  • I had visited the National Aviary in Pittsburgh, PA back in 2018 but hadn't been back since. But after our flight hit significant turbulence to LaGuardia with no hopes of landing, we got rerouted-as chance would have it-to Pittsburgh, so we decided to make the most of it and visit the National Aviary for a little inspiration. What a great diversion from your flight. Birds are so wonderful...gorgeous colors and varieties. Even at the feeder the common songbirds bring joy. Your property will host a lot of birds and wildlife. The National Aviary looks like a great place to visit. I wish I lived closer. 😊

Loved the video. My father took me to the aviary when I was a child (I was born a few blocks away), and I never forgot how wonderful it was.

It would be nice to see you getting some of them flightless pretty birds especially if they can stand your weather patterns outside. Would it be possible to have them roam around freely. You could get a few breeding pairs to started off for future enjoyment, until you build a temperature controlled aviary.

You may be interested in visiting the youtubers White House on the Hill. They're in the late stages of building an open air aviary on their farm property. They're somewhere in the northern Midwest, so they also have to deal with real winters.

What a wonderful place to visit!! Such beautiful birds. Does anyone know what the turquoise coloured bird at 5:35 is?

I grew up with 26 parrots. Be careful. Birds are a LOT of work and live a very long time.

Do you want to keep birds captive?

It’s a huge space where they can fly and pretty much do everything they can do in the wild while being protected, well fed and cared for. It’s not a small dirty cage. It’s a good way to preserve wildlife I don’t see what’s the problem with it. These birds look super healthy and happy.

It’s a beautiful place but I cannot begin to agree with holding animals captive for my enjoyment. If the animal is unable to live in their native habitat, that’s a different story.

Guess some are Not aware of the Huge number of birds that are killed just by domestic cats alone. I see it as Saving the birds! 😊

Please - I beg you - don’t build an aviary. Birds should be left to live their lives in their natural environment. As beautiful as they are & as tempting as it is to make them your own by putting them in an enclosure, doing so is unethical. Leave the birds to soar the skies as they’re meant to. Your beautiful shots also don’t tell the story of the enormous labor it takes to keep these enclosures clean of faeces, rotten food etc, not to speak of the cost of veterinary care.
Leave the birds free & put your efforts into preserving their natural habitats instead.

What would you do with rescue birds then? You can't just release them to the wild, particularly if they are domesticated? They would be killed swiftly. We rescued two diamond doves (th-cam.com/video/CrrKRr-QmNQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ERbK-j2zorw27Nrg), which we're bringing up here this month, and I would imagine giving them outdoor space in an aviary during the warm season and not just indoor space would serve them well. And same for the rescue chickens and ducks. Having spaces to peck and scratch and roam more naturally without getting off'd by a coyote would be ideal.

@@FlockFingerLakes I agree. For sure rescue birds are an exception. My personal belief is that our actions should in no way reward the placement of birds in captivity. That’s the issue I was trying to raise.

Thank you Ms. Summer. If you had an aviary what kind of birds would you put in it ? 🪻🌷💚🙃
