In 1961, with a newly minted first driver’s license, I, along with my parents , embarked on a road trip from northern Wisconsin to California. Upon arrival what I saw was beaches filled with young economically displaced midwesterners, victims of a significant recession. They were living in their pickup trucks and enjoying the warm, inviting climate that they had heard so much about. The gold they found in California was life style not employment. This is the foundation on which California was constructed. Even a 16 year old could see this would not end well.
That's a pretty bizarre take. The foundation upon which California was constructed was laid well over a century before your arrival and differed significantly from your Johnny-come-lately experience.

I called into KROQ and personally spoke to Mr Burchim about structural issue with some stairs on my property. I thought I was calling to some shop teacher who didn’t know diddily-Scott about construction. Sure enough I talked to him for about 30 minutes on the issue. So off I go to city planning and they instructed me on how the whole remodel of the staircase would go down. I compared my notes to Mr Burchims and did it all myself, with city planning checking off on the project. I saved me some cash back then, like 30 years ago. And every time I visit that property I’m reminded of that conversation. I’m glad I talked to him and dig his shows and interviews. He’s in his own element cool with life.
When he starts rattling off Simpson part numbers and telling people where to install them it cracks me up. I design all of the structure of the big apartment building going up around Texas. Well, as many as I can get, anyway.
I moved to Texas after living in CA for 35 years. I feel free, and the policies here dont make my blood boil. Most of the policies and laws make sense. Like many, I became intolerant of CA's failures and the increasingly rapid decline. I do miss family, friends, and the weather, though. I hope that people of the state push for change and stop the bleeding. The first step is to get rid of Newsom. I honestly believe that so many people are absolutely sick of Newsom and Democratic policies and will be voting red this upcoming election.
People forget the Democrat's closed the facilities in the 90s where the mentally challenged were able the live , now there on the street, think about it.
Well it was actually President Reagan. He believed “the experts” when they said they could handle the mental illness problem. In reality, the mental health community wanted the money for private treatment instead of those people being under state institution care where they didn’t make any money. It’s was one of two major mistakes Reagan made. The other being illegal immigrant amnesty.
@@larryfine6865Tired leftist talking point about Reagan, especially after 40 years of other politicians being in office who could have addressed the issue and didn't. The bulk of mental institutions in the United States were closed in the 50's and 60's well before Reagan. Also, only federal institutions were ever closed under Reagan, not state institutions and they were defunded as part of an omnibus spending bill. Also, it is illegal to intitutionalize anyone against his or her will in the US. See O'Connor v. Donaldson.

Moderate that leans conservative and a college educator in Kansas. I have students from all over the country and describing this generation as "crate trained" couldnt be more apt. Some of these kids are literally afraid to acknowledge, let alone agree on, what is obviously objective reality. The individuals who seem to want to point that out are often attacked by their peers and they invariably lose social standing on campus. I will say that it seems to have peaked a few years ago and I see more and more logic being injected into conversations and observations every day.
I have the choice and find it difficult to leave. It is absolutely the weather and geography, and what it has enabled. I drove up the coast last weekend to wine tasting and have great meals. I need to replicate that elsewhere before I can commit to fully leaving.
It isn’t just the weather; it’s also the geography. California has majestic mountains - some good for skiing. There are deserts that bloom in the spring with unusually pretty flowers out of their cacti, impressive giant, redwood forests in the northern areas, and many lakes, especially in the northern areas. The state has astonishing cliffs off the Pacific Coast Highway, coasts of different beaches to suit different tastes, colorful flowers and semi tropical plants along the mid and southern coastal areas. There are beautiful national parks, hot springs and even a volcano. You can also find small farms all over, even in the mid size cities; you can always buy fresh produce year round. Large cities of course have their problems - like most large cities throughout the country - but if you explore the rest of the state, there is plenty to see and enjoy. Jobs have been more abundant than many other places. Housing is expensive, but the job pay is higher. It’s not the perfect place, especially when it comes to politics, but no place is 100% perfect.
The weather isn’t even worth it anymore, nor is the beach. I left, and I cannot tell you how many people I know are leaving or planning on doing so. California is social experiment on the taxpayers dime.
California now has only one positive factor and it's overwhelmingly positive. Prop. 13 keeps your property taxes from skyrocketing when we get into a housing bubble. No other state has anything similar. There are several states in the US where you may not be able to afford your property taxes when your house goes up in value. This particularly affects older people on a fixed income.
If property taxes followed home values, easily at least half of people would leave. My home appreciate 5x since I purchased and that’s the main reason I’m not planning moving anywhere in state because prices and taxes.
Thanks for the heads up! Idaho is high on my list of places to flee to. But don't worry, I'm a conservative and won't ruin your great state! @@corey6393

Not all of the homeless are junkies or mentally ill. Many working homeless are living in their cars, old RVs and tents. The housing shortage is a big factor. I voted to recall Newsom and voted for Larry Elder who had a plan to suspend the California Environmental Quality Act to free up developers to build more housing and get the costs down.
I have always liked Adam. It’s obvious he really thinks about his observations and does a great job initiating thoughtful discussion. The polarization effect of differences is definitely spun up with social media. It’s almost like a evolution of human behavior when most of the population can be spoon fed filtered political, events news, conspiracy theories, group think etc. The kids who are between 14-18 today have a really different way they treat social media information, news etc. They definitely question the reality of the information far more than say a 25yr old and definitely have a different way of looking at digital media news social etc than say a 40-70 yr old. Id say they are far less likely to be duped simply because they have been immersed in this new reality and its outcomes their entire life so far. They do question sources of information and look at it with a critical eye more so out of ingrained habit than other generations. You look at all the drama today and the drama queens are pretty much 40yrs and up in age. Definitely brings up the need for our country to consider term limits in our politics and age considerations ie what is too old to be a governing office holder? The gap between differences will definitely increase with social media engineering!! But I suspect the extreme examples like women’s health differences have just about hit the max tolerance for level of extremism in our country. We definitely have bigger external problems we as a country should be looking at vs the crazy extremism drama playing out between states and minority groups within our country today.

That and the Vietnam war have a lot to do with where we are now as well, people have short memories...
True, the non-druggies get put up in shelters, or otherwise try to stay out of sight. The ones you see them on the sidewalks under blankets are the worst. I'd also point out people get addicted to drugs when they have no other hope in life, you look at the poorest places in the country with no jobs and they have the highest drug use and overdoses, etc.
After a few minutes of research, it is apparent that Reagan did NOT close “mental hospitals.” The POTUS does not have this sole authority. Why are we seeing more of this obfuscation of reality recently?
I was homeless years ago and it was definetly by choice and drug related.....I just gave up and didn't care was bottom line This is by far most of the cases for homeless.....tiny % are there because of poor choices and bad circumstances....even back then people would refuse help cuz it meant you had to be clean.......there is always help if you want it in the U.S. Can't convince me otherwise because I lived it, and also got out of it😮

His analogy of the party, it goes both ways. I lived in Utah for years, the safe space there was being a conservative Mormon. Since I didn’t adhere to that, I stopped getting invited to the parties…aka I didn’t get the job promotion, I didn’t get the pay raise, eventually I didn’t have a job. I tend to disagree. The issue of personal freedom, economic freedom, and capitalism versus the Maoist communism of CA, NY, etc, it isn't going to go well--at some point these far apart ideologies will clash, especially as CA continues to sink economically due to exceedingly poor collectivist policy choices.
California will be fine "economically" it certainly wouldn't be allowed to fail. However the middle class will leave and it'll be a state of the rich and the slave class
It's weird that Adam is mixing up electric cars with the left. Those are completely separate issues. I've had a Tesla for 11 years, but I'm a 2A-supporting, Trump-voting, anti-woke conservative. So much talk about people buying electric cars at first. As if that's some big grievance he has about "politics" or is it really just about people? Oftentimes, it's these "Raptor" owners that complain about gas prices the moment they go up, yet they knowily purchased something that just cost more upkeep in general in the first place. I buy and sell cars for living the TRX is the biggest waste of space it barely makes sense at two dollars a gallon makes zero sense at 4 to 5 dollars a gallon people buy those because For the same reason the bald guy buys a Corvette
The one thing about this discussion. I don't like using the word need. No 1 need 1 of those big trucks. That's probably true. However, no one needs a 12000 square foot mansion. With the pool. It can be argued that anything larger than 1200 square feet for a family of 3. Even 4 is what is needed. Everything else is want. No one needs a TH-cam channel to tell them. What they need. As in everything, there is a need and a want for something. We all want something that we don't need. We need shelter, we need food. That's pretty much all we need. Everything else is want
As a Texan, I am always suspicious of these left-wing comics who supposedly have been red-pilled. When he said no one NEEDS a Ford Raptor with 37" tires...this is America and most of what we have is not about a need. No one needs an 85" flat screen TV, 5000 sq. ft house, a Rolex, a Porsche 911, a $5000 suit etc. All of which I bet he owns. I'm a semi-retired Conservative California man who drives a Chevy Spark out of necessity. Funny when I see the thumbnail photo on this feed, because I also own a Chevy Z71 Pickup, however due to gas prices in California, after Biden's "election", I have to do what is financially logical for myself and leave the pickup parked. And no, I do not have flower stickers on my Spark. Newsom is Biden 2.0 and has ruined a fairly decent state. Some 60 years ago, California had a Republican Governor (Ronald Regan), and there were more Conservative thinkers than Democrat voters, here, back then. The change is simple to understand...those Liberals with money moved here and took over. Now the common man here is expected to keep up with those Liberals who came here (from all over the world) who have large bank accounts, they can afford to pay $7 for gas and $5 for bread, and $1.2 million for a home, where the average common citizen cannot. Newsom is spending $billions for a train to connect Fresno and Bakersfield, instead of building reservoirs to hold water when we have winters such as we just had. I'm too old to relocate to a completely different area, and I'm slowly being squeezed out of a state where my family has lived for 12 generations. Not complaining, just saying.
Adam made a good observation about the division on Electric Vehicles and Big Pickup Trucks but I don’t see it in a Versus optics.

If it weren't for the great California weather, I don't understand why anyone who has a choice would want to live in California.
Great food, awesome beaches. Great fishing and hunting. Tons of wilderness and camping .

No other state has anything similar. There are several states in the US where you may not be able to afford your property taxes when your house goes up in value. This particularly affects older people on a fixed income.

You were both right - the mentally ill and drug folks live under the freeway areas, the working poor sleep in their cars which gets harder all the time. I'm an old Caifornian and saw first hand what happened when Reagan closed all the mental hospitals. That and the Vietnam war have a lot to do with where we are now as well, people have short memories...
Always a good idea to mention Ronnie when we discuss the decline of the United States.
I was homeless years ago and it was definetly by choice and drug related.....I just gave up and didn't care was bottom line
This is by far most of the cases for homeless.....tiny % are there because of poor choices and bad circumstances....even back then people would refuse help cuz it meant you had to be clean.......there is always help if you want it in the U.S.

When someone pointed out it can't be unseen. Adam is Hank Hill.
Adam made a good observation about the division on Electric Vehicles and Big Pickup Trucks but I don’t see it in a Versus optics. I see it as a Tax regulation loophole in one of the highest Tax states in the country. People who miss the EV tax rebate capitalizing on the more than 6000lbs vehicle rebate. If you have a 1099 you know this.
Gavin lNewsom is the type of guy who doesn’t believe his own words coming out of his mouth. Oh wait that’s every politician!
Thats why i like Adam still, and despise the sellout Kimmel
This states epa policies are going to put me out of business. I’m 45 years old now and started my business when I was 25. I’ve jumped through every hoop to stay compliant back when CARB’s PERP program was being aggressively enforced in 2006. I sold my old machines and in 2019 downsized down to 1 rig. I’m owner operating now and the new SMOG laws are going to be extremely difficult to comply with, every single problem I have had with my Kenworth T880 has been exclusively due to the emissions equipment that does not work. Constantly downing my truck due to regeneration issues and def pumps and sending units failing leaving me not able to work for weeks at a time every 6 months. The writing on the wall for small businesses like myself is we’re done. We absolutely cannot afford to compete with large corporations that have multiple trucks in their fleets. California does not care about small business.
There was a lot of cheating with the voting scores. News I'm seemed to really be stressing about not being elected, then there was talk of him even having a position for India!!!! Conveniently, he kept his job. We need a better way to have our voting and votes be counted..... honestly and fairly!!!!
Carolla for President!!!
somehow I knew he drives a Land Cruiser....
Bullshit. There are people working full time respectable jobs and having to camp out and live out of their cars. I am a veteran, college, good credit and super healthy. I work 6 effing days a week.
It's very easy not to do drug tests of the homeless we see and continue to call them homeless. Most are indeed drug addicts when you see what they're doing with their lives and how they behave. For your situation, know this; no one gives a s**t about you. (Society doesn't care about men in the slightest, only that they produce) They don't care they you are a veteran, that you went to college (probably a worthless degree), and that you work as often as you say you do. Recognize that only you can raise your standard of living, and to do that you need actual skills people are willing to pay for. Examine what you're doing wrong and work up a plan to upgrade your life. Or not. It's up to you. And remember, no one cares, your success is exclusively up to you.
I used to be that guy living in Cali. Left.
That guy living in Texas did a lot better and retired early. Yeah, it was nice to enjoy the drive to Tahoe or whatever, but I could instantly afford the airfare to go skiing just by moving to Houston. Owned a home in less than three years on my own. Could have done it sooner, but I got out of debt first.
I worked 10 hrs a day 6 days a week at age 65. Moved to Az. where cost of living is 1/4th that of commyfornia.
The majority are still on drugs and mentally ill.
@@mustangracer5124 Exactly. This idea that if you work hard someone owes you something is a con job foisted on the lower classes by craven politicians. If no one will pay you enough to afford shelter in your area, then leave. Or, start a revolution. Or, figure out what you are doing wrong. Those are the choices.
And, BTW, leaving is going to start being regulated. The Left won’t let go of the idea that they can vote themselves free lunches.
All true!!!
