I bought my 7600 Sony in about 1994 in Tottenham Court Rod, for about £120, and I still have it, recently replaced the electrolytic in the DC DC converter (under the can) to restore it to full health.
I bought mine in 1990…
Today I ordered a kit containing the 27 capacitors
Let’s see how far I get. It will be my first SMD repair…

I picked up a Sony ICF-SW7600 in good cosmetic condition which shorted the batteries immediately. Now repairing. Hoping this is a part failure in the DC/DC converter or audio portion. I am concerned that someone might have plugged in a wrong power supply or batteries backward, which would make this a mechanical parts donor after frying everything. But most of the trouble has centered on bad caps, so I've got my fingers crossed it's not something really fatal. I will use surface mount tantalums mostly, except for 3 large value electrolytics. Will follow up on results.
If it’s the version like mine with SMD caps then it’s highly likely that’s the issue. I’m just recapping an ICF-SW77 with tantalums. I’ll be interested to see how you get on. Mines not working still so I must revisit it and get it sorted
Blimey, I've got one of these that works, kind of, display good, audio ok but fm tuning muddled , I think tuning in general not good and I saw a caps kit online £24, have dabbled a bit with electronics and thought I'd have a go Having watched you taking out the first I think I give up. I'm used to caps with two long legs that you push through your desoldered holes and just touch the iron the other side and bingo, snip, sorted. I'd never seen surface mounted caps, nightmare. I think you just saved me £24. It's a shame, good radio and I used it when I crossed the Atlantic in a 30 foot yacht in 1992 to listen to French SW ssb daily Atlantic weather forecast. Sentimental value. Thanks for the video mate. Ps mine was £200 when I bought it in 1991 I think. Hell of a lot of money in those days.

@@Radiocruncher Thank you , Btw did you fixed that sony icf-sw7600 ? I bought one off the ebay for 10 quid and planning to recap all capacitors . is it better to buy the same capacitors or tantalium smd ?
Yes I did get it going again. Tantalums are better in my opinion. Easier to fit and should last a lot longer
Forgot to mention that I am also experiencing problems with the band select button as well as the scan tuning button. Not sure if these problems are all related.
Is there a quick fix or any tips you can give me to diagnose the problem?
Hi Mohamed. The problem will be the tactile switches on the board. The only cure is to replace them.

_I have ICF-SW 7600 GR. It worked great only I developed the back plastic where the antenna is. I can't find plastic or a case for it anywhere._

That's the part you need. Not available to the UK but not sure where you are. Have you tried heat welding and JB Weld?
_I welded heat, but it's not nice to see .. I don't have them in Croatia anymore, and if there were, I would buy a new one._

JB Weld is a grey colour and can be sanded and painted. I would heat Welsh it then use the JB Weld as a filler then sand it back to a smooth finish. You could then spray it. I can’t really suggest anything else apart from keeping a look out for a spares set
Hi Graham,be wonderful if you could do a midweek stream still as I and a lot of others look forward to them and I suppose we have got used to them over the course of the last four months and has been a welcome break from all the stresses of the pandemic.so if you can find your way to continue that would be marvelous.thanks for doing them and keep well.regards mike
Hi Mike. Thanks for the feedback. I initially started the midweek streams to give people stuck at home something to look forward to. This fitted in well with Mrs Cruncher and myself not being able to go to work. The situation has changed now though. I will continue to monitor numbers etc and see how it goes. if there’s still demand and people participate then I will keep doing them as long as I can. Cheers Graham

Sounds like it could be as simple as the speaker or the headphone socket is open. Download the manual and have a look at the schematic from the headphone socket onwards as it can’t be much

Electrolytic capacitors are going to be the culprit. Unfortunately this one has more wrong than just capacitors

My 7600 receiving 80-108Mhz but am all bands -silent only slight noise, it happend in locker after 25years+ in storage. Anybody can help??

Yes the capacitors in them are smd electrolytics if it’s the same model as this one then they will need replacing. They may have caused damage to the pcb due to leakage as well. Good luck
From a selfish point of view do all the streams that you can. These have been a welcome distraction from the reality of something that was very serious for me here. We have had almost 35,000 cases in the county where I live with over 1500 deaths. It's really frightening when you drive by a local funeral home and see a refrigeration storage unit in the parking lot. I can't tell you how much I appreciated the live streams during the week to get a few hours of escape during those dark days. We are getting better here now with things reopening but many fear that the other shoe may drop. Whatever you have time to do is fine by me. Let's just hope that we are all on the way to some sense of life as we knew it. 73 Doug.

I have 7600gr that I bought right before Sony ended production. How can I keep this running for a long time? Any tips to keep the capacitors healthy? How long should I expect this one to last?
Hi Francis. It seems to be the SMD electrolytic capacitors that are the problem. Some versions don’t have them though so worth checking if yours has

Looks like it does. If you leave it too long then they are very likely to leak and cause damage

I also have the radio and it is also NOT WORKING. I am from India , went to Sony ,India and they kept it for 2 months and said sorry. Can you help me ? I shall pay for the cost of repairing this radio incl. To and from shipping charges.
