@Grumpy Man I have 1900s terraced house and my loft joists are only 65mm deep. I want to reinsulate and board over. Could I add shims onto the existing joists to get up to 100mm depth for the first insulation layer, then cross batten onto the shims with 89mm CLS, add further insulation then board over? Cheers

Yes or cross baton twice, good luck

    Hi Grumpy chaps.
My loft has some battens which are screwed vertically from floor joists to either purlins or rafters. I want to shift them out of way to do the storage flooring per your method.
What are these battens for? To minimise deflection? If I put the c16,s in perpendicular with the OSB boards on top, will this prevent deflection?
    Appreciate your advice.

All I can say is make sure that they are not structural before you remove anything, if they are just for spacing then fine but be very careful what you remove in a loft, good luck !

Hi my loft is pretty much like this and insulation looks the same. Would you renew the insulation as its a very old house before boarding it out? And with raseing it would it be able to hold a bed?

The insulation should be ok unless contaminated or damp, I wouldn't really advise putting a bed up there as it's only really designed for storage..

@@MrBish11 do you recommend them raised legs to also to give it extra strength? What size timbers do u normally use to raise it and what would I need to do to be able to put a bed etc. Thanks for your help

@@dannycraven7261 No, I don't recommend any loft leg system, use 89mm cls cross laid, and you would really need a proper conversion for a bed etc, good luck with the project.

@@MrBish11 Do you treated CLS or just untreated will do since it is out of the damp and mostly dry.

@@vasimansari untreated is fine, but if they have a very rare deal on, get treated.

How much would this cost to get done on average? Mine has a water tank so it’s average 3 bed semi minus that and has some boarding but I want it all done like this purely for storage though. Thanks.
