the moment we've all been waiting for
ME TOO :)
Always loved the VL Calais, especially the turbo. A real Aussie classic.
it sure is!
Thanks Ross enjoyed my day filming with you. The vl came out well on camera.
Great day and a top bloke really made it all that much more fun. Thanks again. 👍🏼
A couple of years ago not many people outside of Australia would know this vehicle existed. TH-cam and channels like yours Ross are spreading our "culture" .
SPOT ON MATE!
Best Holden ever , RB30 for the win
its an ICON for sure
You’re killing me! Best car I ever owned, or should I say ‘survived’. It was so easy to get power from these and the light weight made them very fast. Oh and the turbo dose when you let off the accelerator - infectious! I loved this review. Keep it up Johnny.
You used to have one!!?? man what a car id love it in my garage
@@RossReviewsau I think they became rare because most of them just ended up around poles. I’d love to own one again. I’m going to dig through old hard drives to reminisce.
Really enjoyed the review. It’s such a clean example of a VL. The new turbo sure would have made a difference. The 0-100 was a bit slow likely due to the 4 speed auto. Manual swapping it would really open it up. Thanks for the review.
Hey, thanks for the comment. I'm the owner, and I totally agree with you there. Turbo upgrade will happen now the track, also a quick shifter, diff valve springs would finish it off great. Then I'll need to upgrade the brakes etc list goes on 😂👍🏼
Manual would likely open up the revs a bit I would think but auto turbo cars are fun too
the Auto is slow but its a cruiser car really.. very fun just rolling around and making it flutter
@@RossReviewsau Yeah that is true. You’d sure have fun with this car either way.
@RossReviewsau sometimes that's what it's about. I enjoy driving older autos now, and the 6+ speeds have too much of a temperament at low speeds to enjoy without putting them in manual mode
VL Calais 😍 the dream car
they are so damn cool
This brings back memories lol,so many mates growing up had a VL Turbo I loved them then & I still do what a classic car 😍 I enjoyed this one thanks buddy.
Thank you for sharing the video and sharing the Australian motoring world. Thank for another Holden. I have commented once before. I am in the United States. It is nice to see Holden still has a following in Australia.
Our pleasure! Glad you can see these cars that only a small percentage of the world has even heard about
Beautiful VL, favourite colour on it too. 0-100 was slower than i thought it would be but its an older car and its got a 4 speed auto but still would be a ripper to drive
its an old Auto.. so was expecting it to be around 6
Even the base vl was a gd drive. Fabulous power train. Had one for work in the late 80s
They sure were, a huge improvement over the VK in terms of drivetrain.
awesome cars
They are a good car I had a wagon for 25 years with all sorts of mods. Then gave it away a few years ago and I knew I would regret it.
Passing on a nice car is always a regret 😅🥲
Especially for free.@@RossReviewsau
Far out Holden made some awesome looking sedans and wagons. How in the world did these cars ever go out of style in favour of bloated-brick SUV's?! Wish car manufacturers still made classic long wheel-base rear-wheel drive sedans. Love the interior too and it looks super comfy.
Couldn't agree more! these are so cool
Agree 100%, but non-car people prefer practicality over looks and performance and their buying preferences have changed cars forever unfortunately.
That's why I love this channel - seeing cool cars I didn't even know existed. Greetings from Europe!
Glad you like them! this was an epic aussie ICON!
i knew a guy over 10 years ago with a vl turbo and it was insane. gotta love those john howard baby bonuses huh lol
Hands down best aussie car
Had 86 cop spec turbo in 90’s in NZ. Ex Aussie. Had amazing brakes. 135 mph std too . Great car . Manual too .
Love the 80s cars
epic era
Dad had a VL back in the day. It was an executive, fitted with 15inch steelies, an exhaust and lowered springs. He got me into cars. Sadly, written off when an EL-GT failed to give way. Being a Holden family, we were not sad about the loss of the EL-GT (being in the wrong), ha ha ha.
Sadly not many left after all those years!
Great review, interesting car and something different. The auto is holding its performance back. A lot of people focus on the engine and power and less so on the transmission.
its 35 years old and an auto so 6.4 is actually not terrible
@@RossReviewsau agree it’s not a bad time at all for a VL. Its just an interesting comparison on how an older transmission compares to modern ones. For example the 2.0 litre, and heavier, FWD street tyred Hyundai I30N DCT with over 100kw less power does it in 5.2secs…
Thats sick, a thank you present! Nice vl too..
CTEK are the 🐐s
You can always see the nerves taking over when someone else is driving your car
its fair almost 90% of the cars i review im the only one to have ever driven them besides the owner :) i take a lot of care
My dream car for the last 33 years
Needs a high-stall and some diff gears to shave that time down, and a shift kit. And some brakes!
Agree 👍🏽
yes haha
Always loved the vl calais
EPIC CAR
Awesome review! Loved it ❤
Thank you so much!
the baby bonus VLturbo
Cop spec VL with the bullet proof manual was the car to grab in the day. But this one is the nicest.
manual would be cool but this was the luxury one
Pretty awesome car for back in the day. Shame couldn’t run theses bit longer in production
Only 2 short years
Damn bro 60K is approaching! Love a good RB send 👌
thanks brother.. its about time! lol
Nice to see a VL turbo now review a worked VL Calais Turbo Manual! with 800RWHP 😃
More to come let’s hope
Colin Chapman's mantra: add lightness. I've just acquired a 2003 VYII 3.8 with 170? kW, but it's significantly lighter than my poor broken XR6,and it feels quicker! Fear not, the Ford will be back.
lightness is a thing for sure
What a classic 😮
Sure it 🥵
Lovely clean example of a VLCT. Need to get a brake upgrade from a VT as the OEM brakes on the VL turbos were dangerously small.
Need brakes 💯
Nice mate i have the VL calis wagon only 200 built awesome cars 👍
thats killer mate
The bad thing about TH-cam is that you can't post any pictures or videos for reply only comments.
My mate bought one from a Melbourne auction 5 speed manual for about $110,000.00 delivered to Sydney recently.
In the nineties, they were selling less than $20,000.00, and my mate bought one for $13,500.00 back in the days with only 27,000ks.
How times change .
The Leb boy's will be drooling.
i was drooling
We need more of these imported to the states 😮
Good luck! Not many left
The good old VL turbo, aka the Lebbos Lamborghini
Better than a lambo😎 habibi tells me
sweet ride m8
we agree :)
Very Clean!!!
Very!
Anyone know how reliable and capable the standard auto boxes in these cars are?
If your ever wanting more VLs I have a 86 running a built rb25 and manual box
👀 maté absolutely would love to see it.. can you send me a message on instagram or fb
amazing! that dose !
So good!
Love the VL's, and mate almost at 60k hope we get a 60k burnout lol🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽😅
Fingers crossed! Let’s hit 60!
Damn how high does first gear go? That's crazy
This is why we need 80-120 times in Mexico; or something similar. Would put lots of cars in different time brackets
I wish I was able to safely do it.. the police can get crazy here 🥲
Thought for a second it was Troy Candy 😂
😂 still waiting for that collab!
Good to see these around but a shame it hasn't been kept stock.
I fear like a Barra almost none will be left stock
Opinion on stock ford focus rs 2016
good
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh the old Carlton Ferrari
The best Ferrari 😈😎
4"11s with a 2 speed powerglide 3500 stall converter transbrake completey different car to drive
Needs a 3 1/2 grand stall converter
VLs were definitely the best looking 80s Commo, with the reliability of having a Nissan heart.
They're much more attractive than VR or VS with the shitty Buick v6
they are cool as hell
About 10 years ago you could pick these up dirt cheap, pretty disappointing for me how much they've gone up in value because it means ill probably never own one haha
They are getting very pricey
Took ya time ross 😂
about time eh
Most reliable engine ever factory installed in a Holden
lol
Fully Sick Bro ..... Fuuuully Siiiick.
Hectic habib
@@RossReviewsau Perfect car for a quick getaway after firebombing your rivals tobacco shop.
Nissan never used a turbo in the 3 ltr skyline
C'mon the COMMO mate !!!!!!!!
Far ken oath boyz !!
Let’s go!✊🇦🇺
Fully Hectic uleh!
Kebab cruise 👌😩
Didnt know they came stock turbo??? Never seen a 3l rb in anything except station wagon in new zealand.
Yes sir
See if you can find a Mitsubishi Cordia Turbo to review
if anyone has one hit me up!
@@RossReviewsau I wish I never sold mine I installed a 4g63 from a turbo galant was putting out 200 kw at the front wheels was a lot of fun
355 vk episode??
whos got one
He should have stalled it up of the line to go harder.
Agree I should have. I tried again a few days later and got timed at 5.8 seconds. huge difference .
Didn’t wana break it😂 35 year old car
That turbo isn’t even in it’s efficient range the owner would have a heart attack if he wound it up to at least 22-23 psi plus
I think it was around 15-17lbs
It was more like this:
Holden decided to support the Fans, so instead of dropping the V8, (unlike Ford during this era), they borrowed the bread and butter engine (which was the bulk of their sales) and spent their whole RD budget on keeping the V8 alive.
This is why we are Holden fans.
i love Holden & Ford
V8 till 98. Then we got LS@@RossReviewsau
Rust bucket
🤡
@@RossReviewsau actually is a clown
The only good Commodore..
😅 I like em all
Vids fake his fuel guage is working ifykyk
