    something to always do when watching Ramin: look at his eyes. that is why I love the recordings. in both Phantom and Les Miserables you can see the emotion he pours out not only in his voice, which makes him a good vocal actor, but the eyes make him an all around professional. It's why I fell in love with his performances before I ever saw his real face.

      He is a treasure. His Phantom gave me a completely new view of the character, and indeed the entire show.

    We saw this version in previews. Hugo describes Enjolras as majestic, powerful, born leader. This Enjolras is tall -- just right -- and had a grand voice -- again, just right. Great version...and I saw the Broadway 1986 and 2006 versions. Each superb.

    I've seen this show many times but this has to be by far the best production I've ever seen. The entire cast is phenomenal. Just give Ramin & Caissie their Tonys already!

    • @michael5876
      @michael5876 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1. Ramin deserved the tony award for best actor in a musical, not saying that NPH didn't deserve it.
      2. I will never not be mad that Will wasn't nominated because i literally get goosebumps hearing/seeing his javert. Definetly up there with Earl Carpenter in my opinion.
      Honestly the entire cast deserved a tony because i am obsessed with the 2014 revival of les mis and everyone in it.
      Thank you for coming to my tedtalk 😶‍🌫️

    Why didn't they release a cast recording? They clearly have all the footage

    • @TSF_Ukraine
      @TSF_Ukraine 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Oh yes, they do. But they will never release a full video recording of this quality (or any quality, really) to the public, because they're too afraid it would impact the ticket sales for the actual show... even though a recording like this would most likely sell millions of copies (add billions worldwide, if you add subtitles in different languages as well). And as for the audio recording, guess it's not different enough from the previous one. Back in the day, there used to be innovation in almost every production - different orchestra sizes, different arrangements, they tried out new things, but since the 25th anniversery, the sound quality remains almost exactly the same. Making a new audio recording just for the sake of having different people sing it was probably deemed counterproductive or pointless.

    My school's production of Les Mis got to see this while it was in previews last week! (We're in Connecticut, so it's a 90 minute bus ride for us, luckily.) I'm obsessed with the show, so I was too excited to put into words when the overture began. I think the original production that's still playing in London is much more powerful than this new and elaborate one. Still, I loved it beyond words, if not just for being able to say that I'd seen Les Misérables.

    I just see so many people hating on the voice of the actress that played Éponine. Everyone has their own voices , ways to sing and their own renditions to songs. I don’t think you should say she’s terrible just because you don’t like how she sounds

    Awful: hammy and overdramatized; yelling, rather than singing. A shadow -- and, a weak one at that -- of the delicate, nuanced, and balanced performance I experienced when I first saw it on Broadway in 1991. These people really need to get some coaching from "opera people" who know how to perform without hamming it up and fill each note with meaning, instead of yelling. I'll keep my memories...and, my money.

      I couldn't agree more! The new production was everything you described and 100x more raunchy, too. The original production was and always will be the gold standard for these songs. Cameron and his team loused this one up just for shock factor. And to add insult to injury, they took away the moving center portion of the stage which made so many scenes much more interesting. I don't know why they felt the need to change anything.

    • @TSF_Ukraine
      @TSF_Ukraine 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jefflopes5070 I must agree with you. Even though it's interesting to see the changes out of pure curiosity, the original Broadway production was superior in every regard.
      The whole major downfall happened with the 25th anniversary, I think, when they went on and changed everything starting from costumes and culminating with blocking and orchestrations. For the worse.
      I still remember how they've changed Javert's uniforms around, making him wear his intro uniform in the show and restricting his iconic jacket to the prologue only. Why would they do something like that? Still boggles my mind. At least they've given it back to him in this production. Too bad the orchestrations remained the same 25th anniversary ones.
      The original production was nuanced, yet grand at the same time. It had no need for flashy effects, for shouting and being over the top. I loved how certain scenes took place pretty much in complete darkness with little to no backdrops. The actors carried the scenes with their performances, and were responsible for making you feel and understand the situation.
      The music was gritty, dark and powerful. Take Javert's theme (arrest / runaway cart) for example. It used to sound powerful, heavy, commanding. Combined with his slow, deliberate entrance out of the shadows, it created an atmosphere of total control and dominance on his part.
      In the new productions, he usually runs out as if he's been chasing something hecticly before being alerted, barely catches his breath and goes crazy with the prostitutes, throwing them around while the score is playing away staying surprisingly light and very, very fast (that's the prime feature of the new orchestrations - gotta go fast, lest it might become less dramatic). Javert has to be a collected and cold individual, an experienced officer who commands respect and instills fear just by looking at you, not an erratic man jumping around shouting at people.
      By the way, if anyone wants to see a cool Javert, check out Hartwig Rudolz from the German Les Miserables production. He was a part of the official Broadway replica production in Duisburg, and he plays the part perfectly. Despite the fact that it's in German, if you know the show, it's very enjoyable to watch.
      The new productions just dont feel right. Anyhow, I'm ranting and going to stop now. Have a great day everyone!
