I remember my 95 year old great grandfather in the 1980s who was a farmer who would wake up at 5am every morning, around noon would lay down outside on the rocker swing and nap for about 15 minutes and then eat an apple right off the tree. That stuck with me my whole life.

The fellow lived to be 95 years old. You all should be so lucky. LOL Apples are so cross bred over the decades for sweetness, appearance and longevity, that they are not the same as grandpa had. I remember as a child, around 65 years ago, eating apples off my grandfathers tree. They were wonky to look at and pucker sour. Return email notifications not available at this time.

I worked 50 years in the Hospitality Industry where I worked split shifts meaning 6 hours (9am to 3 pm) second shift was 5 hours ( 6 pm to 11 pm). It was essential that I slept at least 2 hours in the afternoon to be as fit as in the morning! As my body got so used to it I still have my nap (a bit shorter than before) because my body /brain asks for it and so far it works for me.

You are so right about learning things are better if you do it before you go to sleep. I learned when I was younger that if I studied at night before I went to sleep and recapped when I woke up while brushing my teeth and getting ready for the day. Not only did I remember what I have learned but I was able to retain the information better. Do naps work, oh yea they do. You can ask my cat, he does it as well.

In high school in the 1960s I realized I was better at memorizing and preparing for tests if I studied the material right before bedtime, then reviewed it the next morning. Sixty yrs later I still use this technique, especially when I need to memorize something. Sleeping on it kinda bakes the material into my memory. It works.

Spain shuts down from about 13:00 to 16:30. Shops, doors and windows are shut. Everyone takes a siesta after a leisurely lunch, the big meal of the day. Offices got excited when "an American day" was ordered: only half an hour for lunch. The French always went for a stroll after a meal in order to improve digestion. I needed to lie under my desk for half an hour in the middle of an afternoon of long workdays. As an old man, I nap, and dream, whenever the mood hits me.

i listened to a sleep expert explain the perfect amount of time you need for a nap..he called it "the remote nap"..when you feel you need a nap simply hold the tv remote or whatever you choose and when you fall into the nap and the remote falls out of your hand and you awake, thats all the time you need..been following that advise for years now..

Places with a 'siesta' firmly a part of the culture, are often hot climates (and it doesn't cool down until after midnight), and folks routinely stay awake until 1-2am. A Nap becomes more necessary with waking up to get to work at 7am......... (Think Spain).

This is very interesting, and I read through the comments and did not see this point, so want to bring this up to see if anyone has insight
I do nap daily, mostly after lunch, and throughout the day when I feel brain fog and there is a opportunity
What I find is napping is not the same as sleeping, that is I do not nap in bed, I just lie down on the hard floor fully dressed or put a blanket over, first my body would settle into the floor and relaxation follows, then the mind start to wonder, almost the same sensation as going to bed at night and about to fall asleep
After about 10 minutes, I often just wake up with a jolt, like a twitch, and I would feel refreshed mentally and physically
When lying down is not possible, I would find a quiet place to sit and close my eyes, and it is the same effect

There are apps or even watches which help you wake when you’re not in deep sleep : set a window in which the app or the watch will monitor your movements, the alarm will only set off when you moved and are close to waking up already 😊 You’ll feel much refreshed than if you set up an alarm that will wake you up arbitrarily after a set amount of time… Sleep cycles are the key to one’s good use of sleep ❤

    Yeah.
10 minutes or two hours can refresh a person, like an empty phone get recharge in full power!
American Elementary and H.S. need to reserve a 30 minutes nap time for students every day after lunch, starting at noon!
    Why after lunch.
After eating, it's best to relax for
    atleast 30 minutes.
In many Asian country, students attend school only 4 hours each day.
They can chose morning or afternoon. No nap needed.
In the U. S, where students spend their whole 12 years of all day in school without nap time.
    That's not fair!
What's the point of having homeroom a whole hour and not allow to nap?
I never have heard of any president of the United States, who would care enough to bring this up and discuss, nor order the US educational system to assign nap time. Children need to rest at halftime!
