    Chip I sure do appreciate you taking the time to make and share this video. You gave me the encouragement to fix mine 77 ford. I didn’t have the tool, so I took a punch and marked the spanner nut and took a flat punch and tapped it loose. I replaced the seals and it’s ready go go back in. Thanks again Tom

      I'm glad it was able to help you. I would have used a punch too if I didn't have access to a machine shop to make the tool. I figured I'd probably catch heck from someone if I used a punch in the video. 😅 I enjoyed putting these videos together.

    I had 2 steering gears and the input seal was leaking on both. Before I watched the video I pulled the input end apart and dropped all the balls in the bottom. Watched the video and decided on the other box I'd try to replace the input seal without dis-assembly, and it worked great! All I did was remove the coupling for the steering shaft and popped out the seal and dust seal and put new in. Was a little of a challenge but saved me a ton of time. I appreciate the video!

      Dropping the balls isn't the end of the world. Did you ever put the other one back together? It's not a difficult procedure.

    Looks very similar to the 1980 up version. Only real difference is the later ones have a shorter sector shaft. I wasn't quite sure how to deal with that 4 spoke nut until seeing this. Thanks for sharing.

      69 Mach1 Fanatic Thanks! I'm glad it helped. I try to get the camera out anytime​ I'm doing something that's not so common. We've got to keep those good old Fords going. I just lost compression on cylinder #3 on my truck and am getting ready to pull the engine to rebuild it.

      Yeah mines got a 360 that's getting a little tired, probably going to swap in a big Windsor in have laying around along with a C4.

      Sounds like fun! Mine has the 360 in it too. I'm planning on having a valve job done on the heads and put a new set of rings, bearings, and a high volume oil pump in it. I also want to swap out the C6 for a T19 4-speed.

      Hi Randy, thanks for checking on me. The short story is yes, I'm doing pretty well. The long version is that a lot of circumstances changed. I changed jobs, then I was introduced to someone and we eventually got married. Somewhere in the middle of that I realized she might not like living in a house that has been owned by 2 different bachelors over a timespan of 60 years, so I've been busy remodeling for the past few years. I don't feel comfortable posting videos on anything to do with house remodeling, because I've heard of other youtubers having trouble with that.
      I have been finishing up a 3 point lift for the back of my Farmall BN tractor. I think I mentioned a little about it in the video about converting from magneto to ignition coil. I'll have to wrap it up and make a video of the 3 point in operation. I guess I'm pretty distracted nowadays 😅

    Thanks for the upload. I have the same steering box on my F100 and I am just about to rebuild it. Question: were there no teflon rings on the valve sleeve or inside the worm and valve assembly (27:23 in the video)?

      It's been a while. I don't remember it having any Teflon rings. The only rings I remember were the ones on the piston.
      My steering was working fine, it was only leaking fluid out of the input shaft so I tried to be delicate with the rest so I wouldn't have to replace anything else.

    Hi Chip, great video, thanks. i have a question, but i'm not computer savvy and don't now how to go about it! You showed how to align the center tooth of the three teeth on the imput and the center tooth on the sector shaft. can it be assembled if they are not aligned ? I purchased a reman st. gear box . Now remounted ! i centered the pitman arm with wheels set straight ahead. Yet the ball joint and pitman arm are about 2" apart. I can only assemble if steering is turned to one side. It has been suggested to grind the flat on the pitman arm off , allowing only spline to remain. Then i can set the pitman arm in any position. Am i doing something wrong. Or was the shaft reassembled wrong? PLEASE HELP, Mark

      Hi, looking back, I don't think it is possible to assemble it one tooth off. If it is possible, you won't be able to turn your steering wheel as many revolutions as normal. Do you still have the old gearbox to compare? I wouldn't want to grind those flats off either...it would work though

    Great video, watched the full thing and took extensive notes throughout, I made my own spanner wrench and I'm ready to dive into the rebuild, adjusting the screw at the end seemed a bit confusing, is that how you did it? If so where did you put the in/lb torque wrench? Any more info or a link to that adjustment guide would be appreciated. Thanks for the great vid!

      Brandon Marion I didn't know where to mount the torque wrench on my spanner wrench so I just tightened the nut back to the same location. There was a little set screw to keep the nut from turning so I looked through the hole with the set screw out while I was tightening the nut. When the marks from the set screw lined up in the hole I called it good and put the set screw back in to lock the nut in place. I hope this makes it a little more clear as to what I did. I didn't know the distance from the center of the nut to the point that the torque wrench would have attached to it and that would have had an effect on the accuracy. I also didn't have an inch/lb torque wrench.

      You probably want something high zinc because that likely has flat tappet cam. A lot of folks run Rotella T4.

    you can buy a reman for around 100 bucks

      Yeah, sure... see th-cam.com/video/aVSxARrXpNY/w-d-xo.html for an example of the typical quality of a "reman", i.e. pressure seal in backwards & dust seal missing, so a few months after doing it the first time (or paying to have it done), the gear box has to be pulled and new seal installed again. As the adage goes, "If you want something done right..."

      I sell parts for a living. I see all sorts of junk get passed off as cores and finished reman units. If i had a good rebuildable core, there is absolutely no way I'd throw it away and hope by some slim chance that I get a decent reman. No, thanks. I'll rebuild it myself. Even if rebuild kits were double the cost of a reman. It's not that hard, and totally worth it.
