    I just recently bought the 2024 outback onyx edition after my recent toyota camry was totaled after being hit in the rear. Here are the main features that won me over. I considered another Camry, but for the money, the Subaru was the winner. Being older, the higher profile makes it easier to get in and out of. The higher ground clearance means I no longer have to worry about hitting curbs, or crawling over parking lot speed humps. The AWD means it can likely be driven anywhere I would ever want to go here in South Carolina, even in the Winter, when we have our occasional snow. I know it is not as off road capable as a landrover or 4runner, but even the somewhat less offroad capabilities of the Subaru are more than I will likely ever need. What I was looking for, was a Camry type drive and ride, with higher ground clearance, and some towing ability. I have a 2010 Honda Goldwing Trike I may at some point trailer and tow with the Subaru. The safety features like blind spot monitoring, auto braking, and lane departure assist were also high on my list of wanted features.

    I bought a 2023 Onyx Outback in February and liked it so much I bought a 2024 XT Onyx last month, white like this one. I love the updated standard features (HK radio, spare tire size, heated steering wheel, can't think what else). Now the wife has an OB and so do I.

    I'm right at 249,000 on my 2017 Outback Limited. I've had no issues other than an alternator that died at 173,000 miles. It was a quick 20 minute replacement that I did myself. I also went through 2 windshields, 2 sets of front & rear brake pads, and tires as one would expect. All the mechanical work I did myself except for oil changes but I always supplied my own Subaru filter and used semi-synthetic oil with 5000 mile intervals. The car had been bullet proof and as someone who drives for a living I consider it an essential part of my EDC.
    The car was bought in San Diego and used for work and play. I drove it hard through all seasons and up and down the Sierra range. It made trips to Utah and and Baja as well hauling bikes, people, and gear while offering great comfort and economy. It also hauled a U-Haul trailer cross country when Cali went crazy after the "C" word and we escaped to freedom. It's handled icy southern Appalachian roads and gravel roads like a mountain goat. Even though I have Jeep's and other proper 4x4's with real transfer cases I've hit trails in this car and it's never had an issue whatsoever!
    My only complaints are the seats, max cruise speed, and CVT transmission although nothing is mechanically wrong with them. The seats are perforated so they're a pain to clean and stuff gets stuck in them like crazy! On a road trip in Utah I found the max speed using the cruise control was 90 mph. I wanted 95 mph! The CVT occasionally felt a little "rubbery" at times even though it's got the electronic "shift points" to make it feel like a regular automatic. However, it's like my Swiss watch compared to the CVT in my wife's CRV!
    All that typed. I'm picking up a new Outback Onyx next week. The seat material will be an improvement over the leather perforated option in the Limited. The only person who's in the passenger seat now is my wife so the manual passenger seat is a "set and forget" thing. I'm also not hauling friends around in the back so there's no need for heated rear seats. I also expect that having 8 programmed shift points instead of 6 will make the CVT a little more seamless as well. The heated steering wheel will be nice in the wintertime although I only see a little snow.
    This will probably be my last "work" car as I expect this one to be just broken in when my road dog days are over. I remember reading an article that stated "road rep/salesman" was the 7th most dangerous job in the USA. I had that in mind when I bought my first Outback and it's the only car I'll drive until I retire from the road. At that point I'll still keep an Outback as our travel vehicle as well as my Jeep's and bikes that remain toys.

    You mentioned a really good point that is one of my biggest beefs worth the modern automotive industry: manufacturer-dictated option packages. There are so many times I've looked at a car and wished that I could get (for example) the upgraded audio system without the sunroof, or maybe the powered rear hatch without the leather upholstery... Drives me bonkers that I either have to fork over thousands of extra dollars to pay for the options I hate to get the one I care about, or I have to forego that one thing which would make the car so much more enjoyable to me in the long run. I'm a little amazed (sure to how long automation and mass production techniques have been around) that the consumer doesn't have the option of downloading a manufacturer's app, and customizing a vehicle for delivery in 6 months with exactly the features they want, option packages be d*****.

    I bought this same trim for my wife and we absolutely love it! We originally wanted a premium but we opted for this trim because of the heated steering wheel, full size spare, sound system, and the StarTex material. We love the X-modes because we have an active lifestyle and our Subaru takes us everywhere. Other pluses are the MPGs and the cargo space. The other vehicles we were seriously considering were the Toyota Venza and Honda HRV hybrid.

      I have a Venza and love the fuel economy and interior finish; however, I miss the planted feeling and safety of my old Fozzy. @alexandercabrera2808 Is the StarTex terribly hot in the summer? That’s my only hesitation about the Onyx.

    • @AutomotiveAnonymous208
      @AutomotiveAnonymous208  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I’ve never gotten into my OBW during up to 105 deg summer days and thought the startex was unusually hot. But I keep the sunroof shade closed and my windows are tinted, which likely helps considerably.

    • @alexandercabrera2808
      @alexandercabrera2808 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@thecleaningteacher638 yes, they get pretty hot. I avoid this by using the remote start a couple minutes before using it. Or I’ll leave my windows/sunroof slightly opened. Depends on if it’s raining or not. The best feature about the StarTex material is how easy they are to clean! Water/towel will get everything out. For deep cleans I use those cleaning towels that you can buy for $5 at autozone. I have two dogs which is why I wanted something easy to maintain. And I can only imagine how good it’d be if you have kids.

    I got a 24 outback onyx in early Feb and love it so far. I actually made the decision because they added the HK stereo. I love my music and it was very important for me. Also I wanted heated steering wheel which was also added for 24. I live in northern Wisconsin so it really comes in handy. So once those were added I picked one up.

    Thanks for the review. Our first Subaru is a very bare bones model Crosstrek which we have leased. We're actually going to buy it and give it to my mother-in-law because we think it'll be a good car for her. We're considering replacing it with an Outback (maybe Onyx) model.
    Things I've loved about the Crosstrek:
    *It handles almost all the off-road scenarios (of which I encounter fairly frequently) I've thrown at it surprising well!
    *It does amazingly well in the snow.
    *It has been reliable and easy.
    Things I don't really like:
    *No amenities (like key-in-pocket proximity unlocking and pushbutton start)
    *What I would describe as "twitchy" handling (cornering, sensitive accelerator and brakes that are difficult to modulate well)
    *Gutless acceleration when passing on a highway
    *Annoyingly old infotainment system
    *The stupid cruise control/EyeSight system that 1) only adjusts in 5 MPH increments unless you hold the switch and 2) brakes hard when another car moves into your lane even if that car is moving your speed or faster 3) lane centering/steering that is downright scary and possessive of the wheel when turned on.
    *What I'd consider poor MPG for such a relatively small car.
    I hope that at least SOME of these things will be improved in the Outback Onyx. I know the keyless opening/starting is a thing, and apparently it has wireless CarPlay which is at least a slight improvement on the infotainment. It seems to have only slightly worse fuel economy for being significantly larger. I think the cruise control adjustment is the same...
    Questions:
    *Does the adaptive cruise and EyeSight system respond to other traffic and is the lane-centering/steering as frighteningly poor as in the Crosstrek?
    *Does the Outback perform as well (or better) off-road or in snow?
    *What about the handling characteristics and accelerator/brake sensitivity?
    *Why are people so annoyed by the auto start/stop feature? I really don't mind this in the Crosstrek but maybe it's different in the Outback?
    *Anything other gripes or quirks I should know/consider?

    • @AutomotiveAnonymous208
      @AutomotiveAnonymous208  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Eyesight seems to do a really good job, especially if it’s the 3 camera system, but the older Crosstrek’s (I owned a 2019) definitely was worse than my 22 Outbacks. I also think the Outback is slightly better in snow due to a 3” longer wheelbase and a bit more weight to help it feel more stable. Acceleration and braking honestly feels pretty similar to me, but again the Outback is a bit heavier so you may notice that under hard braking and acceleration if they’re both 2.5 boxer trim levels. I would speculate that if you didn’t mind the auto start/stop feature you’ve already had you shouldn’t mind this either. It’s more just people either despite it or they don’t care haha. Otherwise, I don’t think a whole lot would surprise you from one Subaru to the next. The Outback just feels like the bigger more mature version of the Crosstrek in my opinion. Best of luck in whatever you decide to do!! 🙂

    I wonder when Subaru is going to make a hybrid in their Outback?
    I know the redesigned Forester in 24 / 25 will be available with the Forester.
    It seems that if Subaru does it right, then with a good hybrid system (2-4 electrical motors), then there would be no need for a turbo and get better efficiency as well.
    On another note, if Toyota would build the new 24 Tacoma with just a hybrid and no turbo, then that would be the way to go.
    Anyhow, great review on the Onyx,,if you like Gloomy Grey Vinyl interior 🤪.
