1965 Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint - 6 Minute Drive

  • A short easy drive in a cosmetically worn out Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint with solid mechanicals. The 1962-1966 2600 Sprints and Berlinas were not a sales success for Alfa Romeo, it was a large 'Flagship' model. With Alfa's last production straight six engine, it was also comparatively costly. The Spider sold better, but still: For the price, customers found it much more sensible to get the performance they wanted from the smaller highly economical models Alfa offered elsewhere in their line-up. So they are rare and costly to procure parts for. But if you want an Alfa coupe that will seat four passengers, this is the model to try.

That's a very beautiful car! I remember about 20 years ago the owner of an Alfa Romeo had one which had sat about 15 years without running, he changed the spark plugs cranked it for about 5 seconds and it ran!

The engine is solid on this car, and yes, the cosmetics show its age nicely. I found the 2600 to be very different in behavior from the 4cyl 2000 GTV's and Alfetta's. The 2600 is much more a "touring" car, larger and softer suspension.. Not as light and "sporting" as the more common smaller, nimble Alfa models. Therefore I think most people associate Alfa with light, nimble, little 4cylinders and are disappointed by the 2600 because it was made for a different style of driving... Cheers!

Thanks! It's a very comfortable and stable car to drive. And the styling is indeed very attractive. Giugiaro did a great job on it.

Never forget always add 1% good smokefree Api TC two stroke oil to the fuel when using modern ultra dry aggressive ethanolized pump fuels in old clasic cars, in Germany most Alfa and Ferrari drivers do so. This prevents corrosion in tank lines and carbs and lubricates the valves and top piston rings. You can minimize top piston ring wear around 40% when using a top lubricant, also two stroke oil contains anti vapor lock additives and sodium that lubricates the exhaust valves stems when using unleaded fuels on engines constructed for

Haffschlappe if you live in the US drive out into the county and find a station that sells farm gas. Its unleaded without ethanol. It’s pretty easy to find if you live near any farming

DAVID ALTON Thanks for that story.. what unusual behavior for a caring owner! Maybe to him it’s “just an old Alfa”? When I test drove this car, I inquired (enquired?) about the engine’s service history. It had a recent complete overhaul, and it did run very nicely. The seller told me the overhaul cost as much as the car.. around US$12,000 if I recall correctly. I talked with the shop who overhauled it.. poor compression forced the overhaul. They confirmed it’s easy to burn the rear cylinder, and expensive.. apparently parts for the straight 6’s are scarce. Cheers!

Right suggest: but two stroke syntetic high performances oil with booster octane increaser (bardhal is the best) between 0,25 and 0,5% is enough; the same strategy for bosh and kugelfischer mecanical injetion pumps (BMW tii, Mercedes benz class S Einspitz, lancia flavia .....)

Can you help me please I Need your advice
I have 2 cars infront of me both are need complete restoration
1- same in the video Alfa Romeo 2600 1963 sprint
    2- Alfa Romeo gtv 2000 1972
What will be more valuable and more attractive.
    Spare parts availability

Hello Motaz, thank you! I am glad you enjoy my videos.
Both of those Alfa Romeos are about equally valuable. Around US$30,000 to US$40,000 when they have been fully restored. Of course, there are details that can make a difference in price; How original are they (original steering wheel, original rims and if they have original Alfa Romeo tool kit, jack, service records, etc).
The 1962 Alfa 2600 Sprint will be more difficult and costly to restore to perfect condition. It was produced in fewer numbers. It has an inline 6 cylinder engine that has expensive parts, and there are not many spare parts available to restore it. These Alfa's were not raced, so there aren't any kits to improve its handling or performance.
Historically the Alfa 2600 Sprint was a car that was bigger and more comfortable than previous Alfas, but because of those two factors, it wasn't as sporty and didn't handle as well as Alfa's prior models. For this reason it was not popular. They are lovely to look at, but a little boring to drive.
1972 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000 is a very very popular model and there are many sources for body parts, engine parts, transmission, steering, suspension, interior trim, etc. This Alfa was very successful as a race car, and there are many source for high performance parts if you want to modify this Alfa Romeo for racing, or even if you want to just improve handling or braking for normal driving.
Historically this Alfa was the perfect blend of price, performance and style. It was a very big success. They are very nice to look at and very fun to drive.
I hope this is useful information for you. I am happy to answer any questions you have.
Where are you located? .. in the Middle East? There are excellent parts sources online, in Europe, Japan, and the US.
      Cheers,
      - Art

I remember looking at one with my father over 20 years ago. It had a similar colour to this one, just a tad darker and it was in a bad state of affairs being a non runner. The car had the desirable Borrani wire wheels but they were in bad shape as well. I still have a photo of it from 1990. The owner wanted too much for the car like Aus $14K . Eventually I saw the car advertised in motoring magazines ten years later but for much less money, by then the car was only good for parts.

    • @65SATisfaction
      @65SATisfaction  9 ปีที่แล้ว

MrStoneycool69 Thanks for sharing your history with these. Did you or your father ever own one? These certainly are very attractive cars, and personally I feel the cast iron 4C model 2000 Sprint is even more beautiful; it lacks the fake hood scoop embellish. But alas, these particular Alfa's seem very hard to justify buying from a value and cost-to-maintain-or-restore vs performance standpoint. The power and handling just isn't there, and it was never meant to be - I understand the Sprint 2600s were intentionally larger and softer sprung "Touring" cars. As such, the 2000 model commands less value, but in my opinion becomes more viable as a purchase for its sheer beauty, performance be damned.

No, my father owned a MG Magnette and a Triumph 2500, it was myself that was interested in these cars especially the 105 series. I was trying to coax my father into doing a restoration on something special, It was just by chance a guy we knew was working in a timber yard saw the car sitting out in the open. He found out it was owned by one of the engineers who owned the car and took a photo of it.(I still have this photo today) This is when I became interested in this model. I didn't know at the time that Alfa had built a bigger version of the "105" and was impressed with the twin cam six.

The problem with humans is we are not perfect. We do not act, think, drive, hold the steering wheel, or double-clutch perfectly. Cars aren’t perfect either. Imperfect clutch adjustment, imperfect gear synchros, imperfect throttle and idle adjustments. Maybe some day you will find the perfection you seek. You will not find it here.
Your comment offers only criticism of a normal human condition and narrow-mindedly focuses on Americans. Your comment does not help, or offer advice to anyone.

@@65SATisfaction no te enfades. Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned
from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the
Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by
reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated
central gas station per city or county. Now they even want to slow down
all the gas pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From
2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as
exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox
oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no
investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even
created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. Called Bundesabgasbespaßungsverordnung :-(
