I speak English, but I have friends who speak/write Finnish and Spanish. I find that Google translate (and/or Facebook translation) work well, at least for these languages. Is there a barrier to letting the user speak or write their native language, internally translate it to English for input to the application, get the application response, and then translate it back to the user's language?
Good point. I speak english and spanish and google translate is good at understanding spanish though its translate rarely are like how native speakers speak. The important part is google translate grasa the concepts of regular spanish speech and can turn those to english. It does however have a tendency to translate idioms word for word and those translation mean nothing close to the idiom's intended meaning
chatgpt4o is much better at writing in Mongolian than the previous models. I think that it is an emergent ability rather than a specific training. So, the smaller languages r being covered step by step, I believe.
If the A.I. benefits a progressive unification of all the languages into a single universal one for all humans, welcome A.I. Culture does not disappear when a language stops being used but when people decide to forget this culture. Greek and Latin cultures have not been lost with the abandonment of ancient Greek and Latin. And facilitating communication and understanding between people seems to me more important than continuing to partition the planet with the maintenance of old roots that slow down the development of civilizations. I don’t mind if people of the future will speak English, Icelandic, Swahili or whatever, I would be happy if my great-grandchildren could speak the same language than any human of this planet.
That's a dystopian vision of normative culture as a goal, and that' an opinion that worries me a lot. Are you saying any unexpected, minor opinion is not worth it ? You are very worrying
For many of us, our thoughts are shaped by the language(s) we speak. What will we lose if the ways of thinking held in the many languages of our world disappear?
It doesn't seem that having many languages has prevented civilization to emerge, and the many wars fought between countries and regions speacking the same language proves that communication doesn't mean a thing. When radio was invented, they said it will prevent wars since now we could talk in real time and solve differences without resorting to war; the same idea was refloated when telephone was invented, and then with the internet. Wars are caused by greed and fear, not lacking of communication. One universal language would diminish the planet culture for no gains.
As a speaker of 4 languages, I can definitely say that it is far more than that. There's a whole culture behind it. In some cases I can translate a phrase but despite it being correct, it won't make sense to a speaker of the other language. Perhaps a tacky example, but "Use the force Luke" will simply not mean anything to anyone who hasn't seen Star Wars. Now, swap Star Wars with culture...
