I love that throughout history, there are countless ways people avoided paying taxes. And rightly so. It is after all, theft. And you'll never convince me otherwise. If any other entity approached you and demanded a substantial cut of your earnings, you'd tell them to fuck off. late reply, but- I understand why you would feel like this towards insignificant taxes like taxes that go to the royal family (when in reality, we don’t need them because we live in a country where the government controls, not the monarchy.) but taxes are still important to keep society going. Without paying taxes you don’t contribute to education, government services such as the army, police, and here in the UK & other countries, medical service. Without these things, society would fail & people would have an extremely low quality of life. The economy would turn horrible as everyone would fall to pieces and not be able to work as they’re ill or have had crimes done against them. Not to mention the help the government gives to disabled folk & children (Disability living allowance, child benefit etc.) which would all go away if the government was not funded via taxes to give this stuff to them, causing the death & low quality of life for many. TL:DR, taxes can be annoying af, especially when it’s for something that’s not needed/beneficial, but without them society would crumble as we wouldn’t get the resources we need.
As someone who rents a basement it honestly would probably feel the same as that but a whole house , honestly basements are kinda cool to live in it’s like having a little den cut off from everyone else it’s nice .

Just want to point out that there are also a lot of false building fronts on the street, blocking gaps where the underground comes out into the open and hiding the railway, thus keeping the aesthetic of the street.
Some houses have windows like that for aesthetic reasons. I know of a few that have these "windows" in front of places that wouldn't have a normal window, e.g. a dividing wall or a cupboard. If they weren't there the outside would look unbalanced.
