Another good thing about Clavileño is that since the ability works on Vampires that aren't Demons, it doesn't work on Changelings. So you have to use real Vampires and the Goldfish crew can't target you for running changelings Tomer!
Jason Rainville's article on Becket Brass's new card (and how he used his mother likeness) makes her new card just extra lovely. I feel like creative decided to let her Eternalize pirates because of it too and it's a commander I will definitely brew for brawl despite knowing it won't be a good one just because of the feels.

I think one thing Tomer may have over looked is that the new Admiral Brass is meant to be very synergistic with the Explore ability and Map tokens. Ixalan as a whole less of a focus on treasure this go-round, but a bigger emphasis on explore and one of the main aspects of explore is that you can choose to put cards into your graveyard. With Brass being able to help recover the pirates you've "lost" to explore she has a pretty cool space to play in. And it might just be me, but I think its fine if Pirates move in the direction of a "my graveyard matters" theme, where as rogues have been more a "your graveyard matters"
Good point! Personally though I associate Pirates with treasures, attacking, and theft, the graveyard theme on top may make sense with the new mechanics but I think it waters down the identity too much.
You can use liquid metal torque to make a non artifact double faced card (as long as it isnt a nigh/day warewolf or an mdfc) into an artifact to flip for free... that sounds like a cool side direction.
Mecha-gnomes are due to gnomes being artifact creatures in the early Magic sets (Bottle Gnomes, etc). And, yeah, I wanted a mech-gnome commander so I'll be happy with it even if it did nothing else.
Admiral Brass, Unsinkable addresses one of the biggest weaknesses of Pirates, your pirates are usually pretty small and die easily, her being a recursion outlet that also brings them back as bigger really helps the tribes biggest weakness.
Abuelo is pretty cool as a stax/hatebears Commander. You can hold up his ability and other interaction, then on the end step before your turn you can slow-flicker those pieces away, play normally on your own turn, then on your end step those cards come back to bother everybody else. Its a release valve! Pretty cool.
Malcolm is so sweet!!!! You can proliferate, double strike, what have you, and at a measly 4 counters you get to cheat out the biggest threats from your hand!! Omniscience, Storm of Sauramon, Hullbreaker Horror, or any “blue player is cheating again.”
for Xolatoyac, i’m planning on doing a big mana theme revolving around blinking and copying my commander to get multiple flood counter triggers and untaps per turn and trying to pull cheeky wins with Helix Pinnacle and The Millennium Calendar, and I can’t wait to build the best salamander in magic
Hes not saying the commander isnt unique, hes saying that the game plan is the exact same as every other aristocrat deck (generally speaking). 80% of cards that are in Bartolome go in Teysa, go in Elenda, go in Elas, go in Liesa. The cool thing about tetzin is that we have mycosynth lattice. So any two sided card becomes an artifact that you can flip, there’s also liquid metal coating. And also encroaching mycosynth. Getting an easy jin-gitaxis flip is definitely cool
Addendum after rewatching this: After brewing around both versions of Beckett Brass, I really like the differences between them and totally dig the graveyard-synergies and "dread pirate"-theme of the new version. The old version cared a lot about playing small, evasive pirates while the new version cares about getting big pirates in the yard to reanimate them with haste for immediate benefit. Caring about the yard is a more interesting mechanic than trying to maybe steal something and is much more powerful and less fiddly in general (imho). And pirates as an overall rather weak tribe really needed the help.
Given the art style, I think these cards were based on the Golden Army in Hellboy 2 which were clockwork creations and in Magic, these clockwork type creatures get called Gnomes.
In what world is Kumena, tyrant of orazca better than Hakbal? I don't understand. I feel like hakbal is s teir for sure. Either everyone is 1+1 in you're bord every turn without tapping. Or you never miss a land drop ever again? And you draw cards or put lands down for a bonus, like what so OP.
I think you misread Inti. You don't get a free rummage, you only get to discard in exchange for a +1/+1 counter and an impulse draw that you need to use *that turn*. This means that you'll often just be down a card because you impuls draw an additional land you can't play, an expensive spell you can't cast etc.
One of the reasons I love Tomer is because of the wacky takes he has. I hate enrage as a mechanic and from what I have seen online, most people do as well. I was so relieved that it didn't come back. Most of the time it does nothing unless you REALLY build around it. Hell, the majority of enrage triggers are mediocre at best. Yet, despite all this, Tomer loves them. Never change Tomer. You're awesome. 🤘
I like to think Enrage was made by a BDSM employee at WOTC. I have a Jaheira friend of the forest/Street Urchin with a few Enrage dinos: Silverclad Ferocidons, Polyraptor, Ripjaw Raptor (probably the best Enrage triggers for me). The main idea is make Treasures (sub theme on Clues and Food) and throw money at my problems and make it go away LOL but seriously Enrage is silly when it is built right and this deck can either kill an opponent with a barrage of Treasure or durdle by throwing it at my dinos for value, like anything you got to build for it :P
my favorite thing about the legendary cats in this set is how well they work with the de facto best cat commander, Arahbo, who gives you a free Giant Growth every turn from the command zone :3c
I played a game with a test build of Sovereign Okinec Ahau, and can confirm he’s incredibly nutty. And that was BEFORE I got a copy of Isshin thanks to a Fractured Identity cast. Honestly I’m probably not going to build him- partially because his ability is so strong any opponent playing removal would be a fool not to use it on him, but also because doing all the +1/+1 counter match quickly got exhausting.
Tetzin feels like the sort of commander who might end up getting stronger a few more sets down the line, depending on how long it takes them to print more double-sided artifacts. There aren't too many flip artifacts with big payoffs right now (there are definitely some strong ones, but it's a very limited and unfocused selection to try to build a deck around), but if we get more of them later it could end up just giving you a lot of value. And it's just a fun idea.
Sovereign is awesome to me because it's a strong effect and flexible on how you build him. Voltron works, battlecruiser, wide token pump, or 0/0 tribal can work with him at the helm. Kalonian Hydra in the command zone can be insane.
Saheeli and intruder alarm can go infinte pretty easy with either dockside or good old pergrine drake/great whale effects. There are some various other blue enchantments that also probably help make Saheeli do the thing. Even with out the infintes Izzet has a ton of great etbs that are worth getting again the titans, blue promordial, archomancer, snapcaster .age, dual caster mage, various return target creature to owners hands creatures, displacer kitten Subltey, Fury ect. That can make Saheeli a good value commander. Kitten can also go infinte pretty easily especially when cloned and Saheeli does that.
He also plays nice with holding up interaction, draw-go style. Brago really commits you to combat and mass-blinking, where you can hold up abuelo’s activation until main phase 2 before the end step before your turn. He’s the commander of a very different sort of UW deck with blink synergies.
Of note with Amalia and Wildgrowth Walker in an abzan chain: it either breaks when Amalia hits 20, or you need a way to break it as it will lock the game. Both cards are not optional, meaning that if Amalia through various means avoids hitting exactly 20, the chain goes on infinitely and the game ends. With a way to break it, if you manage to skip 20, you can get down to the exact card in the deck that you want to draw, have arbitrarily large life and have two arbitrarily large creatures.
Unfortunately, Xoloatoyac at 1:20:00 doesn't turn them into just islands, it makes them islands in addition to their other types, so you cant deny your opponents lands :c
You can by affecting Islands (ie. Choke) but since you have islands too, you have to be careful (Xolatoyac gets around it for you, but only as long as you can keep him in play). Edit: It would kind of make any non mono blue players view your Commander as kill on sight otherwise.
I played a naya dino deck in a budget league with Huatli as the commamder and wayta in the 99 and i used her and ranging raptors to pull every basic out of my deck in a game
Hakbal is going stonks Pulled Hakbal in a pack with alt art. Hastily disassembled my trash U merfolk aggro modern deck and decided to flex more tribal anthem-type effects for singleton, add +1/+1 counter synergy, even smoother removal, and land/landfall bonuses. Two weeks later it’s going all-out wide stompy on a full board against Omnath LoA, Liesa SoD, and Pantlaza in one combat. My opponents were a bit annoyed when I was getting my 9th land drop on my turn 4 combat.
People keep underestimating clavileno. The deck is slower than edgar but way more resilient. If edgar gets wiped on turn 5 than it often feels like the game is over. If clav does then you still have a board of 4/3 flying vampires and a full grip. Only one trigger per turn but in orzhov we can double the token generation or death triggers in a couple of ways. 3 mana and so many low drops means we aint playing any ramp either. All gas no breaks.
Very cool set with lots of cool new legendary creatures! Personally, I think Xolatoyac, the Smiling Flood is too cute and cool to not consider building or slotting into a deck, even though it might just look like every other simic value pile lol
I think you're undervaluing Saheeli. There's a commander from March of the Machines which can be compared directly with her - Orthion, Hero of Lavabrink. He is a 3/3 for 3R and has two abilities: 1R and tap to create a token copy of another target creature, it gains haste, sacrifice it at the next end step. The other ability is 6RRR and creates 5 of these tokens. Orthion is already pretty nutty because for 2 mana you get pretty nice extra value out of your creatures (I have an Orthion deck, it is pretty good and fun to play). Now imagine this, but you have blue in your identity, and can also copy artifacts, and also your commander costs 2 instead of 4. It'll get wild pretty easily in my opinion (granted, you don't have the 5 copy ability, but the blue identity+artifact copy makes up for it imo).
Zoyowa is kind of slept on in my opinion. A humble attack with a bonesplitter equipped, and the descend effect triggering is 7 commander damage in a turn. essentially a 3 turn clock that starts it's game plan turn 3. In Pauper EDH where Commander damage is 16, I can easily see Zoyowa dunking on someone in two turns. Double strike is always on the menu, Temur Battle Rage goes hard with Double Strike, Trample, and Zoyowa's Deathtouch. I'd love to see Tomer brew a PDH Zoyowa list. I see potential for explosive early games, nuking the scariest player at the table, then if you need to hang back and grind out that 3 commander damage a turn at least you know you have a clock that your opponent's can't life gain out of.
Wayta also plays great with damage-redirecting creatures like brash taunter and his cousins, the indestructible red and green gods (especially Rhonas the Indomitable) which in turn play great with red damage-based board wipes. For combos use spiteful sliver/wrathful dragon/wrathful raptors with Mirror Entity and Pariah with the indestructible gods plus brash taunter/stuffy doll. "Fight Club" Wayta deck on moxfield has other ideas.
This list is great no S tier. - I dig that Wayta isn't concerned with Dinosaur tribal its Target Creature. - Zoyowa did some work last time I saw this card out but we realized after that tokens don't activate Descend since they aren't considered CARDS= Fun Fact - Xavier looks fun with some untapping shenanigans but I think it would be better in the 99 of my Volrath Shapestealer :P
I keep seeing Clavileno consistently overrated in these first impressions of LCI legendaries, especially when compared to the much more flexible and easily stackable Felisa Fang of Silverquill. Clavileno can't reliably swing himself to get his own attack trigger (being only a 2/2 with no keywords at all), and gives his death trigger ability to only one target on your board whereas Felisa creates hordes of fliers independent of creature type only caring about whether a card had counters (of any kind) on them when they died. the element of punishing removing your commander is also more potent with felisa since she triggers to make inklings even when she* dies with counters. Idk, Clavileno seems like alot of extra steps for less payoff than other WB aristocrats value generators. Carmen is phenomenal though!
I built Akal pakal on arena and it was a ton of fun and can definitely be more powerful and fun in paper with a ton of better ways to make artifacts have flash and artifact cost reducers
You know why there are no spelling bees in Spanish? Because there is no challenge. Written Spanish actually represents how words are meant to be spoken. Mind-blowing, isn't it?? Now, Spanish may tie itself into a knot when borrowing words from other languages, doing some phonetic yoga, stretching beyond what it was originally meant to accomplish. But that's another topic. Spanish has only 5 basic vowels. "A" as in "art" "E" as in "pet" "I" as in "it" "O" as in "not" "U" as in "put" Now "U" has an important exception that comes up in "Aguirre". The "U" there modifies the "G" that comes before it. "G" before an "A" or "O" is always a hard "G" as in "goat". Before an "E" or an "I" it is always a soft "G" as in "gin". The "U" between a "G" and an "E", or "I" makes the "G" hard and the "U" silent. In the very odd instance that you have a hard "G" followed by an actual "U" sound and then followed by an "E" or "I" sound, you'll write the "G", then the "U" to harden the "G", an umlaut above the "U" to unsilence it, and then the "E" or "I". Eg. "agüita" meaning little water. Then there's the matter of "R"s. An "R" at the beginning of a word, or a "RR" in the middle of the word, is pronounced as a regular "R" in English, as in "regular". The rolled "R" in Spanish, that confounds native English speakers to no end, cannot be found at the beginning of words, and is a lighter "R" sounds like a cat purring. This is a sound that in cats emanates from deep within their chest, but we humans better emulate it by vibrating the tip of the tongue. This sound is not present in "Aguirre", which you now have all the tools to pronounce properly in Spanish.
I still think you're viewing Pantlaza incorrectly. It's not a dinosaur commander, it's a blink commander. Blink it to discover multiple times in a turn (reset the once per turn), blink on opponents turns to trigger discovers ... Build it as a Naya panharmonicon list with a handful of the good ETB dinosaurs to make triggering Pantlaza slightly more consistent and then a blink/exile matters list, I'm REALLY looking forward to it
About Pantlaza, yes Gishath is definitly the more exciting Commander but he is also slower, less reliable and most importantly he is way more of an immediate threat. by having Gishath in your Command Zone you basically announce "deal with me or die" to the entire table as you even having one decent Gishath trigger means the kind of boardstate only a boardwipe could stop. because of this youll realistically get slowed a lot when playing Gishath unless someone else is even more threatening. Pantlaza dosnt have that issue. i personalöly build my Dinosaur deck to be modular so i can swap between Pantlaza and Gishath as is see fit, you dont really need to change much between the two if you go the route of Dinosaur tribal.
I'm excited for all three three color pirates. Brass is the grixis pirate commander we've needed, sorry old Brass but like most of original Ixalan you were weak. Don Andres is a grixis theft deck that really speaks to me. And Xavier Sal is just the kind of jank that can make me actually want to play Sultai
Went through the same thing with my kids! Built a Atla EGG Dino deck for one of my kiddos and Brass Pirate tribal. My oldest ended up pulling a Rakdos Vamp theme deck from one of those Walmart mystery pre-con boxes. I was mind blown lol logically I must secure all of the pre-cons now. XD
Huatli may not be as strong as other dinosaur commanders, but she is a dinosaur tutor from the command zone, so if your game plan is Gishath just search for Gishath, competitively if everyone knows Gishath is your commander your game plan is fairly Linear and well projected, if Huatli is your commader then you leave your opponents guessing at what your hidden commander will be
I almost want to build huatli, but not in a dinosaur deck, but in a token/populate deck where we're making a bunch of little dinos that suddenly become double strikers. It's a little weak since they'll see it coming but still
Carmen is such a cool design, but I wish she were mardu or jund colors. She'd make a great "everyone gets treasures" commander with cards like descent into avernus, kibo, and jolyne in the 99.
Ojer Axonil actually doesnt work well with the other damage commanders like solphim or torbran because they are all replacement effects which your opponent (who will be affected) can choose the order of, so the doubling or bonus will occur first which often makes it useless for axonil to be there or vice versa ;) but that what i like about him, he doenst need other triplers doublers or whatever ;)
Smiling Flood also only cares about "Counters" for that untap. Doesn't matter if it's a flood counter. I'd say easy shoe in for anything Counters Matters
Putting my boy Bart in C rank hurts. Carrion Feeder is one of my favorite creatures ever, and the idea that we get an upgraded on as a commander that eats creatures and artifacts is incredible. He's my number 1 pick from this set. Second is the red god because it seems silly to make a viable burn deck.
Did MaRo or someone else say that about GW's archetype for LCI? I don't recall seeing that they changed it near the end and called Kutzil and Okinec "leftovers" of anything?
imagine for the jeskai artifact gnome to play a general dual-faced-cards deck and then turning those cards into artifacts and then flipping them for free. i talk about battles and double faced creatures etc. i want to build this so bad
I think you slightly overlooked giving pantlaza flash to get the trigger once on each turn. Other than that great list. Also how do I submit a list for Richard. It’s a tribe challenge .
You could use tetzin alongside cards that make permanents into artifacts (liquimetal torqe, mycosynth...) so he can transform every kind of permanent. Also as a side note, if there is a lack of transformable artifacts you could use incubator tokens.
So let me get this straight. In a set with 3 different variations of descent, discover aka better cascade and a bunch of transforming cards that mostly have different requirements, even if they share a keyword in craft, the greater power than base power mechanic was to complicated/clunky so they cut it?
I love wayta. Get a roaming throne on the field and youre triggering your enrage triggers 4 times in 1 shot. Throw a temple altisaur in there as well and youre golden.
I was hoping we would have got a really strong Skeleton Pirate with the Grim Captain and more undead pirates in the set, but they basically made him useless jank :^)
I think for Saheeli I'm going to build it as a bad Intruder Alarm deck. Put in some bad mana dorks and try to go infinite once then scrap the deck if it is too easy.
Good video, but just a heads up- Ojer is pronounced "O'Hair" like how it would be pronounced in Spanish (the names are influenced by native central American language).
I would really encourage the crew to look up Nahuatl pronunciations for some of the cards they plan on using for this set, the mispronunciations are getting really painful, and most of them are easy to avoid with a minimal amount of research. Some of the phonemes are foreign for native English speakers, but a good faith attempt would really be appreciated, as at this point doing nothing is lazy to the point of disrespectful to the source language.
Kumena has a higher power ceiling because you can combo with mass untaps like intruder alarm. Hakbal is very strong too, higher power floor but lower ceiling.
See I had to dislike this because the best commander in every set is Yargle, regardless of whether he's actually printed in the set. S+++ tier. Unbeatable. Embrace the Bargle!
Another good thing about Clavileño is that since the ability works on Vampires that aren't Demons, it doesn't work on Changelings. So you have to use real Vampires and the Goldfish crew can't target you for running changelings Tomer!

Mullet gods. Business on the front, party on the back.
@@Dragon_Fyre For sure, I just think Tomer was assuming it was like spreading seas and made them only islands to deny them that way
@@seanscott4543 I think his comments about STAX were regarding the built in untap ability for Xoloatoyac in combo with effects like Winter Orb.
I played a naya dino deck in a budget league with Huatli as the commamder and wayta in the 99 and i used her and ranging raptors to pull every basic out of my deck in a game
Hakbal is going stonks
Pulled Hakbal in a pack with alt art.
Pretty interested in Ojer, if only to hole up behind a circle of flame while slinging forked bolts around.
Very cool set with lots of cool new legendary creatures! Personally, I think Xolatoyac, the Smiling Flood is too cute and cool to not consider building or slotting into a deck, even though it might just look like every other simic value pile lol
Ive played Amalia 3 times and her blow everything up clause has happened every game
Only combat damage is commander damage, the effect doesn't count as combat damage
I think amalia benabides fixes orhozov problem for land drops while you have a lifegain strat, also she can feed reanimate lines with the explore
I feel like Tomer missed the fact that Malcolm lets you cast the discarded card *for free*. The looting isn't the important part, it's the casting.
- Zoyowa did some work last time I saw this card out but we realized after that tokens don't activate Descend since they aren't considered CARDS= Fun Fact
- Xavier looks fun with some untapping shenanigans but I think it would be better in the 99 of my Volrath Shapestealer :P
Aclazotz is my new power-down swap commander for the Tergrid deck
"A" as in "art"
"E" as in "pet"
"I" as in "it"
"O" as in "not"
"U" as in "put"
Now "U" has an important exception that comes up in "Aguirre".
Build it as a Naya panharmonicon list with a handful of the good ETB dinosaurs to make triggering Pantlaza slightly more consistent and then a blink/exile matters list, I'm REALLY looking forward to it
I myself think you should have put Malcolm in the middle
Interesting to see such diverse views of these. Some people rating the Saheeli as the best one in the set, others like it's worthless.
XD
Get your kid the Innistrad: Crimson Vow vampire commander deck if you can. It will be much better than the Walmart mystery box. They will love it.
@brokenstix14 solid choice
All there vampires are going to be amazing in my atraxa countercrats deck
Huatli may not be as strong as other dinosaur commanders, but she is a dinosaur tutor from the command zone, so if your game plan is Gishath just search for Gishath, competitively if everyone knows Gishath is your commander your game plan is fairly Linear and well projected, if Huatli is your commader then you leave your opponents guessing at what your hidden commander will be
Great vid.
I almost want to build huatli, but not in a dinosaur deck, but in a token/populate deck where we're making a bunch of little dinos that suddenly become double strikers. It's a little weak since they'll see it coming but still
Can we get this in podcast form too? As a truck driver it would be appreciated
Carmen is such a cool design, but I wish she were mardu or jund colors. She'd make a great "everyone gets treasures" commander with cards like descent into avernus, kibo, and jolyne in the 99.
You did dirty justice to Malcolm
Ojer Axonil actually doesnt work well with the other damage commanders like solphim or torbran because they are all replacement effects which your opponent (who will be affected) can choose the order of, so the doubling or bonus will occur first which often makes it useless for axonil to be there or vice versa ;)
but that what i like about him, he doenst need other triplers doublers or whatever ;)
Saheeli does very broken things (as many other commanders do) with an untap enchantment like pemmins aura and maná Etb trigger like peregrine drake
I agree that Wayta is really cool - especially because she isn't officially support dinosaurs and can include other "enrage-y" creatures aswell.
Malcolm proliferate sea monsters and eldrazi would be sick if it could pop off
So let me get this straight.
Malcolm is very good
I have seen other lists playing the craft cards in the gnome deck. Don't those count as "double-faced artifacts"? Gives it a lot more playables.
Definitely gonna make a Don Andres deck just to call it Grand Theft Auto: Don Andreas.
I’m building polymorph blightsteel saheeli! Copying blightsteel and swiiiiiing
I was hoping we would have got a really strong Skeleton Pirate with the Grim Captain and more undead pirates in the set, but they basically made him useless jank :^)
Most amped for burny god, dino puncher and the new vamps!
I think for Saheeli I'm going to build it as a bad Intruder Alarm deck. Put in some bad mana dorks and try to go infinite once then scrap the deck if it is too easy.
question on Tetzins Transformed side: Can you transform Tokens with it? Like the Incubates?
Good video, but just a heads up- Ojer is pronounced "O'Hair" like how it would be pronounced in Spanish (the names are influenced by native central American language).
Kroxa is my favorite discard commander but this bat god is definitely in the 99
Kutzil only draws you a maximum of 1 turn per combat no? Because of the "One or more" part of the clause?
tetzin works on your incubate tokens also!!!
My problem with vampires is that wotc ruined em by making edgar the defacto commander lol
It's also not that hard to pronounce for english speakers imo, just unintuitive at first
Gay
Dude, relax. No one is being disrespectful.
Don’t be that guy man… it’s super annoying to monitor peoples pronunciation of a game piece…
And then elevating it to a level of disrespect is ridiculous.
tetzin+ cards that make non artifacts into artifacts= fun
I really don't understand how kumena is stronger than hakbal, and how he is a tier under clavileno even tho most precon matches are won by the merfolk
30:16 [Makes sad Edgar Markov noises]
Thanks!
I would rank Tomer +S
I want someone to play the salamander at clash, bonus points if its not a hard control deck.
