Absolutely exactly where we were supposed to be then, at that time in our lives, and in history. Music is the realest thing we share. Glad we all enjoy it so deeply.

Universal language in which people with no other connections, including language, can speak and understand each other on the deepest level. Music is what binds us all.

No need my friend because Y2k didn't have shit on COVID. Phish has been gearing up to destroy America again for quite some time now and we will in fact party like it's 1999 and then some.

This show was the biggest new years show for a single band in the whole world that night

yes that’s correct, you’re looking at pro shot WIDESCREEN footage of big cypress that will never be released in your lifetime for whatever reason. Oh well, at least we have the vhs jumbotron rip with bad audio

'99 definately had a unique sound. Some of the darkest jams in the catalogue.

7:00 fish chunks it, Trey funks it.

Love to see more and more of the pro-shot making it out by Phish. IMHO, Phish (at the time) really could slide into a slow groove and communicate pace and texture. I truly think it's Page that makes this jam though. Trey is trying to hide behind Page the whole time, and Page is just willing to take it slow.
I don't think this jam is "dark" per se, because there is no real dissonance or lack of resolution to the melody. Just rhythm and groove.

Hey from the future. A huge reason for the 99 sound is Page. He was able to fill the void Trey was leaving to build layers and ambience. Page’s melodies he contributes are integral. I don’t think he hides behind Page as much as is allowing him to lead a bit. Page was on some other shit in 99 and continues to be now with his increased sounds and role in 3.0

@puffnstuff0210 IMHO, it's what Trey is doing at 3:10 on. At 3:29, he's taken his hands off the guitar. I personally think he wants Page to step up the melody and tempo of the groove. Finally at 4:05, Fishman and Mike pick it up and set the pace and Trey seems almost forced back into the melody part. Trey used to drop his guitar and play his little kit in order to avoid being the "melody maker" in the group. Hiding musically on stage. Either way it looks like we both like it. Enjoy

That's because this wasn't from the afternoon set - it was an after midnight reprise of sorts that they played after Drowned, late in the midnight set.

Nobody thought they'd ever reach this level again, but the human race didn't bet on a lot of things. Cypress 2 is just around the corner.

I've gotten pretty much everything through Phish's Vimeo channel. For some reason they had a lot of good footage up on vimeo but not on TH-cam. That's why I chose to put these up. Not to mention they've started taking some of them down on Vimeo.

to say this is some of there darker stuff? really? This is is there most amazing stuff and this jam in paticular was a seminal moment for me seeing Phish, it cant be described except to say this jam is some of the most progressive shit ive heard them play...and to mention 99 as a footnote is ridiculous.it was there best year hands down...

  • @thejustineaster

@slowhand633 i've often wondered the same thing myself. i'm pretty sure it's the tone or the volume, maybe switching between both. he's always had a habit of messing with either/or to fit the feel of the jam.

    • @adamdavidoff1500

This jam came later in the night. The After Midnight you have in your library (or so I assume) closed the first set around 6:30 pm. This is the jam out of a sick Drowned and unfolded around 4:00 am of the best concert in the history or rock & roll...
