As an Irish pagan I am always so happy when people learn more about the old halloween traditions ❤ both Oíche Shamhna and modern halloween are so special to me 😊 always love seeing people put their time in to making handcrafted stuff for this holiday, so special ❤
Ive been saving up paper egg cartons to do a traditional mix with flour and water. Might add some white glue in the mix. Im 61 yrs old and wanted to mask like this ever since i was 8 but just never did.
I hope you do it!! I made myself a giant eye mask a few years ago and it hangs on my wall to this day and I get compliments and a lot of satisfaction from it.
I'm confused, is the plastic mask and tape still within this? With you taking about forgetting to clingfilm the mask so the clay doesn't stick to the tape... Should they be separated?
No, the plastic mask and tape and tin foil is not in the mask anymore. It was quite the chore getting it out of the mask. The clingfilm would have made that process wayyyyyy easier.
@@MagneticNerdsCreateAny particular reason why you didn’t leave the whole thing intact? Until I saw this comment I assumed you had left the mask and tape inside.
That's so awesome. Although here in Romania we have sooo many traditions I actually like that we imported Halloween as well. I think we all deserve a period in our lives to just express ourselves and be whoever we want.
This is a wonderful video. Your mask looks fantastic. I'd love to see a long form version of this video or of another mask you make. Seems like some steps were not filmed.
Thank you for this clear video. Well-paced for instruction! And, thank you for showing the BACK of the mask--that is where I was stuck. How to create a secure fixture for the person who will wear it. Thank you!!
Thank you so much! I've always wanted to make a mask exactly in this style. In high school i used design, decorate and cut out 2d cardboard versions. A few weeks ago, one of those same base masks turned up in my world. Have been doodling some designs, but still hesitant to start. Until how. This vid gives and shows all thr needed detail of the process, and simply enough to confidently give it a try. Just need decide on my design
That is so inspiring, I am 100% going to be trying this out!!! I’ve been looking to make something similar but possibly with extra natural elements, like twisted willow. Now I’m off to watch some more of your videos!!
@@MagneticNerdsCreate Well I’m not so sure, I think it could either add to the spookiness, or detracts because a simple clay design is terrifying itself. …..I’ll just make both 😁
thank you! liked and subscribed :D this video has inspired me to make my own mask. i have been curious for a while since shopping around I just can't find something more of what I'm looking for.
I like your mask. Have you thought of lining your masks with something for comfort? I line mine with a thinner piece of leather. Foam rubber works as well.
This was a really awesome process to watch! I tried making my own halloween mask this year for the first time and it didnt come out exactly how I wanted it to but it was a fun process. I just kinda winged it and today had the thought huh, I should check youtube LOL! I loved watching your process and it gave me a lot of inspo for structural integrity. My only thing is I want to try to incorporate recycled materials like newspaper and toilet/paper towel rolls! Mine is made completely out of those materials.
What an incredible mask! I love your result with the maché product that you used. Definitely much cleaner, and I really want to try it! Thanks so much! 😊🎃
Third video from your channel that I’ve watched and I want to enjoy more! What video was it that you seen to make the mask? I love the history behind the spooky season!! Would you do this again? 💚😺☕️👻🎃💀
Thank you again!!!!! The inspiration for this project the inspiration came from a random Tik Tok I came across while researching the history of Halloween. And I absolutely would do this again. It’s such a cool and fun way to craft a mask.
The goal of having syran wrap as a barrier between the plastic mask and the cellu clay. That way I could just pop the clay off the plastic mask easier.
Do you think the celluclay might hold in spots on something like a foam pumpkin? I am thinking about using this technique to sculpt a face onto the surface of one. And I’m wondering if it is going to need total coverage around the whole of the pumpkin…
Sculpt the face on the pumpkin. If it is not sticking as you like, a little spray adhesive will help. Depending on the features, you might stick toothpicks or wires though the pumpkin as an armature which will help give shape and will hold it on the JoL
This is a major assumption…..buuuuuut. Yes it should adhere to that style of foam. I’ve done two different pumpkin buckets where the base is a smooth plastic and it worked fine. If you get worried it’s going to start peel up, sealing it with like a mod podge so prevent that.
For anyone who doesn’t want to use a mask as a base, measure your face, then make a clay sculpt of your mask with your measurements. Then layer plastic wrap over it, grease the top, and you can make your mask. If paper mache, you can also make a mold of your first mold so that the flattest side of the paper mache lies on the outside features of your mask.
I love this. I had literally just made a resolution to have a 'British' Halloween next year. Although that means carving turnips instead of pumpkins which is exhausting 😅
We tried to wage that war….but we realized that we were not gonna win. Now little floofs of our fur babies are permanently ingrained in all our projects lol.
Watching this made me think of how spooky it would be to see children dressed with these old fashioned masks but the costume doesn't stop at the "costume". The shoes look like they are 75 to 100 years old along with any "normal" clothing that is not part of the costume. Everything worn should date from 75 - 100 years ago.
Hello! Thank you so much! Yes I did use nontoxic paints. The weathering was just some basic acrylics and then it got a coat of modge podge as a sealant.
@@MagneticNerdsCreate It's great quality, the celluclay was a great tip for getting started and your voiceover is crystal clear, and the music is good accompanyment but not too loud.
You got this!!! Paper mache or celluclay is pretty forgiving and you have a long working time. So you can take your time to make sure it’s turning out the way you want it to.
@@MagneticNerdsCreateI did it! A little different, because I couldn’t figure out how to keep the horns with the tape and tinfoil in while the other stuff came out, so I somehow removed it all from the mask before I did the clay, so mine has all the stuff still inside of it. And I had to also clay the inside of mine. So probably a bit heavier than yours I would assume. But in the end it doesn’t matter, I just wanted to make something similar to hang on the wall because I thought it was so cool! Thank you for the video. I still have to paint mine but I am excited.
Yes you can. The biggest thing to remember if you go that route is you won’t have the same texture or color as a celluclay. So if you’re trying to recreate a similar appearance as my mask, you will have to do some sanding and painting.
Great video, very informative and clear! Could this be sanded more to make the surface smoother? Or is there something that could be added as a top layer to help to help smooth it out more? Thanks so much :)
Thank you so much! Once the clay cures, it can most definitely be sanded. You just have to be careful with how thick your layers of clay are when sanding. Don’t want to sand too much off. If you’re painting it, using an automotive filler primer with some light sanding before painting.
What I did off camera was take an xacto knife and widened the eyes and mouth of the plastic mask. The plastic mask just wasn’t fitting the design I wanted to achieve so some alterations had to be made.
all these things they did not have in the olden days so traditional it is not. they used tocraft from paper and wood(plastic did not exist neither did latex and all that other manmade materials) i would appreciate if you tried making it tryly traditional.
As an Irish pagan I am always so happy when people learn more about the old halloween traditions ❤ both Oíche Shamhna and modern halloween are so special to me 😊 always love seeing people put their time in to making handcrafted stuff for this holiday, so special ❤
That material seems like the perfect one to sculp masks or things made of bone, the texture is spot on with the sanding and gesso.
It really is. I’m forever sold on celluclay for these kinds of projects where you need some bone-like texture.
You can also make something similar by using toilet paper and flour (plus drywall joint compound if you have some)
this is amazing! i love how it looks like almost like old bone in a way, totally creepy and wicked cool!
Thank you so much! The cellu clay really does give it a bone like texture.
Ive been saving up paper egg cartons to do a traditional mix with flour and water. Might add some white glue in the mix. Im 61 yrs old and wanted to mask like this ever since i was 8 but just never did.
Hey, it’s never too late to start! If you’re using white glue, you shouldn’t need the flour. It’s a usually about a 1:1 ratio of water and glue.
I hope you do it!! I made myself a giant eye mask a few years ago and it hangs on my wall to this day and I get compliments and a lot of satisfaction from it.

Ah cool, I'd love to see the unmoulding process, especially removing the innards of the horns.
