Back when I used to work for a local LHS it was a common issue - the savage 2-speed was notorious for shifting way too early at the factory setting, basically leaving you with second gear all the time, better to wind the screw in 2 turns and see...... in the vid, was going to comment on the dodgy HPI plastic tuned pipe and then saw the result 😂 as you probably know Kev, The only supercharger that works on a two-stroke is a good tuned pipe! Keep Nitro Alive! It offends the sheep!

This is why i love my tnx 5.2r. Never had any Problems with the gearbox, engines are absolutly powerfull and you can start it with a drill. Still after 20 Years this thing runs great
I've got an old SS 4.6 savage that's been sitting in a cupboard for 12 years. After seeing this I think I'll be heading down the LHS on Saturday morning and picking up some fuel, tube, glow plugs, maybe a hump pack and getting the old girl running again Cheers Kev
you get it going? i recently got my 2013 model back running... mine fired right up with some fresh nitro and a heat gun( motor was pretty tight, it is very little time on it though)
Really love seeing the Nitro fun, especially when they are running well. The smell and sounds are just not the same with electrics, and with a fresh bottle of fuel you have basically infinite runtime unlike waiting for batteries to charge. Though you do have more cleanup afterwards if you want them to last. Since you have both it'd be awesome to see a side by side with the Traxxas Revo 3.3 and your thoughts on both of them.
Gotta love a good running nitro, especially the runtime. 30 minutes is just getting warmed up when it comes to nitro, 30 minutes you are changing out batteries in an electric.
Watching you run Nitro cars shows very clearly how much throttle control you use. It can be heard clearly. It’s impossible to pick up with the electric RCs. Very educational
still have my savage from 2004 . best thing i did was novarossi .28-8 , RD LOGICS 61850 pipe and with 3 speed . i just put lx shocks bypass , powerhobby servo , and fling king 2-6x3-8 tires . best r/c ever made !!
Love the way that El Camino body turned out! Glad you cut out room for the engine cage rather than ditching it. I think it looks better with the cage showing, like a full size monster truck.
If it's a headache for Kev, it's way too much of a hassle for me. Love gas, but I'll stick with electric. Appreciate that you show all the work that goes into it.
She's running great! 2 spd is awesome, love it when it drops into high gear. Always rewarding when it all comes together. Man can you wheel the savage with authority. Can't wait for more. We should send you a ERCM (extreme rc mods) pipe for her. Hand made here in Alberta Canada, Stainless steel, skookum and legitimate performance adder. Engine is so much happier when running it.
I have a old school savage x with a LRP .32 spec 4 engine in it with a 3 speed gear box . It's all run in and shifting all 3 gears perfect . Wheelies through gears .....They are great fun but a lot a messing around 😂

I used to work on Savages in 2010-2014 for a Racing Hobby shop. The HPI engines were consistently the most finicky shits ever… In both the trucks and the road cars.
Kev, the idle mixture setting is close, lower the idle speed slightly, then lean the idle mixture slightly, keep lowering the idle speed, that’s the key! Then it won’t have that awkward high idle sound

Get a tuned exhaust for it. When tuning you should always see smoke but not to much smoke it's a fine line to get it right, you will get it right 1 day, I still have my savage 25 the first 1 that was released awesome fun they are
Hey Kevin! I think you should really try to find a losi muggy! It’s really good and tough, and with the upgraded diffs, it can take 8s pretty easily, but as a nitro it’s an absolute blast
Since the body has exhaust's on the side, why not fab up something to make the exhaust go through the side exits, would make it look amazing in my opinion.
Kevin have you ever had a nitro vehicle with an actual supercharger on it? About 10 years ago I had a Losi LST 2 that I put 2 engines on and each one had its own belt driven supercharger. S.O.B. Was extremely fast.
Fantastic Kev! You'll get the tune right in time. Just remember that the high speed needle controls the TOTAL flow of fuel into the engine and not just top end power. If you richen or lean it out, the same will happen for the low speed needle, at which it will need a readjust. Using a temp gun will help loads as well. I tune for a max temp of 260F. Any more than that, I richen it up for engine longevity. A good rule of thumb which worked for me is that after you get your high speed needle set, you can lean the low speed needle in 1/8th turns and after each turn you pinch the carb fuel line until the engine takes about 3 seconds to cut out. The other method I follow is to put the vehicle on a box so it can free spin the wheels. With the engine running and fully warmed up, set your idle speed. Let it idle for 5 seconds and floor it. If it hesitates or bogs, lean it out. You want it to be on the richer side without bogging down or causing hesitation. I have found that this is the "cool down" fuel that helps lower engine temps after constant full throttle pulls. Don't give up !
You could probably lean it out a bit more seeing plenty of smoke, been years since I tuned a nitro but if I remember right the 2 speeds don't like shift properly when it's rich
I've got an ancient HPI Savage 25. It's got the OG two speed that was a bitch to tune, but a different design. If I remember correct it has a kind of centrifugal pawl arrangement that worked whenever it wanted to. But when it did that truck was a beast! And yeah, one of my first upgrades was a two-piece alloy spur!
You should try and find the savage truckzilla kit from hot bodies it had an extended chassis and a helicopter motor in it with some serious power. I had one a long time ago. So much fun

i like my nitro savage X it runs great now shifts and i put a lot of new accessories on it including the exhaust and spur gear now i think i will change the body style. great video can’t wait for mor great job Kevin.
thing jumps like a dream, seems really well balanced.....as for the trans, not sure why manufacturers don't use a planetary gear like in a drill. Those things take much more of a beating than any R/C will. (I've actually used cordless drill motors and trans in power systems for tambours in wall units).
Hey kev nice video!! i love hpi savages i have a hpi savage 25 with 3 speed transmission and LRP zr28 spec 4 engine. I think your engine its run to rich. Buy a thermometer and check the engine after fire up. In nitro engine the temperature must be 120-130 C maximum and if you want too run safely the temperature must be 110 C maximum. so if the temperature of the engine is very high set the fuel mixture to Richer. if the temperature is very low set the fuel mixture Leaner. I hope I helped you with how to tune his engines. looking forward to the next video!!

I always had issues with the 2 speed trans on mine as well, the 3 speed trans upgrade fixed that problem and made it faster as well

I got mine to shift right after setting it for the first time! 🎉 haven’t had problems since, but mine was stuck in first lol 😂
