This turned out Brilliant! Had not heard of the packing tape trick. Thanks for your references on your site. This will be very helpful. Please keep adding to this.
Once again, thank you, Rick. Your explanations of your reasonings/thought process as you progress through the painting are very detailed and extremely helpful to me. May your generosity be returned to you one hundred fold.
Love the unique expression of this subject matter. Your interpretation of the photo is beautiful. The painting has a lovely masterful expression . Preserving the whites is a challenging task Thank you very much for the inspiration knowledge and skill you give so many viewers.🎨😀❤️
dunno if you guys gives a damn but if you're stoned like me atm then you can watch all the latest series on InstaFlixxer. Been binge watching with my girlfriend for the last weeks =)
I love scenes like this. You have given so much helpful information on painting reflections, Rick. Thank you! I’m inspired to dig out some of my nautical photos and start composing a dockside painting of my own.
Very interesting style this time. I especially like how you dealt with the water above and below the boats. The key to this success I think is a very accurate pencil drawing.
Wow Rick. This has to be one of my favourites. You used so many colours and yet it is harmonious. A very tricky subject matter. You are indeed a Master of this medium.
Really lovely painting! A lot of lessons to take away from this video! I appreciate you sharing how you made the correction with the Mr Clean eraser & packing tape.
Not quite ready for this one yet. But I love dock scenes and I aspire to getting there one day soon. Thanks! I learned a lot from this one. One question…does your use of packing tape as a mask remove any paint or paper when removed? Wouldn’t washi tape work just as well? My current packing tape is so sticky it’s hard to remove from my granite countertop when I wrapping packages. Lol.
I only use the packing tape on unpainted paper. I don't have an issue with it removing paper, however, you need to try your tape and paper to see how compatible they are. I work with Nichiban rice tape, and it works quite well. I haven't worked with washi tape.
I made an attempt at this and very happy to learn about water and reflections here. I also feel like I learn so much about blending colors. I do have trouble making my colors as dark as your. Although I am using same color of paint most of the time.I end up adding Payneś Gray to darken. Any suggestions? Thanks so much!
Thanks for your comments Carolyn! A timely question for me as I'm currently working on an online course about mixing paint. It's going to depend on the paint you're working with as to how dark your color will be. If you're starting with a dark valued color such as Royal Blue, you should be able to create a mixture that's very dark yet fluid using a ratio 75% paint and 25% water. If it's a lighter value paint such as Sap Green, You'll need to add a darker valued paint such as Royal Blue, Alizarin, Raw Umber to get a darker value.
@@RickSurowiczWatercolor May I ask who makes your royal blue? I looked for a manufacturer and didn´t find one. So wasnt sure just which blue I should be using. Thanks.

What size mat and frame would you use for a quarter sheet? Love your tutorial videos, Rick! :)
I use a 16x20 inch mat and frame.

This is wonderful, so many techniques to try but doesn't the pkg tape have too much tack?
I don't have too much of a problem with it. I always recommend testing your paper and tape combination.
I really love this painting :))
Thanks Nancy!
Beautiful 😉 thanks again
Thank you Kath!
Its been very long you havnt painted flowers... can you please if possible.
Thankyou for sharing the video..wonderful as always...
I've been doing a lot of landscapes lately. I do plan to work in some florals. Thanks!
What is this packing tape? Here in the UK we don't really use that term, and the transparent tape sold here would damage the paper.
Thanks, Andrew

Hello, do you use a Specialist paper in orden for the packing tape work? In my case, it took off a lot of paper 😢
Priscilla S. Jimenez You need to use a quality paper, like Arches cold press.
Lanaquarelle 140lb Cold Press watercolor paper is the paper he uses according to his website.
I do use 140 CP Lanaquarelle as Mary mentioned. I always recommend experimenting with your paper and tape to see if they are compatible.
the boat has a smeiling face
Alvero Castignet was once asked "do you use masking?". Alvero's answer : "No I don't, masking is very amateurish".
I love his work.
