    Last September I sold a PSA 10 Topsun Holo Blastoise for $5,500 after it never moved for 11 months on eBay at the same price. 42 days later the same version of this card sold for $20k at PWCC, and last month the same version of the card went for $9k. Tons of people buying these cards from outside the hobby with little knowledge of these cards.

    can´t lose value that was never there in the first place, as we all know one sale doesn´t equate a new fair market price ;)

      What is a fair market price other than a price negotiated between the buyer and seller? Don't get this logic.

      I agree with this 100%

      @@shazrx533 one single price or sale does not make a new fair market value, if I find someone who pays me 100k for a psa 10 jungle common it does not mean that every psa 10 jungle common is now 100k, it was just an anomaly to begin with.

    • @shazrx533
      @shazrx533 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@StromkirkCurse In an opaque market like a PSA 10 Topsun Charizard, one sale absolutely dictates market value.
      You're trying to compare a PSA 10 Jungle common (a market the size of the Atlantic ocean) to that of a PSA 10 Topsun Charizard (a market with approximately 20 in circulation). The actual definition of market value refers the price achieved between buyer and seller in an auction setting. Given that the Charizard is so rare and so scarce especially in a PSA 10, your only real indication of 'market value' is what someone is prepared to pay. In this case, it was $470k.
      I mean really; be it $500k or $100, who are you to say as an onlooker what the market value is? It's practically worthless cardboard. It only has value because we've given it some.
      Now a completely different question - is that market value *now*? Well that's an entirely different story.

    • @StromkirkCurse
      @StromkirkCurse 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@shazrx533 so you´re saying if a low pop card from whatever set sells for a ridicolous amount (and we know that 500k was ridicolous as previous sales were in the low 5 figures) it´s magically the new market value for the entire pop? I don´t think so. Just because two bidders at the time were in a frenzy and brought the price up doesn´t mean that there is a third bidder waiting to snap one up for the same price. A history of sales data gives an indication of fair market value, not one single sale, even for the lower pop cards.

    Hmm I've been following you for a while and this is quite surprising to hear you talk about something you evidently haven't done much research into...
    The sale originally went for so high as it was deemed to be the only one of its kind. Weeks after the sale a popular TCG TH-camr called "TCAGaming" had confirmed he has a PSA10 Topsun No Number Charizard returning from PSA, causing there to be 2 now in the market. Naturally that is going to force the original card to lose value - which is why the seller sold so soon after in hopes of not losing so much.
    I'm confused why you think these TopSun cards originated from an employee taking them out of a manufacturing room?😂Unless that was a joke in which case that went over my head! There's multiple sources that show it was created in 1995 and one large fact you missed out was that there is no Mew in the set as Mew was released in every TCG from that point afterwards. That fact in itself corroborates the fact that TopSun cards were manufactured way before any other TCG.
    As a fan of your channel please try to avoid hear say videos like this as it's not the reason I watch!

    • @taylorpetersen5542
      @taylorpetersen5542 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      “There’s multiple sources that show it was created in 1995”
      What are they????? Absence of mew??? That means nothing. To believe Topsun was made first is to believe Topsun was illegally manufacturing cards without licensing far before the gameboy games even came out. Glad this is finally being called out for the BS it is.

  • @ROTMGmimighster
    @ROTMGmimighster 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    I think the fact we don't when the Topsun cards were released sums it up. People don't have a genuine attachment or memory towards these cards. Most people weren't born in Japan to collect them, and of people that were, I would guess that the main TCG was still what a majority of people collected.

    • @professoroaksvintagecards4315

    This same thing happened recently with double ender budget made pokemon red and blue. They were a budget release and someone mentioned the sandshrew on the back artwork was proof it was a first print so people started paying more for them. In reality Nintendo didn’t release their flagship franchise in a budget packaging. It was printed by another facility that messed the back art up. The real first print is the 83% Y fold bottom red and blue.

      I have also heard rumor in Japan that Topsun was printed in 1995 for future release in 1997. But some cards leaked in 1995. I have no evidence of this though. People need to understand the point of this video is that his specific research pointed more towards Topsun not being first. However, even he acknowledged that we currently don’t have all the answers. We may never know. It is wrong to say with certainty that Topsun was first or that it was not first.

    I always thought it was strange that there was a 1995 Pokémon card even tho I remember nothing happened until 1996 lol

    Oh man, we were in dire need of this video on your platform. 😂 Too bad the PSA label will probably always say 1995.
    People (and PWCC, lol) will always be vague in eBay descriptions & throw around the "proooobably no more 10s! Likely! Like, maybe!" & "First Zard EVER?! Regrade 1994?!", but maybe the next "big" auctions won't have information that misleading anymore.

    If you buy a card for 490k, it should be because you are rich and a collector, not because you are trying to make money. I hate that about the card collecting game. It’s not supposed to be, buy pack and maybe make 50k.

    • @albireo72
      @albireo72 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The first Pokémon card set released was presumably the 1996 (not the aforementioned 1997) Bandai Carddass non-TCG set that was published in Sept 1996, just a month before the Japanese TCG. Topsun cards were released no sooner than March 1997. Just google for "topsun bandai carddass" and you'll get the full story.

      There is no Mew in the TopSun set - there's only 150 Pokemon in the Pokedex. Whereas the Carddass and Bandai cards both include mew, making it 151 Pokemon in the set. That's because TopSun came out a long time before to originally promote Pokemon to their targeted audience and it was only when the directors of the company wanted to mainstream the franchise that they decided they wanted to include one final Pokemon, which was Mew. All three sets are incredible but in order of which came first it goes Topsun, Carddas then Bandai. Hope this helps! :)
