Your channel is awesome. One title I'd like to see come to the criterion collection is 1994's Fresh. Hope you'll bring it up in a video someday and maybe they'll see it???
Thank you for the kind words and glad you enjoy the channel! I don’t believe I’ve seen Fresh so I’ll need to check that one out. Thanks for the recommendation!
For me this go around, I took advantage of the sale to get some box sets I've been eyeing. The Melvin van Peebles set was HIGH on my list. As was the Before Trilogy. I'm still kicking myself for not getting the Ousmane collection. I grabbed a few other random ones like the Val Lewton collection, Seconds, Thief, Walker from Alex Cox, Incredible Shrinking Man, and the three films by Polish director in the "Three Fantastic Journeys by Karel Zeman" the presentation alone of that set made it fun. The case is a pop up book! I grabbed it because he was an influence on Terry Gilliam from Monty Python. I rarely spend this much on the sale, but I had been saving up for a trip that got cancelled.
The films I got for this sale are: Paper Moon, Funny Girl, Scarface, Happiness, Pandora's Box, Demon Pond, Brief Encounter/The Long Farewell, Mother and Real Life. I watched Mother and Real Life and enjoyed those -- good pickups. Haven't watch Demon Pond or Brief Encounter/The Long Farewell yet but seen the others before and they are upgrades for me. Other Criterion releases I've been watching this month are The Last Emperor, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Black God, White Devil, The Red Balloon and other stories: Five Films by Albert Lamorisse, I am Cuba, Triangle of Sadness, and most recently Werckmeister Harmonies. It was quite interesting - very slow paced but filmed in unique ways. You need to be in the mood for that type of film and may watch in 2 parts since it's 2 and half hours long. Bela Tarr's first feature is an extra and I haven't watched that yet but I will.
I went overboard this month 😅 I picked up Come and See, Thin Red Line, Dressed to Kill, GDT's Pinocchio, the Irishman, police story 1&2, Le Samurai and Time Bandits. RIP my wallet haha
I really desire to find a copy of The Thin Red Line I was unable to do the finding of this title at all during this sale though , I hope that you will enjoy this one ! 😀
Saw this video of yours yesterday and went to Barnes and Noble and picked up and this morning watched Menace II Society and wow it was so good thanks for the recommendation James , and wow that was such a powerful film indeed ! Looking forward to No Country For Old Men and The Beast ( Janus Contemporaries title ) and might be picking these titles up outside of the sales !
I picked up Paper Moon, About Dry Grasses, Scarface, and upgraded Seven Samurai to 4K. I'm like you, James. I was going to skip Werckmeister Harmonies, but I heard good things about it, so I may visit my local B&N tomorrow and pick it up.
Great picks! I snagged: "Happiness" 4k, "Gummo" 4k, "Greg Arraki's Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy" 4k, "Pandora's Box", "El Sur", "In the Spirit of the Beehive", "The Night Porter", "Peeping Tom" 4k, "Victims of Sin", and "Mean Streets" 4k.
Interesting buys James, I'm still mostly working on my back catalog after starting collecting discs barely three years ago. My Criterion budget for November caps at 6 titles, four purchased so far....After Hours 4k, oh yea!, I Knew Her Well, Stranger than Paradise, Perfect Days 4k. Final two will for sure include Diabolique, with toss up between Blast of Silence, Rififi, Godland. I have that Universal release of Parasite 4k, and it looks absolutely stunning in addition to being a stunning movie, stunning everything. Your Dawgs looking primed, while my Tide simply blew it, congrats!
Great choices, Brotha James! I have all of those including the new Shape of Water Criterion 4K. The only one I don’t have is Drive My Car. The Max stream is good enough for me for now, just like Sound of Metal and Power of the Dog.
I picked up the following from B & N during the sale: Happiness, Sembene box set, Dogfight, Werckmeister Harmonies, Afire, Not a Pretty Picture, Real Life, Querelle, I Am Cuba, and All of Us Strangers. I just watched Not a Pretty Picture and would highly recommend it. It's disturbing and a difficult watch, but a powerful look at dating violence and trauma.
James Werckmeister Harmonies is superb, I’ve also just nabbed a copy of the Curzon Bella Tarr box set to add to my Lars Von Trier and Ruben Ostlund sets, just waiting for the Wim Wender set to drop in price again. I really liked About Dry Grasses just about to watch The Beast one of December Janus contemporaries.
Just grabbed 4 more titles to round out my complete haul of a total of 13 titles ( including 1 box set Apu Trilogy) Final 4 all blind buys 1 Paper Moon 2 Victims of Sin 3 Pickup on South Street 4 Not a Pretty Picture
You should have trusted your initial inclination to skip Werckmeister Harmonies. It’s the most bloated, boring, pretentious nonsense I’ve ever seen captured on film.

You got some nice pickups there! Enjoy those titles. Thief is one my favorites in the collection.
@ it was one of my favorites I watched last year. Amazing film!
Great pickups James. There are a few of those that I still need to check out.
Thanks, Tony! I'm pretty happy with the haul this time around.
Great list James!! I enjoyed Werckmeister Harmonies. Bela Tarr has his own unique style.
Looking forward to checking it out, Archie!

Godzilla 4k, Mulholland Dr. , Arsenic and Old Lace(fun movie), Le Circle Rouge, Local Hero, Brazil, The Leopard, War and Peace.
HIgh five for Local Hero, one of my first Criterion purchases, and one that is truly rewatchable for years to come.
Nice pickups, Fred. Enjoy that haul, and Happy New Year!
Menace to Society and Love and Basketball. Also have The Grifters and The Holdovers coming.
Very nice. I’m looking forward to seeing The Grifters with the upcoming 4K release. Merry Christmas!
I went overboard this month 😅

Awesome, KB! I didn’t know The Power of the Dog was on Max. I can check it out there. Thanks for the heads up!
@ actually Netflix. Sound of Metal is Amazon Prime, I believe.

Awesome pickups, Eric! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Not A Pretty Picture. I might pick that one up in a future sale.
Another Pabst film with Louise Brooks is Diary of a Lost Girl. Kino has released it on Blu-ray 🙂
Thank you for the recommendation on Diary of a Lost Girl, PDX!

Steve, I look forward to checking out Werckmeister Harmonies. Happy New Year!
Picked up moonstruck a few days ago but I’m going back for more lol
Nice. I hope you find the titles you’re looking for!
Just got paper moon on 4K and pre ordered Paris, Texas on 4k
Nice. Enjoy those pickups, Jason. Both are great films!
Didn’t you have Menace II Society? I remember watching your review video a long time ago
Yes, I picked up Menace II Society 4K when it came out in 2021. Great edition!
Just grabbed 4 more titles to round out my complete haul of a total of 13 titles ( including 1 box set Apu Trilogy)
Final 4 all blind buys
1 Paper Moon
2 Victims of Sin
3 Pickup on South Street
4 Not a Pretty Picture
Nice pickups, Modalsoul! I don’t have Not a Pretty Picture yet but heard it’s pretty good.

Uh oh. Glad I picked it up on sale 😂. Will check it out and see.
