You are correct, Bryan, the official video cuts off the last 30+ seconds of the song for a quick fadeout.

Ah, the bitter sweetness of "time". I have a very fond memory of me and my sons (then 13 & 15) standing arms on shoulders, singing along with this at a Porcupine Tree concert in 2009 ❤
Love this song, and the guitar solo is just perfectly emotional and very tasteful indeed!

Always think of Time Flies as being the Pink Floyd fans entry point to Porcupine Tree. Oh and there is a longer run out in the album version.

Definitely the centerpiece (and longest track) of their The Incident album, and also one of the best tracks on the album. I said the same thing yesterday, but it very much shows off Steven Wilson's subtle mastery of texture and tone. This one in particular has a hauntingly beautiful bittersweetness to it, and in general owes a huge debt to Pink Floyd (both Time and Animals). As for the link between older prog rock and bands like Porcuptine Tree that link is Marillion, who were almost single-handedly responsible for keeping prog rock alive in the 80s and also moving it towards this "neo prog" style that hugely influenced Wilson and PT.

So blatantly Pink Floyd circa 'Animals....' I love it!

Right literally almost the exact same guitar pattern/production/progression as ‘Dogs’

I'm hearing Pink Floyd's "Dogs" all over this.

He has said he did that on purpose to give it a nostalgic feel, to go with the idea of the song.

Fun boring fact, I used Porcupine Tree (as one of the bands) when I chose my then new high-end speakers, like 15 years ago. A pair of Bowers & Wilkins DM685 coupled later with an ASW608 sub. An absolute smashing combination to this day, still have them. An awesome band and awesome sound that I tend to come back to very often. And as usual an awesome reaction and analysis by Bryan! :-)

I always thought the character in the last verse was flipped: the friend taking "you" out of the darkness and talking at "you" - the brightness is their fond memory of you and finally seeing you after you've been through this huge phase (b section), it's been years - and they're so happy... only to realise... you aren't the person they thought any more and you have not come out of the B section intact... in fact - it never really resolves - it kinda just gets pulled out musically, and so... the friend realises that time flies and they'll have to walk away and just remember you on that fond memory in that coat.

All of that bassy, airy foundation in the middle section is totally a callback through time to the Pink Floyd song Time. Don't blame you for not noticing, since you've probably heard the PF song just twice.

It's a homage to pink floyd.. it's basically dogs and time combined.. Great solo... Steven knows how to emote.... a modern master at it

    "Tense anger-sadness"
Yep. That's pretty much what you'd find in the Oxford dictionary as the definition of "Steven Wilson" for pretty much all of the 2000s

I think the reference to the cigar is about success and also a reference to Floyd's Have a cigar and maybe Wilson's growing disillusionment with the band at the time

Early tree was basically a Pink Floyd cover band anyway

@@redshift912 This song is the closest they came to a Pink Floyd cover. Early albums definitely had the PF influence, but they made it their own thing.

The original "Shesmovedon" from Lightbulb Sun or the one off Deadwing? I like both, but I definitely prefer the Lightbulb Sun version.

@@TheDondoran The original. I love how emotion builds up in a quite way. I was not aware there was a version of this song on Deadwing, even though I was just listen to that album 5 minutes ago. 😀
