  • Here is the distillation process used for extracting natural essential oils from plants like Spearmint. The oils are used for soap and other recipes. I am using a Essential Oil Steam Distillation Apparatus like this one: amzn.to/2mlwVzk

    OMG! Thank you so much for a simple explanation of how to extract plant oil. Honestly, some of these TH-cam videos, people just talk you into a comma, and give you heaps of information you don't need (as ultimately, like home brew, it will be trial and error until you get the right product for yourself personally). Add to that the fact that they speak in another (scientific) language.
    Thank you so much for just speaking in a language the average Jolene can understand, and for just getting to the bloody point!
    Bravo! :-)

    Only thing I see that was missed and should be mentioned is that when first starting the procedure, you should fill the oil separator just past the first open tube with distilled water. This will prevent any precious oil from being lost when it rises by going into the hydrosol collector.

    Well done. . If you put a vigreux condenser into your setup you can distill that oil infused water in the boiling flask. The vigreux acts as a fractioning column to separate the oil and water

    • @gantz4u
      @gantz4u ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was always mad at how much terpenes are lost to the hydrosol vs the what comes out in oil. But ive only tried it once, shoving everything together in an alembic. The product was 100% hydrosol with maybe a drop of oil floating on top from maybe 2 pounds of material. not even worth the effort imo as i have little use for the hydrosol. I was always thinking about ways to try to extract the terpenes from the hydrosol. Like maybe adding an oil and shaking it up or adding something to displace the oil or terpenes trapped in the hydrosol.
      I think youre right with fractional distillation and possible super cooling the condenser. As the terpenes seem heavily aromatic therefore light and tend to float off at ambient temp. The only use ive found for hydrosol. Which is to leave a pot out or boiling to incense a room.

    So,... the steam heats the oil to a vapor and carries it up and out of the flask? then when you cool it the water and oil vapor condenses out? Cool! That's a lot of work for just a few drops of oil, but it's so concentrated. LIke those few drops equals a pound of leaves? The boiling flask looks like a bunch of tea! I appreciate the value of essential oils a lot more seeing the process! LOL. I love this video! Thumbs Up!

This whole thing was so fascinating to me. When he first started, it looked like it was going to be very difficult but the way he explained every stage, what each section did and why, I think I'd like to try it. Also, I'm getting into the essential oil thing pretty late in life. I'm just north of 60 and started growing my own herbs but short of what I use in my cooking, I don't know what herbs do what, how I would figure out what temperature to extract them at and how to use each oil I make.
    Even if no one helps me, I still think this was a really cool video. His willingness to show each phase was super cool. And even more super cool was having his wife help him.
    Thank you for this video. At the very least, your video brought in another fan of the effort.

    If you wrap some fiberglass cloth around your extraction bulb, you will get less oil dripping back into the steam generator and get more oil condensing faster. Signed aka "The Unknown Chemist" VWR and Fisher have it in rolls. I've used a darning needle and fiberglass thread to sew it in place. (I unraveled it from the cloth.) Aluminum foil works too.
