    the outro lyric :
    SG and RM’s spoken dialogue, employing the drawling satoori (dialect) of SUGA’s hometown Daegu
    SG: Hey, do you know ‘respect’?
    RM: No, I don’t
    SG: Me neither
    RM: Why’s it so difficult?
    SG: To admire!
    RM: Are they telling us to re-spect? I don’t know -
    SG: To have basic regard!
    RM: Hu-uh?
    SG: To have basic regard!
    RM: To admire!
    SG: Well, wouldn’t it be these things ..
    RM: English is hard
    SG: Yeah, I know right ..

    They recorded this song in a couple of minutes and was a one take. It was literally Suga and RM throwing lines off of each other.

    I love this song for the fact that they’re discussing how people just say “respect” without really meaning it or understanding it these days, but also for what suga was talking abt in his verse.
    He’s pointing out that yes people say they respect BTS bc they’ve done so many inconceivable things (which they don’t always feel they deserve bc they’re humble kings) while also pointing out that some of the people that are saying they respect BTS (in the industry and in the k-hip hop community) don’t actually mean it and will say it to their face while talking sht abt them behind their backs.
    Suga says he respects them (bc that’s just the kinda guy he is) but he also says he knows they don’t actually respect him so they might as well not even say it.
    Man, when you really know how much hate they got from the underground/Korean hip hop scene for becoming idols it makes so much more sense bc they really do still hate on BTS for how successful they became even after saying they would never amount to anything and cursing RM and Suga for leaving underground.

  • @zoeelovee2
    @zoeelovee2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +228

    The end of the song is them joking around kinda but the translation is this:
    "Aye, do ya know what respect is?"
    "I don't know, hyungnim,"
    "I don't know either,"
    "Why is respect this hard?"
    "'Respect', well, is to look again, I don't know,"
    "'Respect', what?"
    "'Respect'!"
    "'Admiration'!"
    "I think those are respect, I'd come to think of that,"
    "English is hard,"
    "I know right?"
    Also Yoongi is using satoori here or dialect speak a little bit which is like an accent but they often have words associated with the area kinda like how the South has “yall” so at the beginning he says 마 which is unique to where he’s from and it means like HEY or AYE or like a quick shouting to get someone’s attention.

    Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but there's the double meaning of 'Respect' and 'Re-spect', as in 're- inspect' (re-look) what you are looking up to, or respecting. As mentioned in the lyrics, when you can find flaws after constantly evaluating something or someone, but you still hold them in high regard despite those flaws, then that is true respect.

  • @Cookie_moonlove
    @Cookie_moonlove 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    One of the worst things is when you see people threatening someone saying "You should respect me, show me respect" etc., if you need to threaten someone what you are receiving is not respect, that means you don't have their respect, that is like threatening someone to give you their stuff and then say that they gave you a birthday present and not that you robbed them.
    Respect is something you earn.

    the line ' respet i respect you applause to that friend wo smiles and curses at the same time" at 4:57 was mistranslated its actually : " Respect, I respect you Applause to that friend who is speaking ill while smiling" basically hes talking about celebrities or bts members ex friends who were saying they respect bts but then talking shit behind their backs.
    last year many of the members told armys at different times that they cut off a lot of friends cause they realized people were using them or were hoping for their failure behind their backs while being nice to their faces.
    i remember jimin talking about it during festa, suga mentioned it on one of his live streams, jin mentioned he doesnt have many friends outside of bts anymore and V told armys on weverse.
    RM and Suga also had this conversation about respect while they were drunk and decided to make a song out of it.
    its kinda sad but also the reality of many celebrities.

  • @shaylablueangel
    @shaylablueangel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    You guys were so right in RM’s, then you talked about giving respect just because a person is older, or parents etc.... But in Suga’s verse, he states that even though you haven’t earned the respect, (something given to someone because of a good thing, or talent, or kindness) he is still going to respect you. Basically saying that, the “respect” is a way of shutting down the hate. If someone is disrespectful to you, and your disrespectful to them, it’s just gonna keep going in a circle, you aren’t gonna get anywhere. When someone is rude to you, don’t play into it, they will be the ones looking stupid because you won’t engage in their disrespect. I’m not going to stoop down to your level, because in the long run, I have to be happy with myself and my conscience. That takes a lot of self control.

  • @iamxhakelyn09
    @iamxhakelyn09 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    That is so true. BTS do not just put out a song that has a good melody but every song has a deeper meaning. Not everyone understands that because not everyone tries to really get into what their songs really mean. Main reason why the fan base is so huge and there are fans from different walks of life. Because at some point you will be able to relate to their music. Most ARMYs became fans because of how they relate to a certain song. We believe that we didn’t find the boys, but their music found us, when we needed it the most. Of course, the boys being adorable and humble is also a plus.
    I like the way you really dissect the meaning of the song and the perspective you put into it. Hopefully, you will react to more BTS contents. Thanks a lot for appreciating the hardwork of BTS. More power to your channel. 💜💜💜

    I am retired now, but I used to work in a local government office (Australia) where the CEO was a bully. Lots of staff were afraid of him but I had been watching him for a while to work him out. He got no respect from me. He even came to the office with a bad cold runny nose etc., tried to come into my office and I put my index fingers up making a cross and told him to get out LOL and he did. I told not asked him to keep his cold away from me. This happened over 20 years ago but I still remember. He did many other things which did not earn him respect as well.
    Great commentary guys!

    I admire the way BTS members are very honest about their vulnerabilities and also ignorance, they are not afraid to say that they don't know.
    And this song is even more meaningful in Korean society because their country is based on Confusius, one of the base of it is filial piety, which is respect for your parents and the elderly. In the South Korean society, it's such a problem as well because older people abuse their authority either at home, school, or workplace. If you are older, immediately you expect to be respected without doing anything to earn it. It's really toxic.

    Giving and earning respect is something that we can all relate to, but this is more interesting when you realize that BTS are Korean/East Asian and respect and paying respect is different from how it is viewed in the West. There's a strict hierarchy in Korean society as far as age and seniority goes, and respect is expected to be given to those older than you and who are your "seniors" when it comes to work and business. It is even incorporated in their language that you must use formal language when speaking to those older than you and can only speak casually to those your age or younger. There's a lot of layers to BTS' music.

Obligation says, be polite to those around you whereas respect should be, I treat you well, I treat others well therefore I earn your respect and possibly you may want to emulate me. To me, that's respect. 😁

    Oh! And I recomend you BTS's 'Dope' because Shmo have a cap with that word haha

    Yes I follow you guys on the respect topic. It is a huge controversy in my family. Because I was raised on old morals of respecting your elders no matter what. But it was something that I didn't feel was fair. So I raised my children that respect is earned. To receive respect you must also give it. No Matter the age or status. My parents and siblings however disagree with the morals and lessons in values that I have taught my children.

    Actually RESPECT is hard to do and at the same time it's easy to give to someone who deserve it. It's hard to respect someone just because of their age or something when they didn't even give reasons to make you respect them, they thought being adult or older is enough to gain respect and it's no no. I love this song so much because what they say is what we always forget, what is respect or who deserve it.
