Bumble bees do make honey, but if it was just a one time thing feeding that bee was fine, it was probably just old. Just don’t leave bowls of sugar water out, it might cause the other bees to start using that since it’s easier than going from flower to flower, and that would cause them to make watery honey, which doesn’t have much nutrients in it, so it’s not very healthy for them.
The sugar water thing was really just a Facebook rumor, but tons of people fall for those everyday, so it’s okay!

Butterfly Pavilion (United States-based invertebrate zoo) volunteer here! Thanks for taking this little one in, so many people wouldn't think twice about trying to improve an invertebrate's quality of life. Most of what you talked about was exactly right, and your set up looked great for a disabled butterfly such as the one you've got! An unflighted butterfly doesn't need as much space as most people would think to thrive, your enclosure is a good size. I'd just like to throw in a few notes for anyone reading through the comments ^-^ If you have to handle a butterfly, even an uninjured one (Removing it from your clothing as you go inside, etc), use a glove if you can (If you can't, just try to keep contact short and gentle) and use the "scissor grip". Take your index and middle finger, approach from behind, and place one on either side of the butterfly's four wings. Never pick them up by their body, and try to avoid any contact with their legs. When releasing, don't place them down on a surface if they're able to fly. Instead, gently toss and release. Butterflies taste with their feet and they're super sensitive, so placing them down on a surface or letting their feet touch your fingertips could damage them and significantly shorten their lifespan. Good luck!

I love this! Especially with monarch's population going down, this is a nice video to share! I have a tip on watering them, though. Grab some marbles and put them in a shallow container (only enough to cover the bottom) and put some water in the container. The butterfly should be able to walk on the marbles while grabbing a quick sip of water without drowning! You can use this for bees too, and it's perfect for gardens!

    • @beakerling
      @beakerling 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

While it is nice to think of helping a damaged monarch as helping the population, a damaged butterfly is never going to reproduce and oviposit again. If you want to help population decline of monarch butterflies, the better option is to plant native host species of the monarch butterfly in your garden and influence your own states decision-makers to make biodiversity a priority. Butterflies generally need two different types of plants, one for nectar in their adult butterfly stage and one for their caterpillars to eat. Please look up which plants are native in your state/province and are important for the monarchs, it really is the best way to help these magnificent creatures so they are not lost for our future generations.

There was no way for it to go back outside so we spent like thirty minutes making a contraption to safely capture it and put it outside. I was very proud after because it worked out and the butterfly stuck around for a bit.

I took it home and kept it around for a little while. It couldn’t really fly so I just put it on a flower bouquet.
After a little while I released the butterfly into the backyard where there’s lots of beautiful flowers. I put it on a rose but when I came to check the next day, it was gone...

Imagine loving butterflies but being mildly terrified of any insects (and especially spiders (ik they’re arachnids)) it’s so weird to hold a ladybug and be slightly scared of it - like somehow this is gonna kill me I can feel it. (Since they only live for about 2-3 weeks) That’s really crazy. I gave her sugar water and the day before she passed, I let her practice flying in my backyard,(which she can’t really fly) and I asked my mom if I could let her fly one more time today, and she said tomorrow. They will guzzle the juice from cut up watermelon pieces with great alacrity! I think the red color probably helps them home in on it as well. I picked up a weakened straggler today on my way to work, took it in where it’s warm (I’m from michigan and it’s beginning to get cold) and left it in a container with a nice bit of melon. I observed it drinking from the fruit with extended proboscis; and not long after that the little animal was vigorously trying to escape its habitat so I took it outside. It began to rapidly shake; almost vibrating for a moment then flew off with what appeared to me to be more or less full strength! It cleared a road at an altitude of at least 12 feet then veered about 45 degrees and rose to about 40 feet and fluttered off out of sight! It was a very happy occasion. But it must make it all the way to Mexico- a journey that takes at least 1-2 months. I’m very proud to have helped the little animal and I enjoyed observing it during our brief period together. I hope it makes it to the big monarch gathering

I had a pet butterfly in 2016, also one that I found with a broken wing. He lived longer than the average life expectancy and was really cool. Thanks to him I overcame this little aversion i had towards butterflies and could learn a lot. Like that honey water is bad for them, as it can crystalize inside them and kill them, or that they taste with their feet. A butterfly heart and other organ positions (so I knew where to be extra careful i googled the anatomy) and so on.

My mother used to have a monarch butterfly farm where she would take the eggs off of the milkweed put them in a enclosure (with more milkweed) and waited for them to become a butterfly then she would release them.

If you have a butterfly that can fly, its too small, but since it can only walk- this is an appropriate size, but ofc it should be bigger.

I raise butterflies!!! the best thing for monarchs is a plant called milkweed. that is the best source of nutrients for them. also if an intact butterfly won’t fly, just put it in a plant. don’t bring it in!! it might be young and the wings might still be “drying” from the pupation stage

Thank you so much. Recently my step mom got one of those butterfly hatcheries of of amazon and when the caterpillars were forming their chrysalis one of them fell over breaking his wings and prevented legs from being formed. Yesterday we let the rest go and I took in the disabled one and I haven't had him for long but Im not ready for him to die. He has crushed wings and only 3 legs and only 2 of them work properly. I didn't know whether it was better to keep him or let him go but now that I know im doing the right thing I want to give him his best life. While knowing that he can barely move to eat he wont live long but I want to try and make the best of it.

I took care of a butterfly for a while, I mixed a bit of sugar with some water and put it in a cotton ball, I also got a bit of dirt and put it with some water and rocks because what I found when I looked it up was that butterflies find puddles and get nutrients from them. The butterfly later on flew off with some coaxing

this really made me happy, you're amazing for doing this, and that butterfly really trusts you, and i can tell she's happy for the time she's got even if she cant fly! also, every time i see a bee that can't fly, i get a flower other bees go to when the bees aren't at that area and somewhere else in the yard, and give it to the bee, i saved three and sadly two died, but hey, at least i gave them a chance for the last 15 mins they got, right? by the way if you were wondering, no, i didn't actually touch the bee i got a stick that wouldn't hurt the bee or anything and then put the bee on there and i set the stick down near more flowers and then gave the flower to the bee, and i sat not too close to where i'd scare the bee, but where i can watch the bee so i know if they're ok or not, and sometimes i leave for a min to see if that helps them calm down, and usually it does, but after i come back to see if they flew away or not. Idk if i'm doing the right thing the way i try to help them or not but at least i did save three, two almost drowned and one couldn't fly for some reason, but i helped them, and two didn't make it.

You saved a flutterby! I saved a Spooder last summer from drowning in the pool. He got better and lived in an unused, brand new trash can with some paper on the ground so I could see him. He stayed a day or two, and then I released him into the garden outside my complex. He was a Hacklemesh, and I named him Hecc. I hope he lived a nice life and told all his friends about the giant that saved him from the swimming pool.

I once had a ladybug who's shell was badly crushed and her wings torn to shreds. Unsurprisingly, she didn't live very long, as I'm sure whatever traumatic experience she had crushed her insides beyond repair. Ladybugs are hard to keep since they're predators, so I dumped large quantities of decaying plant matter in her enclosure in the hopes that she would find some decomposers to eat.
Also! If you find a healthy dragonfly that's just laying on the ground but still alive, take them to a high place and let them rest for as long as they have to before letting them go. Apparently they get exhausted very easily. I wouldn't try to take care of them as they are predators that hunt from the air, and chances are they won't get enough stimulation in captivity.
I'm glad someone else takes care of the invertebrates that they find!

I hatched out 3 monarchs. One of them has folded wings and cannot fly. I give her a honey solution in a bottle cap 1tsp honey to 6 tsp water and at first I put her antennas in and she drank it all. Now she just goes and feeds herself. I’m keeping her in the butterfly enclosure as a pet because she will never make it outside.

I once took a care of a bumblebee I found on the ground and I was sure would die very soon. With a closer inspection, I noticed one of it's smaller flying wings was missing, maybe a bird had took a grasp of it and the wing got detached or something. It couldn't fly even if it tried it.
I put the bee into a small cage similar to the one in the video. I brought leafs and blades of grass inside, and also some flowers. I wanted to ensure it wouldn't get hungry if the flowers dried while I wasn't at home. So I mixed water and honey on a small spoon and placed it in the cage. For my surprise, it drank the mixture. So cute, having it forelegs on the edge of the spoon, and drinking it with it's long tongue!
The bee lived in my cage for many weeks. So long that I actually had to start to clean the cage. Eventually it died. I don't know if it was of old age or what. It started to get bald in the end and got slower. I just wish it had a good life and I still wonder if I should just have euthanized it the day I found it. Anyhow, it seemed lively and with good apetite till the last week, so I wish it was alright.

I'm so glad I've found another person who takes care of insects! My family makes fun of me for it and it's hard to find proper care guides when I'm not sure what to do. It seems to be a bit of a tradition for pregnant white tiger moths to wonder into the house and become exhausted. Though I usually don't know they're pregnant until I find the eggs.
Sugar water works as a great substitute, works for flies and bees as well!
Thank you for this video, made me feel a lot better!

Back in my elementary school we actually raised butterflies one time. I don’t remember what type of butterfly, but the teacher bought the eggs, and all the necessary stuff and all we had to do was watch in “amazement“ as they grew up. I’m surprised none of them died with all the poking some of the kids were doing. And the teacher even showed us each stage when they were in the jars. I’m surprised none of the cocoons fell as she was moving it around to show us their life stage. Eventually she put them in the mesh hanging thing and they emerged from their cocoons we kept them for a little bit longer before releasing them. I thought it was cool but I felt kind of bad that they couldn’t be out in the wild growing naturally.

If you ever find a butterfly who’s wings have not unfolded, DO NOT PUT THEM UPRIGHT! The gravity will push their wings down and they will stay like that, so they wont be able to fly. Just leave them alone and check on them after a bit.

July 29, 2023 I found a crippled monarch hobbling across my patio in the close to 100 degree temps. Right wings curled in toward body, left wings curled opposite. It was so hot, I stuck out my finger and stepped up. I started with torn leaves on a plate, then moved her to a small, clean yogurt cup, then to a large plastic bin. I cut up strawberry and banana, but slight interest in the berry. I had a tiny vase, filled it with miniature daisies, and placed her on top. She roosts there. I have orange milkweed, but day 1 ignored cut flowers. Didn’t want to leave my finger, but can’t hold forever. Day two, she’s still alive. Took her outside and put her on fresh milkweed plant, and wow was she hungry. I read they get their water from mud, so I made a slurry and placed her on the ground. She stayed for several minutes, proboscis like a hose taking it in. I wish I have a butterfly fly bush. I only have the milkweed. I saw the suggestions to use a cotton ball or paper towel soaked in sugar water because it’s hard to stand there for very long and support her while she perches on the milkweed. She falls off when I leave her very long. I will try the marble and water trick, but I read they don’t like their feet wet. I think the milkweed flower closes up shortly after I cut, so my only option is to go outside with her. I’m not sure how many times a day to feed her, so fingers crossed about the cotton ball. You absolutely can identify the monarch’s sex. Do a quick Google search, as this is already too long. When you rescue something, be prepared to care for it. I was shocked you’ve had your girl that long. This is only day two! Thank you for posting! 🌹

I had a butterfly that looked just like that. I called him Igor. Something happens to the pupa during the larva to pupa transformation (it falls or is just mutated in some form) and the end result is a sad looking butterfly. Igor lived for about 5 months, all the way into late January, because he was born late into the season and was supposed to fly south for the winter. Instead he stayed with me and got to watch the snow. I raise and release monarchs, it is a fun hobby, you would probably like it!

I once saved a cicada in the middle of molting, she was on her back so I helped her because I knew birds would come after her. She finished molting the next day and was very healthy I know she was female because her wings dried and she never made the mating call, I now regret not letting her out to breed because I got too attached to her. I have since then been saving cicadas in bad places and moving them to better hiding spots in honor of Wiggles. It is sad that they live 17 years underground and only experience sunshine for 1 week.
