    I am a backyard chicken keeper 😉. I just love having chickens, always have! We eat VERY few eggs, instead we give the eggs away to friends and some folks who really need some help. I’ve never sold an egg, and don’t plan to. Having them is just part of my joy😊

    Cal-Maine has a monopoly on eggs, they've used inflation and H5N1 as excuses to raise prices, but have posted recorded profits (by a wide margin too).

      Yes, just like for humans all you need is to use a PCR test which is not a diagnostic tool and claim something is infected with something it’s not and they get to kill millions of chickens. I feel bad the the chicken hatcheries….. and everyone else that believes the lies.

    Food scraps and grass clippings are a great way to supplement feed, but there's also a pretty long list of things that you can grow for them as well, if you have the room. This year we're dedicating space in the garden just for the chickens - on our list is chard, kale, collards, Armenian cucumber, winter and summer squash, Jerusalem artichoke, sunflowers, borage, comfrey, peas, turnips, comfrey, and goji. Currently our feed bill is massive, so really looking forward to the growing season!

    • @troxycat
      @troxycat ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ThuyNguyen-mg5jt I suppose it's always possible, but as long as the clippings are fresh and they've plenty of grit, it shouldn't be an issue like straw or hay. Personally I've never had an issue, although I probably wouldn't give any to my micro bantams, just to be safe.

    I got little fluffy bantums this year. They are SO CUTE and friendly and lay eggs too. The egg is half the size of a large egg but I think the yolk is as big as a normal size. So the egg is half yolk and half white and it tastes better than ANY egg I ever tasted. I even cook and Dehydrate them for my parrot. He won't let me go a day without his dehydrated chunky morsels.

    Great advice, natural organic food. Eggs and meat also. Thank you for the video.
    We made a composting drum out of plastic barrel. It had 6 vents and by accident one 1 inch vent hole lost the screen covering it. We put leaves and green grass in the drum and some kitchen scraps. We started finding large bug larvae in the mix. These were black wasps, soldier fly larvae (60% protein). As long as we put food scraps in with the mix in the drum, the larvae would be there. I searched online and found that people specifically raise the larvae to feed to chickens in their back yard. Many you tube videos on it. This could be a source of food fro chickens. Has to be 70 deg or more for the compost bin to work.

    I have kept chickens for several years as pets and for eggs. I can’t agree more about how enjoyable and therapeutic it is. Sitting and watching your chickens is almost like mindfulness. Sadly in the UK it is illegal to feed kitchen scraps to chickens. In fact anything that has been in your kitchen - unless you are a vegan household - cannot be given to them. I do give them lots from the veg garden though that would otherwise go in the compost bin. Love your flock. All the best. Mags

I had a non stop onslaught of rats when I had chickens. I think being near the water is a factor and I think were we live it doesn’t take much to invite rats to your yard and crawl space.
    # Two is chickens only lay
    for a few years but can live for many years beyond. So if you aren’t big on eating your chickens then you are stuck with pets that don’t provide food. I got lucky and found a lady who took mine when they stopped laying. (I didn’t ask questions. Lol)

    My hens are in mobile pens. They are in the fence with my dogs who will eat them if given the chance but they also eat whatever comes to eat them. The two skunks they killed and didn’t eat. 😂 because I move them over fresh grass daily which also means o have nothing to scoop out of the bottom of their pens. I also seem to have no ticks in my yard as my dogs don’t get ticks anymore. And my hens get greens so their eggs 🥚 are delicious. Probably having vitamin K2 which we all need and don’t get much of because we don’t eat grass fed protein. The mobile pens also pretty much eliminates any smell.

    I'd never buy a chicken coop, just because it's so easy to cobble one up from various kinds of scrap/leftover materials most people have in their shed/garage. If it's in my own back yard I really don't care how it looks as long as it functions properly.
    Also you're much too concerned with dedicated bird feed, they can eat raw grain just as well (any kind of cereal really, though mixing them up a bit will ensure a more balanced diet). I never saw a chicken suffering from food poisoning unless they ingest synthetic chemicals like pesticides or detergents, they can tolerate an impressive variety of organic matter including rotten or moldy stuff and even actual s*it.

    Many people would disagree with you on the noisiness of roosters vs hens. They both are noisy, just different times of day and for different reasons,

    • @DaisyCreekFarms
      @DaisyCreekFarms  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Roosters are much louder, I had them twice, sometimes they are mis categorized and end up in hens. And they were really loud and would attach the hens as well specially the new flock if I introduced it. So I gave my roosters to my neighbor, they use them to make more chicks in the flock.

      @TMesser74 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DaisyCreekFarms I think it depends on the roosters and hens, or maybe the breed. I find some hens are just as loud as roosters and some roosters arent as loud as hens. Some roosters crow all the time, some dont. Some hens are very noisy all the time, some only when laying, some not at all. The main thing with rooster noise is it's at the wrong time of day, when I want to be sleeping and probably all the neighbors too. Lol

      Once Avian Flu is detected in a flock, the rest of the birds are doomed. This disease will spread so fast that the whole flock will contract it and die within days. Euthinasia is the only way to keep it from wiping out the entire poultry industry. This would also include our backyard flocks.

    You should change the title...

    • @DaisyCreekFarms
      @DaisyCreekFarms  ปีที่แล้ว

      Titles are very tricky, I choose titles on being searchable and intriguing. If the title is not searchable or appealing, the video does not get views, for example, the video I made on cost analysis of keeping chickens, I just used a simple clear straight forward title: Is it Worth Keeping Chickens at Home for Eggs. I took me 7 hours to make and edit the video and it only got 5k views and made $21. So I made $3/hr on it. Minimum wage here is $15.50/hr right now.
