The very big problem traditional Hapkido is the majority of attacks do not come from wrist-grabbing. You simply don't see Hapkidoists winning MMA matches because strikes, throws, takedowns punches and kicks are highly effective. If you don't know the difference between a takedown and throw, you probably shouldn't be reading this response. Even though weapons are "fun" to learn - why waste your time distracted whenever long weapons are not easily accessible on the street? My 83 y/o Hapkido instructor for the last 7 years (7th DAN #47) in Ji Jan Jai's Korea Hapkido Assocation didn't waste my time by performing complex and ineffective wrist maneuvers due to their impractical nature of true self-defense. I stiff response from an assailant will simply counteract all wrist grabbing techniques. For those interested in an outstanding book on Hapkido, I suggest the 1100 page book published in 2000 by Marc Tedeschi titled Hapkido: Traditions, Philosophy, Technique. Most Daito Ryu aiki jujitsu, aikido and hapkido practitioners testify- out of the 3,808 techniques developed by Takeda and Yuk Sol Choi - only about 20% are useful. Good luck to all of those studying martial arts, but my simple advice after studying martial arts for more than 40 years - throw out the "garbage" that doesn't work and concentrate on what is effective. This is a much more gratifying and effective way to learn the "physical" aspect of martial arts - especially for an aging practitioner. Dr. Dean Whitener 6th DAN TSD.

Im not sure whats impractical about learning defence knife attacks... learning joint locks and throws is surely pratical- towards deepening ones understanding of human kinetics, and its manipulations...
lots of training is good for the body, the mind and heart.

hapkido mainly only works against someone else who knows hapkido. especially since one of the principles is to not retaliate, to use the situation to your advantage whatever it may be, instead of doing whatever you want with it.

Francis Allen which is better art bro krav maga or hapkido? I feel krav maga is not a proper art, krav maga people know only one pressure point, and that is dick, that's it, even a kid will know that

If I am not mistaken, I see no difference between Hapkido and Japanese Aikido folks. Great techniques. I would like to see the grand master defend against someone who has mastered the art of punching and grappling and an unwilling opponent. Big difference folks!

Hapkido also has punching and kicking and wrestling.

Aikido is traditionally less jagged and harsh like Hapkido. They came from the same martial art prior but then two top practitioners of that art moved to separate parts of the world to Korea and Japan, creating Hapkido and Aikido, respectively. Hence the similarity. Also, with these demonstrations when you practice them and show them it provides a very genuine understanding of the human body's mechanics hence why done slowly and also for show. The practicality of these moves in a real fight is quite slim especially when the person is high on adrenaline and constantly moving around and striking. However, when put into ground work the understanding of the joints and other more-pain-inducing areas is helpful - but then again that's also what jiu-jitsu does - Hapkido and BJJ just focus on slightly different things; BJJ also being more specialized in ground work. I can definitely attest though, that Hapkido's knowledge of those locks has put me at an advantage when sparring full contact MMA-style due to the locks/throws/pins are unorthodox for people more attributed to BJJ. They are very flashy and I wouldn't use half of them but let me re-iterate, the knowledge of how the body works from those "flashy" moves definitely put me at an advantage (but of course it also was down to who was applying those moves/knowledge too). So yes, big difference in demonstration and actual application but it definitely does not take away from knowing how to do more damage.

Seeing similarities between Hapkido and Aikido you should for they have the same roots from Japan but two different masters for the one that develop Aikido took the deadliest out of movement and made it Art in self defenses where as Hapkido added to make it have more deadliness.with kicking and weapons. Two different approaches for two different ends. The kicking art in Hapkido has large range. So you have weapons combined with hand techniques you see. The range of techniques is just larger in Hapkido then in Aikido for root of these techniques in from Japan but development of Hapkido is Koran for they add lot more.

There are so many differences between Aikido and Hapkido the the list would last for many pages. 2 obvious differences Aikido has no punches and no kicks, also there is no grappling in Aikido. But it is obvious you have had nothing to do with displays such as you have seen here.

this is for demo. Fight MMA in the ring is different. Hapkido is meant for self defense and not fighting.
