As someone who is 5 years out of a DV relationship, I appreciate how he made that portion of Violet's Tale unflinchingly uncomfortable while managing to avoid glamorizing the violence. An accurate depiction of the pervasive sense of dread and horror that becomes normal for victims.
Well done for getting out of that situation, it's never easy. I grew up in a violent household and it just trickles through the generations. Sending much love ❤️

Ren just released a song called Troubles. He released it for mental health month and it's his story. It's amazing and well worth a reaction.
"Do you think I want to do this, Violet?"
That line gets me every time. It encompasses both blaming the victim, and a sliver of self-awareness.
I really appreciate your reactions. I'm a nurse in an addiction-adjacent specialty (NAS), and have a schizophrenic sister (who used THC heavily through her late teens and early twenties), and am so affected every time I hear/see this work of art. I am struck time and again at what an intelligent person Ren is, able to distill complex issues down to their essence.
That line of Stevie’s - “Do you think I want to do this Violet?” is a classic parroting phrase… Stevie would have witnessed the same growing up - father to mother, or perhaps mother to him (I had a mate growing up who I witnessed being absolutely laid into by his Mum as she said “I don’t want to do this, but it’s for your own good”).
There isn’t a quick fix to this - it is going to take generations, but raising awareness through art and considered conversation is a critical step. Thanks Dr Syl. Thanks Ren.
Being a social worker in Finland I've met so many violets and so many stevies. My heart brakes for them and for the next generation. 💔😭

So happy to see you react to what I consider the peak example of Ren's bardic nature. Remember, each tale is a single take.
The brilliant guitar work, the carefully woven lyrics, his ability to switch perspective/role from bard narrator to individual characters,
and force audience perspective into the eyes of characters, all while telling a compelling tale that draws you in, helpless to do
anything but watch it unfold to the tragic gut punch ending that hits like a freight train. The ONLY hint you get is right at the
start of Violet's tale, look at his posture on the gurney... similar to a woman preparing to give birth.
The narrative of cyclical violence, how Jenny adopted the same response as her mom and Screech had the same characteristics as his dad... *SHIVERS*
a slightly hidden undertone... some point out that Screech tried to get help from Patrick, who wasn't home, and from his girl, who was busy.
The theory is that Patrick was with the girl!
The part that brings me to tears will always be Ren singing "she never stood a chance" as the view pans up through the stairwell, lik
e a chorus of weeping angels, then back down... down... down to reality "the devil comes to dance." SO POWERFUL

He depicts the cycle of genrational violence so viscerally. Jenny, Screech, and Violet were all victims, in their way, and failed by the systems that should have protected them. Thank you for helping to change that for the patients you encounter, by leading your practice with compassion.

Ren got the idea for Jenny tale from news paper he read about a 14 year old boy that kill a young streetwalker with a knife
The key word is compassion. These tales tell of the lack of compassion of an affluent society towards those who are left behind and conveniently written off or unacknowledged. I cannot help but think of the lives of the royalty.
Thank you!!!!!! For pointing out the dangers of marijuana and underlying psychosis!! As a therapist it drives me mad to see all the new medical marijuana scrips handed out from dr’s without having a full psych evaluation done first or obtaining a family history. I have lost count of the admissions to hospitals I’ve done for first psychotic breaks after smoking marijuana. It breaks my heart and infuriates me to no end to see how irresponsibly it’s handed out.
Your reaction to this song really shows your kindness and caring and compassion you have for others. I can tell you have a big heart and truly care about the people you help. I have seen alot of different reaction videos from others but this one made me tear up when i saw you get emotional. I can tell you have great empathy for others. The way he walks with his guitar and tells a story through his singing honestly reminds me of the wandering minstrel rooster character from Disney's Robin Hood, which I can totally get behind :)
Edit: after watching the full video, wandering minstrel rooster vibes vanished, but I was still glued as the "slow motion trainwreck" in the story unfolded. I need to go make some coffee, have some cookies, and give my daughter a long hug and tell her how loved and amazing she is to shake how unsettling that got.
Every time I see the Tales it’s a movie in my mind. Ren does such a great job in this performance that I think I “know” what they all look like though very few descriptions are given. I also cry, it’s ok, it’s good sometimes.
Yep, Ren really has a way with words. Some of the things he's describing in raw details, but a lot of the time he chooses words that clearly emply bad things happening without explicitly saying it. Like in Violet's tale when the dad and later Stevie always tuck her in but never leave the room.
You're gorgeous. I appreciate your honesty and willingness to be authentic and not try to cover up your emotions. We need more men to model the strength of character to be emotionally vulnerable..
I find it ironic that society previously taught men to hide their emotions under the guise of strength when it is the antithesis of strength.
I'm a huge Ren fan and love watching reactions as new fans discover his brilliance, and your reaction has warmed my heart.
I, too, am a survivor, and Ren is the first I've seen to show the reality of DV. The terror knowing that even silence won't prevent it. Being asleep won't stop it. Not reacting won't stop it. I am grateful that compassionate professionals like yourself exist. Trust me, the comfort that victims feel being in the hands of caring hospital staff is healing in itself.
It's not like years gone by when walking into a police station as a victim and being asked what you did to deserve it or entering a court room and being told by the judge that the designer suit your wearing is inappropriate because it comprises of a jacket and skirt rather than jacket and pants because apparently a skirt to the knee might encourage bad behaviour in men attending the proceedings.
Fortunately today DV court is a positive and suppotive enviroment.
Keep up what you're doing. I'm encouraged witnessing your reaction and behaviour.
Like you say, many of us have very little to model ourselves on and need to witness caring individuals more often. I honestly know very few emotionally healthy people.
Even though Jenny, Screech and Violet are three distinctly separate characters within the story of the trilogy, I absolutely loved the way you used them as examples for DID and its possible fragmentation. Really a very interesting concept and I can totally see how you draw that parallel there. Amazing and very insightful reaction

Thank you! It's a powerful and important song. I'm glad you brought up intergenerational trauma. I believe I have seen Ren comment on this song that it was one of the questions he wanted to comment on. Jenny and Screetch can not have had easy lives growing up in foster care, and that is surely part of the reason for how they ended up where they did. But also the similarities between Jennys and Violets freeze response and Screeches and Stevies propenity for substance abuse and lack of emotional regulation.
He is an amazing storyteller and musician. Thank you for covering his art I don’t know that I would have discovered him on my own. I love how his music and you gift soft and gentle approach to such challenging sections of mental health are just a perfect pairing

I still can't watch Violet's Tale without crying. I remember the first time I watched the trilogy - the feeling of, "Why would someone write something so very sad?". I think by drawing us in and giving us a personal attachment to the characters in the story, it makes us less able to ignore the situations we come across in real life. I really feel that this trilogy of songs could help to activate change in the systems that currently exist. It could set actions in motion that save lives. Thank you for your empathetic reaction to this beautiful tragedy.

Sorry this brought back your trauma. Ren was inspired by a news report that happened in London. This was another performance that was like a play. The story is tragic, but his storytelling is amazing. Thank you for your commentary about mental health.
One thought that occurred to me: Violet's father and Stevie's father created many victims. His wife, Violet, Stevie, Jenny, Screech and in a way the officer that was forced to kill Screech.
A cycle of abuse and violence that is only brought to an end by the ultimate violence. It can be so difficult to break these cycles as the familiar is more comfortable than the unknown.
I've never truly broke free of my childhood issues, in my sixth decade now I'm only starting to begin facing certain truths and I feel it is a little too late for me now.
I urge everyone to talk to someone - this helps so, so much. I listened to others but never spoke myself so please find the strength somehow and do this. o7 to those who have come through to the other side and found some peace.

Great reaction. There is also a wonderful book called Psychopath Free, for people in relationships of any sort with toxic people. Ren has a live performance of this song where Richard has more of a story line,. Ren instructs the crowd to join him at certain parts of the song for a cathartic release. He was teaching music therapy and it is beautiful, IMO.
It’s a tale of the circle of violence and excellence of the violence. Jenny like her mom screech like his dad. And a system that lets kids slip through the cracks. 😊
As a 70’s girl raised in the “SWAT” street fighting ( mostly boys ) was not optional if you didn’t want to get SA’d. They would group fight me starting in elementary. You learn to think of yourself first.
In one way or another You have to detach from others (in my case also my family). Any sign of disrespect , like not surrendering property, is viewed as a challenge and will most likely result in brutality. I never gave them my money. Instead I learned to be more brutal than all of them combined. I was really good at fighting and received a lot of praise for it. The only way to defeat monsters was to be a monster. I learned how to be the biggest, most aggressive monster of them all.
I didn’t deserve to be attacked by older boys, I was already being attacked at home. The rage I felt at constantly being victimized was overwhelming and it felt so good to take out on the bad guys. I am very lucky to have never been Gang R’d . I started to receive counseling at 12 yrs and found other ways of conflict resolution. To this day every now and again I will have some giant rando make a B line for me in public ,in broad daylight and either threaten to R word me, rob me, or just plain kill me. I am a 117 lb 53 yr old Grandmother and those monsters are always shocked when they realize what’s coming to them!
I love to “Dexter” a wicked monster who picks on little girls and old women!
Fortunately, after a verbal thrashing , most see the wisdom in walking away.
It’s become so frequent though that I rarely leave the house.
It is truly scary out there.

Wow, I was raised in Eastern European slum and even my experience in violence (aside from sexual assault...) is much more moderate. I'm truly sorry you don't feel safe. Security is fundamental human need, being deprived of it changes people so profoundly. My dad, being raised in an orphanage, carried the fear and anger in him till his very last days, a piece of granade Nazi soldiers threw through the window of the orphanage during Warsaw's uprising that embedded in his scalp went with him to his grave, along with legacy of violence he tried to shield me from as long as he could.
I hope you manage to move somewhere safer and regain feeling of security,at least to some extent. It's worth fighting for, don't give up.

this trilogy is important, in that the window it provides can be used as an effective tool to give warning to younger generations as to behavior to avoid. seeing the consequences without having to live through them.
I have lived through portions of this. I wish I would have seen this in my young teens.

Ok, this is the second reaction of yours that I've watched this morning. I'm gonna sub. I love your commentary. I am so interested in psychology. I always have been.
My daughter was diagnosed with Schizo-Affective Disorder at 18 yo. She then was diagnosed with PTSD, anxiety, Organic Brain Syndrome, and then later mild head trauma from DV from her children's father. I took custody of those boys.
They are 15 & 13 now. My daughter did something horrible in 2015 and was put in prison. She died in prison at the age of 30 in 2020. I miss her so much. This is a great reaction, Dr. Syl.

The story is based on a true event of a young girl street walker and young boy who killed her with a knife while trying to rob her, that Ren read in a newspaper.
Ok, so I have seen dozens upon dozens of reactions to this epic, yet twisted tragic of a trilogy and I have to say that this is the most emotionally and cognitively brilliant reaction that I have seen!!! You sir, simply get/got it… and I mean all of it, and with such astuteness and empathy.
I’ve never seen someone grasp every little detail of this masterpiece on such a human and empathetic scale.

Yup....I had Trauma and PTSD and dissociated early in life that it became full blown. I was diagnosed at 25 and I had a good doctor but the clinic changed and he got sacked and had to move away and now no doctor wants to touch a case with such a diagnosis. No matter if they have Trauma Therapy and all that in their bio, suddenly its not ethical to treat me. One flat out said, it´s not worth the insurance risk. I am 46 now and I have a nice neurologist but all he can do is give me meds to survive while I .......survive. I tried so much and it is so tiring. Ren´s music brought me a lot of comfort, even if only for a while at a time. More than the neglectful doctors.

Ren is a modern day bard painting such vivid imagery with his storytelling that it pulls you in and forces you to keep watching - even when it gets physically uncomfortable during Violet’s Tale. And Ren uses this ability to shed light on far too real issues in the world. Ren is special.
Anyway great reaction! Now you get to wait in eager anticipation with the rest of us, cause Ren has said that he and his cinematographer Sam have plans to film a pilot to pitch to Netflix when Ren has finished treatments in Canada. All we know is that it will be in the same raw style as this trilogy, but that is enough for me to say that if Netflix doesn’t give Ren his own show, they are fools 😂

Just wow! Love the reaction. As a Ren Fan since a while back and as a 38 year old thats been through countless KBT sessions, therapists and so on since i was seven. I think i can remember one good shrink that i got for a month. Just looking at this reaction, anyone that have problems and get to meet you are f’n lucky. It is not easy finding a match with a professional as you. You will help people i can tell. Hope to get that help some day as well. ❤

Love your reaction! I really hoped to hear more about Jenny and screech’s trauma responses though. They seem to mirror their parents, regardless of not growing up together or with either parent. Jenny freezes/ violets silence (maybe violet was freezing too and that’s why she was silent), and the temper and lashing out of Stevie and screech. Infact, both Stevie and screech lashed out even more in reaction to Violet/jennys trauma response. It seemed to enrage them even more at the freezing/silence of Violet and Jenny.
I wondered if this is a thing? Can trauma responses or defense mechanisms be passed down? Can someone be predisposed to certain response based on genetics?

I enjoyed your reaction to this piece. To fully appreciate Ren's life journey you would benefit hugely by listening to some videos he has uploaded over the past 10 days. By searching for "Ren- Chapter 1" you will be led to the first in a series of videos detailing his story of how he was badly let down by the NHS and how his undiagnosed Lyme disease and the effects of drugs he was prescribed for conditions he did NOT have, affected his life and career. I might decide to watch these in your own time, and that's fine, but having taken in the information in these stories you should then react to his latest release "Troubles". I can 100% guarantee that you WILL be blown away by it's content and how it is presented. Best of luck with this journey my friend.

You brought up Dissociative Identity Disorder with Violet. If you haven't, check out DPR IAN. He's on par with Ren when it comes to his ability to express mental health with music and visuals.
I wish…I wish… I wish I could be one of your clients. You show such empathy and a true understanding of people that I very rarely have seen in the various therapists and counsellors that I’ve encountered. When you graduate, you will be an exceptional psychiatrist. The ones that I have encounter have been dismissive, grandiose fuckwits who are very quick to dismiss the words that their clients are telling them. They’ve already made their mind up, almost even before you utter your first word. I just feel that you might one of the few who actually listen. It’s is surprisingly rare. And trust me, I have experience. I’m a psychology major and I am ashamed of my profession when I encounter 90% of so called professionals in this field. Please keep being you. Imagine how much damage your colleagues have done to Ren's life.
Interesting reaction and analysis, using your clinical practice and learning to lend emphasis to the tales. However, given you are studying psychology what better way to learn than from someone's life lessons. As a prelude to the release of his latest single "Troubles," that tracks Ren's horrific journey through illness and psychosis, Ren has released a series of "Chapters" 1 to 8 in almost story book style, where he sits and talks to us through the camera lens and relates his journey piece by piece, leaving nothing to the imagination. In doing so he presents as absolutely vulnerable and honest. For any person embarking in to the world of psychology, Ren's chapters 1 - 8 should be an essential watch. (find them on Ren's channel). The "beautiful" thing about The tales is that I feel violated in Violet's tale. It's so terrible! He is enormously talented, Ren, to be able to perform this piece of art - and he goes all the way around and ties the bow in the last sentence. fantastic

Especially once you reframe Jenny's tale now with the knowledge of her age, it brings up a lot of questions about why she is walking the streets at night, in high heels (like she has a thousand times before). Maybe Screech is not the only one who is not in the foster care system. Ren points out in interviews that Screech is actually a victim in this story too, though obviously the story is narrated to make us immediately consider him a villain. Which was kind of his point - Society sees a bad boy, and blames drugs and the people he associates with - but don't stop to consider, how did he get there.

@@cultivatinggrace Okay, I'm sorry for wondering about it. It's just out of all the things that could be inferred about Violet, fawning seems strange. There is no mention in the song of her being overly or excessively attentive to the wishes of her boyfriend, so thought maybe you had meant a different word. Peace.

I did infer that she also fawned in response to her intimate partner violence, because that’s what one must do when in that situation, which wasn’t told in the story.
