    I like the detail of Isildur reaching the western bank and only then realizing he had lost the ring. Wow. Much different than what we see in the film.

    Great video! I enjoyed it!
    To tell you the truth, I think Isildur gets a lot of flax. Sure he took the One Ring but at the end of the day, he reminds us that it takes strength to resist evil and courage to know your weakness. I mean, it is overlooked, that Isildur was trying to repent of the wrong that he had done.
    At the end of the day, we are all Isildur, trying to do good in a world with us being imperfect.

    I am curious what would have happened had Elendur survived the battle. Perhaps the kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor would have remained united if Elendur, an adult and hero of the war, had succeeded his father Isildur instead of Valandil who was yet a child and would not garner the same respect from the southern kingdom or even the ability to claim lordship of Arnor for several years.

    • @DarthGandalfYT
      @DarthGandalfYT  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I think they definitely would have remained united. As you pointed out, Elendur was an experienced veteran, but he was also born in Numenor and had spent time in both Gondor and Arnor. And considering he was described as being much like Elendil, he was definitely a capable leader. Unfortunately, Valandil was just a child who had never left Rivendell, so he was never going to be the senior to Meneldil in Gondor.

      @@DarthGandalfYT Interestingly Elendur was also described in looks and also personality to be nearly a one on one image of Aragorn/Elessar. One could maybe say that with Aragorn Elendur got to rule in another life a whole age later.

    Imagine if there was enough time for more numenoreans to flee from numenor before it sank. Even though there were alot of colonists in middle earth it was still a great tragedy that the home island was gone along with all its people and wealth. Arnor might never have fallen if it was more populated and would have been the most powerful and uncontested kingdom in middle earth.

      Dont agree. Arnor was weakend by fighting it self. This would not chance if there were more numenorians. There would only be more dead before angmar would rise against a weak and divided arnor.

    Nice, short but sweet video summary. I like your attention to details that are often overlooked. I knew all this already but I subscribed to your channel because you clearly don't just regurgitate basic knowledge, instead checking in greater scrutiny if something is as it seems e.g you highlighted that whomever orchestrated the attack on Isíldur's company was probably not a Nazgûl, which I appreciate because you're sticking to the fact we do not know who did do it. I would like to believe that a Nazgûl _was_ involved, possibly Angmar or Khamûl.
    However, just as well it may have been some random surviving Black Númenórean captain (maybe something along the lines of a "proto-Mouth of Sauron" aka Mouth of Sauron predecessor?) Suffice it to say that whomever did get the Orcs together to ambush the Dúnedain, must have had the strategic understanding to time, plan and carry out their attack, to be so effective. The wilful desperation of the Orcs to win even if they suffered 6 to 1 loss rates, hurling themselves maniacally at the Arnorians, does seem very "brave" indeed for typically craven Orcs, especially supposedly leaderless ones. I'm imagining that there had to be something more than hate and opportunism driving them; a greater power than them. As far as I'm aware there were not just Misty Mountains Orc rabble there, but veteran Orcs from Mordor which escaped. Obviously some Orcs did survive the war, so that is entirely reasonable.
    If that is true about Mordor Orcs of that era escaping to holdouts to the North (seeing as Gondor did maintain an active and effective watch on Mordor, for centuries to come until pulling back in desperate times of plague and strife) it does sound reasonable in my opinion. It would lend credence to the idea of it _not_ being a Nazgûl leading them behind the scenes, because as much as it sounds logical and befitting of Angmar especially, after Sauron was defeated and his weakened spirit disembodied, the Nazgûl must have been correspondingly weakened badly, recovering for centuries in hiding. The Nazgûl's power waxed and waned with Sauron's power. If he was stronger, so were they; and the same in reverse if he suffered a setback. As slaves to him, they were practically weathervanes and windsocks to his fortunes; you could tell a lot about how Sauron was doing, by how they were doing.
    It's why they got noticeably more dangerous as the War of the Ring continued, as Sauron's power burgeoned gradually. Angmar and all eight other wraiths were fought off by Gandalf the Grey on Weathertop; later on, imbued with additional power from Sauron, the Witch-King had the sheer audacity to threaten a one on one duel with Gandalf the White (still think he'd get stomped by Gandalf the Balrog slayer lol sure he could handle him, totally different leagues imo) But it does show that their power was getting seriously dangerous, even so far as to dare attack a Maia.
    Yet back at the start of the Third Age, so soon after the defeat of Sauron, I think they'd perhaps _literally_ be in no shape or tangible form to fight; practically faded in power to the point of being little better than ghostly shadows of what they already were as wraiths, only still existing because Sauron himself was not fully destroyed due to the survival of the One Ring. In which case, speculating the culprit to be disgruntled and vengeful Orc chieftains and even a very devious Black Númenórean captain from the war, would make more sense. I just prefer the idea of some higher power having the strategic and commanding wherewithal to plan the ambush. It's not beyond particularly clever and devious Orcs to do it, but still; prefer the idea of a very upset Black Númenórean spiting the Dúnedain of Westernesse with one last act of revenge. Other than that, all we could say is that Isíldur and his sons had the misfortune of encountering some particularly cunning and nasty Orcs led by strong chieftains, seizing on an unbelievably lucky opportunity to wipe out the Dúnedain royalty. Almost.
    *edit: P.S - also, although speed and attempted stealth in travel was part of the idea of taking just around 200 men with him (besides his sons, all there being his closest friends and loyal knights and veterans, in a time when Isíldur was consolidating power after the death of his father), I can't help but wonder if even merely a hundred or so more Dúnedain would have carried the day. If only he had more archers. Another thing worth mentioning is that he wanted to form a wedge formation to break through the Orcs and keep going North. The Thangail formation was what he resorted to even while only having 20 archers. Obviously that formation works best with a healthier number of archers. However, the ground was broken and uneven and did not favour the wedge formation at all.

      If a Nazgûl had been directing the orcs, it would have likely sensed the presence of the One Ring (not to mention being able to see Isuldur once he put the ring on), and would have retrieved it after Isuldur was slain.
