    As a person who grew up in a "totalitarian authoritarian dictatorship" (Kazakhstan) and currently lives in a "free democracy" (US) I totally agree with your video. People often don't understand that you can live a normal life under (almost) any modern government as long as the economy does well. And when the economy doesn't do well, any kind of government forgets about democratic rights and does whatever it can do to protect the banks and corporations.

    • @maggnet4829
      @maggnet4829 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes, just need to be compliant with your one and only government party. If you disagree you are fucked. This is not something that happens in a democratic country (exceptions might exist, but they are that).
      Take e.g. the criminal record, yes it exists in democratic countries, but you'd not get an entry for simply disagreeing with the countries president or party. As well you can mostly insult him/her to your liking, only few and reasonable boundaries exist there.
      No, countries like Turkey are not really democratic anymore, even if they label themselves as such.

      @@maggnet4829 A quick follow-up about free speech in Kazakhstan. The liberal opposition in Kazakhstan lives perfectly fine, criticizing the government and Nazarbayev's family 24/7. No one got to jail in Kazakhstan only for criticizing the government publicly. The only people that get thrown in jail are workers strikes or (more rarely) social protests organizers. I have to admit that in this respect, Kazakhstan has one of the most terrible governments in the world. The labor activists get killed and tortured. This is the dark side of Kazakhstan, but it's not unique for dictatorship regimes. Many liberal democracies regularly violate workers rights around the world. At this point, this is a question of economic performance and whether the state has enough money to deal with the problem. Otherwise, brute force is used. India is a good example. It is a liberal democracy with free speech, but it also throws labor activists in jail. Guess why? Because India is also poor and it cannot afford to give a precedent of government actually listening to people and securing their economic rights.

    Now a silly question of my own:
    I have a friend who's half japanese, half chinese (but entirely brazilian as well as I am)
    He once told me that when visiting China, he rolled up to a street food thing that sold those "weird" foods, like scorpions on a stick, other sorts of bugs and such.
    When he asked the lady if she ate those things, she replied with "No, it's for the tourists". I laughed out loud at the irony. So many people think weird things about the chinese, to the point where it becomes profitable for the chinese to sell these narratives.
    Anyway I was wondering if you ever had a similar experience? Anything that is sold or marketed mostly because tourists believe it's a thing, but isn't too important to locals?
    i.e. here in Brazil people come up with all sorts of weird sushi. There's this thing called a Temaki (kind of a seaweed cone with fish and rice) that has become 100%synonymous with japanese cuisine and I've heard more than once that the Japanese themselves barely consume it.

      Sounds like he went to the Beijing night market. That’s been closed down for a while now. To answer your question, there are a bunch of tourist shops that sell revolutionary era communist merch because it’s what a lot of tourists are expecting (like the 1950’s style green party hats with red star, and copies of Mao’s little red book) None of locals give one flying flip about that stuff, but those shops exist entirely because foreigners want to take some old school CCP stuff home to show their friends.

    I'll try to leave my political alignment out of this, but just something I want to point out: Most Americans I have interacted with (or seen speaking publicly about China) have been taught for decades that China is this monstrous boogeyman. As if every citizen had a gun pointed at the b ack of his head at all times. This doesn't make sense. You can't rule millions of people (billions, in this case) if these people aren't happy, or at least content.
    But I don't want to antagonize anyone too much, so I'll just say this: The greatest success of the US government is making their people believe that every *other* country engages in massive, nefarious propaganda, *except* for the US.
    Guys, at least do your own research. Try to visit the places you believe are hellholes of hunger, poverty and authoritarianism. Don't insult your own intelligence. You owe yourself this.

    • @cbdy1358
      @cbdy1358 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      But it’s not the US talking about the concentration camps and slave labor of minorities in china, it’s independent human rights groups, most of whom are not affiliated with the US. The US isn’t perfect but when independent human rights groups are showing actual evidence of state run slavery and organ harvesting I think the rest of the world should at the very least look into it.
      The US had issues and it’s called out on those issues all the time, it doesn’t hide it because the media won’t let them hide it (to an extent but even then thank goodness for Edward Snowden) but China is a totalitarian government with state run slaves.

    • @maurossauro8088
      @maurossauro8088 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@cbdy1358 Right, so how many times have you heard the media and independent entities talk about CIA-backed coup-d'etats in latin american countries? My country, for example, Brazil. Where in 1964 a democratically elected left-wing progressive president suffered a coup and at the same time there were US navy in our coast, because if things didn't go the way they wanted, then it'd have been
      "boots on the ground"; A similar thing happened in 2018 when Bolsonaro was elected - The PMC called SilverCorp (which had serviced the US government before) was here, just in case things didn't go their way. Same thing happened in Venezuela in 2020, THE SAME american PMC were captured in a fishing village (a laudable display of self-determination by the people of the village of Chuao). These same mercenaries were under orders to capture or kill the president. Did you know about any of that?
      Like I said, I'm not looking to antagonize you, but assuming that media is above good and evil is naive. Same goes for non-governmental entities. PragerU is not affiliated to a government. Same goes for many other think-tanks. We have our own here in the BR, it's called MBL and it's cancer. Helped elect a fascist president and, lo and behold, people are going hungry, ACTUALLY making lines for BONES because nobody can afford meat. Even though we're THE FOURTH BIGGEST PRODUCER OF MEAT!
      In summary:
      Do your own research, see with your own eyes. You owe yourself that.

    Omg, so many Asian people have a picture of me😂 The Chinese just take them, without hiding but sometimes ask and I'm happy to pose with them. The Japanese try not to stare but sometimes I can see they're taking a picture very discreetly. Even in France where I grew up, a French lady asked if she could take a picture because I was walking in a camping with a bucket on my head (heading to do the dishes). She must have found it very "ethical" 😅. The first time I went to the US I was 23 and I was hoping I'll see a native American and I did. I was kind of impressed. Didn't take a pic but took one with a policeman or something because he had a round hat "like in the movies". The craziest thing was when I heard a black man speak Dutch for the first time. I wasn't speaking Dutch at the time so when he opened his mouth, those strange sounds from a cold country in Northern Europe came out. It blew my mind😂 Life is so much fun when you're not thinking about racism but just about how different we all are ❤

    I know we all talk about the differences, especially when it comes to China but what I really want to know is what are the things that are *exactly the same*?
    Sometimes we forget to point out similarities because we focus too much on the differences. I'm moving from Brazil to the Philippines with my wife and that's one of the things I started paying more attention to.
    It's more important for me to know how similar people will be to my home country so I know how well I'll be able to make friends and get to know people around and in which settings.

The few east Asians I am or was friends with were hyper individualistic and moved here or didn't communicate with their 1st generation family due to how over bearing that is. It creates manners and supposedly good people but the trade off isn't worth it. We are going way outside of social credit now and talking different ways of life. Also the only reason the number of east asians I am friends with is low is because buffalo ny has a really low asian population in general.

    I have a question about living in China (sorry for my bad English, though - I'm Swedish): I have never been to China myself. I grew up in the 70's and was in my teens in the 90's - so there was a trend here in Sweden of "Chinese food". Many restaurants started - but all of them serving "Chinese food". However - I presume that the Chinese cuisine is as varied as "European" food - where we - for example - associate Pasta and Pizza with "Italian" food, Calf's liver and onions with "French" food, Haggis with "Scottish food" etc. China - although being one country - since it is so big sure must have "regional" cuisines? Or is "Chinese food" always "Chinese food"? Is there for example a difference between Kanonese food and Szeshuan food? And if so - what is your favourite chinese food or "food region" in china?

    • @RamseyDewey
      @RamseyDewey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah, there are MANY regional styles of Chinese food. Chinese food varies greatly from one province to another. In America, Chinese restaurants usually serve a very limited number of Americanized Cantonese or Hong Kong dishes (which are great, by the way) and I’ve never seen any of them in the mainland. The reason being most Chinese immigrants to the USA came from Guandong and Hongkong, and tried to make their traditional dishes but couldn’t find the right ingredients in America, so they used what they could find instead.
      A lot of my European friends tell me it’s similar in their countries- that there’s a very distinct style of Chinese/Spanish food, or Chinese/German food that you will never find in China.

    Shanghai has a fascinating and turbulent martial arts 20th century history. WW2 combatives legend W.E. Fairbairn spent years training in Japan and China. He was a Jigoro Kano black belt and is credited for setting the foundation for modern police SWAT tactics. He spent years in Shanghai with the police department, back when Shanghai was one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Apparently, Fairbairn studied what he referenced as "The Shanghai Method" (possibly Bagua, Xingyi and other arts) and then condensed these methods into his CQB tactics for OSS operators and Canadian Special Forces.       2. From receiving the Report to informing the public and reporting to WHO on 01.01.2020,i remember it happened within one week. Therefore i won't say Chinese government was trying to hide, particularly compared to some other governments's initial response after being aware of the existence of covid in China;
      3. The local city government tried to calm citizens down by stating that there was no evidence showing the disease can transit among people. They even organized big dinner celebrating an event to show it. It is stupid Before They had more evidence. I remember They All lost their jobs.
      While you might suspect this version is false, you shouldn't totally believe the western news about other countries. Check stories from both sides, you will be surprised.

    Gotta love how Ramsey Dewey is literally more qualified to be a China expert than anyone employed as such in Washington DC, and his opinions can be confirmed by most Chinese people from China, and yet some of y'all in the peanuts gallery will still insist that he's speaking under duress.
    Please share with me your secrets: how do you speak with such confidence even though you wouldn't know Xinjiang from Xintiandi or Li Peng from Peng Shuai?

    Have you ever watched anything from Laowhy86 Ramsey? You two are the only youtubers I watch that have lived in China and you both got Drastically different viewpoints on the state of affairs. I think there's something to your "you get what you put into your experience" outlook and totally agree. I definitely think you should watch some of his stuff if you haven't yet though. He's very likely a huge source of where the Dystopian china image comes from since his primary content is ccp human rights violations.

    That Black Mirror episode wasn't about China though, rather the influence of social media, subscribers, retweets, etc on everyone across the whole world and what might happen if it does become a tangible factor. Not sure why the people asking you about it link it to Black Mirror.

    Heyo Ramsey, heyo people scrolling by. I really hope you can help me out here, since I have a bit of a situation going on and would really appreciate your advice.
    I have been doing Kung Fu (well, officially we call it Kung Fu) for almost 7 years now. While we do indeed follow traditional forms we also do self defence, sparring and just general workouts etc. Just calling it "Kung Fu" classes would probably give off the wrong impression there.
    Well, our Sifu got sick with 'rona and is probably gonna be out for a while. The other person who usually filled in for him (long time student) now can't enter the gym due to not being vaccinated yet and new rules regarding the whole virus situation.
    This leaves me as the next most qualified person to run the whole thing, which is what I wanted your advice on, cause I am terrified of that. I am pretty confident, that I can hold sparring and kickboxing/fighting classes, since that is what I mainly focus on, but that's not the only thing what my school teaches. I definitely don't feel qualified to also teach the other aspects. It's not a super big amount of people every time we train, but I am really scared I will misrepresent the way the school has been run so far. Should I risk changing the formula a bit to actually be comfortable teaching things I am confident in? Would it be a better idea to apply all the knowledge I have in the other areas and keep the spirit of the school as alive as possible? What else could I do?
    I want to coach and teach martial arts at some point myself, that's a dream, so I realize this is also an opportunity, but it's not one I can say I wanted. I hope someeone can help me out here. Bit of a moral dilemma for me.
    I appreciate all your time, best wishes from germany ;)

      No. I’m actually a British person who grew up in America eating old timey British food my mom learned to make during post war rationing after the Nazis bombed the English countryside. That means food that’s boiled and burnt to a crisp until all the flavor and joy is gone so that it saps your will to yearn for actual food anymore.

    Yo Ramsey I need your help. How do you use jack dempseys falling step in boxing nowadays because first of all he doesn’t specify how to throw the second right after the left and also whenever I try the falling step my spar mate usually figures it out then starts to step to the side as I do the falling step and starts to bomb myself. So I’m asking how can I use the falling step properly. Also it’s very hard to do any of dempseys body motion techniques when the coach teaches boxing the more modern way

    My only question is about the reported dark sides of the social credit score. For example, not being able to leave the country is a big one. Also, I understand that there is a lack of freedom of speech and massive amounts of censorship (more than most countries). Again, no country is perfect but some are better than others.
