This 2-Stroke Auger Kicked Me Down a Notch

- This Southland 2-Stroke post hole digger was not the success story I was hoping for. It does run, just not well, and it's really too much money to spend to replace the carburetor with the factory original. These cheap and inexpensive augers are not the top notch quality you hope for.

03:37 Maybe it's low compression?

Wear your safety glasses, or you'll shoot your eye out. Try on some gloves. Take off that spark plug boot. Clean your room. Open the windows, those fumes are nasty. Just 'cause I do it, don't think it's the end all, be all solution. There's plenty more ideas out there, I can't take responsibility if you slice off a few fingers after watching my videos. And don't just pour that toxic stuff down the sewer or in the ditch, dispose of waste responsibly. Just be safe, OK?

Stella. Mowerz and Blowerz here. Down through the center of the carb from the top, you’ll see a shiny brass barrel on the throttle mechanism. There is a plastic plug down inside that. Under that plug is the idle mixture screw. Just have to remove that plug and adjust. Great vids!
Thanks for watching. Cheers!
Stella i think you cleaned it well, but i didnt see any carb ajustment screws. Thats all it sounds like it needs. I know you will get it! 😉
In retrospect, I probably should have. Not even sure I realized at the time there is low speed adjustment on the top. Thanks for watching.
You still did a great job on that thing.
Goodness knows I tried. Not a fun machine to work on, especially after being stored poorly for so long. I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
Good to see you back. Some of those rotary carbs have a hidden adjustment screw inside the barrel. If it's there, it will be covered with a plastic cap. I use a heated pick to pull them out. However, it's probably better to just replace the carb. Harbor Freight sells a very similar auger. It has the Predator Engine. Would like to hear what the outcome is.
They guy just wanted to dig three holes and not spend any more $$. 1/2 choke got him his 3 holes. Thanks for watching!
@@Bigguy_33 I agree! LOL
After fixing so many walbro multi vacuum passage carbs, i discovered these variable jets carbs and one needle does it all very similar to old minis and 70's cars. I have had blocked ones and after clean they work first pull and they also seem to run the engine so much smoother?? uncanny and smooth as you move throttle. The Chinese ones have a main jet on the side you can adjust plus the on top idle mixture screw too but that usually is pretty close and when you adjust the main, it changes the idle slightly anyway. Love those carbs.
Dang it - that compressor! 😂
I know. Right?
Good one Stella - shows just how much damage those little two-strokes take when not stored right.
Frustrating little machines for sure. Cheers Claus!
Fantastic job on the carburetor. 😊 but you know how it is when they are tired .they will let you know 😊 thanks for sharing 👍
So true!
Great video Again!!! Nice to see you again too!! Stay well and safe!! Happy Holidays 🧑🏻🎄
Thank you! Cheers!
The first thing I do when working on a two cycle engine is removing the spark plug and the muffler to see if it's scored because you can do a lot of work on something to later find out that the engine is no good.
It's like putting a band aid on a concussion.
I do too... sometimes. Thanks for watching.
Great instructional videos, a pleasure to watch.
Glad you enjoyed it. I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
I use hot soapy water to clean the tank. That works great!
That's a good idea!
You tried Stella, can’t do much more than that.
Thanks for watching Al. Cheers!
Stella, I can’t believe this coincidence. The machine I’m working on right now is an Echo PB-251 leaf blower and this is my very first time seeing the same kind of carb with a valve instead of throttle plate! It does have a very tiny flathead screw set deeply inside a brass port that needs an eyeglasses screwdriver to adjust. I’m guessing it’s a Low speed mixture adjustment. Maybe I’ll find out when I get the carb kit in and put it back together later this week.
I run the ultrasonic for two 30-minute cycles every time. Probably overkill, but easier than not doing it long enough and finding out the carb is still not performing as expected.
Indeed that is a low speed adjustment. It likely has a plastic anti-tamper plug in there. Most people heat up a tiny screw driver and pull it out. Thanks for watching!
Planet Fitness could have a row of those and charge extra to use the new exercise equipment. I pretty much gave up trying to do any good with the 2 cycle stuff, especially cheap weed trimmers.
LOL! I'd like to say no to the cheap stuff, but it's great fodder for video content. I appreciate you watching.
Great video
Great vid as always Stella. XX
Thank you!! 😊
Thank you for such wonderful content.
I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
You remembered the kill switch before working at it for 10 minutes. YEAH Great old Chicogo type music on the ball bearing fast forward. I am happy you replaced the fuel lines. One little leak witll stop suction. I bet that in an hour of use this machine may straighen it out. I had one machine that came in that had a white tip on the electrode of the plug (lean condition) and black ring on the edge of it (from being choked too much. I thought "not possibe" Sometimes you just can't beat that issue.
I agree with you on this one, Bruce. Sometimes the machine has to run for a while to clear off one bit of varnish deep inside. Either that or, in this case, the low speed mixture screw needed turning out a hair. Live and learn.
LOL, I've missed the kill switch too many times. Thanks for watching!
0:13 dang wind
I've since gotten a better mic... if only I can remember to turn it on. :)
@@TheLawnmowerLadyI was commenting on your paper towel blowing away as you were describing the equipment.
Great Video!
Thanks!
👍👍👍.Thank you
Welcome 👍
It was a nice try , same as i would have done going thru the carb and replacing the diaphragms as needed hopefully maybe a adjustment If it hasnt been done already ? Love the content allen i mean stella 😊
Cheers John! I appreciate you watching.
@@TheLawnmowerLady your welcome 🔧
Superb video Stella, you done your best on this one, they are dangerous machines anyway hurt you if you hit a stone 🤕
I know Nev. Those little beasts would pull me right over if I hit a root or rock. I appreciate you watching.
7:07 nice beat!
I appreciate you watching Mr Tom!
Stella did you do any carburetor adjustments before calling for a new carb?
In retrospect that may have helped. The guy just wanted to dig 3 holes and get rid of the auger.
A lot of small engine mechanics say when you have a mystery machine just use mystery oil LOL not us and i know you will figure this one out. Did they get the replacement carb?
Nope! In the end, he only wanted it to work for 3 holes, and he was gonna donate the machine. 1/2 choke and end of story...
Try using Apple cider vinegar to clean your rusty fuel tanks.
That works too, though I get better results tossing it in my clothes dryer: th-cam.com/video/1QnjOSLR7E0/w-d-xo.html I will use vinegar to rinse afterwards. Thanks for watching.
I had one like it a plug failed on 20 th hole if I remember right
Ngk and used the heck out of it
Torch plug? Thanks for watching!
That carb aftermarket is 12$
Hi Stella, did you get any tornado’s yesterday? Have a good week. Rick
We were lucky yesterday Rick, several funnel clouds spotted about 3 miles from my house. White knuckles all day long for me. Thanks for watching.
@@TheLawnmowerLady Forgot those storms were close to you. All we got on our side of the interstate was some rain and about 10 minutes of wind when the front came through about 11:30.

Dirty gas 😮
It was pretty bad. That fuel filter didn't help either.
