Hi great videos I'm doing a hobby room up in my loft I currently have 4x2 ceiling joists but not much headroom can I get away with 3x2 cross bracing or will it have to be 4x2 and do I need to put them onto wall hangers or just screw them down to the original joists cheers

Great vid, thanks. My loft already has insulation (roughly 15" thick), would i still need to raise the boarding in order to leave a gap? Cheers

We’re looking to use our loft as a spare room when needed in house we’ve just purchased. Could we do this method? Or would it have to have steel or bigger joists bolted to existing ones?? Cheers if anyone could get back to us.

Yea good video. Recently did this in mine before converting. If your house is older and some of the old beams aren't perfectly straight be prepared for some potential ceiling cracks and plaster pops below. The new timbers pull the old ones straight and the pressure can cause cracks. But all good.

Hi I know this is an older video. I'm looking at a flat loft so quite large, just as a space, so no toilet or other reg stuff. I'm interested in the cross bracing, if existing older joists are usually 4x2 or 5x2. Without sliding in new 8x2 along side the old ones to bring it up to spec for an actual live in space, I've seen it being done by gluing a 2x2 or 3x2 on top of the joists and screwing at set spacings passed by architects. Does this counter bracing basically do the same or spread the weight over many joists or is it just to create more space for more insulation?

    Good post

What's holding all the weight of the new beams and flooring? Surely not the original joists?

Do you have loads of cables hidden underneath? What are your thoughts on aerial cables etc being under the flooring?

For any electrical cables that are at the height of the original joists and will be difficult to raise the height of…. What’s the best way to deal with them?
