenomenal stage presence and an incredible performer, out of ne he was the most all around talented.
ME-Tube Your Space! Yes lawd! Bobby's character (Woody-The-Great ) did a show stopping performance. He was Sexy and Fineeeeee in his role too. Beautiful chocolate man.
Ralph is a good guy . There would be no New Edition if it wasn't for Ralph . I think Ralph did sacrifice fame and potential income by not going solo earlier in his career . Ralph waited to late to go solo and the music had started to change . I do think Ralph wasn't respected enough by all .
Isaiah Wasabi that’s true but if Ralph signed that contract to go solo when he was first offered in the beginning , it woulda been pointless. That would’ve been over for New Edition.
Up until this point, Ralph carried the group. He was the mature one and wasn't down with their foolishness. He felt that they are not carrying their weight. He and Johnny were the mature ones in the group. Their work ethnics were different than the others in the group.
Ralph carried the group, yes, but it wasn't like Bobby and Ricky couldn't have done more if given the chance. The manager and the label just put Ralph on most of the leads because it was a winning formula. And as far as work ethic, they all had great work ethics, we saw that from the very beginning and the boot camps Brook ran for them. The WHOLE GROUP put on a dynamic show every performance, from Ralph on lead to the impeccable dance steps and background vocals. I mean we saw what EVERYONE in the group was capable of once they left New Edition.
***** Lol, you're not making any sense. The success of BBD and Bobby on their own without New Edition speaks for itself. You can try and downplay everyone not named Ralph all you want, but the verdict is already in. Don't Be Cruel and Poison are undisputed classic albums. Facts.
***** Your dislike of everyone other than Ralph is strange. But do you though. I think I'll go listen to some BBD and Bobby B, then maybe a little Ralph T, lol. I like them all so.........
***** And the "real music" thing always makes me laugh. "Candy Girl" is real music but "Roni" isn't? Yeah, okay. I love NE, but even they would tell you their early music was bubblegum. But I loved it anyway.
He's not Being ruthless it's jus business you have to remember they weren't little kids no more Mike felt like without Ralph NE was over and it was bad enough Bobby left and losing Ralph would be the end of it Mike bivins had to do what he had to do friends is friend but this is business
Ralph didn't seem to realise it, but the unspoken subtext is that his loyalty was really to Bobby more than OG New Edition. He even slips and admits it in this scene. Deep down, he was too attached to Bobby and made too many excuses for Bobby's behaviour, to the detriment of the group sometimes. He had this childlike idealistic feeling of missing his best friend that clouded his judgement as an adult doing business.
I love me some Ralph!!! and seeing him on screen masked me love him more!!! he is a cool guy!!! the actors definitely had their same swag...... black is beautiful baby
Mike actually did have a good point to explaining why they decided to add Johnny to the group. i mean think about it for a minute, their voices did start to change once they got older & could any of the fans imagine hearing them sing Candy Girl or is is this the end with their deep voices. Maybe it's just me but it wouldn't have sounded the same
That was disrespectful. Ralph never said he was leaving the group. He said from the time they were in his house that he wanted to do a solo album and still be apart of New Edition. The other members probably didn’t want him making money twice and not them.
Ralph didn't seem to realise it, but the unspoken subtext is that his loyalty was really to Bobby as much as OG New Edition. He even slips and admits it in this scene. Deep down, he was too attached to Bobby and made too many excuses for Bobby's behaviour, to the detriment of the group sometimes. He had this idealistic feeling of missing and loving his childhood best friend so much that it clouded his judgement as an adult doing business.
Ralph just has the heart of gold. He refused to leave NE behind when they were 12, he did not vote Bobby out of the group, and even Johnny who was set to replace him became his closest friend out of the 6.
It’s called loyalty. Rizz understood what Bobby wanted, the other fellas didn’t care. But ended doing the same exact kind of music in BBD crazy how that works
I blame this whole situation on Jump & Shoot Productions. Their goal was to develop Ralph into a solo act. They thought Ralph was gonna be the next MJ. Ralph was trying to share the spotlight on the first 3 albums.Maurice Starr wanted the Jackson 5 & Jump & Shoot wanted MJ. MCA wasn’t gonna drop an NE album lead by Johnny, that’s too drastic of a change, so Ralph had to stay put. Johnny definitely made the group better. Bobby going solo did too. Bobby’s connection to NE made them a bigger name.
Bobby's solos kind of paved the way for BBD as well, it's clear BBD admired and envied Bobby's sound on Don't Be Cruel and wanted to go that direction too.
Leslie Anderson I'm on the fence about that lol. I feel like yeah they could have, but I also think about it this way; he didn't talk to them about him going solo. He made a few songs for his solo album and didn't tell them until after he did it. So they were all wrong
Ralph was like a quiet riot. Passive-aggressive. I never saw the appeal and the movie pretty much confirmed my perception. He felt he was entitled to a level of respect because he convinced himself that there would be no NE without him. By the time he realized that he could be replaced, he made everything about what they should have done. He basically told them to find their own way, while he was doing his. But when they did, it shocked him. They did not expect Johnny Gil to be that replacement. Johnny Gil was the best thing to ever happen to the egos of Ralph and Bobby. They both thought they were bigger than the group.
They said themselves, in past interviews, that even when they brought in Johhny, the label wasn't willing to do the record without Ralph. Soooo technically there really wouldn't have been an NE without him. I definitely understand how the other guys felt towards him all those years, though. They came in as a TEAM, splitting leads and responsibilities, to suddenly being pushed in the back in favor of one stand-out member. However, I also think a lot of their resentment was sorely misplaced. After all, it was the Label and Producers that pushed Ralph into the spotlight, yet it seems as though they blamed Ralph for them always being out of the spotlight, when in reality Ralph was a naive kid in the business just like they were, who had no real authority in it and was simply doing what he was told. As far as whether they should have told him about bringing in JG...well...I guess I too am on the fence about that one. I can see it from both sides. That whole scene was really messy and uncomfortable. You could really sense the betrayal on both ends. I think the reason I can sympathize with RT more, however, is because I have a friend in the business who was going through some very similar things with a group they were in. Resentment from bandmates plus industry folks talking in your ear etc. It's the same old story that happens with a lot of other groups, and ultimately tears them apart. Luckily, NE was able to still come together even after many situations that should've shut them down for good. Sorry for the long post. lol
PNdotCom I agree. Ralph was just singing lead and background, as he was told. He got a big head because that's how other people made him feel. He was humble in the beginning though. He could sing, dance, is good looking, c'mon. I don't condone thinking you're above the group, but it's hard not to when you're putting in the most work. It was Ralph we hear on all of the songs (except like 1 that I know of,one more day). It was Ralph who would be the only one recording and re recording his vocals. It was Ralph who had to learn hard choreo, do it, and still sing on key. Plus everything he went through in his personal life, music was his escape, but then he feels under appreciated by his friends.
Its odd you read the comments here condemning Ralph, but when Ralph spoke up for them they resented it. Then they had girls and when Ralph comes around they leave saying they cant hang with him cause he a superstar. All of that stuff was terrible. Bobby didnt have an issue with the group. It was management that he was rebelling against.
Coolyfett The drama with Ralph was jealousy and Ralph got sick of it and stood up for his self. But the group had an issue with Bobby because of his actions like overtaking the stage during concerts, not showing up to rehearsals, and when he did show up, he was coked up, getting arrested multiple times, etc.
BLACK MEN MADE NEW EDITION NOT BLACK WOMEN!!BOBBY STARTED THE GROUP THEY FUCKED WITH BOBBY THATSWHY HEWAS REBELLING AND WHITEMEN WANTED HISBLACK WIFE WHITNEY SOO MEN WITH POER HADTHE POLICEHARASS BOBBY!!
Coolyfett Looking at this video again, this was the first time Ralph stood up for himself (besides that scene when he played them his solo music). The other members of New Edition needed to see him in this light - he did *so much* for this group and sacrificed *so much* but they didn't know about any of it. 😔 Everyone has their breaking point.
If New Edition had black managers that was not trying to be pop stars I'm sure Bobby would have been easier to control. Bobby didn't want to sing that soft ass bubble gum movie their managers kept getting them.
I'm so confused why Ralph was shocked that they got a new lead singer when he basically told the group he was leaving? He told Ronnie go be a model, Mike to go get a brief case and go "run shit" and Rick to finally become a lead singer( Which Rick was originally suppose to be anyways). So yeah why was Ralph so upset? Was it because the label put his solo album on hold and when he came back they had move on? lol I get it but he left them in limbo about the group and they had families.

Brajae Joyner sad part is, every one saw commercial success after the group broke up with the exception of ralph. Bobby's solo career took off, Bel Biv Devoe topped the charts with poison, and Johnny joined another group with Gerald Lavert and them. Ralph always put the group before his own career smdh
Jessica Marie Actually Ralph had his hit Single Sensitivity. His second album sales flopped. Thats why they did the Home Again Tour because so did BBD 2nd album. I think you;'re confusing the dates a bit.
Brajae Joyner Actually he did leave them in limbo. The movie doesn't accurately show the time frame and all the stuff that happened. Ralph was not showing up to events, disrespected Mike's mom. And the studio session with Jam and Lewis was actually the second session, Ralph refused to go to the first. The conversation by the pool hinted at all this stuff, but never directly touched on it. I believe Mike said this was all in a span of a couple of years.
Ralph never talked about issue he had with them in public. Mike said something to him after they won their first award. Mike should tell that story and how Ralph felt disrespected. Like, Johnny said the least talented one always have something to say. I would have left them in limbo too. The story about his mother, come on thats what his mad about. That's the only thing he could find to be mad about. Jam and Lewis said the Johnny walked into the second session and they all know about johnny except Ralph. They were already recording when he found out. Mike is a snake, I wouldn't want him as a friend.
Mike may be the least talented but he's the one who stopped them from getting ripped off and finally got them paid. Biv is a natural born leader and exec who can find and develop talent.
Man I like yazz better as Michael Bivins then I do as Hakeem if Hakeem had 1 ounce of Michael Bivins business like mind he could probably take over the empire Algee as Ralph is perfect I ❤️ algee so much
So they were supposed to just sit back and let Ralph go solo and have no plans for the group until Ralph left, then scramble to find a lead singer? It is a business. They did what they had to do to protect their interests.
@Hundred852 did Ralph inform them before he recorded tracks for the solo album? He had them recorded, then invited them to his house to ask what they thought. Who is to say what he planned on doing? There was no way for them to know.
@@jeffreywhitlock4882 Ralph did that for a reason. There was always tension in the group between Ralph and the other members (besides Bobby) because they were jealous of the fact that Ralph was the lead and was getting the most attention. So they took their jealousy out on Ralph, which was wrong. They were treating him wrong and purposely leaving him out. And the final straw was when they won their first award and Ralph poured his heart out to them, telling them that he loves them. Then after all that, Mike tells him that they’re just business partners. That is what made Ralph start focusing on himself and start working on his solo project. Ralph didn’t deserve that treatment, especially when he vouched for them to have solo parts in their songs. So you can’t blame him for isolating himself and focusing on his solo projects. And even after all that, he still was never going to leave the group.
it pains me watching the documentary knowing how much they screwed over Ralph. the group and management. he could have easily started a solo career from the beginning but said "you have to take us all of nothing". he was very loyal and humble. didn't even tell anyone that they only wanted him. bobby was kind of the opposite. any chance he got he would let them know he was the one who wanted to put a group together and was his idea. Lol.
Bbd & Bobby B was hating on Ralph Tresvant because he was the lead singer and the female fans was always screaming for Ralph. RT was always humble and loyal as kid/adult to the group. Another thing if it wasn’t for RIZZ there wouldn’t be a New Edition... The movie speaks for its self.
It was never going to be just Ralph and Johnny….they had always planned to involve the others….the others found out about it before being told and that’s where the breakdown happened….FROM RALPH’S MOUTH!….Ralph is all about NE and being on stage with his friends….look back on old interviews he clearly indicates just that.
Michael Bivins don't play!!! The way he fired Gary. I wonder if Busby told Mike not to say anything to Ralph. Busby met with Ralph before he flew to Minneapolis when he convinced him to do the record. Interesting that Busby didn't mention that he had signed off on Johnny being a part of NE. And when Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis suggested they form their own group, what was Mike's first reaction? Better that money split 3 ways instead of 5.
Man...i don't know it's almost like they had no other choice but to get Johnny. They still should have at least told Ralph, but I understand why Biv pulled the trigger on that that one.
Yeah the movie left out a lot of things that happened. Also, this was over a span of a couple of years, not just a few months. Ralph didn't even go to the first recording session with Jam and Lewis. That is why the question was asked, it was actually there second time there.
Carl Phillips right, hearing everyone say that Ralph had every right to be pissed gets old, because yeah technically he did have a right but so did they, he acted like they never did anything when in reality he was placed on a pedestal over them when they were young kids, and obviously that wasn't Ralph's fault but naturally that put the spotlight on him and put everyone else on the back burner, so it wasn't like they were all equal and just weren't doing their part, and then to make matters worse, Ralph never told them that he felt the way he did, and he obviously never mentioned the solo project, until the worst possible time when he had already set it in motion, of course they were gonna be hurt, and yeah they should've mentioned JG, but they didn't because that's the type of shit you do when you're salty and tryna be petty, plus they were trying to make a statement and they did. they weren't gonna depend on Ralph to eat, or keep the lights on. point blank period.
@@miaallen6161you're someone who gets it...Ralph took a decision first then informed his group members after he started the project...Mike went and got Johnny and he starts to get mad. He and all the peeps who say he should have been told about Johnny are basically being hypocritical...
Oh yes and I'm so glad that they had chosen a Handsome dude to play Ronnie and I'm happy that Ronnie is my favorite one and the real Ron is hot as hell too.
So basically I feel like this whole thing was wrong. Ralph wanted to do a solo record, he shows it to the rest of NE. They freak out saying what the hell is this. I understand they didn't know how to feel cause they thought he was leaving the group. But he wasn't initially going to leave. So I just wanna know why in the hell would Mike try and replace Ralph with Johnny...Ralph has done all the work singing lead and background vocals. If he really wanted to go solo he would have left back in 83. But he sacrificed that for them. He put his solo effort from 87 on the shelf. He wasn't exactly going to leave. I don't really know how that would turn out if Ralph actually left. But at the same time I'm glad Mike brought Johnny in, because he gave them that mature sound they were looking for. But when Ralph spoke to Johnny you could tell Ralph felt a way. They were out while he was left in the studio, and I'm glad those two bonded and came to an understanding. Things happen for a reason I guess cause if I'm being honest, Heart Break is their BEST album that's for sure.
Jaren Smith They were pissed about Ralph playing the song that he did on his own because he flaked on them for a show the previous day. They went to see him the following day and that's when they found out about his desire to go solo. Bad timing on Ralph's part especially after he went MIA + plus he didn't answer his door for Mike's mom when she came looking for him the night that he faked on the show. Mike was thinking the right move in terms of securing a potential replacement for Ralph but there was some resentment and pettiness involved with his decision as well understandably. He spoke on it during the TVOne BBD episode.
Ralph was more mad at the way they did it. He was not included, they back stab him as a friend. Ralph was a solo artist when he was in NE, the rest of them did nothing but backup dancer. If they were any good why couldn't they stay as new edition without Ralph like NE didn't stop because Bobby left. Mike played his self and the group. He always throw shade at Ralph. I want to hear Ralph side of the story regarding Mike mother. Mike could be making up stuff to make Ralph look like the bad guy. Ralph said in an interview that something was said and he started looking out for him stuff. Mike also played his boy Ricky, if Ricky was such a great singer like Mike always saying how come he couldn't be lead. I went to a BBD concert and they played NE song and the audience sung the song. Mike said Ricky you can you sing Ralph part in Candy girl, he tried one line and stopped. Ralph was a true friend to those grateful backup dancers.
Ricky couldn't sing lead as often as he wanted to because Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis allegedly highlighted Ralph and Johnny according to BBD. That's supposedly why New Edition only did a few songs with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis on the Home Again album.
I never understand why people say Ralph "sacrificed" so much for the group by singing lead. That's what all lead singers do. Bobby was DYING for the chance to sing lead over Ralph,. He and Rick had to sacrifice and be in the background when they clearly had the talent to sing lead and eventually do big things outside the group. Salute to Ralph for being a great lead singer, but it's not a sacrifice when he was doing what he wanted to do which was sing lead on like 90% of NE songs.
without Ralph's voice where would they be that's the voice that made the money they shouldn't be so ungrateful. but if they were put in a position like he was all of them would have only thought about themselves. grown men now and they still jealous of him with the slick looks he can't help he got what y'all will never have and that's a heart
They should of told Ralph before they made the move but I fully understand why Mike did what he did. In their defense if you think about it Ralph started a solo project without letting them know and they felt betrayed and scared because Ralph seem like he wanted to do his own thing so Mike panicked but because of that Johnny was brought in and transformed NE for the better. One of my fav groups of all times and all legends
Dre TruStatement Mike is a snake and selfish they treated Ralph like garbage that's why Johnny was brought in. I wish you guys stop saying that Johnny transformed NE listen to Heartbreak Ralph still sings the bulk of the album what are you talking about. Johnny Gill himself will tell you he is a backup singer to Ralph within NE, New Edition has always been Ralph and friends the movie told you and showed you that.
There's a lot of missing info in the movie.A day before, Ralph deliberately missed a show in Memphis forcing the three to improvise a performance. They went to his house when they got back to Boston after trying in vain to find out why he refused to travel. So to hear that he all along was on an album by himself, after missing other shows and performances previously must have been a rude shock to them. For all his attributes, Ralph missed it that time.Sure they were wrong not to tell him about drafting Johnny but he gave the vibe that he was more interested in a solo project than being in a group.Plus in all honesty,I think Mike only made a survival play in getting Johnny, and while he may have looked bad, you cant tell how scared he and the rest were whole taking that decision given how Ralph clearly isolated himself from everyone else...
Not only did they feel betrayed and scared by Ralph pursuing a solo career, but they as a group were trying to figure out what direction to go in after Bobby left and they were now a quartet
@@Sheisintrovertlibra Johnny gave them that grown mature sound. Yeah sure Ralph sang lead on most of the albums songs but Johny Gill was the MAN at that time and brought in a whole new audience and partners. He was singing grown folks music at that time. Johny needed them and they needed Johny. Johny did transform them into a bigger powerhouse. So even though what Mike did looks bad it worked out for all of them in the long run and gave us some great music.
@@Sheisintrovertlibra Also Mike didnt go after Johny until Ralph started becoming to big for the group and started showing that he was about to go solo. Remember Mike didnt even want to really be in the group and wanted to play ball. He knew that Ralph was NE's bread and butter so he had to survive because he is the least talented one but he was the business that got them to greater heights and thats facts. He had to do it again when Johny after awhile wanted to go back solo. Thats how BBD started. Mike has always been forced to make a business play and did every time.
Jimmy and Terry knew what they were doing in the long run. New Edition wouldnt have had as much worldwide success if it weren't for Johnnys mature sound in Heartbreak. Unfortunately it looked like Ralph had to sacrifice a solo career for the album
I that moment Ralph was hot. He walked in to what probably felt like a ambush and poor Jonny caught stray shots. But to Ralph's credit he manned up and realize He messed up and apologized no only that he put his ego aside and realized the Value Jonny brought to the group not just in voice but work ethics. For Ralph he probably felt like he had someone to share the load with.
There are things the series doesnt cover. After NE left "Gary" aka Bill Dern, they signed directly with MCA as a group. Johnny then signed a solo deal with MCA in early 87. Ralph didnt want to leave NE, he wanted to a do a solo project while being in the group, he says this in the series. MCA didnt really know what they wanted to do with Johnny so they asked Jimmy & Terry if they would produce for him. Mike ask Johnny to join NE and gets Busby (MCA) to sign off on it and no one tells Ralph about it. NE thinks Ralph is leaving & Busby not allowing it. Jimmy & Terry end up producing the NE + Johnny album aka Heartbreak.
When NE was with street wise as we saw in the movie, yes Ralph was the lead but they all were still doing some solo parts. When they signed with the big boys the label put Ralph on a pedestal. The other members started slacking off some cause....the label effectively made them background people. Heartbreak changed that and JG is too good of a voice NOT to have lead or solo part.
The series down plays that a lot of their problems started by pushing Ralph to the front & Ricky & Bobby to the back. It made all the members dislike the same target. Management wanted to rob the group & push Ralph at the same time.
regular 2112 Mike attitude kinda irritated me to a lil bit. He was a dam ball player therefore singing DANCING n raping was a whole new out look on life for Mike Mike was kinda ungrateful to me in so many ways but Mike taking that advice on learning how to manage made. Mike a dam GOOD producer now Mike produced and an boyz to men.even tho it didn't last like N.E. But they have dam good talent. Michael learning how to produce made Michael SMART ENUFF TO realize they been played from day 1 Mike realize he was being played out his movie an popcorn money which Mike found out later on he could had his own movie theatre at that time god had bigger n better plans for them look where they all at today 6 SUCCESSFUL AFICIAN AMERICANS FAMOUS ON THE HALL AN WALK of fame HOW many of us would LOVE to be there today HELL I know I would.somtimes things happens for a reason an depending on way a person willing to sacrifice to get it or get there🤔
Me too. And in a way... here he was kind of the bad guy since he set the whole thing up without consulting anyone OR Ralph beforehand about Johnny being in the group let alone WHO he was replacing. According to the Real Ralph, Johnny was low-key brought in to replace Ralph and not Bobby and from what I've seen in the film... Mike held this deep seeded grudge against Ralph for wanting to do something for himself outside the group. I get he was all about keeping the group's business affairs in order, but he didn't need to go THAT far when it came to Ralph's contribution to the group. Things like this happen with groups all the time and it's getting old and pointless!
I love Ricky and Ronnie because they were the least argumentative. Rickey in part three was kinda heart broken and so confused when everyone started fighting and Ronnie was always just there and went with the flow
The one sole time Ronnie popped off was at Bobby, and Ronnie only got that hot because Brooke had his heart scare the same day and Ronnie was scared of losing his Uncle😔
Ralph was always very humble even when he was a lil boy .....

2.Ricky held down the lead vocals on competitions before they got a recording deal
3.Ralph turned down a solo deal so they can all get signed
4.Ronnie held the dancing and was the peacemaker
5.Johnny brought much needed second vocals to support Ralph and brought a more mature sound
6.Mike found out how business works and has since help the group sign better deals and better management till this day.

Is it me or did Ralph sound just like Micheal Jackson when he was young too. That candy girl part send shivers down my spine it was so on point.
They altered his voice to sound more like Michael Jackson. He was a teenager, so his voice wasn't THAT high back then, even before his balls dropped.

Monica Logan true
Monica Logan he did tell them and they got upset
He told them AFTER he went in to the studio and recorded some songs. Michael Bivins was right not to tell him before because he would have thrown a fit. It should have been the label to tell him that they wanted a 5th member to round out the group and they were going with Johnny Gill. Granted it was Mike who set the entire thing up.
Ralph came to them about going sole, he didn't say he did. He played his song for them and wanted there opinion. They should have came to him about bringing Johnny Gill to the group before they took it to the label. He put his sole career on hold for them and didn't backstab them like they did him.
We gon' change that Candy Girl into a Chocolate Woman! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
😂
@@tonydale1875 1:06 Ralph: yo what's going on? Why is he here?
@JaTorean Kegler what happened?
Giles Peterson 🤣🤣🤣
Exactly!
Ralph, Mike and Bobby were played the exceptionally 💯💯💯
"What y'all looking at me for? Now he know we ain't depending on his ass b"
Mike wasn't bullshittin 😂😂😂😂
I'm not even mad at Mike for that. Ralph was always loyal to NE but at times you have to let Cats know; especially if it appears they think they're too big. Sadly though, it was all from a misunderstanding. I'm glad they grew past it & all are here to tell the story AND iron things out.
ralph took alot of shit from them,he had every right to be mad
DJBlack909 he actually tried to take his money so he was smart not to take the deal from morice
What are you talking about? Ralph would have been up there with Keith Sweat and Bobby Brown if he went solo in 86-87
BET probably took some notes from Lifetime on what not to do when making a bio pic.
I guess you want them to do Selena next?
Ana Johnson yuuuup
Ana Johnson I'm Dead Af😂💀
sainttrunks1982 Selena already have a biopic.
Fonda Jones x+j
No. Ralph only wanted to protect the integrity of New Edition.
I love Ralph's part in this scene. Ralph is right. You don't invite nobody in on me unless I know about it.
algee smith aka (ralph tresvant) is so cute
I'm sorry but that line "oh i was gone call you rizz but i had that modeling gig" killed me
In a way, I kind of feel bad for Ralph! Personally I feel like he really cared about the group, but the labels and executives wanted him out in front because they had their own agenda so he was kind of in a tough spot! I believe Johnny was the best thing that ever happened to NE! He was just as talented as Ralph and Bobby, but he had no ego!
I agree that Bobby had/has his issues, but he was a good singer and a great performer! Don't Be Cruel is one of the great R@B albums of all time!
China yeah you trippin b cause bobby is a triple threat very good singer an amazing dancer has a phenomenal stage presence and an incredible performer, out of ne he was the most all around talented.

He did a great job! I made a funny review video about it on my channel if you want to check it out!

Ralph sacrificed sooo much for this group
Ralph is a good guy . There would be no New Edition if it wasn't for Ralph . I think Ralph did sacrifice fame and potential income by not going solo earlier in his career . Ralph waited to late to go solo and the music had started to change . I do think Ralph wasn't respected enough by all .
@@wandabizzle113 Bobby was really the one who founded new edition
Isaiah Wasabi that’s true but if Ralph signed that contract to go solo when he was first offered in the beginning , it woulda been pointless. That would’ve been over for New Edition.
@@isaiahwasabi1033 but maurice starr offered Ralph the contract. Ralph asked to bring his friends on.
What did he sacrifice for the group he had a short solo career
Up until this point, Ralph carried the group. He was the mature one and wasn't down with their foolishness. He felt that they are not carrying their weight. He and Johnny were the mature ones in the group. Their work ethnics were different than the others in the group.
Kelly Street Thank you . He sung lead on all their songs except for Mr Telephone man.
The new edition a little bit similar to the temptations
Bobby - David
Ronnie - Melvin
Ralph - Eddie
Ricky - Paul
Mike - Otis
Johnny - Dennis
Factz 🎯💯
The way The "New Edition" of all of those old groups. The Temptations come from that 5 part harmony line like The Whispers etc.
Yes, I couldn't have said it better myself. Only difference is all members of New Edition are still alive praise God! 🙏🏾
Facts
Just like David, Eddie and Dennis were their own group called the Former Leads of the Temptations. Bobby, Ralph and Johnny started a group in 2008
“What y’all looking at me for?” Mike did NOT care. 😆
For some strange reason I could see Ricky, Ralph, Johnny and Bobby saying ‘Ain’t nobody coming to see you Mike’ 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
no bc that line from the temptations has been stuck in my head for weeks.. so this has me hollering 😭✋🏾
Hahaha I’ve always loved the way he delivered that line
Imagine if they kicked Mike out the group?
They would have been Bobby’s line to mike😂😂
them producer's knew what they was doing when the made Ralph lead, he had that MJ VOICE as a kid
Sean Mccloud Basicallt
I meant basically. He did have the MJ voice
Michael Bivens was ruthless! Wow.
He's not Being ruthless it's jus business you have to remember they weren't little kids no more Mike felt like without Ralph NE was over and it was bad enough Bobby left and losing Ralph would be the end of it Mike bivins had to do what he had to do friends is friend but this is business
He really was
Kirk simmons yup the show must go on, mike had an executive mangers mindset literally after bobby left the group
That’s not ruthless. That’s smart. If Ralph left the group that would’ve been the end of NE. Mike made a survival play.
they did ralph wrong well except Johnny. After all he didnt know just like Ralph didnt
The temptations and new edition are amasing
Idk why but when he said “So unless Bobby’s coming back, the four of us is New Edition” I felt that. #Loyalty 1:51
Little did Ralph know him and johnny would have chemistry on the songs like can you stand the rain and young girl heartbreak
I love me some Ralph!!! and seeing him on screen masked me love him more!!! he is a cool guy!!! the actors definitely had their same swag...... black is beautiful baby
"Oh, word?" When Ralph had no other comeback to the modeling gig comment, I fell out.
Mike was basically like he's here to low key replace Bobby but if you wanna go too then Bye, we won't be left in the dust
Mike actually did have a good point to explaining why they decided to add Johnny to the group. i mean think about it for a minute, their voices did start to change once they got older & could any of the fans imagine hearing them sing Candy Girl or is is this the end with their deep voices. Maybe it's just me but it wouldn't have sounded the same
I don't think it's a matter of having Johnny in the group, but they didn't tell him or let him have a say in it...
Bobby's solos kind of paved the way for BBD as well, it's clear BBD admired and envied Bobby's sound on Don't Be Cruel and wanted to go that direction too.
that was true they should talk to him about it first
Leslie Anderson I'm on the fence about that lol.
PNdotCom U gotta think it just wasn't those records, Ralph was new edition. Johnny cant sing Ralph parts from there earlier hits
Mike said “let’s work” just for him, Ronnie, and Ricky to go to the club later. While Ralph and Johnny were in the studio working😂💀
That happened a day or more after. Did you not notice they were wearing different clothes ?
Nah it's Ricky, Johnny, Ralph, Bobby
Actions speak louder indeed. Mike seems like a typical loudmouth who thinks he did something because he made a quick buck
Algee Fine Asf When He Mad 😍🙌🏾😘❤️
Rizz aka Ralph was all about new edition regardless of what happened
Mike didn't play! He's about those dollars!
1shaymocha he a Leo we don't play
I agree, New Edition treated Ralph badly.

I like how Mike and Ricky were willing to apply pressure to get what they wanted with Johnny in the group.
That wasn’t pressure, that was being snakes
So they were supposed to just sit back and let Ralph go solo and have no plans for the group until Ralph left, then scramble to find a lead singer?
It is a business. They did what they had to do to protect their interests.
@@jeffreywhitlock4882 No it’s how they did it. You can’t just add someone to a group without discussing it within everyone in the group.
Ralph he is 😍😍😍💓💍💕
Yes no hate but he mines💕😝🤪🤤
Dude did a great job playing Ralph he was just too damn short and Ralph was never the shortest in the group. That was usually Slick and Biv
"Whatchall lookin at me fo" Bryshere is funny
it pains me watching the documentary knowing how much they screwed over Ralph. the group and management. he could have easily started a solo career from the beginning but said "you have to take us all of nothing". he was very loyal and humble. didn't even tell anyone that they only wanted him. bobby was kind of the opposite. any chance he got he would let them know he was the one who wanted to put a group together and was his idea.
And thats why Ralph and Johnny own New Edition trademark. Lol
Ralph stated recently that trademark issue is over. All 6 have equal rights.
For your information all of new Edition owns the new edition trademark
It was never going to be just Ralph and Johnny….they had always planned to involve the others….the others found out about it before being told and that’s where the breakdown happened….FROM RALPH’S MOUTH!….Ralph is all about NE and being on stage with his friends….look back on old interviews he clearly indicates just that.
Ralph so cute when he mad lol.
The actors who played Jimmy & Terry didn't get their props, they're perfect
Michael Bivins don't play!!! The way he fired Gary. I wonder if Busby told Mike not to say anything to Ralph. Busby met with Ralph before he flew to Minneapolis when he convinced him to do the record. Interesting that Busby didn't mention that he had signed off on Johnny being a part of NE. And when Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis suggested they form their own group, what was Mike's first reaction? Better that money split 3 ways instead of 5.
Wendy Grant. Busby was playing everybody.
Carl Phillips right, hearing everyone say that Ralph had every right to be pissed gets old, because yeah technically he did have a right but so did they, he acted like they never did anything when in reality he was placed on a pedestal over them when they were young kids, and obviously that wasn't Ralph's fault but naturally that put the spotlight on him and put everyone else on the back burner, so it wasn't like they were all equal and just weren't doing their part, and then to make matters worse, Ralph never told them that he felt the way he did, and he obviously never mentioned the solo project, until the worst possible time when he had already set it in motion, of course they were gonna be hurt, and yeah they should've mentioned JG, but they didn't because that's the type of shit you do when you're salty and tryna be petty, plus they were trying to make a statement and they did. they weren't gonna depend on Ralph to eat, or keep the lights on. point blank period.
tbh what . Yeah what you said made sense. TeamRalph/Team New Edition still though
ditto. johnny gill and jam and lewis outright saved that group. PERIOD
@@miaallen6161you're someone who gets it...Ralph took a decision first then informed his group members after he started the project...Mike went and got Johnny and he starts to get mad. He and all the peeps who say he should have been told about Johnny are basically being hypocritical...

Mike always seemed to have the solution to every problem, always one step ahead. He only gave up the night of Brooke's heart attack.
Jaren Smith the original plan was to split the lead between Johnny and Ricky
"Why y'all lookin' at me for?!" Lol
lol "I had that modelin gig"
It's like a blessing in disguise ...if this didn't happen there wouldn't have been new edition or bbd
without Ralph's voice where would they be that's the voice that made the money they shouldn't be so ungrateful. but if they were put in a position like he was all of them would have only thought about themselves. grown men now and they still jealous of him with the slick looks he can't help he got what y'all will never have and that's a heart
mona mejia . Tell it sister. My sentiments exactly. Ralph has a heart. It looks like thats why things hurt him more.
Michael Bivins Move On Letting Johnny Gill. In New Edition Was The Best Thing They Ever Did!
"We gon change that candy girl to choclate woman." LOL😂😂

Bwahahahah Mike was unphased by Ralph's anger...
There wouldn’t be no NEW EDITION if it wasn’t for RALPH!!

So that’s how Janet and Bobby met
Eventually Ralph n Johnny put their differences aside n became cool with each other
They should of told Ralph before they made the move but I fully understand why Mike did what he did.
*i had that modeling gig*
“Expanding my horizons “😂
on the scene I visualize the real group seriously

Jimmy Jam walked away from them like, what kinda mess you all done started! Peace!
Ralph went off😂
Jimmy and Terry knew what they were doing in the long run. New Edition wouldnt have had as much worldwide success if it weren't for Johnnys mature sound in Heartbreak. Unfortunately it looked like Ralph had to sacrifice a solo career for the album
Heartbreak is a legendary album, though, so I imagine Ralph is happy with the choice he made and realises it was the right one.
I would of told Michael Bivins to sit his ass down. From what i see Mike always had to be in control, trying to run shit.
Ralph treated Johnny so bad at the start and the way that Luke portrayed that emotion made me feel even more sad for Johns at this point.
And Ralph apologized.
It’s been 5 years since this was released!?! Where did time go!?!

He'll be alright.
😂😂😂
These boys are so handsome 😍😍😍
Pretty sure we already know this….but thanks! 👌🏽
@@carolinagirl3110 You didn't know, but you know now. Thanks
Ron got jokes, straight petty but I'm here for it lol. (I still love rizz but that was funny)
he's a Scorpio, they live petty and hold a grudge beyond the grave
@pendafen7405 I can contest to that.
Why is johnny hella happy😂
Man these brothers look delicious in this sing ooowee
No one's gonna talk about how Keith looks so much like Ronnie?
Ikr and he got his height
When NE was with street wise as we saw in the movie, yes Ralph was the lead but they all were still doing some solo parts. When they signed with the big boys the label put Ralph on a pedestal. The other members started slacking off some cause....the label effectively made them background people. Heartbreak changed that and JG is too good of a voice NOT to have lead or solo part.
The series down plays that a lot of their problems started by pushing Ralph to the front & Ricky & Bobby to the back. It made all the members dislike the same target. Management wanted to rob the group & push Ralph at the same time.
Mikes attitude irritated me so bad
regular 2112 he a leo like me fam we don't bullshit
regular 2112 Mike attitude kinda irritated me to a lil bit. Michael learning how to produce made Michael SMART ENUFF TO realize they been played from day 1
Mike realize he was being played out his movie an popcorn money which Mike found out later on he could had his own movie theatre at that time god had bigger n better plans for them look where they all at today 6 SUCCESSFUL AFICIAN AMERICANS FAMOUS ON THE HALL AN WALK of fame HOW many of us would LOVE to be there today HELL I know I would.somtimes things happens for a reason an depending on way a person willing to sacrifice to get it or get there🤔
Joseph Jones Imma Leo.
I relate
Mike was right tho when he said now he know they wasn't depending on him
I love Ricky and Ronnie because they were the least argumentative. Rickey in part three was kinda heart broken and so confused when everyone started fighting and Ronnie was always just there and went with the flow
The one sole time Ronnie popped off was at Bobby, and Ronnie only got that hot because Brooke had his heart scare the same day and Ronnie was scared of losing his Uncle😔
if Ralph wanted to be the only lead singer there would've be no new edition!
the acter dresses just exactly like the real Ralph would
