I got the game with beyond light and have not experienced any of this. The story for me was "you've awoken in a junkyard and some floating orb says your a hero. Let's go kill stuff, maybe on the moon? And there was a guy named cayde but he's dead and we're all reeealy sad about it. You missed one hell of a fight..."
The game is treating it as if you awoken in the current season. D2 base story can't even be played anymore. You can play legacy of the dlc but it's optional. The game has been out for 4 years now it's not really probable for it to put you through the base story and the story of all the dlcs so it just puts you in present time as a new guardian. I experienced this when I made a second account to play. Basically, you are a new guardian in the current season and you will just learn about things that have happened in the past rather than playing out of date content.
Just got back into destiny 2 after stopping in year 1 or when that 1st dlc came out. A lot had changed and that’s okay with me. Thing is that I really didn’t know what happened after year 1 in terms of story wise. This video helped me understand, thanks!

The campaign to me is just the season 15 quests, is there not a way to play from the beginning? I miss the original Destiny 2 story. Now everything is just streamlined to Beyond Light or very briefly exploring the Costmodrone (if playing without DLC.) The entire story of D2 is gone now. I guess they had to get rid of it just like they did Cayde-6.
I hate that they removed the Red War, they should have definitely gone for Destiny 3 with improved animations and start beyond light or just make a new story and then make Beyond Light the DLC Expansion for D3. Now that even more DLCs are set to come, this game is a mess. It’s not just any MMO RPG game like RuneScape. I’m a New Light player and damn I hate that my first experience with Cayde was also the last.
