    Here is a fun fact about the Dreamcast's Windows CE usage: It isn't actually installed on the system itself!
    Instead, the game discs actually supplied their own OS which was booted from the Dreamcast's boot menu.
    The alternative for the developers at the time was SEGA's Katana OS.
    Also, that is not just a regular old version of Windows CE, it has been custom tailored by Microsoft to contain Direct X.

    • @tehprogramerer
      @tehprogramerer 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Bright Spark There isn't a Katana OS. There is a Katana SDK for the Katana Dev. Box, which provides a set of libraries for low-level access to the components and it is up to the developer to either use them or create their own if they have some need to fulfil that the standard libraries can't provide. Microsoft's Xbox provides a full OS which games run on instead of developers calling directly to the hardware (which is still possible).

    Look at a Dreamcast controller and then a modern Xbox controller, you can see how it influenced all modern controllers.

    • @slipangle3027
      @slipangle3027 9 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      glitchsmasher It really only influenced the Xbox controller, and that was because Microsoft was negotiating with Sega on having Dreamcast games play on Xbox, but the deal fell through. That's also why the original Xbox controllers have that huge logo on them; it was originally the VMU window.

    • @glitchsmasher

      slipAngle Also things like the OUYA and the Shield controllers. You can also see a fair bit of resemblance between the Dreamcast and Gamecube controllers.

    I’d LOVE to see a new take on this build since the GDEMU has been released, SD card reader that replaces the optical drive for a digital solution, with a big enough card, you can fit a nice chunk of the library on a single card and I’m just imagining a second attempt of this using a Switch type setup where you actually have an SD card slot on the shell that can read those games directly off any card you pop in!

    Thumbs up for anything with screws, being able to disassemble, repair, and reassemble things is good. Gluing things together is what I did in kindergarten, okay in a pinch but not something any professional tech company should have adopted as a standard.

So, Ben, if you want a new project (and this is something I have been wanting to do) tear apart a VMU and make it better! COLOR screen, better battery, more memory and better computing power. MrMikehunt87 Yeah, it's not. And it looks like you need to boot from a disc to start with anyway, which makes it somewhat useless for a handheld.
      A shame, though. Because otherwise you could treat the drive as an add-on that doesn't need to be permanently installed, and only plug it in if you need it for a specific game.

    Can you suggest which system would be the easiest to make into a handheld or laptop I'm hoping to get into building all my favourite consoles into handhelds . I am disabled and live with my father and we only have limited space so if I play video games I have to have them muted except the Genesis where I can play with my headphones on. But if I had all handhelds with headphones I could stay in the same room and play my games. I do play my gamegear,psp,DS and 3ds in the living room and it's just so much easier to play them and be there for my dad when he needs help to the bathroom or wants to be fed and whatever else he needs.

  • @awesomeferret
    @awesomeferret 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know it's not relevant to this project at all, but I wonder how much of a difference replacing the backlight on that display made on color reproduction? I'm assuming this one isn't good enough to see much of a difference, but I'm assuming that when the CCFLs in stuff like my mid 2000s 1440p Apple Cinema Display go out then while I could make a replacement it would mess with the color reproduction (and there were many CCFL screens that look great even in 2021, they just were very expensive back in the day and don't make sense now that they are worth as much as a more modern one that looks nearly as good and has an least double the refresh rate.

    Only thing i would change about this mod is adding VGA support since VGA is so easy to obtain on this console. Then having a switch between RGB and VGA for those older games wouldn't even be an issue. Not sure of that Sony screen can handle it by default though. Have to check the sync but otherwise a screen from most RaspberryPi sellers will include a variety of connectors.

    The controller problem is actually a simple issue, the handles are 90 degree right angles but they need to be tilted inwards to the top like most controllers. It's more comfortable to keep your wrists straight for long periods of time while the DC controller causes more wrist bend in it's grip. Ben still would like you to try a DC controller and VMU 2.0 project, get past your emotions and make it better. Dream Pi, DC is online again. :D

      Oh you're in for a potentially rather bad time, i recall older laptops use a really weird variant of LVDS which is very much unlike DVI/HDMI. While on DVI every wire pair is its own colour, on those older displays it's all mixed up in a really weird manner. Strip the display unit of your laptop until you can get a display designation, then check out suppliers of laptop screen VGA/DVI adapters, on alibaba/aliexpress or Chinese part of eBay, and poke them whether they have a unit that works with your screen. Use good judgement when dealing with Chinese vendors, they might lie to you, so try to get independently verifiable information out of them. Check out automotive suppliers too, this weird link format has been used in automotive for a while longer i think. I think it's the first generation FPD-Link.

    "Thick"? "Stacked"? Damn boy, I'm hoping you can get a good enough heat sink for this thing, because you're making the Dreamcast sound HOT.

    I'm re-watching this, so I might've actually said this before, but... "Let's give it another go!"
    I love the layout of the Dreamcast controller, and the VMU's are actually pretty cool, though not necessarily worth it, if you ask me... BUT, there is a big problem. It's not the cord thing, which is a slight niggle, but not that big a deal. Feel the controller. Run your fingers along its edges... Yeah! Everything is sharp! I feel like it's a slight redesign away from being one of the best controllers ever. There would still be personal preference issues, and possibly some slight layout tweaks, but the inarguable flaw would be fixed by simply rounding the edges like was done on its spiritual successor, the Xbox controller.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never got bothered by that edge myself. Really like how ALL the controls are very close to the edge though, this makes the controller comfortable for endless hours at a time for me, while others make my thumbs hurt. And at the same time it feels meaty, there's plenty to hold onto. There's some hand repositioning effort needed when going between D-Pad and analog, but whatever, D-Pad was barely used anyway, though i guess that's the reason why this design hasn't resurfaced.

    I would like to see a project using a recycled lcd+digitizer from a touch phone with a raspberry p. I wasnt to use it for temprature control but it's the hack to make the screen work that would be really interesting.

    That "North bridge" is actually arm7 Yamaha AICA sound cpu.
    Two lower memory chips are texture memory, four in a row - system. And another one near AICA - sound.
    As for buses controller ("north bridge") - that's HOLLY, and it's inside video SoC.
    "Large chip with connection to dvd" - that's bios bootrom, duh (with flash memory for settings near it).

    Ben, get rid of the cdrom and install the gdemu so you can just read off of the sd cards

  • @antech9986
    @antech9986 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I hope you can all figure out that the dreamcast has an sd card adapter for it which is much smaller and replaces the disk drive (Its not official) which can slim it down, and the dreamcast naturally puts out a clean VGA signal, so using a composite psone screen will really run down on the quality, hope this helps
