  • For 2024 there's 9 trim levels for the Subaru Outback including the Onyx Edition. You may wonder what is the right model for me and should I go with the 2.5 or 2.4. In this video we'll take the 2024 Subaru Outback Onyx Edition XT out for a test drive to see if it's a great family vehicle in a highly competitive crossover market, but also to see if it's the best trim you can buy for the 2024 Outback.
    Huge thank you to Subaru of Wakefield for letting me stop by to film this 2024 Subaru Outback!

    Just bought a 2024 Outback Limited 2.5 for my wife. Coming from a BMW X3 I do miss the Turbo power and handling; however, gas is a dollar a gallon more expensive here for premium and the 2.5 is suppose to get 28 MPG on regular vs 23 mpg on premium for the X3. This is our sixth Subaru, three Outback’s and two Foresters. Subaru has really improved in interior luxury and quietness!

      I bought a 24 Outback Onyx 2.5 and I am perfectly happy with it. I had a turbo Ford Ranger and I don't miss the power really. I live in northern Wisconsin and the AWD works amazing In our winters. Great gas mileage and very comfortable and easy to drive.

    Thanks for the Review! I'm cross shopping the Wilderness and Onyx XT and found this helpful. One thing people forget to consider is that although they are similarly priced to start, you have to add an ~1800 package to the Wilderness to get the sunroof, RAB and Nav that comes standard on the Onyx.

    Good review! Love this version of the Outback as the Onyx XT comes with a full-size spare and does NOT have the annoying Driver Mitigation System that reads your face! If it only had a 360 degree camera system it would be perfect!!

      Yeah, the last thing I need is an in-car camera spying on me every second I drive, micromanaging every motion I make. What a terrible idea! Even though I LOVE the XT Limited's leather interior, it's a deal breaker, not a "feature" as the salesperson was trying to convince me. It can be turned off I was told, but you have to do that every time you turn on the car. What a pain! It's bad enough I'll have to that with stupid ASS button. Or I suppose one could put a piece of black tape over it and deal with a constant error message it will display. The really scary thing is that our current government will be mandating this invasive snoopware in all vehicles beginning in 2027 - only worse it will have disable function if the camera decides you appear impaired and can't drive.

    Thank you for your excellent Subaru reviews. My 2013 Impreza sport, which I loved and served me well, was "totaled" by a family member and I couldn't decide what to get. After seriously considering the Forester Wilderness, I picked up my ice silver Outback Onyx XT today and couldn't be happier. One of the main deciding factors was the extra power of the turbo which is honestly quite surprising in this vehicle.

    I wonder if Subaru has finally corrected the issue they had with windshields cracking because of frame stress, also cracking from small stones (where better windshields would just have a small chip that could be fixed). I've read many reviews saying that Subaru is very reluctant to replace them, so much so there was a class action lawsuit I believe.

    I had a ‘17 CR-V with the turbo CVT and I felt like it was much smoother than my ‘19 Forester CVT. Honestly, though, I think all CVTs are garbage. They have that rubber band quality that sounds terrible. I have a ‘21 Venza and that CVT is tolerable because it’s hybrid; however, I miss my awesome sauce AWD from my Subie. Ah, to long for the perfect car. 🤣 Great review ✅

    I love this review. I'm very much in this boat where my lease in my Crosstrek is coming up due and I very much want a OB. Onyx is definitely where I wanna be unfortunately XT is only available in limited and premier trims now in Canada. I drove a 2. 5 once but never got highway driving in. Most say it's adequate power. Is it fine for most? I drive highway and my commute is 120km or 70 miles round trip. So definitely like fuel economy but hoping it can be a highway cruiser I am coming from a 2.0l and that thing is gutless but I seem to manage. Appreciate your feedback m

      Compared to the 2.0L you’ll find that the 2.5 is more enjoyable but also provides more confidence when passing other motorists. We recently test drove a Legacy with the 2.5 and it really is all you need for weekly commutes.

      I have a 21 XT. It gets me speeding tickets I’m getting a 20 for 2.5 L no turbo I’ve driven one for a week when my car was getting fixed you get 32 miles to the gallon and no tickets.🎉

    the limited and touring of XT should be quieter than this Onyx?

  • @thelawrence71

    Name one thing that is different from the 2023? I have the 2023 non turbo and the only thing that I’ve seen from the 2024 is a price increase. This used to be the top outdoor version until the wilderness came along and I have to say, the Onyx is very nice and capable but Subaru needs to seriously address some issues. Why have this version? Just to get blacked out rims, badges and mirrors? Let’s hope Subaru doesn’t ruin the look of the Outback for 2025 like they did with the Forester. Watch the previous years become highly sought after and the 2025 not sell like previous years. They just look too close to a Honda Pilot and no serous enthusiast drives a Honda Pilot. I mean seriously.

    Which one would you recommend for a family with 2 kids..Outback or Forester? Any redesign expected in 2025?

    • @BostonAutoBlog
      @BostonAutoBlog  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We’re still leaning towards the Forester especially with the 2nd row being more accessible if you have to squeeze in a 3rd person.
      As of right now no word on if there’s a redesign for 2025 but that’s something we’d expect.

    • @thelawrence71
      @thelawrence71 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There will be a redesign and let’s hope it doesn’t reflect how the Forester turned out. The OB will def have more room for kids and gear and the towing capacity is higher. Turbo is nice but it def comes with more maintenance. Pop into the Subaru dealership and talk with a mechanic there. Ask him or her if they had a choice between turbo and non turbo. Their answer will surprise you. Turbos are hard in engines and your emission system. My wife’s Forester Xt would not pass inspection and was going to cost $8k to fix emission problems caused by the turbo. She was forced to buy a brand new forester wilderness non turbo at $42k.

    • @Gopinathk17
      @Gopinathk17 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@thelawrence71 oh wow..8k to fix the turbo issue is a damn. How much did it run before turbo failure? Usually people say there would be no issues with regular maintenance.

    • @thelawrence71
      @thelawrence71 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      She had about 100k on the motor. My wife spent about $1300 in trying to fix it then the bad news came in that sensors, a bunch of emission stuff along with the catalytic converter was burned up and needed replaced. She got only $2k for trade in where she would have gotten $8k if the turbo hadn’t ruined everything.
      My ob onyx is the non turbo and cruises our highways very nicely at 75+mph. Turbo is nice for passing but better gas mileage, easier on the engine, less maintenance and saving $4k+ for the turbo upgrade made me choose the non turbo. Now, I do have some gripes: start/stop is crap and hard on the motor, the oem cross bars on top of car limit how much you can put on top; we like to run a gear box and ski rack up top and the oem cross bars do not allow this. You’ll have to spend $1000 or more to put Yakima system on and remove the oem
      Cross bars.
      Absolutely love the interior. We travel from NY to Maine twice a year and this past year we took my Outback. 9 hours seemed like 20 minutes.

      @RareGenXer 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Outback is nearing the end of its 5-to-6-year model run, so this should mean it's more trouble free, as this is usually when a model is usually at its most reliable. The Forester is brand new. I wouldn't want to be beta tester of the first year. Oh, and I saw the new Forester in person. It looks hideous (IMHO). So ill proportioned. But at least it weighs more and has less power than before. So unless you can find a leftover 2024 Forester, I'd definitely get the Outback.

      Couple ways, if you have an XT badge on the back then it is Turbo engine. The other way yo tell is if you hit the gas and nothing happens you don't have the turbo.

      I test drove both an Onyx XT and Wilderness XT side by side. The Onyx rides and handles MUCH better than the Wilderness. The Wilderness was boaty, squishy, sloppy. I instantly hated it. I'd only consider the Wilderness if one primarily drives off road or on lots of dirt and gravel roads. I did like the Wilderness StarTex better, however. The Onyx StarTex looks and feels a little cheap.

    HERE IS THE TRUTH. I disagree with several statements of this reviewer. The 2.5 Outback is unquestionably slower than the CRV and RAV4. The CRV's 1.5 turbo has more horsepower and torque. Further, beyond having more torque, the maximum torque comes in at 1700 RPM. The Outback 2.5 torque comes in at 4400 RPM, meaning you have to wind out the engine on the Outback 2.5 to go up a hill or merge into traffic. The CRV and RAV4 hybrids have been tested by many automotive journals and they are even quicker. The optional Subaru Outback 2.4 XT is perhaps quicker than the aforementioned versions of the CRV/RAV4 but certainly slower than the RAV4 Prime which does 0 - 60 in 5.5 seconds and gets great mpg even after the EV charge is depleted. The penalty with the Outback 2.4 Turbo XTs is the gas mileage. Car Reviewer/You Tuber Matt Maran tested the 2020 and 2024 Touring XT. Each time he got 18 - 18.5 mpg averge during a week of suburb mixed driving. I own a 22 XT. My average is 18 if I drive it timidly. Straight highway [meaning an entire tank at 65 mph] will achieve 30 mpg. Most people don't drive 100% highway, 365 days a year. The Outback is a nice cruiser but economy and performance together are not achievable. FYI, the 2025 Outback will be the same as the 2024. Subaru is now on a 6 year cycle for the Forester and Outback. If the Ascent remains the same for 2025, that will be a 7 year run. Subaru announded that the 2025 model year Forester will be out by Spring 2024. Threfore the 2024 model year Forester is a short run. The 2026 Forester Hybrid will arrive a year later. Most of the social media comments on the '25 exterior styling are negative. People are also down on many of the physical knobs being replaced with the touch screen which requires taking one's eyes off of the road. Progress??? At least Subaru kept the overall boxy shape and large windows.
